Fallen soldiers paid the ultimate price

Location: News

Fallen soldiers paid the ultimate price

President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the 14 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) fallen soldiers as gallant heroes who “made the ultimate sacrifice so others may live in peace.”

“Thank you for your sacrifice that others may be free. You died on the battlefield, far from all you held dear. But you are home now. You have come to your resting place. We are here to receive you with open arms and to lay you to rest,” the President said.

This as the President and Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya, led the transfer ceremony and memorial service for the troops killed in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at Swartkop Air Force Base in Tshwane.

READ | Remains of 14 SANDF troops finally home

Thursday’s emotionally charged events saw the weather mirror the sombre mood as rain fell while the mortal remains of the soldiers were ushered in, offering a poignant backdrop to a painful moment for the nation.

The families of the deceased found some solace in receiving the remains of their loved ones as, addressing them and the nation, President Ramaphosa assured them that their sons had not died in vain.

“To the families gathered here, we thank you for your sacrifice for you have made the ultimate sacrifice as well, by letting this country have your sons so they can serve the cause of peace on our continent.

“And I thank you as a Commander in Chief of [the] Armed Forces because they have paid the ultimate price. We as South Africans join you in your grief as you feel pain as a result of your loss so overwhelming. As a nation we will forever be thankful to you as individual families for the sacrifice you have made. We will give them the honours that they deserve.”

Duty

The fallen soldiers had been deployed as part of South Africa’s commitment to peacekeeping efforts in the DRC under the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission. Their mission was to protect the defenceless and contribute to the vision of a conflict-free Africa.

“Our nation is in mourning for these brave souls who lost their lives in defence of our brothers and sisters in the eastern DRC. They lost their lives in the name of duty, in pursuit of peace, and in the cause of silencing the guns across our beloved continent,” President Ramaphosa said.

The President also extended condolences to the families of the soldiers from Tanzania and Malawi who perished in the same mission, thanking the Ugandan government and SADC partners for their support in bringing back the nation’s fallen heroes.

A nation in grief

Delivering his tribute, General Maphwanya expressed disappointment at the discourse surrounding SANDF’s deployment, urging South Africans to respect the sacrifice of those who had perished.

“As South Africans, we sometimes behave as if we enjoy inflicting pain on ourselves. A nation in grief for their fallen heroes should not be throwing accusations and counter-accusations about the merits and demerits of our deployment,” he said.

He also addressed the ongoing discussions about defence funding, arguing that while the issue remains pressing, it should not overshadow the moment of grief.

“Our fallen heroes would be asking if it is the right time to open a debate on defence funding. We have stated, without shame, that a drastic injection is required to build capacity in the SANDF, but these are interactions that we make with those who are supposed to listen to us,” he said.

Maphwanya added that “we should not be politicising this matter, saying the SANDF could have done better. Our people were armed, resourced, and capable of meeting the challenge they faced.”

President Ramaphosa also echoed General Maphwanya’s concerns over the politicisation of the soldiers’deaths, calling for a moment of unity and respect.

“He is decrying the politicisation of this whole mission and indeed the politicisation of the lives of our soldiers. His call is a correct one. This is not a time to be debating all the matters that have been current in our media but a time to mourn the death of our fallen soldiers,” he asserted.

Bravery

General Maphwanya paid tribute to the courage of the soldiers, stating that they had marched into the heart of darkness with unwavering resolve.

“Each member of the SANDF who answered the call to serve in the DRC carried out the mission with the spirit of selflessness and sacrifice. They fought gallantly against the M23 rebels who threatened the fragile peace, embodying the essence of what it means to be a defender of freedom,” he said.

Turning to the grieving families, he reassured them that their loved ones bravery would never be forgotten.

“I want you to know that your loved ones served with unwavering bravery and looked death in the face. They challenged what seemed like a daunting task that many wouldn’t have liked to face, and yet they persevered. Their commendable conduct personified the spirit of resilience, demonstrating a level of commitment that inspires us all. They did not back down in the face of adversity; instead, they rose to the occasion,” he said.

Heroes

As the military planes stood silent on the tarmac and soldiers saluted their fallen comrades one last time, the weight of their sacrifice was felt.

“To the families, we say, take comfort that they were heroes. Their work in the DRC was not just about maintaining order; it was about building bridges, fostering understanding, and creating pathways to lasting peace,” President Ramaphosa stated.

Quoting the poet S.E.K Mqhayi, the President offered words of comfort.

“Be consoled, all you orphans, Be consoled, all you widows, Somebody has to die, so that something can be built, Somebody has to serve, so that others can live.”

As South Africa bowed its head in collective mourning, the President reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to peace, stability, and honouring the memory of those who had paid the ultimate price.

Stabilising the continent

The President emphasised that the country has a long-standing history of participating in peacekeeping missions, proving its dedication to stability on the continent.

Despite the sacrifices made, including the loss of soldiers, South Africa remains steadfast in its mission to build and maintain peace.

“As South Africa we will not weaken in our resolve to realise the vision of an Africa free from war and conflict; an Africa free of poverty and underdevelopment; and an Africa at peace with itself and the world.

“The achievement of this vision is the most fitting tribute we can pay to our fallen heroes and the greatest honour to their memory. We will not forget them. These are the sons of our African soil, and these are the honoured heroes of our country,” President Ramaphosa said. – SAnews.gov.za

Transport infrastructure is the foundation of Africa’s economic progress

Transport infrastructure is the foundation of Africa's economic progress

Transport infrastructure is the cornerstone of regional economic progress and South Africa aims to offer practical collaboration on bi-national projects that would boost the African continent and its economy.

This is according to Deputy President Paul Mashatile who was speaking at the Standard Bank Infrastructure Focus Engagement with British development finance institutions in London, United Kingdom.

“By collaborating closely, we can create a more resilient and inclusive infrastructure ecosystem that benefits everyone,” the Deputy President said on Tuesday.

The country’s second-in-command is in the United Kingdom for the second leg of his weeklong working visit to improve trade and investment relations between the two nations.

He took the platform to urge the Standard Bank Group to exploit the opportunity afforded by infrastructure investment in South Africa.

“Let us embark on this road with a common goal of prosperity, sustainability, and advancement for our country. Our motto in the Presidency is the speed of execution, the cornerstone of getting things done,” he added.
He told the attendees that infrastructure investment in South Africa was a subject dear to him as it is the foundation of sustainable economic growth.

“South Africa stands at a crossroads where infrastructure development plays a pivotal role in driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and improving the quality of life for its citizens.”

As the country navigates through these challenging times, he believes it was “increasingly essential” for the Standard Bank Group to harness opportunities in infrastructure investment and steer the country towards a sustainable future.

According to the Deputy President, infrastructure investment in South Africa presents various prospects across various sectors, including transportation, energy, water, and telecommunication.

“By leveraging our expertise and partnerships, the Standard Bank Group can actively contribute to these projects, creating jobs, promoting local business development, and enhancing overall connectivity within the region.”

He also encouraged the bank to continue supporting the continent’s energy transition.

“South Africa has vast energy resources, including oil, gas, coal, and renewable energy sources, and with the right investment and expertise, the sector has the potential to unlock growth and improve the lives of millions of our people.”

Infrastructure pipeline

Meanwhile, he said government plans to prioritise the investment in infrastructure through improvements in the infrastructure pipeline, the execution of that pipeline and financing.

“Mobilising private sector resources to augment public sector capability and finances is necessary to fast-track the provision of infrastructure and improve effectiveness.”

He stated that government initiated various reforms to systematically get buy-in from greater private sector participation to improve spending and delivery outcomes.

The Deputy President acknowledged that government has a huge financing gap for its infrastructure portfolio that could further require more funding.

He said that in the 2023/24 Budget Review, the total infrastructure investment planned by the State over the next three years amounts to almost R943 billion.

National Treasury, according to Mashatile, is now trying to raise funding for the public sector infrastructure projects that are funded through the Budget Facility for Infrastructure using blended finance instruments.
These include concessional financing from Multilateral Development Banks and development partner countries.

Meanwhile, he said Treasury is in the process of screening the projects that could potentially be funded.

The Deputy President also acknowledged challenges that come with infrastructure investment in South Africa.
These include regulatory hurdles, funding constraints, and skills shortages requiring innovative solutions and collaborative efforts to overcome.

“As a leading financial institution, the Standard Bank Group is well-positioned to drive change and facilitate sustainable infrastructure development in the country. Through strategic investments, responsible financing, and a commitment to long-term growth, the Standard Bank Group can be a catalyst for positive change in South Africa’s infrastructure landscape.” – SAnews.gov.za

Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation expressed, “Firstly, I would like to thank all the viewers and followers for the amazing response we have received for our TV Program ‘Our Africa'. Our social media is flooded with lovely and inspiring messages from the viewers! This episode is indeed close to my heart as an African woman, as it is part of our signature campaign “More than a Mother”, the work we have created by our fashion designers and artists all over Africa was very encouraging and kept pushing us to work harder to address this sensitive issue and empower infertile women through information, health and change of mindset. And of course, we will keep addressing more sensitive social and health issues to be the voice of the voiceless in our beloved Africa”.

Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation further emphasized, “The messages of the designs are also focusing on the issue of male infertility and how fertility is a shared responsibility as it takes a man and woman to have a child. We have addressed this issue through our Fashion and Art with Purpose community. Together we can create a culture shift that will help our communities better understand and act on different issues. Through this episode, I also got a chance to thank my dear sisters, the African First Ladies who I have worked very closely with Merck Foundation for this Movement, as Ambassadors of Merck Foundation More Than a Mother.

I would also like to thank our viewers for the amazing response we have been receiving, this is indeed very inspiring and encouraging. Moreover, I would especially like to acknowledge the love we have been receiving from our social media followers, it is phenomenal.”

International messages of support on launch of Freedom Month

Several international nations have joined a chorus of voices in commemorating and congratulating South Africa as the country celebrates 30 years of freedom this year.

The launch of Freedom Month was held at Freedom Park on Tuesday morning in Pretoria with much fanfare, including the unveiling of the 30 Years of Freedom logo.

Delivering her message of support during the programme, High Commissioner of Zambia to South Africa, Mazuba Bernadine Monze, encouraged South Africans to remember and speak of the historical ties that the two countries share.

During the fight for liberation, Zambia was a sanctuary for safety for anti-apartheid freedom fighters, including Oliver Tambo and former President Thabo Mbeki.

“This celebration is truly Zambia’s celebration. I bring a message that is succinct and clear to the peoples of South Africa [that] across the Limpopo lies a land that has and will continue to stand firm in solidarity and brotherhood, and that land is called Zambia. To those of you who know the story, share it. Tell it to the generations and even those that are yet to come about our deep historical ties that bind us together as countries.

“The role of Zambia in South Africa’s liberation struggle… during the dark period of apartheid in South Africa, emerged as a beacon of hope and a steadfast supporter of the liberation struggle. Please allow me to congratulate [South Africa] on this auspicious occasion and wish… the people of this great nation a happy 30th anniversary of your freedom,” Monze said.

Ambassador Enrique Orta González of Cuba praised South Africa as a “symbol of solidarity and the struggle justice” for the downtrodden peoples of the world.

The nation of Cuba contributed to the fight against apartheid by offering training, medical care and study for struggle heroes in the 1960s.

“Today, on the eve of the 30 years of democracy in this beautiful country, we can affirm that South Africa has become a symbol of solidarity and struggle for justice. We are glad to see today an apartheid free, independent, sovereign South Africa in solidarity with the people fighting for the just causes of the world – supporting Palestine, Western Sahara, Venezuela and Cuba.

“Three decades after the defeat of apartheid, South Africa has risen as an example of the global South on how a society can leave hate and discrimination behind in order to be a better country, in order to become a true symbol of reconciliation, and give voice to those who stay in silence for many years.

“Let me take this opportunity to congratulate the South African government and people on the 30th anniversary of democracy. On behalf of the government and people of Cuba, our sincerest wish is for prosperity, well being and happiness for our dear sister, the Republic of South Africa,” González said.

The High Commissioner of Lesotho, Ntsime Jafeta, noted that South Africa “defied all odds” by achieving democracy in the face of the brutal apartheid regime.

“On behalf of the government of the Kingdom of Lesotho… I wish to extend our sincere greetings and best wishes as you celebrate Freedom Month. We note with great joy and satisfaction the fact that this year’s commemoration coincides with the Lesotho bicentennial celebration to mark 200 years since the formation of the Basotho nation by King Moshoeshoe I in 1824.

“Despite your vulnerability and pressure from the apartheid regime, you defied all odds. You stood firmly on the side of freedom, peace and democracy. Let us… celebrate the gains brought by the struggles of our forebears, and ensure that sweat and blood nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of peace, democracy and justice to make the world a better place,” Jafeta said. – SAnews.gov.za

Sharpeville massacre victims remembered

Location: News

Sharpeville massacre victims remembered

President Cyril Ramaphosa has encouraged South Africans to continue to honour those who fought for the rights that all enjoy today and hold dear.

President Ramaphosa delivered the keynote address at the Human Rights Day commemoration in Sharpeville, Gauteng on Thursday, held under the theme: “Three Decades of Respect for and Promotion of Human Rights”.

“Sixty-four years have passed since the ground on which we gather here in Sharpeville bore witness to one of the worst atrocities committed by the apartheid regime against the South African people.

“And although many decades have passed, we still remember with great sorrow and pain the 69 people who were killed and the many more who were maimed as they protested in peace against the grave injustices imposed upon them,” the President said.

Earlier, President Ramaphosa led a wreath laying ceremony at the Sharpeville memorial site in commemoration of South Africans who laid their lives in sacrifice for the struggle for the attainment of human rights and democratic South Africa.

He also met with family members of the fallen Sharpeville Massacre victims during the wreath laying ceremony.

Today’s gathering, he said, was held to trace the journey as a nation over the last 64 years, from a state of discrimination and repression to a land of democracy and freedom.

“Ours was a journey of relentless struggle. We still recall how every black South African – African, Coloured and Indian - was denied the basic human rights to which they were entitled.

“We recall how many generations of black South Africans were denied the right to life and dignity, the right to equal treatment, the right to vote and to be heard, the right to live where they want, to work in the trade of their choice, the right to education and health care, the right to the protection of the law,” he said.

The President reflected that it was a difficult and dangerous journey travelled by community activists and union organisers, by traditional leaders and religious groupings, by freedom fighters and underground operatives, by political prisoners and exiles, and by friends and supporters across the world.

He added that it was a struggle to realise the rights contained in the Bill of Rights which called for equal treatment of all people, equal access to land, direct representation and voting rights.

“Ours was a struggle to realise the vision of the Freedom Charter, adopted by the Congress of People in 1955, of a South Africa that is prosperous and free and in which all enjoy equal rights and opportunities.

“It was these principles and these ideals, these struggles and these sacrifices, that enabled the achievement of our democracy and the adoption of the Bill of Rights that is at the centre of our democratic Constitution,” he said.

And as the country celebrates this milestone, President Ramaphosa said the country will reflect on the journey taken towards the full realisation of the fundamental freedoms contained in the Bill of Rights.

“We will count the elections that we have held every five years since 1994, elections that have been peaceful, free and fair and that have reflected the will of the people.

“We will assess the institutions that make our laws, that both represent the views and regularly seek the counsel of the South Africans people. We will point to the independence of our judiciary, the vibrancy of our civil society, the activism of our trade unions and the freedom of our media.

“As we celebrate 30 years of freedom, we will reflect on the progress we have made in progressively realising the social and economic rights contained in our Constitution,” he said.

The President said the country has much to celebrate as he detailed the progress made by government throughout the years.

He highlighted that millions of South Africans have been lifted out of dire poverty, while eight out of every 10 households have proper housing.

“Nine out of every 10 homes have electricity and access to clean drinking water. South Africans are living longer. Far fewer women are dying in child birth and far fewer children are dying in infancy.

“More children from poor families are completing school, passing matric and going on to study at universities and colleges,” he said.

The President said this has been made possible because the country has focused on correcting the injustices of the past and meeting the needs of the poor and excluded.

He highlighted that working together, nearly 4 million hectares of land has been returned to people who had been dispossessed of their land and acquired over 5 million hectares of land for redistribution and to provide security of tenure for labour tenants and other farm dwellers.

Government has provided social grants for children, the elderly and people with disability, and recently introduced a special social relief of distress grant for unemployed people.

Government also provides free daily meals to millions of school children and has expanded the number of fee-free schools and has massively increased funding for students from poor and working-class families to attend universities and colleges.

“As our economy has changed, more and more people have been able to exercise the right to freely choose their trade, occupation or profession. Our economy has tripled in size since 1994.

“While unemployment still remains unacceptably high, the number of South Africans in employment has more than doubled in the last 30 years. The proportion of executive management positions held by black people increased almost five-fold between 1996 and 2016,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Township and village tourism acquire a lot to offer

Township and village tourism have a lot to offer

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille says township and village tourism have much to offer in terms of boosting the economy.

“I firmly believe that township and village tourism has so much to offer and so much untapped potential and we must place more focus on this area to showcase our hidden gems and the true magic of our villages and townships,” de Lille said.

Addressing the inaugural Township and Village Tourism Expo hosted by the SA Township and Village Tourism Organisation (SATOVITO) at the Cradle of Humankind, in Morapeng on Thursday, de Lille said the expo aims to shine a light on tourism products in villages and townships where people from disadvantaged backgrounds are breaking through barriers to take their claim in the tourism sector.

“I have found only warm, kind and committed people in tourism in every part of this country and I look forward to exploring even more hidden gems this year and pushing harder with all partners to take the entire tourism sector to the next level,” De Lille said.

De Lille commended the organisers of expo for their objective to foster strong community engagement by involving local residents, community leaders, and stakeholders in the planning and execution of the expo.

“Promoting township and village tourism is an integral part of diversifying our tourism offerings so that we can grow the economy, the sector and the number of jobs created by this sector.

“I am therefore pleased that the South African National Convention Bureau has provided financial support to this expo and that SA Tourism has also supported it through marketing it at global events such as World Travel Market London.

“I have often said that we must place more on emphasising township and village tourism, especially in the annual Sho’t Left campaign and later today there will be workshop on this annual campaign by SA Tourism,” the Minister said.

De Lille said her department wanted to help the organisers to achieve their vision to develop townships and villages into smart residential and business hubs that foster job creation, social cohesion and market indigenous tourism experiences.

“We are your partner to transform the tourism industry and expand the value chain to be more inclusive and attract tourism investment to townships and villages.

“We need to showcase our culture, history, indigenous cultures and people to visitors from all over the world because I am certain that those are the experiences that will leave them with memories they will treasure forever and stories that will captivate them for years to come.

“We need to do better at marketing our history and cultures and show more people places like what is known as “Nobel Street” where we showcase Vilikazi Street in Soweto as being the homes of two Nobel Peace Laureates, our dear Tata Madiba and Archbishop Desmond Tutu,” de Lille said.

De Lille said history has helped transform the area around Vilikazi Street into a thriving business community but there are many more spaces and places like these all over South Africa which can be showcased.

The Tourism Incentive Programme is a package of support programmes aimed at stimulating the growth, development and transformation of the South African Tourism sector.

“Through these incentives, the department aims to transform and achieve accelerated growth in the tourism sector. This in turn contributes to the achievement of the department’s objectives to stimulate enterprise growth, job creation, revenue growth and an enhanced visitor experience,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za
