SMME Contracts: Nearly 10 a Day Awarded

In just over 4 months, the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure awarded over 1190 project contracts.

Nearly 734 of these contracts were awarded to companies of previously disadvantaged backgrounds. Through its Western Cape Infrastructure Framework 2050, the department is geared towards creating infrastructure-led growth and investment for the province that will benefit all communities.

The total value of these contracts is more than R1 billion. The department’s commitment to the formation of public and private partnerships enables the creation of much-needed job opportunities and growth for Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). The Provincial Minister Tertuis Simmers reflected on the department’s commitment to the growth of jobs and opportunities for SMMEs.

“This is a clear indication of the Western Cape Government’s commitment towards securing the well-being of our citizens through providing sustainable opportunities through infrastructure projects. The investment in these projects cuts across all facets of infrastructure from the building, repairing, and maintenance of roads, to education, and health facilities. Included in these projects is the contribution towards energy resilience projects. We recently started with the installation of Solar PV Panels at human settlements projects.”

The Minister is, however, concerned about the possible impact that the looming fiscal cuts being considered by the national government, will have on infrastructure projects in the province. “For every R1 million spent on infrastructure, there are at least 2 formal jobs created. The anticipated fiscal cuts could have a severe impact on the delivery of many of our services.”
