Surf Skier Rescued

23 November 2025 by Guest

Sharon Crowthar, NSRI Simon’s Town duty coxswain, said: At 07h36, Wednesday, 19 November, NSRI Simonstown duty crew were activated following the emergency activation of an NSRI SafeTrx indicating a paddler in distress on a surf ski in the vicinity of Roman Rock Lighthouse, Simonstown.

Our NSRI crew responded to our NSRI Simons Town station 10 rescue base where the NSRI rescue craft Donna Nicholas was launched.

Our NSRI coast watchers were alerted to attempt to get visuals of the surf skier in distress.

It appears that the local adult female surf skier had been separated from her surf ski when the leash separated while paddling with her fellow female surf skier.

The casualty surf ski had drifted away from them.

Her friend used her surf ski as an aid to keep her friend, in the water holding onto the surf ski, afloat while they raised the alarm using their NSRI SafeTrx emergency app.

On NSRI arriving on the scene the casualty was rescued onto the NSRI rescue craft and her friend, and the one surf ski, were recovered onto the NSRI rescue craft.

At that stage a second emergency SafeTrx alert was received from the vicinity of Sunny Cove.

With the casualty and her friend onboard the NSRI rescue craft we proceeded to Sunny Cove where we found the casualty surf ski adrift, drifting towards the shoreline, and that surf ski was recovered onto the NSRI rescue craft.

They were both brought to our NSRI rescue base safely where no further assistance was required.
