VFS Global appointed to roll out Australian biometric collection centres in Sub-Saharan Africa

The Department of Home Affairs, Australia has appointed VFS Global to provide biometric collection services for Sub-Saharan Africa. VFS Global is the world's leading outsourcing and technology service specialist for governments and diplomatic missions. This is in addition to the seven regions awarded in August 2023 to provide biometric collection services –the Americas, Mekong, Middle East and North Africa, North Asia, Pacific, South Asia and Southeast Asia. With the recent addition of Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, VFS Global has become the exclusive biometrics collection service provider to Australian visa applicants across all nine regions globally. 

The Sub-Saharan Africa region includes seven countries in total with Australian Biometric Collection Centre services to be rolled out at 12 locations in 13 countries by February 2025. This includes setting up Centres in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe. 

According to the agreement, VFS Global's core services include Biometric Collection and Identity Verification, Digital Assistance with online visa applications submission and Online Payment Assistance on the Department's ImmiAccount portal. The company would also provide additional (as required services) such as remote interview hosting, document and claim checking, paper digitisation and local addressing and document delivery.

Inmates ready for upcoming National Senior Certificate exams

Inmates ready for upcoming National Senior Certificate exams

Matriculants from Correctional Services schools are fully prepared for the upcoming National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, set to run from 21 October to 27 November 2024. 

A total of 173 inmates will sit for these exams, marking an important step in their pursuit of a Senior Certificate.

In a statement, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) said it was pleased with the level of preparedness, as inmates have completed the academic syllabus on time and have undergone various assessments throughout the year. 

Educators from the department's 18 schools remain optimistic, having made significant efforts to ensure that all candidates are thoroughly prepared. 

Additionally, the department ensured that all required textbooks and stationery were delivered to schools timeously.

Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale has praised the educators for their dedication and hard work in preparing the inmates for this important milestone. 

“Education not only empowers offenders with knowledge but also offers them a path to a new life. It remains our commitment to provide growth and development opportunities for every inmate, as we believe in the power of education to transform lives,” he said.

Formal education plays a crucial role in rehabilitating offenders while they are in correctional centres.
In collaboration with the Department of Basic Education, DCS has consistently produced strong academic results, often exceeding the national pass rate. 

In 2023, DCS schools achieved an impressive 93% overall pass rate, with nine schools attaining a 100% pass rate.

The department attributed the results to the conducive learning environment it fosters within correctional centres, as well as its commitment to providing offenders with education and skills that will help them reintegrate into society after their release. 

The department has also embraced technological advancements in education. In 2024, the Intelsat Telematics System was introduced at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre, offering both inmates and educators access to valuable study materials.

The department is proud to maintain an incident-free record for NSC examinations, reflecting the professionalism and dedication of the officials, as well as the strict adherence to exam protocols set by the Department of Basic Education.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says as the continent tackles Mpox, Africa needs to learn from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We need to ensure equitable distribution of medical countermeasures based on transparent criteria and readiness to initiate vaccination. We ask Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to lead the consultation with member states to ensure equitable distribution of vaccines and other medical countermeasures,” said the President.

He was delivering South Africa’s statement at the African Union Heads of State virtual meeting on Mpox on Sunday.

“We need a finance plan that is evidence-based, with sound forecasting of needs. The Africa CDC mandate on data sharing is the bedrock of global health security. This will help to ensure that public health threats are detected and shared across borders and with other continental and global stakeholders,” said the President.

He said countries would only be able to effectively mobilise and direct funds if supported by reliable data.

“We call on all African countries to make use of this instrumental system that has been created by our own institution. We call for the urgent operationalisation of the Africa Epidemic Fund as the primary vehicle for epidemic response financial management.”

He said as with COVID-19, Africa is still struggling to get the Mpox vaccine and treatment.

The President said the continent needs to manufacture Mpox vaccines in Africa to reduce costs and improve access.

“We must co-develop these medical countermeasures, share intellectual property and ensure technology transfer. In this regard, we welcome the agreement between Africa CDC and Bavarian Nordic to transfer the Mpox vaccine technology to African manufacturers,” he said.

With the financial support from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness, the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator, Afreximbank, the European Union and other partners, President Ramaphosa said the continent should be able to start vaccine manufacturing by 2025.

“In the meantime, we appreciate the support from a number of countries to get vaccines in Africa.

“The COVID-19 experience taught us that we need predictable demand and off-take guarantees for the vaccines, medicines and diagnostics manufactured in Africa. African countries should therefore buy vaccines and other health products manufactured in Africa to ensure sustainable manufacturing on our continent.”

He said this could be achieved through the African Pooled Procurement Mechanism.

Surveillance systems must be enhanced and healthcare delivery and infrastructure strengthened.

“We must ensure that frontline health workers have the necessary diagnostic tools, vaccines and antiviral treatments. We need tested public health messages that promote awareness and prevention.

“Beyond the targeted vaccination responses to outbreaks, we should explore the feasibility of continuing vaccinations in high-risk populations. This dual approach will help create a buffer against future outbreaks and protect our most vulnerable communities,” he said.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Mpox  as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

The President commended the fact that Africa CDC had partnered with the WHO, UNICEF and other partners to develop the Mpox continental preparedness and response plan and to build, for the first time in Africa, one Continental Incident Management Team.

The total number of positive cases recorded in South Africa since the outbreak in May this year stands at 25 cases, including three deaths. Twelve of these were reported in Gauteng, 11 reported in KwaZulu-Natal and two in the Western Cape.

Africa CDC has signed a partnership agreement with the European Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) and Bavarian Nordic to provide over 215 000 doses of the MVA-BN vaccine.

Africa CDC will oversee the equitable distribution of these vaccines, prioritising local needs across the affected member states. – SAnews.gov.za

Government prioritises providing shelter for stranded motorists in anticipation of more snow

In light of the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecast of severe snow and wet conditions across the country,  Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has directed the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) to coordinate readiness and response efforts with the relevant stakeholders.

The severe weather has resulted in extreme cold nationwide, especially in KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, prompting a robust multisectoral response. 

According to CoGTA, the focus will be on humanitarian relief, with shelter being provided for those stranded, coordinated by the Department of Social Development. 

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will lead rescue operations, while the Department of Transport will focus on road clearance.

“Our current priority is saving lives by providing necessities and ensuring the safety of those trapped. 

“We understand families may have travel plans, but we strongly advise against travelling during these conditions. We urge everyone to cooperate with us, as cooperation can help save lives,” Hlabisa said. 

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport said although thousands of motorists and truck drivers have been freed on the N3 highway, others are still trapped.

Hlabisa’s Office said all affected provinces have activated their disaster response structures. 

This was confirmed during a national coordination meeting with Provincial Disaster Management Centres (PDMCs), which provided updated reports to pinpoint areas that need urgent intervention.

According to the department, disaster teams are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of those caught in these conditions. 

The SAWS has since issued a Level 8 warning for additional disruptive snow in several areas, including Alfred Duma (Ladysmith), Dr N. Dlamini-Zuma (Underberg), Greater Kokstad, and others. 

“This warning signifies potentially life-threatening weather that could impact people, animals, and infrastructure," the department said.

In addition, windy conditions, rain and heavy snowfall have disrupted essential services such as water and electricity.

“Government teams are actively working to restore these services to safeguard lives. KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State continue to experience heavy rains, raising concerns about localised flooding that could affect pedestrians and drivers,” the department said.

Hlabisa urged the public to exercise caution as disaster teams are continuing to provide emergency assistance. 

While these teams are dedicated to supporting and rescuing those in need, the department said vigilance is paramount. 

“The public is advised to stay alert and heed warnings from the SAWS, disaster management teams and law enforcement agencies," the Minister said.

In addition, various communication channels will be utilised to keep everyone informed and safe.

Citizens urged to exercise caution as weather conditions worsen

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) this morning convened a Joint Operations Centre (JOC) meeting, where District Disaster Management Centres provided updates on relief efforts following the disruptive snowstorm that affected interior parts of the province on Friday.

The snowstorm has blocked major routes, including the R74 (Harrismith to Bergville), R74 Greytown/Colenso Road, N3 (Harrismith to Tugela Toll), R617 (Kokstad to Underberg), and the N3 Northbound, among others. 

Multidisciplinary interventions have begun to yield results, with some stranded motorists receiving support in the form of soup kitchens, shelter and blankets. 

Local municipalities, in conjunction with other State organs, have mobilised graders to clear snow in affected regions, prioritising major routes to facilitate emergency access. 

Residents are urged to stay off the roads and avoid using alternative routes, as inclement weather conditions are expected to worsen. 

According to the South African Weather Service, a Level 8 warning for further disruptive snow is in effect for Alfred Duma Ladysmith, Dr N. Dlamini-Zuma - Underberg, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Inkosi Langalibalele Escourt, Inkosi Langalibalele Sobabili, Mpofana Giants Castle, Mpofana Mooi River, Okhahlamba and uMngeni. 

“This warning indicates a potentially life-threatening weather occurrence. The heavy snowfall has also caused fallen trees, further complicating the situation. Residents living near the N3, who can assist stranded motorists with supplies are encouraged to do so safely.

“The heavy snow has disrupted essential services, including water and electricity, in several communities. 

“Technical teams are working to restore these services as quickly as possible, but residents should prepare for potential delays due to the weather conditions,” the PDMC said.

Residents are strongly advised against snow chasing, as road conditions are extremely dangerous. 

“Communities in the northern parts of the province continue to experience heavy rains, raising concerns about localised flooding. Disaster management teams are providing support to these areas, and residents are warned to remain vigilant. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels,” the PDMC said. – SAnews.gov.za

Basic Education ready for 2024 matric examinations

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says all systems are in place for it to administer the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations for the Class of 2024.

The department briefed the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education this week on a preliminary report regarding the state of readiness for this year’s Grade 12 final examinations.

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube, Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule and Director-General Mathanzima Mweli led the departmental delegation to Parliament.

The examinations are set to run from 21 October to 27 November 2024, and marking will commence immediately thereafter. 

“There are 55 053 markers appointed, who will be stationed at 188 marking centres. The results will be released to candidates on 16 January 2025. The Minister will announce the results on 15 January 2024,” the department said. 

Delivering opening remarks, Gwarube said the DBE had done a lot of work to prepare both the candidates and the system for this year’s examination. She said this was a pivotal moment for the learners, who are in their last weeks in the basic education system.

In terms of system readiness, the Chief Director for National Assessment and Public Examinations, Dr Rufus Poliah, reported that there were 732 448 full-time candidates enrolled for NSC examinations this year, which is 8 400 more than in 2023.

“KwaZulu-Natal has the largest Grade 12 population with 172 213 candidates, while Gauteng contributes the second largest number with 136 620. Eastern Cape has 103 975 and Limpopo has 94 236. Mpumalanga has 68 455 and the Western Cape has registered 64 552 candidates. The North West has 41 480, while the Free State has 37 737 and the Northern Cape has 13 180 registered candidates this year. 

“There are 136 195 part-time candidates registered to sit for various subjects this year. The examinations will take place in 6 909 centres across the nine provinces,” the department said.  

Poliah said a total of 162 question papers for the 2024 October/November examinations have been approved by Umalusi and are ready for handover to provinces for printing.

The Class of 2024 is the seventh cohort that will sit for South African Sign Language (SASL) Home Language (HL) examinations in November 2024. Twenty- three schools in nine provinces have 210 candidates registered for SASL HL, compared to 134 candidates in 2023.

In terms of learner readiness, the Deputy Director-General for Curriculum, Dr Barney Mthembu, highlighted several factors that need to be taken into account regarding the current cohort of Grade 12 learners. 

“Firstly, the Class of 2024 was in Grade R in 2012, the year of implementation of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) in foundation phase. Secondly, they entered Grade 8 in 2020 at the height of COVID-19, which means their transition from primary to secondary school was seriously disrupted.

“Thirdly, their Grade 9 year (2021), which is crucial for subject selection in Grade 10, was also disrupted due to COVID-19,” Mthembu said. 

He said learners experienced social distancing, which limited group work between teachers and group assessment activities. Rotational attendance affected coverage of the curriculum and created content gaps. At the height of COVID-19, teacher absenteeism affected teacher curriculum coverage negatively for this cohort.

In spite of these disruptions, the department said this cohort started to benefit from the Learning Recovery Programme at primary school.

“Strategies and interventions aimed at addressing the academic setbacks of COVID-19 were introduced. In Grade 10 (2022), the system was beginning to recover from the COVID-19 restrictions, which led to a return of the majority of learners to school.

“This saved this cohort from rotational attendance and loss of teaching and learning time. It also helped them to complete the Grade 10 Annual Teaching Plans (ATPs). In Grade 11 (2023) this cohort had an advantage of the removal of social distancing and other related restrictions. This helped it to cover the Grade 11 Annual Teaching Plans,” the department said. 

This year, in Grade 12, they are benefiting from a wealth of resources that were developed to assist the classes of 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 with learning and studying. These include previous diagnostic reports, question papers and study material.

Mweli has visited 162 study camps in different parts of the country throughout the year to support the Grade 12 learners.

The department further highlighted that the Class of 2024 has also benefited from being taught by teachers who have improved subject results in 2022 and 2023, making them motivated to improve performance in 2024.

On 14 August 2024, World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern and subsequently issued a set of temporary recommendations to scale up the emergency response.

South Africa had previously reported five unlinked mpox cases in 2022. Having confirmed zero cases in 2023, the country has experienced a resurgence of the infectious disease in recent months, reporting 25 laboratory-confirmed cases and three deaths between 8 May and 6 September 2024. These cases have been reported in Gauteng, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, with local transmission suggested for 24 cases and one imported case. 

However, there has been a significant change in the epidemiological data in recent weeks, with just one new case and no deaths reported since 2 August 2024, compared to 12 cases and three deaths in June, so far, the peak of the current outbreak. 

“With the support of partners including WHO, we have made significant progress in our efforts to contain mpox in the country,” says Foster Mohale, spokesperson for South Africa's National Department of Health. “But we must not become complacent because viruses mutate from time to time. The recent detection of a new mpox case in Western Cape should be a strong reminder that we must all remain extremely vigilant.”

To coordinate its response to the outbreak, the National Department of Health formed an mpox Incident Management Team comprised of experts from national and provincial levels and partners including WHO. In June, with WHO support, health authorities conducted two remote webinars on clinical management of mpox cases, training over 500 health workers and public health professionals. 
The department has also activated provincial response teams to implement priority interventions in hotspots, deployed rapid response teams to support community surveillance and case management, and intensified targeted public awareness campaigns. 

In addition to providing technical support and guidelines on mpox treatment to help ensure standardized patient care, WHO has donated 35 treatment courses of tecovirimat, an antiviral that is used to treat severe mpox cases in conjunction with symptomatic and supportive care. The Organization is supporting efforts to stockpile an additional 30 treatment courses of the medication for rapid deployment should further cases arise. 

South Africa is one of 14 countries in the African region that will be financially supported by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and WHO from September 2024 until February 2025 to draw up and roll out plans, including vaccination strategies, to continue its fight against mpox. The Mpox Continental Preparedness and Response Plan for Africa will see an estimated US$ 45.5 of a US$ 600-million total budget allocated to South Africa, most of which will be spent on the logistics of rolling out vaccines.  

“WHO remains committed to supporting health authorities in containing the mpox outbreak through coordinated efforts in treatment, surveillance, and public awareness,” says Dr Fabian Ndenzako, acting WHO Representative in South Africa. “I am pleased to see mpox control efforts targeting health workers, community members and key risk populations to prevent further transmission and manage this public health issue effectively.”

Gauteng launches campaign to ensure business compliance in townships

Gauteng MEC for Economic Development and Finance, Lebogang Maile, has launched the "Qondis’ Ishishini Lakho - Fix Your Business" campaign in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni.

This is part of government’s efforts to ensure business compliance in townships, informal settlements, hostels and CBDs.

A joint effort between the department, the Gauteng Provincial Treasury, the City of Ekurhuleni, SA Police Service, the Gauteng Liquor Board, the Gauteng Office of Consumer Affairs, Gauteng Gambling Board and relevant government agencies, "Qondis’ Ishishini Lakho - Fix Your Business" is primarily meant to assist business to comply with regulations that govern businesses in Gauteng, while simultaneously enforcing compliance with the same laws.

During MEC Maile’s monitoring and compliance blitz in Ivory Park, Winnie Mandela and Olifantsfontein townships, most of the businesses were closed in the neighbourhood’s high street. 

This suggested that most of them were non-compliant and shut down to evade monitoring inspections.

However, for shopping centres in the neighbourhood, it was business as usual and that is where inspections focused.

Tembisa was chosen partly because between February and September 2024, 203 cases of foodborne illnesses were reported in Gauteng - Ekurhuleni accounted for 116 of those - including 10 deaths. 

Four recent deaths were reported in Ekurhuleni and the victims were children between the ages of 03 and 13. 

As part of ongoing community outreach and strengthening engagement with learners, government assigned environmental health officials to address food safety concerns in local schools and communities.

MEC Maile said government was committed to helping emerging businesses access funding and market opportunities and pledged to soon host a funding symposium with the banks to help compliant and qualifying businesses access funding. 

He urged township businesses to consider other options, including cooperative banks and to pool resources together to fund expansion.

“The township economy is worth at least R100 billion but most of that money leaves the township. Businesses need the help of government to change that. We also need to solve the problem of the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few. Otherwise, the economy will not change,” he said.

MEC Maile undertook to attend the problem of the lack of ease of doing business, saying this was stifling the growth potential of many emerging businesses.

Also on site at the Rabasotho community hall were various government entities whose function is to register businesses and ensure their compliance. They availed their online services.

Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee, Nomadlozi Nkosi, explained that they were providing on-the-spot assistance to small and medium enterprises in the Ivory Park, Olifantsfontein and Winnie Mandela communities. 

The initiative was a significant step towards fostering a more competitive and sustainable business environment by holding the hand and assisting with the much-needed interventions.

SAPS District Commissioner of Ekurhuleni, Major General Anna Sithole, said they had run scores of raids in line with the Operation Shanela weekly campaign on businesses in Gauteng and had confiscated 3089 of contraband and counterfeit products. 

Around Tembisa, 191 liquor outlets were inspected and 112 of those outlets were closed due to non-compliance. 

This also resulted in the confiscation of over 105 872 15 millilitres of alcohol. 

A total of 114 spaza shop-focused inspections resulted in the confiscation of 5 265 counterfeit cigarettes and a total of 880 illegal body creams.

Sithole said this would benefit communities and respond to their concerns about sub-standard goods being sold at some of the shops in the townships. 

She called for this to happen weekly in order to have the desired impact in Gauteng.

“We welcome this brilliant initiative. It is an initiative that will complement the Commissioner’s whole government approach to law enforcement.

“We as law enforcement agencies pledge 100% commitment to work with multi-sectoral agencies to ensure that communities feel safe when they purchase foods. We take this opportunity of correcting wrong with right to ensure that business owners fix their businesses. Those who don’t will not trade with peace. The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) has announced that selected service points will be open on Saturdays to render services to clients and employers during the month of September.

“A decision to extend operating hours at UIF service points and to ramp up capacity was taken in anticipation of increased demand for real-time services, after the Pretoria High Court at the end of August 2024 issued an interim interdict preventing a service provider from implementing a new contract for support and maintenance services to the uFiling platform,” the Department of Employment and Labour said in a statement. 

uFiling is an online platform used by clients and employers to apply for UIF benefits or to register companies with the UIF, declare employees and pay over contributions to the Fund.

The platform is not connected to the main UIF system used to adjudicate and process claims. 

“Due to the uFiling platform not having any support or maintenance at this time, its services was suspended. The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) has since the suspension of uFiling processed more than 181 000 claims at service points around the country, totalling a pay out of R419 607 185,” the department said. 

Extended operating hours will be rendered from 07:30 until 16:00 at UIF service points within labour centres during September month as follows:
•    In Gqeberha, East London and Qonce in the Eastern Cape province.
•    At the Pietermaritzburg and Richards Bay labour centres in KwaZulu-Natal.
•    At the Emalahleni, Secunda, Middleburg, Malelane and Mbombela labour centres in Mpumalanga province.
•    At Mahikeng, Potchefstroom, Lichtenburg, Klerksdorp, Vryburg, Christiana, Brits, Taung and Rustenburg labour centre in the North West province.
•    Cape Town, Paarl, Mitchells Plain and Bellville in the Western Cape.

Registration of employers

New employer registrations can be done through BizPortal, available on https://www.bizportal.gov.za/services.aspx.

The department has urged its clients to note that BizPortal is only for employer registration and will not be able to register employees. Employee registration can be undertaken at a nearby labour centre.

Registration can also be done by downloading UI.8 and UI.19 forms from www.labour.gov.za and submitting the completed forms to e-mail address newui8registrations@labour.gov.za.

Declaration of employees

Employers with electronic payroll systems may declare their employees by sending live payroll files to e-mail address Declarations@labour.gov.za or by visiting a nearby labour centre for services. 

In case of a manual declarations an employer can download a UI.19 form from www.labour.gov.za and submit a completed form via email to uif.declarations@labour.gov.za.

Regarding contributions, the department said an employer pays contributions to the UIF before the 7th day of each month. Where the 7th day is not a “business day” such as a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, payments must be made on or before the last business day. 

“UIF contributions are made up of 2% of an employee’s salary. 1% is deducted from the salary of an employee and 1% contributed by the employer.

“Employers who are registered for tax purposes and/or the Skills Development Levy (SDL), must pay their contributions directly to the South African Revenue Services (SARS),” the department said. 

Employers can also pay contributions using bank details provided on the Department of Employment and Labour website www.labour.gov.za and use their UIF reference number as the reference for payment. 

“Through queue management, monitoring of operations and staff repurposing the UIF has been able to adequately handle claim volumes around the country. The Fund is confident that by extending working hours it will be able to maintain the status quo whilst developing alternative online solutions for clients and employers,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

World-renowned football federation, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) in partnership with VFS Global (www.VFSglobal.com), concluded extensive coaching courses held in Stellenbosch and in Durban earlier this year. The initiative is in line with VFS Global's community outreach initiatives across the globe with a focus on youth empowerment and skill development.

The KNVB-accredited course conducted under its WorldCoaches Programme in partnership with SAFA eThekwini, saw a total of 56 coaches from across Durban and Cape Town, with almost 50% of the participants being women. The coaches were accredited with a globally recognised certificate, as part of KNVB's WorldCoaches global drive of using football to drive social development.

The five-day workshop saw the coaches being exposed to the latest global trends of youth coaching and equipped with the necessary tools and information to be role models in their respective communities. In addition to tactical knowledge empowerment, key societal topics such as child protection, leadership, and social change formed part of the learning process for the coaches. The course hosted over 265 participating players throughout the two weeks, allowing the coaches to put together sessions they had learnt from the instructors into practice.

“This was truly an eye-opening experience for our coaches. Most of them are keen to learn and empower themselves, and thanks to such a programme, our region is not only producing future coaches. but key role models for our communities, thanks to KNVB”, said SAFA eThekwini Technical Director, Maxwell Ndlovu.

Speaking on behalf of the KNVB, instructor Bert Zuurman said the reception and eagerness shown by the coaches were encouraging and indicative of a bright youth football future for the region.

“We are honoured to share our knowledge and experience with these coaches, who are not just coaches but are now role models. Our programmes are uniquely designed to make use of football as a driver for social change, and it is important that our coaches are receptive to both the tactical and social development divisions of the programme. We wish all the coaches the best of luck, and sincerely thank SAFA eThekwini for providing us with the platform”, said Johan van Geijn, Founder of KNVB WorldCoaches.

Online vehicle renewals shows "phenomenal" growth

Vehicle owners are increasingly abandoning the long queues at vehicle licensing centres and opting to renew their vehicle licences online to save time.

An analysis of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) online platform, online.natis, shows that more than 2.5 million vehicle owners have opted for the convenience of the online platform since its launch in 2022.

“Monthly average online renewals on the natis platform have increased from 44 802 in August 2022 to 222 606 last month with an average daily renewal of 7 181.

“To access the service which offers motorists the convenience of renewing the vehicle licence from the comfort of their homes or offices, vehicle owners must register their profile on online.natis.gov.za. This will enable them to update their contact details namely cellphone numbers and email address.

“Registered vehicle owners are entitled to receive renewal notices and can pay AARTO enforcement orders online while renewing their vehicle licences. More than five million vehicle licence renewal notices have been sent out since the beginning of the year,” RTMC said on Monday.

The service is now also available through participating banks such as First National Bank, Capitec and Nedbank.

The RTMC is also able to assist fleet owners who wish to renew vehicle licences in bulk to save time and money.

“Scores of fleet owners have taken the convenience offered by the bulk renewals service and are reaping the benefits. The RTMC strives to deliver vehicle licences with three to five days and has been able to achieve this target 97% of the time,” RTMC said. - SAnews.gov.za

Mpox no threat to Africa Aerospace and Defence Expo

The highly anticipated Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) Expo and Air Show, which takes place from 18-22 September 2024, is under no threat from the mpox outbreak, according to the event organisers.

Mpox has seen a resurgence in South Africa in 2024 after no reported cases in 2023.

As of 18 August 2024, South Africa has recorded 24 cases, including three fatalities. 

The country has since logged 19 recoveries, and only two active cases are currently undergoing home isolation.

“While the numbers are low, the re-emergence of mpox underscores the importance of continued vigilance,” the statement read. 

The Department of Health, in collaboration with international organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), has taken robust measures to contain and manage the virus. 

These measures include enhanced testing, isolation protocols, and community engagement efforts to educate the public and reduce stigma. 

“Currently, there is no indication that the mpox virus will significantly impact or pose a direct threat to the upcoming AAD Expo. 

“The low number of active cases and the high recovery rate indicate that the situation is under control. We are closely monitoring developments to ensure the safety of all participants,” said AAD Exhibition Director, Nakedi Phasha. 

Organisers have since reassured expo visitors that there is no need to panic. 

“South African health authorities have effectively managed similar outbreaks in the past and continue to employ effective strategies, such as isolation, contact tracing, and appropriate medical treatment, to contain the virus. By following public health advice and maintaining awareness, the risk of a broader outbreak remains low.” 

Meanwhile, the organisers said they are committed to ensuring a safe and successful event for everyone involved. 

“The AAD Expo 2024 will proceed with all necessary precautions in place, and we are confident that, with your cooperation, we can enjoy a productive and memorable experience.”

According to the Department of Health, mpox presents with a range of symptoms that can vary in severity. 

The symptoms often appear within seven to 14 days after exposure but can take up to 21 days to manifest. 

“If you notice symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, and especially the characteristic rash associated with mpox, it is crucial to isolate yourself immediately and seek medical attention for a proper diagnosis. Early isolation and treatment are key to preventing the spread of the virus and ensuring your health and safety.” 

The department has urged people who experience any of the mpox symptoms, with or without international travel history to present themselves to a health facility for clinical observation and confine themselves to one place until their test results are available.

Meanwhile, to address the mpox outbreak in Africa, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has set up a 25-member incident management unit to support affected and at-risk countries. 
Africa CDC has signed a partnership agreement with the European Commission’s Health Emergency

Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) and Bavarian Nordic to provide over 215 000 doses of the MVA-BN vaccine. 

Africa CDC will oversee the equitable distribution of these vaccines, prioritising local needs across the affected Member States. – SAnews.gov.za
