Successful Rollout of Home Affairs Services at KZN Bank Branches

Statement by Mzamo Billy MP and Nichole Bollman MP:

A visit by the Democratic Alliance today to a participating bank branch at Gateway Shopping Centre in Umhlanga found the newly launched Home Affairs Smart ID application services providing a groundbreaking service and operating at full capacity.

The visit by DA Members of Parliament confirmed that the rollout of Home Affairs services in banks is a major step forward in improving access to government services for South Africans.

Citizens can now apply for Smart ID cards and complete related Home Affairs processes quickly and efficiently at participating branches of Standard Bank and Capitec, avoiding the long queues and frustrations that have historically plagued many Home Affairs offices. The service at bank branches is available without an appointment and is operating extremely well as a walk-in service.

This initiative, led by the Minister of Home Affairs, the DA’s Dr Leon Schreiber, demonstrates what is possible when capable leadership focuses on modernising government services and putting citizens first.

For years, Home Affairs services suffered from neglect, inefficiency, and outdated systems under the ANC government. The digital transformation and service expansion now underway shows that those years of neglect are being actively addressed and corrected.

Through partnerships with participating banks, the Department of Home Affairs is bringing services closer to where people already are, reducing pressure on Home Affairs offices while dramatically improving convenience for citizens across South Africa.

The DA commends Minister Schreiber and the officials of the Department of Home Affairs for driving this reform and demonstrating that government can work efficiently when there is the political will to do so. We also encourage more banks to begin the rollout of this groundbreaking digital partnership to ensure that every South African has access to secure and efficient Smart ID services.

The DA looks forward to seeing this service expanded to more bank branches across KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa so that even more citizens, including those in rural areas, can benefit from faster, more reliable Home Affairs services.

South Africans deserve a government that works. Today’s rollout shows that meaningful progress is possible.
