President calls for investments in SA

By Nosihle Shelembe

Beijing, China - President Cyril Ramaphosa has appealed to the business sector in China to invest in South Africa and make use of the great opportunities that exist for growth and development.

“South Africa presents a great opportunity for companies in Shenzhen to deepen their global value chains,” the President said on Tuesday.

The President made the remarks during the Shenzhen Business Roundtable at the occasion of the State Visit to China.

“With the capabilities that your companies have, we encourage you to play a more active role in our economy for mutual benefit,” he said.

Impressed by how Shenzhen has over four decades transformed into a leading digital supply chain hub, the President said South Africa can learn important lessons from Shenzhen.

Shenzhen is home to the most innovation-based technology start-up companies in China.

“Shenzhen is now a leader in the knowledge economy. We are keen to learn more about the city’s journey towards becoming a global centre of technology, innovation and growth. As we work to develop our economy, we value advice, support and technical assistance in planning, infrastructure and skills development.

“As we undertake this just and inclusive energy transition, we see many opportunities for growth and job creation in the green economy,” the President said.

South Africa has made a firm commitment to reduce its carbon emissions in line with global commitments.

“We are doing so at a pace and in a manner that is appropriate to our country’s development path.

“We have introduced policies to promote the development of the electric vehicle industry in South Africa.

“We are certain that companies such as BYD and CATL will find South Africa a unique and advantageous location that can serve as a hub to reach other markets,” the President said.

He said as a global leader in green energy and infrastructure, Shenzhen could be an important partner for South Africa as the energy sector undergoes a major transformation.

“Over the last few years, regulatory changes have stimulated substantial new investment in electricity generation capacity, mainly from renewable sources.

“We now have pipeline of over 130 confirmed private sector energy projects that will produce approximately 22 500 MW of electricity,” Ramaphosa said.

READ: China to assist SA in alleviating poverty

South Africa is also making significant investments in the electricity transmission infrastructure.

“In addition to securing our country’s energy supply, these investments will lay the basis for the further growth of our advanced manufacturing sector.

“This is further supported by the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which will drive a new era of industrialisation in South Africa and across the continent.

“With its abundant renewable energy resources and significant deposits of the minerals that are needed to drive green growth, South Africa is well-positioned to be a leader in the green energy and related industries,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za

President calls for narrowing of SA, China trade deficit

By Nosihle Shelembe

Beijing, China -  While China is South Africa's largest trading partner globally, President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for the narrowing of the trade deficit that exists between both countries.

Delivering opening remarks during the official talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday in Beijing, President Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of addressing the structure of South Africa’s trade.

“We have witnessed an increase in our bilateral trade. However, as South Africa, we would like to narrow the trade deficit and address the structure of our trade,” the President said.

China is South Africa's largest trading partner globally, while South Africa is China’s number one trading partner in Africa. Total bilateral trade grew from R614 billion in 2022 to R692 billion in 2023.

“As we enter a new phase of our partnership, we should continue to consult closely in pursuit of a just, equitable and prosperous world.

“I believe that our elevated levels of mutual trust will accommodate each other's interests, views and concerns – and deepen our cooperation as we build a shared future,” the President said.

President Ramaphosa is on a State Visit to the People’s Republic of China where he will also participate at the Forum on China – Africa Cooperation Summit (FOCAC).

South Africa and China’s bilateral relations are maintained at the level of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), underpinned by a Ten-Year Strategic Programme of Cooperation (2020 – 2029).

President Ramaphosa welcomed the proposal to upgrade the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to an All-Round Strategic Cooperative Partnership in a New Era.

“This will elevate our mutually beneficial political and economic ties for the benefit of both our countries and our people.

“We were encouraged by the inward procurement mission of Chinese companies last year. We urge for more sustainable manufacturing and job-creating investments,” the President said.

He said the development cooperation between the two countries continues to grow, covering many areas.

“Our two countries share many common objectives. Building on the firm foundation of solidarity, we continue to provide support in promoting our interests, those of the African Continent and the Global South.”

The newly formed Government of National Unity continues to place the achievement of the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the pursuit of a better Africa and world at the centre of its foreign policy.

“As our history demands, South Africa will continue to pursue progressive internationalism. We remain firmly committed to the One China Policy.

“South Africa will use the opportunity of hosting the G20 Summit next year to focus global attention on the developmental challenges confronting Africa and the countries of the Global South,” President Ramaphosa said. – SAnews.gov.za

Motsoaledi to open Pharmacists International Federation Congress

Location: News

Motsoaledi to open Pharmacists International Federation Congress

South Africa is hosting the first-ever International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Congress in sub-Saharan Africa.

The four-day congress, which kick-started on Sunday, 1 September 2024, is also part of the Pharmacy Month commemorative activities to raise patient awareness of the vital role pharmacists can play in the community’s healthcare and to improve communication between patients and pharmacists and pharmacy support personnel.

The gathering brings together pharmacists from all over the world to share expertise, network, share knowledge technology innovations and experience.

Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, is expected to deliver a keynote address at the official opening of the congress today. The gathering is being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The FIP is a non-governmental organisation representing over four million pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists and has been recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) since 1948.

It partners with some of the world’s leading health, policy-making, education and science institutions.

“During the congress, pharmacists from different backgrounds will have the opportunity to share expertise and knowledge to advance the profession to meet the healthcare needs in the challenging environment of endless disease outbreaks.”

According to the Department of Health, pharmacists play an important role in the healthcare sector as they also  foresee innovation in medicine such as vaccines which are critical in saving people’s lives, especially during outbreaks and pandemics as was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pharmacists are often the first point of contact for medicines dispensation due to their medication expertise, patient access, and medication management responsibilities.

This year’s Pharmacy Month is commemorated under the theme: ‘Let’s Talk About Vaccines’.

Meanwhile, the FIP Congress’ theme will focus on innovating for the future of healthcare.

The theme is based on the conviction that improving vaccination coverage and promoting a life-course approach to vaccination are global imperatives to which pharmacists can greatly contribute.

Pharmacists play an important role in promoting vaccination, raising awareness and educating the population about the health, social and humanistic benefits of vaccines, including gains in quality of life.

Participating stakeholders at the congress include the South African Pharmacy Council, the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa and the Independent Community Pharmacy Association. – SAnews.gov.za

China is South Africa's largest trading partner globally, while South Africa is China’s number one trading partner in Africa. Total bilateral trade grew from R614 billion in 2022 to R692 billion in 2023.

“In terms of Africa-China cooperation, South Africa believes that FOCAC must align with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, especially the Second Ten- Year Implementation Plan.

“South Africa believes implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will promote intra-Africa trade, boost economic growth and address the continent’s infrastructure deficit.

“Through FOCAC, China offers a unique platform to contribute to continental and regional initiatives including continental integration. The Minister inter alia reflected on cooperation within the multilateral context and through their membership of fora such as BRICS and the G20,” the department said.

The Minister welcomed China’s recent initiatives to facilitate a reconciliation agreement among Palestinian factions, who signed the Beijing Declaration.

“These efforts will contribute to peace building and demonstrate China’s significant role in this regard. The Minister further highlighted the need to also focus on conflicts on the African continent.”

Furthermore, both Ministers concurred that the United Nations, including the Security Council must be comprehensively reformed to bolster its ability to respond to global challenges and amplify the developing South’s representation within the Council’s memberships.

“This would better support the legitimate aspirations of emerging and developing countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America to assume a large role in international affairs, particularly the United Nations,” the department said. - SAnews.gov.za

A Sky-High Triple Salute: Emirates Celebrates South Africa With Spectacular, First-Ever A380 Flypast

Location: Sport
The Emirates Group

The low-level flypast marks three milestones for Emirates (https://www.Emirates.com/) and South Africa; The flying display celebrates the return of the second daily A380 service on the Dubai-Johannesburg route from 1 September.

Emirates, the world's largest international airline, takes to the skies to celebrate its longstanding and ongoing commitment to South Africa, with the country's first ever A380 flypast. Running up the score, the remarkable low-level aerial showcase also marks Emirates' first ever flypast in Africa and the first international airline to execute such a feat in South Africa.

Honouring its shared love for rugby with over 62,000 enthusiastic spectators, Emirates flew the world's largest commercial passenger aircraft over Emirates Airline Park, just before kick-off of the much-anticipated Springboks vs All Blacks test match. Flying at an altitude of just 500 feet above the ground, the iconic Emirates double-decker aircraft saluted rugby and aviation fans, in its latest signature livery.

The Emirates A380 took off from O.R. Tambo International Airport at 16:00, travelling at a speed of 140 kts, reaching the stadium at 16:58, perfectly timed to follow South Africa and New Zealand's national anthems. The impressive aerial feat follows months of thorough and cross-functional planning between stakeholders including multiple teams at Emirates, South African Civil Aviation Authority, Airports Company South Africa, Emirates pilots, Flight Operation Managers and Air Traffic Controllers working together with the Emirates Lions team. The teams worked together across every element of the aerial display, taking into account air traffic patterns at different times of the day with different weather and wind conditions.

UAE National Captain Mubarak Al Mheiri, A380 Deputy Chief Pilot commanded the flight, joined by Captain Khalid Binsultan and Captain Abdalla Al Hammadi, both Technical Pilots for the Airbus A380 and Captain Richard Fiess, A380 Captain. Captain Mubarak has flown with Emirates for 19 years and has completed over 7,200 hours in the cockpit of the iconic A380. He has commanded similar flypasts for Emirates, including UAE National Day celebrations (http://apo-opa.co/3yXQLen) for the past four years and headlining the commercial aircraft flypast formation at the 2023 Dubai Air Show (http://apo-opa.co/3Xrar3A). He also participated in the iconic flight promoting Expo 2020 (http://apo-opa.co/3TdcRAq), which saw an A380 fly around an Emirates Cabin Crew at the very top of the Burj Khalifa; the unprecedented formation flight with the Jetman (http://apo-opa.co/3TdcSV0) team back in 2015; and with the Red Arrows (http://apo-opa.co/3Tddj1o) in 2022.

Afzal Parambil, Country Manager of Southern Africa, Emirates said, “Tonight's record-setting flypast is a powerful display of our unwavering commitment to South Africa. It represents not just an achievement of technical excellence, but encapsulates our ongoing partnership with key stakeholders in South Africa, including the Civil Aviation Authority, O.R. Tambo International Airport, Emirates Lions and, of course, the strong relationship we've built with our customers and travel partners here over the years. For almost three decades, we've unlocked an array of choices for our customers, by offering an outstanding on-ground and in-flight experience coupled with seamless global connectivity, and we're not slowing down now. We look forward to the next 30 years, and beyond, of serving South Africa and spotlighting its many attractions to the world.”

Pieter Burger, Ellis Park Stadium Managing Director, said, “The flyover has become such a pre-match entertainment staple at the iconic Emirates Airline Park. First witnessed in 1995 at the final of the international rugby showpiece where the South African national rugby team was victorious, to have had this moment tonight against the very same opposition was a thrilling experience for fans watching at the stadium and at home.

We are extremely grateful to our long-time partner Emirates who were pivotal towards the success of this project, together with all other role players involved. From a lasting memory perspective, this will certainly be up there for those who had the privilege to witness the moment.”

The flypast also marks the return of Emirates' second A380 service on the Dubai-Johannesburg route, enhancing more customer choice and travel options with Emirates' iconic onboard products and world-class service. EK761 departs Dubai at 04.05, landing in Johannesburg at 10:15, with the return flight, EK762, departing Johannesburg at 13.25 and touching down in Dubai at 23.45, perfectly timed for onward connections to key destinations in the Far East, Europe and the Middle East.

Emirates is one of the world's biggest supporters of rugby. In South Africa, Emirates' investment in the sport is headlined by its steadfast title sponsorship of the Emirates Lions, including naming rights of the team's home stadium, Emirates Airline Park. The airline also sponsors the action-packed Cape Town Sevens, a regular fixture on the Sevens World Series calendar and one of the most popular live sporting events in South Africa, regularly drawing over 100,000 spectators.

Globally, Emirates can be found at the centre of the action from grassroots to professional leagues as the sponsor of Rugby World Cup since 2007, with prominent presence planned at the upcoming 2027 World Cup in Australia.

Firmly established as a long-term partner of South African aviation, tourism, and trade, Emirates has been serving the market for 29 years, connecting over 20 million travellers to/from South Africa with more than 140 destinations on its vast global network, via Dubai. The airline serves customers traveling to and from South Africa with 42 weekly flights to Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, with additional connectivity to regional points across the country offered by its codeshare and interline partners South African Airways, Airlink, Cemair, and FlySafair.

New Development Bank key to progress in developing countries

Location: News

New Development Bank key to progress in developing countries

Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana has called for visible thought leadership on how the New Development Bank (NDB) can play a more catalytic role in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in developing and emerging markets.

The SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

“The Bank must be unwavering in its commitment to the SDGs as it remains the most relevant benchmark for the development priorities of developing countries. Therefore, as we grow and strengthen the NDB as an institution, we must not lose sight of its developmental mandate.

“There is a need to address global challenges such as geopolitical challenges, which impacts multilateralism, escalating climate stresses, widening economic and social divides, and challenges we face at a national level.

“This includes poverty, inequality, and unemployment that continue to plague our societies,” Godongwana said on Friday. The Minister was addressing the NDB Annual meeting in Cape Town.

The Minister noted the significant progress that has been made by the Bank since being operational.

“[However], we must recognise that there is still much work to be done. As the 2030 Agenda draws near, increased momentum towards achieving the SDGs is imperative. This is a critical time for global development partners to come together and convey a strong message on the broad development agenda,” he said.

The Minister said progress on the SDGs will require targeted investment.

“Access to concessional development finance for developing countries is imperative to ensure accelerated progress in addressing development challenges and achieving inclusive growth that creates economic opportunities for all.

“In addition, there is a need for sizeable increases and greater stability in the flow of private capital investments. The NDB can play an essential role in mobilising private investment and ensuring it flows where it is needed most.

“The Bank must implement innovative financing instruments to crowd-in private sector participation. This should be accompanied by technology transfer and capacity building support as multidimensional enablers to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs, especially in key areas such as renewable energy, infrastructure development, digital access and job creation,” Godongwana said.

He said investment in infrastructure is central to the achievement of the development goals.

“Infrastructure is an enormous economic multiplier, providing dividends for an economy long after the infrastructure has been built. We believe that the NDB’s activities in developing and emerging markets will assist in addressing the large infrastructure financing gap that has been impeding economic growth and development, particularly in Africa.

“In this slow growth environment, where fiscal and monetary policy is limited, public and private role players need to collaborate to support growth.

“To this end, we look to the NDB to provide solutions aimed at de-risking infrastructure projects through its financial instruments to attract private capital,” the Minister said.

This will support infrastructure projects and provide technical assistance in designing innovative funding models and institutional arrangements that could accelerate infrastructure investments at a country-level.

“However, if the Bank is to continue advancing the interests of the developing world and address challenges such as renewable energy, infrastructure development, digital access and job creation then NDB must make a concerted effort to speed-up disbursements of approved projects.

“As more African countries become members of the NDB we believe that the Bank can play a very instrumental role in the provision of infrastructure and addressing its infrastructure deficit,” he said. -SAnews.gov.za

Lamola welcomes Norway’s support to help resolve SA’s triple challenges

Location: News

Lamola welcomes Norway’s support to help resolve SA’s triple challenges

South Africa’s triple challenges of unemployment, inequality, and poverty persist, and Norway’s ongoing support and cooperation to enable the country to resolve these pressing development issues is greatly appreciated.

This is according to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) Minister, Ronald Lamola who spoke during the opening remarks on the Working Visit of Norway Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.

Norway is one of the biggest investors in renewable energy in South Africa and is working towards delivering President Cyril Ramaphosa’s request for private-public partnerships to ensure economic growth and job creation through renewable energy.

“Our struggle for a better South Africa is intertwined with our pursuit of a better Africa in a better world. We welcome Norway’s commitment to collaborate with us as we forge ahead with efforts to promote peace and security on the continent and advance regional and continental integration,” the Minister said on Friday.

According to Lamola, South Africa also seeks partners to promote peace and reconstruction on the continent through various cooperation mechanisms, not in the form of aid but in a way that substantively enables Africa to leverage its rich endowment.

“In a manner which helps Africa live up to the aspiration, we sing about the African Union anthem, the clarion call to make Africa the tree of life.”

This morning’s discussions focused on bilateral trade including Norwegian investments in South Africa’s renewable energy sector, multilateral affairs, South Africa’s upcoming Presidency of the G20, and geopolitical developments, including peace and reconciliation efforts in South Sudan, Palestine and Ukraine.

“Our engagement today allows us to review the current state of our bilateral political and economic relations and unlock challenges and opportunities where they may exist.”

He said their talks also afford them valuable opportunities for reflection and an honest exchange of views to deepen common understanding of regional, multilateral, and global issues of mutual concern and interest.

“I do not doubt that today’s meeting’s outcome will revitalise bilateral relations between our two countries and build on the foundation laid in previous engagements.”

The Minister is of the view that Norway stands as a “beacon of unwavering friendship” to South Africans.

“It is among one of the few nations that extended a hand to host missions from the African National Congress during our most trying times under apartheid rule.”

He expressed his appreciation to the Scandinavian country for supporting South Africa’s liberation struggle from apartheid and said both countries were united by shared values of democracy, respect for human rights, and social justice.

“South Africa continues to make significant strides in reversing the historic injustices of apartheid.

“However, this remains a work in progress, as it has only been 30 years since we attained our democracy. We deeply value Norway’s contribution in this regard.”

He labelled multilateralism as being at the heart of the biggest issues facing the world currently.

These include promoting peace and security, trade, and human rights, ending hunger, preventing health epidemics, tackling climate change, and protecting the environment.

“We value our cooperation with Norway in multilateral fora and look forward to continued engagement between our countries.

“Strengthening our engagement on these issues goes beyond individual countries and cultures.”

He told Norway’s Foreign Minister that he hoped their continued collaboration through discussions would enhance and foster the constructive and fruitful relationship that both countries derive from our bilateral relationship. – SAnews.gov.za

Visa applicants to receive outcomes of visa waiver applications digitally

Location: News

Visa applicants to receive outcomes of visa waiver applications digitally

In an important first step towards the digital transformation of the Department of Home Affairs, Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber has instituted a new rule to deliver the outcomes of visa waiver applications digitally via email to applicants.

In the first phase of the rollout of this process, the outcome of waiver applications for holders of Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs) will be sent digitally, effective immediately.

Over time, the digital-first approach will be extended to other applicants in the visa and permit regime.

This means that applicants will no longer be required to visit a VFS Global office to collect physical, paper-based copies of the waiver letters.

Instead, starting from today with ZEP holders and later all, applicants will conveniently receive digital waiver letters, in PDF format, through email. These digital letters can be used to submit a mainstream visa application going forward.

“While this step on its own may be a small one, it is still meaningful as part of our larger quest to clamp down on corruption and to enhance efficiency of services by transforming Home Affairs into a digital-first department.

“This simple embrace of a digital-first approach to processing waivers has also significantly accelerated our work to clear the permitting backlog that dates back a decade, which started out at over 306 000 unprocessed applications.

“Through this change, we have been able to effectively process 60 582 outstanding ZEP waiver applications, many of which date back to 2022.

“Another 22 529 ZEP waiver applications are set to be processed soon, further reducing the backlog and freeing up valuable resources in a department that has been financially gutted to the point of only having 40% of the staff resources. This step illustrates our absolute determination to use technology to do more with the little we have,” the Minister said.

Applicants who still prefer to collect hardcopies of ZEP waiver letters at branches will still be able to do so.

The department said applicants should not be doubtful when they receive an outcome digitally via email from the following official addresses: No-reply1.dhasa@vfshelpline.com; No-reply2.dhasa@vfshelpline.com; No-reply3.dhasa@vfshelpline.com; No-reply4.dhasa@vfshelpline.com; No-reply5.dhasa@vfshelpline.com; No-reply6.dhasa@vfshelpline.com - SAnews.gov.za

Nzimande calls for urgent need to transform South Africa’s science landscape

Nzimande calls for urgent need to transform South Africa's science landscape

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Professor Blade Nzimande, has called on the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) to convene a summit to discuss transformation within South Africa’s national system of innovation (NSI).

Speaking in Pretoria at the launch of the 2024 Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Indicators Report, Nzimande said that the summit should bring together stakeholders to address the remaining barriers to achieving a fully transformed innovation system.

Despite the report highlighting increases in the numbers of women and Black academic staff at higher education institutions in South Africa, the Minister said there is still much room for improvement.

“We must recognise the ongoing challenges in transforming our STI landscape. We need to ensure that our NSI truly reflects the demographics of our nation, particularly in terms of race, class and gender,” he added.

According to the report, university enrolments in South Africa increased by 12% between 2012 and 2021, with a 41% rise in the number of graduates.

Black African academic staff representation rose to 43%, marking substantial progress in gender and racial equity.

Meanwhile, scientific publications increased from 3 693 in 2000 to 27 208 in 2022, securing a global share of one percent.

Diversity among authors has also improved significantly, with the percentage of women authors rising from 32% in 2005 to 45% in 2022, and contributions from black academics growing from under 15% to over 52%.

The Minister said the ongoing transformation of the NSI is about ensuring that the benefit of innovation is shared equitably across society.

This includes enhancing access to science and technology education for young people from working-class and poor backgrounds to ensure they can become future scientists and innovators.

However, he said the positive increases in university enrolments and graduates, coupled with the growing representation of women and Black African academic staff, were testament to government’s commitment to building a more equitable and inclusive scientific community.

The National Research Foundation, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last week, said that, among 4 212 rated researchers in South Africa, Black South Africans account for 38%.

Nzimande believes this was testimony to the commitment to transform the country’s research landscape.

The STI report, titled ‘Measuring science, technology and innovation to guide their contribution to socio-economic development’, highlights South Africa’s advancements and the challenges that remain.

Commissioned by NACI, the report provides data and insights that inform policy decisions by government, helping to shape strategies aimed at improving the country’s STI landscape.

The report reveals that South Africa invested R2.4 billion in national research infrastructure and R1.2 billion in the National Equipment Programme, strengthening research capabilities across the country.

The nation’s e-Government Development Index improved from 0.49 in 2012 to 0.74 in 2022, with its global ranking jumping from 101 to 65 out of 193 countries, reflecting significant progress in digital inclusion.

Manufacturing exports increased by 11.7% between 2021 and 2022, with medium and high technology (MHT) exports showing strong growth.

The sector saw a notable rise in patent filings and publications in emerging technologies, including digitalisation and nanotechnology, indicating a robust commitment to innovation.

The report identified ongoing challenges, including low research and development (R&D) intensity, declining international patent applications, and reduced venture capital investment.

South Africa’s patenting activity has declined significantly over the past few years.

Domestic patents granted decreased from 694 in 2019 to 513 in 2022, while patent applications abroad dropped from 1 457 in 2020 to 968 in 2022.

Additionally, patents granted by the European Patent Office decreased from 80 in 2020 to 38 in 2022.

However, there was a slight increase in patents granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office, from 125 in 2021 to 150 in 2022.

“As we move forward, it is imperative that we make targeted and sustainable policy, institutional, and resource interventions to address the challenges identified in the 2024 STI Indicators Report. Our goal is to place science, technology, and innovation at the core of South Africa's national development agenda, the Minister.

SA groundbreaking study transforms TB treatment policy globally

SA groundbreaking study transforms TB treatment policy globally

A groundbreaking initiative, BEAT-Tuberculosis, has become the world’s first programme in the battle against drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) for all population groups, influencing the international TB treatment policy of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The principal investigator leading this study, Dr Francesca Conradie, explained that the study’s success in demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of the new short oral regimen in these key populations marks a pivotal step toward a more comprehensive and equitable healthcare strategy for TB.

“The BEAT-Tuberculosis study represents a groundbreaking approach in the fight against tuberculosis, particularly with its inclusive research methodology.

“By incorporating pregnant women and children into the clinical trials, the study has expanded the understanding of TB treatment’s efficacy and safety across broader demographics,” said Conradie.

The primary aim was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a novel shortened treatment regimen for DR-TB compared with the established standard of care.

The standard treatment consisted of a regimen of seven drugs administered over a minimum of nine months, in comparison to a regimen of four to five medications, which included newer agents like bedaquiline and delamanid, and was administered over only six months.

The BEAT-Tuberculosis clinical study was conducted at the Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) Isango Lethemba TB Research Unit in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal over the past six years.

The study began in 2019 and despite the formidable challenges posed by COVID-19, over 400 participants were enrolled across study sites in both provinces.

The study’s other objective was to build research capacity for DR-TB in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, through community engagement and training healthcare personnel in clinical research methodologies for TB treatment.

“This collaborative effort received crucial support from the National and Provincial Departments of Health that provided essential medication and laboratory infrastructure for safety and efficacy assessments,” said Conradie.

The local research study was made possible by the collaboration of the National Department of Health, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and executed by the University of the Witwatersrand.

The results from the study have influenced the WHO policy on the treatment of TB, and at the same time put the Global South centre stage for driving improved treatment for all.

National Department of Health’s Chief Director of TB Control and Management, Professor Norbert Ndjeka, said that in 2022, an estimated 280 000 people developed TB in South Africa, while 54 000 died from the disease.

TB remains a threat to global public health and the second leading cause of death in South Africa.

“With this concerning observation in mind, we acknowledge the BEAT Tuberculosis project as an exemplary and concerted effort to advance TB treatment and research capabilities, poised to bring about transformative changes in RR-TB management worldwide.

“While the study was originally intended to inform local treatment guidelines, the results are now set to benefit patients everywhere.”

USAID Southern Africa Mission Director, Leslie Marbury, believes that the National Department of Health and his organisation have improved TB patient care worldwide.

Marbury said the organisation celebrates the 400 participants who made this trial possible and brought the world closer to ending TB.

“We also thank all BEAT Tuberculosis stakeholders, including the National Department of Health, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal Health Departments, and local medical facilities, for their dedication and commitment to this globally recognised study,” she added.

TB symptoms

The most common symptoms of TB are a cough that lasts more than two weeks, weight loss, drenching night sweats and a fever.

Anyone with these symptoms is urged to go to their local clinic.

“You will be asked to produce sputum or phlegm which will be tested for TB. If the test is positive, the correct treatment will be started.” – SAnews.go.za

AEW 2024 to Place Leadership at the Forefront of Africa’s Just Energy Future

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

As the global energy landscape shifts towards sustainability, Africa faces the unique challenge of balancing energy access, economic development and environmental stewardship. At African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy 2024, the Just Energy Leader Dialogue – sponsored by bp South Africa – will gather industry figures to explore how Africa's leaders can balance competing priorities and harness technology, policies and best practices to overcome energy access challenges.

The dialogue brings together key voices, including CEO of bp South Africa Taelo Mojapelo; Chief Investment Officer at the African Development Bank (AfDB) Wole Lawuyi; and Vice President and Country Manager, Senegal at Kosmos Energy, Khady Ndiaye. Moderated by Vice President at S&P Global, Michael Wynne, the session will explore how African leaders are navigating the complex intersection of social justice, economic growth and environmental sustainability in energy policymaking.

AEW: Invest in African Energy is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

African countries are leading the charge toward a just energy transition through a mix of enabling policy and investment promotion activities. Under its Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), South Africa has rolled out its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) outlining the country's strategy for energy diversification. The IRP provides for the accelerated adoption of renewable energy, while recognizing the continued role of coal and gas in national energy security. The DMRE has consistently advocated for a balanced energy approach, ensuring that the transition does not come at the expense of jobs and economic stability.

In Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced $585 billion in energy sector investment opportunities, aligning with the Nigerian Energy Transition plan, which focuses on increasing renewable energy, reducing methane emissions and achieving net-zero goals. Investments include $272 billion toward renewable power and infrastructure, $96 billion toward optimizing oil and gas processes, energy efficiency and carbon capture, $80 billion toward zero-emissions technologies and $2.8 billion toward clean cooking solutions. Nigeria will also host the $5-billion African Energy Bank, established by the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO) and African Export-Import Bank and set to accelerate access to capital for oil and gas projects across the continent. The initiative affirms Nigeria's leadership and commitment to ensuring energy security in Africa, as well as improving energy project financing.

Last month, APPO held discussions to help identify transition strategies, focusing on reducing gas flaring, enhancing local content and promoting research and development. Thought leaders like NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber and Chief Academic Officer of Maarifa Education Olubayi Olubayi, united to explore pathways to more sustainable energy practices across the continent.

In West Africa, Senegal is also prioritizing the simultaneous development of fossil fuel and renewable resources, striking a balance among other, single resource-centric economies.  The country is set to begin gas production from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG project later this year, creating opportunities in gas processing, gas-to-power and infrastructure and establishing itself as a key regional energy hub. In 2024, Senegal expanded its focus on renewable energy by launching new initiatives aimed at integrating renewables into its energy mix and aligning with its Just Energy Transition Partnership with France, Germany, the EU, the UK and Canada. High-level international cooperation supports Senegal's goal of universal energy access through a low-carbon energy mix and has established the country as a regional pioneer.
