Stick-wielding vigilantes harass asylum seekers

Immigrants queuing at Home Affairs in Durban targeted by xenophobic group

Immigrants queuing at Home Affairs offices in Durban to apply for asylum were harassed on Tuesday by a group of about 15 vigilantes.
Some wore masks and most carried sticks.
They pushed people in the queue in the parking area and shouted insults.
Police sent them away from the parking area.
Home Affairs announced on Monday that all asylum seekers would be able to apply for asylum, ending a six-year closure of the asylum system to new applicants.

    Van der Merwe was watching a rugby test against the British Lions at Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria. In the packed stadium, there was only one empty seat – next to Van der Merwe.
