As global aluminium prices surge - hitting a four-year high of $3,492 per ton in March 2026 - driven by tensions in the Middle East, the upcoming African Mining Week (AMW) 2026, scheduled for October 14-16 in Cape Town, will explore the challenges and opportunities emerging for Africa within the global aluminium supply chain.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz - which accounts for approximately 12% of global aluminium trade – and attacks on industrial infrastructure across the Middle East - a region responsible for 9% of global output - are disrupting the global supply chain.

For Africa, these developments present both risks and opportunities. The continent currently has only one operational alumina refinery - the RUSAL-operated Friguia refinery in Guinea - leaving African markets highly exposed to global supply disruptions and price volatility. Despite holding more than 30% of the world's bauxite reserves, Africa accounts for less than 1% of global alumina refining capacity, highlighting a significant gap between resource availability and downstream processing infrastructure. As a result, many African economies rely heavily on imported aluminium products, particularly from the Middle East. South Africa, the continent's most industrialized economy, sources a large share of its unwrought aluminium imports from Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, with Bahrain alone accounting for more than 42% of these imports.

Against this backdrop, AMW 2026 will convene government officials, project developers, investors and industry leaders to explore strategies for strengthening Africa's role in the global aluminium supply chain. Discussions will focus on accelerating investments in bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminium processing infrastructure to reduce import dependence and build a more resilient regional industrial base.

Already, several projects are underway to unlock Africa's potential as a global aluminium hub. Guinea, the world's leading bauxite producer, is targeting the development of six alumina refineries with a combined capacity of approximately seven million tons per year by 2030. Meanwhile, Nigeria is advancing plans for its first large-scale alumina refinery, backed by $1.3 billion in financing from the Africa Finance Corporation and the Solid Minerals Development Fund. Ghana and Cameroon are also pursuing alumina refining projects to strengthen mineral beneficiation, build local industrial capacity and reduce exposure to global supply shocks.

Through high-level panel discussions, project showcases and networking sessions, AMW will connect global investors with African projects across bauxite and alumina value chains. The event represents an ideal platform for partnership formations and deal signings to accelerate Africa's transition from a major exporter of raw materials to a competitive player in the global aluminium industry.

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has been confirmed as a Partner of African Energy Week (AEW) 2026, taking place October 12–16 in Cape Town. Its participation underscores the event's role as a premier investment platform, positioning the bank at the center of deal-making across oil, gas, power and energy infrastructure.

Ahead of AEW, Afreximbank has expanded its global footprint by raising its financing cap for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to $5 billion. The increase builds on more than $750 million already deployed and a pipeline exceeding $2 billion, targeting infrastructure, tourism, agro-processing and financial services while strengthening Africa–Caribbean trade and investment corridors.

The bank reached a recent milestone with South Africa joining as its 54th member state, completing full continental coverage. This accession unlocks an $8 billion country program focused on energy, manufacturing and trade, alongside a $3 billion Transformation Fund aimed at supporting black-owned businesses and SMEs while advancing industrial development and regional value chains. In recent years, the bank has also bolstered its capital base, including a $25 billion increase in authorized capital, enhancing its capacity to finance large-scale energy and infrastructure projects across Africa.

Afreximbank's expanding role extends directly into project financing through the Africa Energy Bank, a joint initiative spearheaded by Afreximbank and the African Petroleum Producers' Organization. Designed to address a financing gap left by international lenders' retreat from upstream oil and gas, the bank aims to mobilize African capital for African energy projects, with initial funding targets in the billions and operations set to begin in 2026. Together with Afreximbank's strengthened balance sheet, this initiative signals a broader shift toward African-led capital structures capable of underwriting large-scale upstream, midstream and infrastructure developments – positioning the continent not just as a capital recipient, but as a capital originator.

“Afreximbank's partnership with AEW 2026 reflects a key shift in how Africa is financing its energy future,” said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber. “We're moving beyond reliance on external capital to a model where African institutions are structuring, financing and driving projects from the ground up. As investment accelerates across oil, gas and renewables, players like Afreximbank are not only supporting deals, but helping define the market.”

At African Energy Week 2026, Afreximbank is expected to play a central role in advancing financing discussions, supporting project origination and strengthening partnerships between governments, developers and investors. Its participation highlights a broader shift toward African-led capital in energy development, reinforcing the event's position as a catalyst for bankable projects, regional integration and long-term energy security.

AMW to Spotlight Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Prospects as Africa Seeks Partners for $8.5T Potential

Location: Business

The upcoming African Mining Week (AMW) conference – taking place October 14–16, 2026 in Cape Town – will feature a dedicated panel exploring the role of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in unlocking Africa's mining investment potential.

Titled ‘Leveraging Global M&As to Secure Investment', the panel will bring together global investors, mining companies, African policymakers and industry stakeholders to examine how strategic transactions can sustain investor confidence and accelerate capital flows into Africa's mining sector. The session will discuss how M&As can support the development of the continent's $8.5 trillion worth of untapped mineral resources, while strengthening Africa's role in global critical minerals supply chains.

Rising Critical Minerals Demand Accelerates Africa's M&As Activity

As global demand for critical minerals increases – expected to triple by 2030 – M&As across Africa's mining sector are accelerating as investors from the U.S, Europe, China and the UAE pursue strategic acquisitions, joint ventures and equity partnerships to strengthen their mineral supply chains. Inbound M&A deal values into Africa increased by 40% in 2025, with several African mining jurisdictions – including the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Mali, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Zambia – emerging as hotspots for these strategic investments.

In February 2026, Exxaro Resources completed a R10.6 billion acquisition of manganese assets in South Africa from Ntsimbintle Holdings and OM Holdings. The acquisition strengthens Exxaro's strategy to diversify into battery minerals and steelmaking inputs while supporting South Africa's agenda to attract fresh investments to maintain its position as the world's leading manganese producer.

Similarly, China's Baowu Resources increased its stake in the Simandou Iron Ore Project in Guinea-Conakry to 51%, strengthening China's access to one of the world's largest untapped iron ore deposits. The investment also supports Guinea-Conakry's Simandou 2040 economic growth strategy, which aims to leverage mining development to stimulate infrastructure expansion and broader economic growth.

Abu Dhabi-based International Resources Holding (IRH) acquired a 56% stake in tin miner Alphamin Resources for approximately $367 million, securing a majority position in a major tin operation in the DRC. In Zambia, IRH's investment in Mopani Copper Mines as part of a $1 billion recapitalization is reviving operations, supporting Zambia's 8% rise in copper output in 2025, while driving the country's 2031 target to increase output to three million tons per annum.

These transactions not only signal growing investment flows into Africa but also underscore the continent's strategic role in securing global supply chains. M&As are proving pivotal in driving the continent's job creation, infrastructure development and broader economic growth agenda. Against this backdrop, the AMW panel will offer stakeholders a platform to examine the evolving M&A landscape and uncover opportunities for new investment partnerships.

AMW serves as a premier platform for exploring the full spectrum of mining opportunities across Africa. The event is held alongside the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2026 conference from October 12-16 in Cape Town. African Mining Week (AMW) to Link Investors with Africa’s Coal Prospects Amid Rising Global Demand

Location: Business

Energy Capital & Power

As disruptions to global shipping routes continue to increase energy prices – with oil prices reaching over $100 per barrel in March 2026 – the upcoming African Mining Week (AMW) conference will connect global investors with emerging supply and investment opportunities across Africa's coal value chain.

The event will feature a panel titled Africa's Mining Opportunity in the Geopolitical Sphere, examining how ongoing geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global shipping routes are reshaping energy markets and creating new opportunities for Africa's coal mining sector.

Coal demand is rising as Asian economies turn to coal to stabilize power generation and mitigate volatility in oil and gas prices caused by ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz - a waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, which transports 20% of the world's oil and gas. According to research from Morgan Stanley, coal demand in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan could increase by 1.5 - 2 million tons per month should disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz persist. This represents an 8 - 10% increase in import demand, presenting an opportunity for coal-producing regions such as Africa to expand exports, strengthen revenues and contribute to global energy security.

African producers are already positioning themselves to capitalize on this growing demand. For instance, South African mining company Exxaro Resources targets to increase coal exports by 12% in 2026 to approximately 8 million metric tons (Mt), up from 7.1 million tons in 2025. In 2025, the company reported higher coal production and sales volumes of 39.9 Mt and 39.6 Mt respectively, alongside a 2% increase in coal export volumes, highlighting its potential to contribute to the growing demand.

At the national level, efforts by South Africa to revamp its rail infrastructure will increase export capacity by an additional 6 million tons in 2026, enabling the country to capitalize on the growing coal demand for higher export revenue. Meanwhile, Mozambique's plan to boost coal production by 15% to over 22 million tons in 2026 comes at a strategic moment, positioning the country to benefit from rising coal demand amid ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Zimbabwe, having achieved a 100% increase in coal exports in the first eight months of 2025, is well positioned to leverage its production and export capacity to expand its role in the global coal supply chain. Similarly, Botswana, pursuing a strategy to diversify its mining sector beyond diamonds through expanded coal production, is strategically positioned to capitalize on the rising coal demand and oil and gas market disruptions to boost revenue.

Against this backdrop, AMW 2026 will serve as a strategic platform connecting global investors with opportunities across Africa's coal mining value chain - from exploration and project development to infrastructure and export logistics.

Co-located with the Invest in African Energies: African Energy Week conference and exhibition – Africa's premier gathering for energy stakeholders - the event will offer attendees a unique opportunity to engage with stakeholders across both the mining and energy sectors, fostering partnerships that support Africa's growing role in meeting global energy demand.
