Funda Mzantsi marks 13 years of championing literacy

Funda Mzantsi Championship -- a collaboration between the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) and George Local Municipality -- is turning 13, with this milestone set to be commemorated from 2 - 6 October in George, Western Cape.

Funda Mzantsi is a prestigious championship that celebrates literacy and fosters a love for reading. For the past 12 years, Funda Mzantsi has been an exciting and educational experience for readers and spectators alike.

A total of 299 inmates, representing all nine provinces, will once again face-off with book clubs from universities, public schools and the community.

Participants are assessed in four categories: impromptu reading, debating, spelling bee and book reviewing.

Imizila Yegazi, Indodana yoNongo, Umandisa, Small Things, Om op eiers te dans, Tshedza tsho tovhowa and Ngaka Mosadi mooka are some of the books prescribed for this year’s championship.

What makes Funda Mzantsi Championship unique is its feature of a direct interplay between book clubs from diverse backgrounds.

The initiative is aimed at enhancing the culture of reading and eradicating illiteracy in South Africa. The involvement of the NLSA ensures that there is harmonisation and proper coordination with other programmes sharing a similar objective.

The programme further equips inmates with the best possible opportunity for a second chance in life, the ability to make better choices and be more discerning citizens.

“It is through reading that we acquire knowledge, learn about different cultures, explore scientific discoveries, and understand the wisdom of the ages. Whether it is reading textbooks for academic excellence or diving into literature to cultivate empathy and creativity, reading is the bridge to a brighter future,” the Department of Correctional Services said in a statement. – SAnews.gov.za

Cable manufacturing company to create jobs

Location: News

Cable manufacturing company to create jobs

A Vereeniging-based cable manufacturing company aims to create jobs for locals through the expansion of its cable manufacturing facility starting from October 2023 to 2025.

M-TEC is one of the companies that made investment pledges at the fifth South African Investment Conference that was hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa in Johannesburg in April this year.

Pledges made at the conference contributed to bringing the total value of investment pledges, over a five-year investment mobilisation period, to R1.51 trillion, thereby exceeding the initial target of R1.2 trillion set by President Ramaphosa.

M-TEC made the R70 million investment pledge, and says there is an estimated 15 new jobs that will be created by the project from 2023 to end of 2024.

According to the Senior Sales Manager at M-TEC, George Lephoto, the investment is critical, as it will present economic development, economic growth and much needed job opportunities.

“The investment will reinforce and increase our productivity levels as well as our cable manufacturing capacity. This means more jobs will be created, capacity increased for the company, as well as profitability increased. This will undoubtedly boost our economy,” said Lephoto.

M-TEC manufactures cross-linked polyethylene cables.  They are producers of medium voltage, low voltage and aerial bundle cables, which are widely supplied to the local municipality, electrical distributors, construction industries and mines in South Africa and internationally.

The company is ranked as one of South Africa’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of aluminium overhead conductors, copper products, low and medium voltage power cables and various optical fibre cables. – SAnews.gov.za

An accused person’s right to be subjected to due process is sometimes in conflict with society’s desire to have guilty people convicted of their crimes. With this conflict in mind, we can analyse the difficulty in determining the admissibility of evidence,” says Johan …
