2 September 2025 by Guest

Melinda Snyman, NSRI St Lucia station commander, said: At 07h16, Monday 1 September, NSRI St Lucia duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at a dam between Monzi and Mtubatuba (inland from St Lucia).

NSRI St Lucia rescue swimmers, the NSRI St Lucia rescue vehicle and SA Police Services responded.

On arrival on the scene a local male teenager, age 17, was missing under water in the dam where local community pointed out an area where it was believed the teenager was missing in the dam.

NSRI rescue swimmers deployed into the water to free dive search and they located the teenager that was recovered to the shore in cooperation with Police.

The teenager was sadly deceased.

The body of the teenager was taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.

Police have opened an Inquest docket.

Condolences are conveyed to the family and friends of the deceased teenager.

Biltong – seasoned strips of dried meat. Similar to beef jerky (but much tastier!), this is the spicy, cured snack eaten at rugby matches. It is usually made from beef, game and even ostrich.
