4 July 2025 – South Africa will open their account at the Region 5 Games in Windhoek, Namibia, on Saturday when the U20 men’s and the women’s teams face their Zambia counterparts to kickstart their participation in the tournament.

The tournament got underway on Friday, 4 July 2025 and the women’s group stages will be played at the UNAM Stadium while the men will face-off at the Hage Geingob Stadium.

SA women’s coach Ntombifuthi Khumalo said she was looking forward to getting her team’s campaign underway after arriving in Namibia a few days ago.

“I am happy that we have assembled a balanced team here at the Region 5 Games. We have no injuries and all the ladies are fit and ready for the tournament,” she said.

“We have been in Namibia for the past few days now and everything has been positive so far. From my side, I have a strong belief about the team that we have here with us, and we will do our best in this competition. It will be our first game tomorrow and I’m looking forward to it. I am positive about the tournament, and we will give our best.”

Coach Khumalo will introduce new national team players during this tournament, and they are: Siyamthanda Macingwana, Sphesihle Mvila, Karabo Mahasha, Adrienne Schmidt and Zizipho Mhlahlo.

The coach of the men’s team, Vela Khumalo, was happy with the way things have progressed so far in Namibia.

“So far so good. We have prepared very well for the Zambia game tomorrow. One will then appreciate that it’s Under 17 preparing for the World Cup,” he said.

“But now we are playing SASCOC games as good preparation for our boys, and to confirm also the players that we still want to add in our game, in our team, and the players that we want to see and confirm. This is a good five games for the boys to have minutes on their legs.”

According to COSAFA, there are eight sides in each competition, with the teams drawn into two pools of eight sides. The group stages wrap up on Wednesday, 9 July 2025 and top two sides advance to the semi-finals.
