With global demand for PGMs increasing - driven by applications in electric vehicles and clean energy technologies – Anglo American Platinum is positioning itself as an instrumental part of the continent's PGM value chain. Concurrently, the continent has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate climate change impacts, given that Africa faces the worst impacts of the climate crisis worldwide. It is within this juncture that the need to fast-track technology adoption and enhance innovation becomes clear.  

Africa's unique energy challenges can be addressed through the rapid roll-out of various energy sources, and progress is already being made to achieve this. Africa's biggest oil producers seek to increase oil production, with Angola planning to sustain output above one million barrels per day (bpd), Nigeria targeting 2.5 million bpd while Libya strives for 2 million bpd. In tandem, gas-rich nations across the continent aim to increase LNG output. The Republic of Congo targets 3 million tons per annum (mtpa) with the start of Congo LNG phase two in 2025; Mozambique is advancing its Rovuma Basin projects; while Senegal and Mauritania eye 5 mtpa at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project, following first production in 2024.  

Meanwhile, countries are advancing their clean energy portfolios, with projects in nuclear energy and green hydrogen taking shape. Upcoming green hydrogen projects include the 2,100 kilo-ton-per-annum (ktpa) ACME Group Sokhna project in Egypt (2030); the 1,200 ktpa Project Nour in Mauritania; the 900 ktpa AMAN project in Morocco, among others. In the nuclear sector, over 15 GW of operational capacity is targeted across the continent by 2035. South Africa is expanding production capacity, Egypt is developing its first facility – comprised of four reactors – while over 10 countries are looking at embracing nuclear technology. To make energy poverty history by 2030, the continent will need all of these energy sources.  

The AET 2025 conference steps into this picture to foster collaboration across the entire energy value chain in Africa. The event underscores the need for an integrated and diverse energy mix, with technology driving energy efficiency and sustainability. By leveraging innovation, the event emphasizes the value of groundbreaking technology and innovative investments.

The 2025 Future Hospitality Summit (FHS) Africa Awards will honour three exceptional individuals whose leadership, vision, and integrity have profoundly shaped the hospitality industry in Africa and beyond. David Green, CEO of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, will be recognised with the FHS Outstanding Contribution to Hospitality Award; William E. William E. Heinecke, one of Asia's most influential entrepreneurs, was honoured with the FHS Leadership Award in recognition of a nearly six-decade-long career that began with a bold idea and just US$1,200. At the age of 17, Heinecke registered his first company under the name ‘Minor'- a nod to being underage at the time - and went on to create Minor Hotels, a diversified hospitality group that today operates more than 530 hotels across 56 countries under brands including Anantara, Avani, Oaks, Elewana, and Tivoli. His acquisition of NH Hotel Group in 2018 marked a turning point for global expansion and established Minor as a powerhouse in the international hospitality scene. A vocal advocate for sustainability and social impact, Heinecke also founded the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, the Heinecke Foundation for education, and the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation. His accolades include HOTELS Magazine's Corporate Hotelier of the World and Entrepreneur of the Year at the Asia Pacific Enterprise Awards. Now Chairman of the Board of Minor International, Heinecke continues to guide the group's long-term strategy and philanthropic mission.

David Green's recognition reflects more than a decade of transformative leadership at the helm of Cape Town's iconic V&A Waterfront. Since his appointment in 2009, Green has guided the historic precinct through a R8 billion reinvention, turning it into one of Africa's most successful mixed-use destinations. Under his stewardship, the Waterfront has become a blueprint for sustainable urban development - supporting nearly 80,000 jobs, empowering local entrepreneurs, and embedding environmental and social responsibility at the core of every initiative. TotalEnergies to Drill in 2026, Regulatory Reform Gains Momentum

TotalEnergies is preparing to begin offshore drilling in South Africa in 2026, pending final regulatory approvals, according to Mike Sangster, the company's SVP for Africa Exploration & Production. Speaking at the Invest in African Energy Forum in Paris, Sangster emphasized the company's ambition to expand its multi-energy strategy on the continent, with South Africa poised to play a central role in that vision.

The announcement coincides with significant legislative developments in South Africa's oil and gas sector. In April, the government published the draft regulations for the Upstream Petroleum Resources Development Act, inviting public comment and signaling a renewed commitment to reform. The regulations will outline the procedures for implementing the Act – approved in November but not yet in effect – ushering in a more modern, investor-oriented framework for hydrocarbon exploration and production.

Establishing a Fit-for-Purpose Framework

For years, the lack of a clear and sector-specific legal framework has impeded South Africa's ability to attract sustained exploration activity and unlock its offshore potential. The Upstream Petroleum Resources Development Act aims to rectify this by establishing transparent licensing systems, defining state and Black Economic Empowerment participation and clarifying production-sharing mechanisms.

Crucially, the Act seeks to create an enabling environment that balances investor interests with national development goals. It provides detailed guidance on the application and granting of exploration and production rights, introduces more predictable fiscal terms and offers mechanisms to manage environmental and social responsibilities. By aligning South Africa's regulatory framework with international best practices, the government is positioning the country to compete more effectively for operator capital, particularly as global exploration budgets become more selective and carbon-conscious.

Igniting Interest in the Orange Basin

South Africa's offshore acreage, particularly in the Orange Basin, has been gaining momentum on the back of transformational discoveries in neighboring Namibia. Within South African waters, the Brulpadda and Luiperd finds in Block 11B/12B remain the most commercially significant to date, estimated to hold more than 600 million barrels of oil equivalent. While TotalEnergies has since exited the block, citing internal portfolio shifts, the company's re-engagement with the broader South African market suggests continued belief in the basin's long-term potential.

Last August, TotalEnergies officially became operator of offshore exploration Block 3B/4B, positioned southeast and on trend with neighboring oil discoveries, including the company's Venus discovery in Namibia. The Orange Basin represents one of the last untapped frontiers capable of delivering large-scale oil and gas volumes. With a more supportive regulatory backdrop taking shape, South Africa is well-positioned to attract the kind of deepwater investment needed to de-risk its acreage and build out its domestic gas infrastructure — a critical step toward energy security and industrial growth.

Positioning South Africa for Investment at AEW 2025

As the government works to implement the Upstream Petroleum Resources Development Act, African Energy Week (AEW) 2025: Invest in African Energies in Cape Town offers a high-profile platform to promote the country's renewed upstream vision. AEW is expected to convene regulators, IOCs and service companies to discuss the commercial implications of the legislative overhaul and chart a path forward for exploration and development in South Africa.

COGTA Committee Welcomes Seminal Review of White Paper on Local Government

The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has welcomed the launch of the seminal Review of the 1998 White Paper on Local Government, hailing it as an important step towards more accountable and efficient local governments, resulting in better service delivery.

Committee Chairperson Dr Zweli Mkhize and several committee members attended the launch event in Johannesburg on Monday. The review was launched under the theme “Every municipality must work – A call to collective action”.

The Chairperson said the review is long overdue, as a lot has changed in local government since the first White Paper, with many municipalities struggling and dysfunctional. He said the vision for local government as an important lever in addressing historical injustices and improving people's lives has not aligned with the lived realities in communities over the years.

“Now, this review provides an important pause to reinvigorate and chart a new trajectory of growth, development and efficiency for our municipalities,” the Chairperson said.

He invited all stakeholders to make their voices heard in the planned consultations that will follow, as the review is set to address service delivery challenges in municipalities and the funding model for local government, among other things.

“The committee is looking forward to interacting with the review process of the White Paper on Local Government,” said the Chairperson.

The review is expected to be finalised by March of next year.

The Deputy Minister will champion South Africa’s commitment to equitable access and quality education for all by taking part in key discussions and engagements, at the EWF, relating to themes such as girls' education, preventing gender-based violence, fostering public-private partnerships to drive innovation in education, and promoting vocational education and skills development as pathways for youth employment and economic growth.

Minister Kubayi travels to Ghana

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, will travel to the Republic of Ghana to participate in a high-level Retreat on the Kampala Amendments and International Criminal Justice.

“The Retreat will bring together Ministers of Justice and senior officials from all 33 African States Parties to the International Criminal Court (ICC), alongside representatives from the ICC Presidency, the Assembly of States Parties (ASP), the ICC Trust Fund for Victims, senior African Union officials, and international legal experts,” the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Development said on Sunday.

Her visit is scheduled to take place from 19 to 21 May 2025.

The event follows the successful pilot retreat in Johannesburg in October 2024, which raised awareness and fostered a sense of ownership among African States Parties to advocate for a crime of aggression regime that is both fair and legitimate and began the process of an amendment proposal being submitted by African States.

“The Kampala Amendments on the Crime of Aggression are a set of legal changes adopted in 2010 at the Review Conference of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), held in Kampala, Uganda.

“These amendments define the Crime of Aggression and establish the conditions under which the ICC can exercise jurisdiction over it. An act of aggression includes using armed force by one state against another in violation of the United Nations (UN) Charter, such as, invasion, military occupation, annexation by force, bombardment, or blockade,” the Ministry explained.

The meeting in Johannesburg laid the groundwork for an Africa-led amendment proposal and reaffirmed the continent’s commitment to a fair and legitimate international criminal justice framework.

“South Africa remains a committed advocate for international legal accountability. Minister Kubayi’s participation highlights the country’s support for multilateralism, the fight against impunity, and the advancement of an inclusive and balanced global justice system,” the Ministry said.

Organised in collaboration with the Ministries of Justice of Ghana, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Accra retreat will build on the Johannesburg outcomes and further deliberate on the amendment proposal submitted by the Group of Friends (GoF).

This surge reflects growing investor appetite, strengthened policy frameworks and a renewed focus on project bankability.

In this context, African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025 – taking place from September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town – serves as the continent's leading forum for turning vision into tangible investment. With a focus on public-private partnerships (PPPs), blended finance and strategic energy projects, the event brings together government leaders, financiers, developers and technology providers to advance deals, foster collaboration and position Africa as a global energy leader.

Building Institutions for Local Investment

A wave of institutional and policy advancements is laying the groundwork for increased local investment in energy. A key milestone is the establishment of the Africa Energy Bank (AEB) by the African Petroleum Producers' Organization (APPO) and Afreximbank, with an initial capital of $5 billion. Headquartered in Abuja and set to launch in June 2025, the AEB will finance oil and gas infrastructure projects, serving as a bold step toward regional energy self-sufficiency and resource sovereignty.

At the same time, the African Development Bank (AfDB) is supporting long-term energy planning. In Algeria, the AfDB has launched a strategic dialogue to shape the 2025–2030 Country Strategy Paper, aligning national goals with sustainable, diversified energy development.

In South Africa, the success of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) illustrates how structured procurement can generate market certainty. The latest round secured 1,760 MW of solar PV capacity backed by R31.4 billion ($1.7 billion) in investment — with 49% local ownership and 46% equity held by Black Economic Empowerment entities.

Scaling Investment through PPPs and Blended Finance

As Africa's energy project pipeline expands, PPPs and blended finance have become essential tools for scaling investment. The AfDB's $10 million concessional equity stake in the ARM-Harith Successor Infrastructure Equity Fund, a $200 million regional vehicle, highlights how development finance institutions can de-risk infrastructure and crowd in private capital. The fund supports AfDB's target to electrify 300 million people by 2030 through sustainable energy solutions.

Meanwhile, South Africa's Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Program illustrates the power of blended finance in scaling innovation. With R12.8 billion ($678.8 million) allocated to eight projects delivering 615 MW of storage across three provinces, the initiative enhances grid stability and achieved a 35% cost reduction from the first bid round – a clear sign of growing cost efficiency.

Frameworks for African-Led Growth

The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), ratified by over 48 countries, offers a powerful framework for prioritizing African-led energy development. By promoting intra-African investment flows and removing trade barriers, AfCFTA enables energy projects to be sourced, financed and executed within the continent. With Ghana spearheading the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative – engaging eight pilot countries – the agreement is fostering regional cooperation to scale African energy solutions and reduce external dependency. Once fully operational across more than 50 member states, AfCFTA is set to accelerate an Africa-first approach to infrastructure, technology, and capital deployment in the energy sector.

Meanwhile, the African Energy Commission continues to strengthen institutional cooperation across the African Union to support sovereign energy strategies. A prime example of African private-sector leadership is Coscharis Technologies' $4 billion solar project in Nigeria – the largest renewable energy initiative in West Africa – reflecting a shift toward domestically-driven, large-scale investment in clean energy that aligns with national priorities and regional ambitions.

In the mining sector, Eswatini is actively working to position itself as an emerging market for critical minerals, following the launch of the second phase of a national mineral mapping program in partnership with South Africa's Council for Geoscience in November 2023. Using AI-based geoscientific techniques, this initiative seeks to unlock the country's vast yet underexplored mineral wealth – ranging from gold and iron ore to a broader portfolio of high-demand critical minerals. As part of its outreach to global investors, Eswatini is creating an enabling environment for private sector participation in mineral exploration, production and job creation.

Stepping into this picture, Minister Dlamini's participation at AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025 aligns with the goals of Eswatini to open its doors to investors in both energy and mining. Similarly, India's state-run MOIL (apo-opa.co/4koDe1z) is in talks to develop manganese assets in Gabon, highlighting the country's growing role in the global manganese, EV and battery storage market.

Beyond manganese, Gabon is diversifying its mineral production base. Canadian company Millennial Potash Corp (apo-opa.co/43gSiHB) is advancing the Banio Potash Project, where high-grade potash intersections were confirmed in May 2025. Once operational, the project will be Gabon's first commercial potash facility, supplying a global market driven by demand for fertilizers and pharmaceutical applications.

FIND Convenes African Union Ambassadors

As part of its continuing outreach to the parts of the world that it was set up to serve, FIND  (www.FINDdx.org) hosted Ambassadors from 26 African countries and the African Union for a meeting at FIND's offices in the Global Health Campus in Geneva. The Ambassadors received an overview of FIND's work in their respective countries, future prospects and were made aware of FIND as a value-added partner for countries with respect to diagnostics.

“The foundation of any successful health response is diagnosis. From early detection to pandemic preparedness, our collaboration with the African Union is essential to guaranteeing that no one is left behind,” said Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, CEO of FIND. “FIND's  vision is focused on both catalyzing innovation and ensuring access to diagnostics in low- and middle-income countries.”

In order to improve diagnostic systems and get ready for potential health and pandemic risks, FIND's leadership presented its updated strategic vision as a precursor to this year's Diagnostics Day event to be held on 21 May, which will take place on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly.

The ambassadors of the African Union, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Sao Tomé and Principe, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, The Gambia, Togo, and Zimbabwe were present.

The Ambassadors led a lively discussion which touched upon a number of key issues, including South-South collaboration; pandemic preparedness and response; the role of health in national development; national essential diagnostics lists; the growing issue of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes; and ensuring sustainable financing for diagnostics and health in general.

Among the meeting's main conclusions were:

  • Commitment to strengthen regional manufacturing of diagnostics and other health technologies.
  • Consensus on increased AU-FIND cooperation to country and Africa CDC's diagnostic priorities.
  • Support for FIND's function as a technical partner to expand access to vital diagnostics for illnesses like HIV, TB, malaria, mpox and emerging outbreaks.
  • Diagnostics acknowledged as a key component of health security and universal health coverage.

“In this moment of dramatic change, African leaders are stepping up to fill the power vacuum left by a world in turmoil where women and children are being left behind and left to die, particularly on the African continent – the continent with the greatest health burden,” said Dr Ayoade Alakija, FIND's Board Chair. “FIND will continue to support them on strengthening pandemic preparedness and ensuring quality diagnostics are available to all.”

FIND's Diagostics Day (https://apo-opa.co/44AX9pc) event on 21 May at the Vieux Bois in Geneva will bring leaders from health from around the world to agree on next steps to ensuring quality and accessible diagnostics for all.

AEW 2025, Spanish Chamber of Commerce in South Africa Join Forces to Foster Energy Partnerships

The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in South Africa has partnered with the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies conference to foster collaboration between Spanish and South African energy companies. The partnership builds on dual goals of driving investment and development in South Africa and will support greater participation by Spanish firms at this year's edition of the conference – scheduled for September 29 to October 3.

As a non-profit entity whose main objective is the promotion of commercial, economic and industrial relations between Spain and South Africa, the Chamber of Commerce seeks to strengthen business prosperity and trade between the two nations. At the heart of this strategy is the energy industry, with the Chamber committing to exposing its members to emerging opportunities in both Spain and South Africa. At AEW: Invest in African Energies, the Chamber will play an instrumental part in strengthening energy relations and trade, supporting market entry by Spanish firms into South Africa.

The opportunities for heightened collaboration between Spain and South Africa are extensive. While Spain is a net-importer of oil and gas, Spanish oil and gas firms have seen great success abroad, highlighting the level of expertise the country has to offer. Spanish companies such as multinational energy and petrochemical firm Repsol already have a strong presence in Africa, offering significant expertise that could help unlock South Africa's energy industry. The company has been active in Algeria since 1973, recently receiving approval to invest up to €731 million in oil and gas blocks in the country. The Chamber has also been active in Libya since the 1970s and is implementing an ambitious exploration agenda in the country. It plans to drill nine wells consecutively via two drilling rigs by November 2025, and aims to increase production to 350,000 barrels per day (bpd) in the country. As of December 2024, production stood at 300,000 bpd.

Meanwhile, for South Africa, which is only just starting to realize the full potential of its oil and gas market, Spanish partnerships could propel a hydrocarbon evolution. Despite being a frontier market, South Africa has proven oil and gas discoveries and significant upside potential. The Luiperd and Brulpadda discoveries, for example, are the largest discoveries of natural gas resources in South Africa to date. Situated in the Outeniqua Basin, operator Africa Oil Corp plans to conduct surveys within the Block 11B/12B area to determine a development plan. Additionally, South Africa's Orange Basin – shared with Namibia where several high-impact finds have been made – offers strategic opportunities for billion-barrel finds. International companies have recently expanded their footprint in the basin, led by firms such as Eco Atlantic, TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy.

In the green energy sector, Spain is spearheading Europe's energy transition through rapid developments in green hydrogen. According to the World Economic Forum, the country already accounts for 20% of green hydrogen projects announced in the European Union, with plans to create industrial clusters expected to bolster the bloc's clean energy adoption. South Africa is also targeting ambitious green hydrogen projects. The government introduced a R300 billion investment pipeline in 2023, targeting between 6 and 13 million tons of green hydrogen and derivatives production per annum by 2050. Up to 19 projects were identified for accelerated development and global support will be key to bring these projects into fruition. In 2023, Spain committed $2.3 billion to help fund South Africa's energy transition, but further support could unlock greater value from the country's renewable energy industry.

Returning to the vibrant city of Kigali, Rwanda from July 26-August 2, the event will bring together 320 young athletes from 20 African nations, and more than 20,000 spectators for a week of community, culture, basketball, education, and entertainment. The festival will unite communities, spark potential, and drive transformative change across the continent.

“Like these kids, I grew up on the continent,” says Ujiri. “As Africans, we know the landscape of what the kids go through. We know they dream just like we did and it really inspires me because, those kids have so much more talent and intelligence, they have ways to communicate now that we didn't. This festival is about showing them there is a path. We want them to never stop dreaming.”

Giants of Africa Festival 2025 will begin with an exhilarating Opening Show, as the athletes unite in an inspiring parade to kick off the weeklong celebration. South African international DJ sensation Uncle Waffles, MTV Video Music Award-winning choreographer Sherrie Silver, and Rwandan singer and songwriter, Kevin Kade will bring electrifying performances as Ujiri and special guests welcome all to the festivities. The awe-inspiring event will mark the beginning of life-changing journeys for Africa's leaders of tomorrow.

Taking place across Kigali Sports City's BK Arena, Amahoro National Stadium, Petit Stade, and Paralympic Gymnasium, the festival will showcase the full potential of Africa's sports and entertainment ecosystem, highlighting its social and economic value for the next generation and the continent at large. Giants of Africa Festival 2025 will also serve as the grand opening of Zaria Court. Founded by Ujiri, the new mixed-use sports, entertainment, and cultural district includes an 80-room hotel, sports bar, basketball court, event space, retail outlets, gym, five-a-side football pitch, and outdoor public areas.

The festival will conclude with a spectacular Closing Concert featuring performances from Nigerian Afrobeats artist Kizz Daniel and award-winning Nigerian singer/songwriter Timaya. Celebrity guests in attendance throughout the week will include Chris Tucker, Candace Parker, Robin Roberts, Chiney Ogwumike, Didier Drogba, Michael Blackson, Boris Kodjoe and more. Additional performers for both the Opening Show and Closing Concert will be announced in the coming weeks.

Since 2003, Giants of Africa has empowered youth through basketball, hosting camps and building courts across 20 African countries. The foundation not only teaches game fundamentals but connects young people with inspirational mentors who show how determination, leadership, and integrity can transform dreams into reality. Also central to their mission is basketball's unique power to transcend barriers and unite diverse communities. The Giants of Africa Festival is a culmination of this vision, featuring a weeklong youth basketball camp and tournament that brings together young men and women from 20 nations. Designed to address the country's longstanding power supply challenges by restructuring the sector, the act enables independent power producers to play a larger role in the country's industry. Additional policies include the Renewable Energy Masterplan – approved in March 2025 and aimed at incentivizing investment across the renewable energy value chain – and the Energy Action Plan – aimed at mitigating power outages by securing energy supply.

On the back of regulatory reform, the country has seen several milestones achieved across its electricity and energy sectors in recent months. In March 2025, the country brought the sixth and final unit of the Kusile Power Station online. Following the requisite testing and optimization over a six-month period, the unit will add 800 MW to the South African national grid. Once all units at the station are operational by H2, 2025, the station will contribute 4,800 MW to the grid, representing the country's largest infrastructure project. Meanwhile, a second new-build power station is on track for commissioning its fourth unit shortly. The Medupi station – a greenfield coal-fired plant – will produce 4,800 MW once all six units are online.

While these projects represent strategic steps towards improving generation and transmission capacity in South Africa, much more investment is required to achieve the country's power and energy goals. The Ministry of Electricity and Energy estimates that South Africa requires up to R440 billion to finance transmission development over the next ten years. To enhance energy access, the country seeks to modernize and expand the national electricity grid by 14,000 km during this timeframe, highlighting a major investment opportunity for global financiers. In March 2025, Minister Ramokgopa announced short-term plans to acquire up to 1,164 km of 400 kV transmission lines, covering the Northern Cape, North-West and Gauteng. The acquisition falls under the country's broader Integrated Resources Plan – which provides a roadmap for achieving South Africa's forecasted electricity demand - as well as the 2024 Transmission Development Plan, which seeks to expand the grid and achieve greater access rates across various provinces.

Meanwhile, spearheaded by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, the country is making significant strides towards scaling-up its renewable energy sector. A key driver of this is the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer program (REIPPP) – an initiative aimed at increasing generating capacity through private sector investment in solar, onshore wind and hydropower. The REIPPP has successfully channeled substantial private sector expertise and investment in the renewable industry, with 16 winners selected under Bid Window 7 in December 2024. This window targets 5 GW of renewable energy capacity, with the winning projects featuring 1.76 GW of solar – representing a combined investment of ZAR 31.4 billion – as well as 615 MW of battery energy storage - a combined investment of ZAR12.8 billion.

Nuclear energy has also been identified as a strategic sector by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy. South Africa currently hosts the only operational nuclear facility in Africa and has plans to scale-up capacity in support of anticipated rising demand. The Ministry of Electricity and Energy plans to spend R60 billion on its nuclear-build program and is seeking support from international nuclear experts to enhance capacity. African Mining Week to Spotlight Cutting-Edge Mining Tech

The upcoming African Mining Week (AMW) – Africa's premier gathering for mining stakeholders, scheduled for October 1-3, 2025 in Cape Town – will feature a dedicated Technology Forum. As African countries scale up mineral production to drive GDP growth, developers are increasingly adopting data analytics and digital tools to boost operational efficiency. U.S.-based startup KoBold Metals, which applies artificial intelligence (AI) to mineral exploration, entered the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in April 2025 to tap into the country's estimated $24 trillion in untapped mineral resources. The DRC – already the world's largest cobalt producer and a key copper supplier – could see its global mining profile rise significantly with KoBold's involvement. In Zambia, the company is advancing the $2 billion Mingomba project, one of the world's most promising untapped copper assets.

Similarly, in Zimbabwe, Caledonia Mining is investing $1.1 million in IT infrastructure upgrades at the Blanket Mine as part of its $41.8 million capital budget. The upgrades include new mine planning software and a digital clocking system to improve labor efficiency, with a goal to increase gold output from 76,656 ounces in 2024 to up to 77,500 ounces in 2025.

In Botswana, Botswana Diamonds is employing AI-driven exploration to expand beyond diamond mining, recently identifying new prospects for copper, silver, cobalt, gold, nickel, zinc and platinum group metals. “During the initial analysis of the big database, it became clear that the AI technology could be used to identify other unknown minerals opportunities – and so it turned out,” said John Teeling, Chairman of Botswana Diamonds.

Meanwhile, South African firms such as Kilken Platinum and Rio Tinto are deploying digital tools to unlock greater operational value. A joint report by Accenture and the World Economic Forum projects that digitalization could unlock up to R213 billion in additional value for South Africa's mining sector by 2026. Technologies such as predictive maintenance, autonomous operations and real-time data monitoring are helping firms streamline processes, reduce downtime and improve safety outcomes.
