Standard Bank Group, Africa’s largest bank by assets with a presence across 21 African markets, has signed a subscription agreement to invest in OPay, a digital financial platform primarily offering a comprehensive suite of integrated fintech solutions in Nigeria and other countries.
This investment is expected to close concurrently with or shortly after the closing of OPay’s proposed initial public offering, subject to completion of the offering and receipt of applicable regulatory approvals. OPay has today publicly filed a registration statement on Form F-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in connection with the proposed offering and has applied to list its American Depositary Shares (ADSs) on the New York Stock Exchange.
In addition, the parties intend to explore opportunities in African markets involving digital banking and the distribution of selected Standard Bank Group products and services through OPay’s consumer and merchant platform. Other potential areas of collaboration include merchant acquiring, payments, lending, remittances and the co-development of new products and services. Any initiatives remain subject to definitive agreements and regulatory approvals.
Sim Tshabalala, Chief Executive of Standard Bank Group, said: “Africa’s growth is increasingly shaped by connectivity, digital adoption, and evolving models of economic participation. Standard Bank’s banking expertise and African footprint complement OPay’s digital financial services platform and merchant ecosystems. Together, we see potential to expand access to financial services, support cross-border commerce and deliver value to clients across Africa. This partnership is a significant step toward those goals.”
The partnership supports Standard Bank Group’s own digital ambitions, combining OPay’s technology and platform capabilities with the Group’s presence across the continent.
This move demonstrates Standard Bank Group’s commitment to its growth ambitions, building on the strategy set out at its recent Capital Markets Day. It further strengthens the Group’s ability to serve clients across established and emerging channels, and advance its ambition to make financial services more accessible. Standard Bank Group continues to invest in supporting intra-African trade, expanding financial inclusion and unlocking opportunity for the continent’s people and businesses.

Fun South African Fact: Lions, elephants and giraffes may not roam the city streets, but nature and animals are never too far away in South Africa. From vervet monkeys swinging through tree-lined streets in the suburbs and baboons frolicking around Cape Point to seals visiting the Hout Bay harbour in search of a fishy snack and an array of bird species taking to the sky at any given moment. Wildlife is all around!
