The International Day of Plant Health was observed on 12th May, 2023 at the national level in the premises of the Ministry of Agriculture under the theme “Plant Health for Environmental Protection”.

Mr. Tekleab Misghina, General Director of Regulations and Inspection at the Ministry of Agriculture indicating that the International Day of Plant Health is being observed for the second time at the international and national level said that plants and environment have strong bondage.

Noting that human activities and climate change are creating pressure on the health of plants, agriculture, and the food system, Mr. Tekleab called for a coordinated global effort to address the challenges.

Mr. Tekleab also said that the Ministry of Agriculture is closely working with the International Plant Health Society and International Plant Protection Convention in controlling pests that are causing plant diseases.

Mr. Seid Nuredin, head of Seeds Resource Control, on his part, said that the objective of the International Day of Plant Health is to raise the awareness of the public, eradicate hunger and poverty as well as protection of biodiversity and the environment.

Mr. Seid also said that the Ministry of Agriculture in partnership with Government institutions and stakeholders is working in controlling desert locusts and other pests as well as encouraging farmers to use organic fertilizers and pesticides.

International Day of Plant Health is being observed for the first time at the international and national levels.

 President Isaias Afwerki and his delegation in the morning hours of today, 14 May, arrived in Beijing for a four-day official visit to China on the invitation of President Xi Jinping.

Upon arrival at Beijing International Airport, President Isaias and his delegation were accorded a warm welcome by Mr. Sun Wedong, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The official State Reception Ceremony and meetings with President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Qiang are scheduled for tomorrow.

The two Heads of State will discuss political, economic, finance, development, and, trade issues to further consolidate the warm bilateral partnership that exists between the two countries.

The two leaders will also discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The official visit of President Isaias Afwerki to the People's Republic of China will have a significant contribution to consolidating the bilateral relations between the two countries that have been developing in the past 30 years.

The Independence Cup that commenced its journey in the Gash Barka Region on 12 May from Molqui semi-urban center, accompanied by Ambassador Mahmud Ali Hirui, Governor of the region, and Army Commanders of Western Command toured historical sites in the sub-zones of Shambuko and Laelai-Gash.

Upon arrival at the historical sites, the Independence Cup was awarded a warm welcome by the residents and members of the Defense Forces featuring cultural and artistic performances as well as military parades.

The Independence Cup is expected to tour the sub-zones of Golij, Teseney, Forto-Sawa, Haikota, Gogni, and Barentu.

The offices of Eritrea's Consul General and Public and Community Affairs in Germany organized meetings to nationals in the German cities of Nuremberg, Munich and Karlsruhe from 30 April to 7 May focusing on strengthening organizational capacity.

At the seminars that were conducted under the theme “Heroic Feat Anchored on Cohesive Ranks”, Mr. Kibreab Tekeste, Eritrea's Consul General, gave extensive briefing on the objective situation in the homeland as well as on the significance of strengthening organizational capacity.

Reminding the participants to become visionary, to adhere to the noble societal values and exercise technology in improving their capacity, Mr. Kibreab called for strengthening organizational capacity and participation in the national affairs.

Pointing out that the Eritrean history is history of challenges and resilience, as well as heroism and perseverance, Mr. Kahsai Tewolde, head of Public and Community Affairs, called on the youth to comprehend their history and adhere to the noble societal values.

The participants on their part indicating the importance of the seminars in raising their understanding on the objective situation in their homeland called for its sustainability.

Schools' Independence Week in the Central region commences today, 8 May at Barka Secondary School here in the Capital.

Mr. Fessehaye Haile, Governor of the Central Region, and Mr. Yousuf Saiq, head of Organizational Affairs of the PFDJ attended the opening ceremony of the week being held in connection with the 32nd Independence Anniversary being celebrated under the theme “Heroic Feat Anchored on Cohesive Ranks”.

In a speech he delivered during the opening ceremony, Mr. Belay Habtegabir, head of the Education branch stated that this year's Schools' Independence Week is unique for it is being held during a time we have prevailed against our enemies and looking forward to a better epoch as well as at a time we are expecting the Independence Cup that contains sacred soil from all the historical places it is touring.

Mr. Tedros Abraham, head of the Ministry of Education branch in the Northern East sub-zone on his part, stated that the Schools' Week reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of our people, as well as the history of the armed struggle and the progress of our development programs, highlight the Independence celebrations nationwide.

The Central Region Schools' Independence Week will continue until 18 May and 116 kindergartens, 79 elementary, 40 Junior, as well as 22 Secondary schools will participate.
