Sun King Is Taking Solar Beyond Kenyan Homes

Solar energy company Sun King has expanded its inverter range in Kenya to systems of up to 30 kilowatts, targeting larger homes, schools, hospitals and businesses seeking alternatives to unreliable grid electricity and diesel generators.

The expanded PowerHub portfolio, which previously included smaller-capacity systems, now ranges from 2.2 kW to 30 kW. The company says customers can now connect multiple inverters in parallel to increase power output and expand their installations over time by adding batteries and solar panels.

The move extends Sun King’s reach beyond household solar systems into commercial and light industrial applications, where higher electricity demand can make the cost and reliability of power supply a significant operational concern.

“The latest additions to our PowerHub range take us into new territory. We can now serve homes, shops, businesses, schools, hospitals, and offices of virtually any size,” said Atta Arome, Sun King’s product head for solar inverter systems.

The company noted the systems could power equipment including water pumps, washing machines and air conditioners, although actual capacity would depend on the installation’s configuration and energy consumption.

Sun King, which has operated in Kenya since 2007, says its products were available nationwide through its agent network. The company also offers payment plans intended to lower the upfront cost of adopting solar power.

The company listed monthly payments starting at $120, alongside a down payment of about $175, for the expanded range. It did not specify in the announcement which system configuration those terms applied to.

Kenya has sought to expand renewable energy adoption as households and businesses contend with electricity costs, power interruptions and the expense of backup generation. Solar systems with battery storage can reduce reliance on the grid, though their economics depend on installation costs, financing terms, sunlight availability and electricity consumption patterns.

Sun King says one in five Kenyans had access to its solar solutions, but did not provide supporting data or define the measure of access. It also says more than 330,000 of its solar products were installed monthly across Africa.

It also did not disclose the expected sales contribution from the expanded inverter range, investment in the rollout or its target number of commercial customers in Kenya.

Van der Merwe was watching a rugby test against the British Lions at Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria. In the packed stadium, there was only one empty seat – next to Van der Merwe.

\”Who does that seat belong to?\” asked his neighbour.

    \”It\’s for my wife.\”

    \”But why isn\’t she here?\”

    \”She died.\”

\”So why didn\’t you give the ticket to one of your friends?\”

\”They\’ve all gone to the funeral.\”
