Johannesburg: Friends, family, and supporters are rallying behind Tyrique Daniels after the young South African was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), an aggressive cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow.

Since February 2026, Tyrique has spent months in and out of hospital undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatment. He is currently in the consolidation phase of chemotherapy — a critical stage focused on eliminating any remaining cancer cells in his body. While the treatment is necessary for his recovery, it has left him physically exhausted and unable to maintain full-time employment.

Facing mounting financial pressure while fighting for his life, Tyrique has launched a BackaBuddy campaign with a goal of raising R300,000 to help cover essential living expenses and support him throughout his cancer treatment journey. So far, the campaign has reached 18% of its goal, but urgent support is still needed.

“I started this BackaBuddy as a means to support myself through recovery,” says Tyrique. “I’m asking for any donations you may be able to offer and to please share my campaign. Any support, no matter the size, could change my life right now.”

The funds raised will assist Tyrique with the financial burden caused by ongoing treatment, helping him maintain stable housing and focus fully on his recovery during this incredibly difficult time.

Supporters are encouraged to donate, share the campaign widely on social media, and help raise awareness about Tyrique’s fight against AML. Every contribution whether financial or through sharing his story brings hope and relief to someone facing one of the toughest battles of his life.

Tyrique and his loved ones extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has already shown support, kindness, and encouragement throughout this journey.

Good policy always trumps bad Public Relations and the best PR can\’t trump bad policy. – Bob Schieffer

I will say that the difference was that when you\’re an Army journalist, as opposed to a civilian correspondent covering the military, you\’re very often either a Public Relations agent or expected to perform that role. I would say that one of the most unexpected benefits of that job was being taught to never try to cover anything up, but rather to get any bad information out right away, so that there would be nothing more to come out later. This was a wonderful lesson to be taught because often the effort to cover up a story becomes a bigger story than the original one. – Clarence Page
