Police launch manhunt for gang behind Hammanskraal ATM bombings
Police have launched a manhunt for a gang of about 30 men who allegedly bombed five ATMs at a shopping mall in Hammanskraal, Tshwane, over the weekend.
According to a statement issued by the police, the incident took place in the early hours of Sunday.
A security guard was conducting patrols outside the mall when he was allegedly accosted by the suspects, who were driving a bakkie.
"The suspects robbed him of his firearm and proceeded inside the shopping mall, where they robbed the second security officer of his cellphone. It is further alleged that the suspects then bombed the five ATMs and broke into one of the shops where they also bombed the drop safe,” the police said.
As suspects were leaving the shopping mall, they saw the police officers and started firing shots.
"A shootout ensued between the police, private security officers and the suspects. One of the security officers was shot and wounded. He was taken to the nearest medical care centre for treatment," the police said.
The police said no arrests have been made and authorities are still on the lookout for the suspects.
"It cannot be confirmed at this stage how much money was taken from the ATMs and the shop." – SAnews.gov.za

Hammaskraal water declared safe for consumption
Drinking water in Hammanskraal has been declared safe for consumption, following concerns over water quality in the area.
In response to the concerns raised in media reports, an urgent meeting was convened by Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister David Mahlobo, City of Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya, and Magalies Water. The meeting, held last Friday, addressed a temporary water supply disruption that caused brief turbidity in the drinking water.
“The meeting confirmed that the water is now safe to drink. It was agreed that officials from the City and Magalies Water would meet weekly to ensure proper coordination and timeous, and clear communication to the public regarding any water supply disruptions,” the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) said in a statement on Saturday.
The department confirmed that Magalies Water experienced a power failure at its Klipdrift Water Treatment Works on Tuesday, 4 February 2025, following a severe storm that damaged the mini-substation supplying electricity to the facility.
The storm caused severe damage to the substation, necessitating the procurement, installation, and commissioning of a new mini-substation.
Magalies Water successfully completed the installation and commissioning process by Saturday, 8 February 2025.
After the electricity supply was restored, the plant was promptly restarted, ensuring the resumption of normal water treatment operations.
Due to downtime of the water treatment plant caused by the damage to the electricity substation, the department noted that the reservoirs and reticulation system were empty and dry for a considerable amount of time.
The downtown affected a number of areas, including Mandela Village, Marokolong, Ramotse, Kekana Gardens (Steve Bikoville), Kudube Unit 9, Babelegi Industrial and Bridgeview informal settlement.
The department added that when the system was restarted on 8 February 2025, it took time to recover, and the City of Tshwane and Magalies Water had to conduct testing and flushing of the system to get air out of the supply pipelines.
Water quality in the system is monitored continuously.
However, on 11 February 2025, it was discovered that there was some turbidity in the water, which could have been caused by settled sediments due to the system been dry for a period of time.
The department said all other parameters, apart from turbidity, complied with the South African National Standards (SANS) 241:2015 drinking water quality standard.
“Subsequent tests and further flushing of the distribution system were conducted on 13 February, and the results indicated that there was no non-compliance on any water quality parameters. The water in the system continues to be compliant to SANS 241:2015 and safe for human consumption.
“Magalies Water’s highly advanced ISO/IEC [International Organisation for Standardisation and the International Electrotechnical Commission] 17025:2017 accredited Scientific Services Laboratory and its staff continuously monitor water quality in the system. Rigorous monitoring protocols are implemented and informed by a risk-based approach that adheres to regulatory frameworks,” the department explained.
The City of Tshwane and Magalies Water, supported by Water and Sanitation, will continue to take samples and assess water quality in Hammanskraal, and the City of Tshwane will also continue to provide updates to residents accordingly.
“Residents are advised to avoid relying on misinformation from social media, which is often unverified and to make use of official notifications published by the City of Tshwane,” the department said. -SAnews.gov.za

GCIS reaches out to Hammanskraal residents ahead of SONA

Officials from the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) have undertaken an awareness campaign in Hammanskraal, Gauteng, aimed at raising awareness on the State of the Nation Address (SONA) and services offered by the GCIS.
Held late last week at Kopanong Complex, the community outreach was supported by staff members from the GCIS Information Resource Centre (IRC), the Gauteng GCIS branch and those from the Office of the Public Protector.
The engagement was also an opportunity for the GCIS to spread the message of food safety, in light of recent incidents where young lives have been lost due to foodborne illnesses.
The GCIS plays a critical role in ensuring that South Africans have access to accurate and up-to-date government information. During the campaign, officials engaged with community members, highlighting the significance of the SONA, where the President will outline the government's priorities, policies, and plans for the year.
“By informing the public about the upcoming address, the initiative aimed to encourage greater civic participation and awareness of national developments that directly impact communities like Hammanskraal.
“The campaign placed a strong emphasis on food safety awareness. Given past concerns about foodborne illnesses and water safety in Hammanskraal, the initiative sought to educate residents on best practices for food handling, storage, and hygiene.
“Through informative discussions and distributed materials, the team provided valuable guidance on preventing food contamination, ensuring proper sanitation, and making healthier food choices to protect families from potential health risks.
“The campaign saw active participation from local residents, who welcomed the opportunity to engage with government representatives and community leaders. The presence of the Office of the Public Protector further reinforced government's commitment to transparency, accountability, and service delivery,” the GCIS said in a statement.
By bringing together the GCIS, local government representatives and public sector partners, the initiative successfully strengthened communication between government and the people, ensuring that essential information reaches those who need it most.
With the State of the Nation Address scheduled for 7pm tonight, such awareness initiatives remain vital in keeping citizens informed and engaged in the country's democratic processes.
The food safety awareness aspect of the campaign also plays a crucial role in improving public health and ensuring the well-being of communities.

City of Tshwane declares Hammanskraal water safe for consumption
The City of Tshwane Metro Municipality has announced that water supplied from the Magalies Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant to Hammanskraal is safe for consumption.
This comes after the completion of Phase 1 of the water treatment project.
The areas which fall under the first phase and have access to the clean water include Wards 49, 73, 74 and 75, which encompass Mandela Village, Marokolong, Ramotse, Kekana Gardens (also referred to as Steve Bikoville), and Babelegi Industrial.
The completion of Phase 1 of the project follows extensive testing conducted by the Department of Water and Sanitation, City of Tshwane, and Magalies Water, which confirmed that the water is now meeting all the required health standards for consumption.
In a statement posted on social media, X, on Wednesday, Tshwane Municipality Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, explained that “extensive testing” was done before laboratory tests confirmed that “the water now meets all the required health standards for consumption”.
This comes after a process of purging the reticulation system, which was previously supplied by Temba Water Works, using clean water sourced from the new Klipdrift Package Plant.
Moya noted that the purpose of the prolonged purging process and accompanying inspections was to ensure that the system is fully rehabilitated, disinfected and safe.
“The successful delivery of services to Hammanskraal forms part of long-term projects by the city and the national government to ensure that the quality of water provided to this community meets the constitutional obligations enjoyed by many citizens in the country,” Moya said.
Moya said the Magalies Water Klipdrift package project consists of “four phases estimated to be completed in mid-2025”.
“With the completion of each stage, more areas in Hammanskraal will benefit. This will be complemented by upgrades to Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) being conducted by the city. The combination of these two projects will allow communities to benefit from a reliable and clean water supply,” the Mayor said.
Rooiwal WWTP tender first stage of investigation completed
Meanwhile, Moya reported that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has this week confirmed that the first stage of its investigation into the Rooiwal WWTP tender has been completed.
She said this has resulted in criminal referrals to the National Prosecuting Authority and disciplinary referrals to the City of Tshwane.
“The mayoral executive welcomes the news of the completion of the first part of the investigation and is awaiting formal communication from the Special Investigating Unit to the city. We look forward to receiving the report and acting on its recommendations.
“Addressing the injustice of the failure to provide potable water to the residents of Hammanskraal must include consequence management for the failures and corruption of the initial project. The completion of the first part of the investigation by the Special Investigating Unit brings us one step closer to ensuring accountability,” Moya said.
The Mayor also acknowledged the residents of Hammanskraal for their patience and committed to addressing other challenges plaguing the area.
“We thank residents for their patience during the process of ensuring the safety of the water and will continue to work with Magalies Water and the Department of Water and Sanitation, to successfully deliver the future phases of the project,” Moya said.
For more than a decade, the community of Hammanskraal has suffered from a lack of clean, and constant water supply.
This led to the death of 32 people due to an outbreak of cholera in the area in 2023.
This prompted a visit to the area by President Cyril Ramaphosa, where he apologised to the residents. – SAnews.gov.za

Water and Sanitation updates on progress to deliver water to Hammanskraal residents
The Department of Water and Sanitation, the Gauteng Provincial Government, the City of Tshwane and Magalies Water are continuing to work together to address the water situation in Hammanskraal.
The department said this in a joint statement to update the public on progress to date to deliver water to the residents of Hammanskraal.
“The progress being made is a testament to the importance of effective cooperation between various spheres of government, working together to resolve service delivery challenges,” the department said.
In October 2024, Magalies Water, in collaboration with the City of Tshwane, successfully completed the first phase of the water treatment project, which comprises an advanced facility equipped with four package plants. This was a directive by the Minister of Water and Sanitation to ensure the supply of clean water to the Hammanskraal community.
“Thus far, significant efforts have been made in consistent pursuit to deliver potable water, including the flushing of the reticulation system, optimisation of the entire system and monitoring of the water quality. The main aim is to ensure that the water is compliant with the SANS [South African National Standards] 241 specifications,” the department said.
Phase one
The first phase of the project has been completed, meaning that at least 12.5 megalitres per day (ML/d) of treated water will be supplied to various regions in Hammanskraal.
These regions are situated within wards 49, 73, 74, and 75, specifically Mandela Village, Marokolong, Ramotse, Kekana Gardens (also referred to as Steve Bikoville) respectively, along with Babelegi Industrial.
“It is essential that we carefully explore balancing the need for uninterrupted water supply and system optimisation with the quest to fully restore the system and its integrity,” the department said.
Teams from Magalies Water and the City of Tshwane recently pursued the inspection and purging of the reticulation system, which was previously supplied by the Temba Water Works, using water sourced from the new Klipdrift Package Plant, with the aim of ensuring that the system is fully rehabilitated and disinfected.
This was followed by frequent monitoring of water quality in the reticulation network and the results show that there is significant improvement in the water quality.
In recognition of the diligent and thorough efforts made by all parties involved, the department said residents need to be aware of the significant progress that has been achieved since last week, following the initial release of water from the Klipdrift Package Plant.
The following milestones have been reached:
• The Klipdrift Package Plant continues to supply the City of Tshwane with projected volumes of approximately 12.5 ML/day.
• The water provided by the Klipdrift Package Plant meets the minimum standard requirements for drinking water in South Africa, as specified in SANS 241: 2015, as verified by a laboratory accredited by ISO/IEC 17025.
• The Babelegi Reservoir, which services the areas mentioned above, has consistently received and distributed water that complies with SANS 241:2015 at all relevant times.
From 23 December 2024 to date, the water in all the affected areas has been in full compliance with four critical indices outlined in SANS 241:2015, i.e. Acute Health I & II, Chronic Health, and Aesthetic. Currently, a limited number of areas are receiving focused attention due to operational challenges associated with turbidity (a measure of how cloudy or hazy a fluid is due to the presence of particles that are usually too small to see with the naked eye).
Based on the turbidity challenges, the department said Magalies Water and the City of Tshwane will continue to flush the system and monitor the water quality to clear the turbidity in the reticulation network.
This is aimed at ensuring that the water quality is compliant with SANS 241 specifications.
The department said a formal notification will be issued by the City of Tshwane in the near future after operational compliance targets have been achieved.
“Once the water supplied has been eliminated of turbidity, the City of Tshwane will issue a formal notification to the community that the water is safe for human consumption,” the department said.
The department further reminded all residents that South Africa is a water-scarce country.
“Let us use this precious resource sparingly and effectively implement water conservation initiatives. Each drop counts,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

Gauteng Traffic Police calls for caution on the roads
With hours to go before Christmas Day, Gauteng Traffic Police has urged motorists to remain vigilant and to be on the lookout for pedestrians wherever they travel.
This as Gauteng has since the beginning of the festive period, experienced several fatalities, with the majority being pedestrians.
“Most road crashes in our province are caused by human error, such as texting while driving, over speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, unsafe overtaking and lane changing, and driving too fast for specific conditions,” said spokesperson for the traffic police, Sello Maremane, on Tuesday.
The Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) are intensifying law enforcement operations this week and beyond Christmas Day to ensure the safety of all citizens during the busy festive period.
Traffic volumes are expected to surge as many holidaymakers travel to their respective destinations.
“In response, the department has strengthened enforcement measures to prioritise the safety of communities,” he said.
Routes that will be closely monitored due to the high number of pedestrian fatalities include:
• N1 Freeway Pretoria to Polokwane: Between Sefako Makgato and Hammanskraal off-ramps.
• R80 Mabopane Freeway: Between Rosslyn and Soshanguve offramps.
• N4 Freeway Pretoria to Mpumalanga: Between Watermeyer off-ramp and Solomon Mahlangu Drive.
• N1 South: From Freedom Park to Orange Farm.
• N12 West: Towards Westonaria.
• R21: From Olifantsfontein to Boksburg.
To deal with these challenges, the enforcement operations will include speed enforcement, anti-drunk driving operations, vehicle and driver fitness checks, road safety campaigns at one-stop centers, anti-crime operations in hotspot areas and anti-spiking operations.

License examiner held for bribing anti-corruption investigators
A 59-year-old license examiner at the Temba driving license testing centre in Hammanskraal has been arrested after allegedly bribing anti-corruption investigators.
The official was under investigation by the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s national traffic anti-corruption unit and the Hawks - following allegations that he was involved in corrupt practices involving the fraudulent issuing of driving licences at the centre.
“It is alleged that the official offered a R50 000 bribe to investigators to sweep the investigation under the carpet. An entrapment order was obtained, and the investigators proposed that the official should meet them at a nearby shopping mall.
“The official allegedly approached the investigators carrying a white bag. He allegedly placed the bag inside the vehicle the investigators were travelling in declaring that it was R50 000 divided into two stacks,” the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said on Friday.
He was immediately arrested and detained at Temba police station.

Deputy Ministers to inspect Lesotho Highlands Water Project
Water and Sanitation Deputy Ministers, David Mahlobo and Sello Seitlholo, together with Deputy Minister of Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation, Seiso Mohai, will today lead an inspection of the maintenance operation of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) tunnel in Clarens, Free State.
A joint maintenance operation by Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA) and the Lesotho Highlands Development Agency (LHDA) is currently underway, following a tunnel system closure on 1 October 2024.
TCTA is undertaking the maintenance operation on Delivery Tunnel North within South Africa, and LHDA will focus on the transfer tunnels at the Muela Hydro power station in Lesotho.
“Following a de-watering process of the tunnel, technical inspections have been conducted and the repair work inside the tunnel resumed and will take place until 28 February 2025. The tunnel will remain closed for six months and will be operational again next year in March,” the Department of Water and Sanitation said ahead of Friday’s tour.

During the inspection of the maintenance tunnel, the Deputy Ministers will take members of the media to different sites of the tunnel, including Little Caledon Tunnel and Ash River Outfall.
The Deputy Ministers will be accompanied by the Executive Mayors of theThabo Mofutsanyana and Fezile Dabi District Municipalities, and Setsoto, Mafube, Mantsopa and Nketoane Local Municipalities.
Klipdrift Package Plant
Meanwhile, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure access to safe drinking water and uninterrupted water supply to the people of Hammanskraal, in Gauteng, DWS Minister, Pemmy Majodina, will on Saturday unveil phase 1 of the Klipdrift Package Plant.

The launch follows the Ministerial visit that took place in August, where the Ministry of Water and Sanitation received an update report on the work done on the Klipdrift potable Water Treatment Works Project.

Ministerial Spokesperson, Cornelius Monama highlighted that in order to improve water provision to residents of Hammanskraal, the department last year allocated R758 million for the upgrading of the 40 megalitres (ml/d) per day Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant to provide additional water into the existing bulk water infrastructure.
Monama said the additional 50 ml/d will bring the total capacity to 92 ml/d after completion.
He acknowledged that the Hammanskraal community has experienced continuous water supply challenges which necessitated intervention by the DWS.
Monama explained that the potable water treatment plant is being implemented in four phases, and the current completed phase will bring in 12.5 megalitres of potable water into the bulk supply scheme.
“The first package plant will supply water to parts of Mandela Village, Marokolong, Ramotse, Kekana Gardens, Kudube Unit 9 and Babelegi Industrial and Bridgeview informal settlement. The next phases of the project will continue into 2025,” Monama said.
The Minister, accompanied by Deputy Ministers, Mahlobo and Seitlholo, will unveil the first package plant at Klipdrift Package Plant in Mandela Village, Hammankraal, north of Pretoria. – SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet updated on SA’s water challenges
Government has urged the residents of Hammanskraal in Gauteng to exercise patience while work is underway to install a new water treatment plant at the Klipdrift Water Treatment Works.
The call was made by Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, during a post-Cabinet media briefing held in Cape Town on Wednesday.
“In 2023, the Ministry of Water and Sanitation directed Magalies Water to urgently intervene in terms of the Water Services Act, 1997 (Act 108 of 1997) and to design and install a new water-treatment plant at its Klipdrift Water Treatment Works near Hammanskraal.
“This will help ease the water challenges and provide long-term solutions. This additional water treatment plant will supply water to certain reservoirs in the city’s water distribution system to increase the supply of clean drinking water to Hammanskraal.
“Government urges the people of Hammanskraal and surrounding areas to be patient while this work is underway. The first phase is expected to be completed by 15 November 2024. This will allow the City of Tshwane to deliver potable water to some areas of Hammanskraal,” she said.
Ntshavheni acknowledged that the water challenges facing the community continue to negatively affect the lives of the people, including the provision of healthcare services at local facilities such as the Jubilee Hospital.
She moved to assure residents that Cabinet had received and considered a report from the Water and Sanitation Department on Hammanskraal.
“The City of Tshwane is currently implementing a R278 million project to repair the previously dysfunctional Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW).
“It is expected that increasing the capacity of the Rooiwal WWTW will cost about R2 billion. Cabinet was informed that the City of Tshwane will have to fund this project through revenue, borrowing or its Urban Settlements Development Grant allocations from the Department of Human Settlements,” she said.
Water restrictions
Meanwhile, the Minister said Cabinet was given an update on the level 1 water restrictions in Johannesburg which are due to begin on Thursday.
The restrictions were announced earlier this week and will see water supply throttled from 9am to 4pm daily.

“Cabinet was appraised of the level 1 water restrictions that are in place in Gauteng due to continued water demand as a result of high consumption caused by population growth, illegal connections, leaks and [the] misuse of water.
“The average consumption in Gauteng is 279 litres per capita per day compared to the international average of 173 litres per capita per day. Whilst the metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng have level 1 water restrictions in place, very little enforcement is undertaken by the municipalities.
“The Minister of Water and Sanitation and the Premier of Gauteng have requested the municipalities to impose level 2 water restrictions which will come with fines if consumers do not adhere to the restrictions,” Ntshavheni said.
She added that a National Water Crisis Committee is in the works to bolster water-related work nationally.
“Cabinet supported the decision by the President to augment the work that is currently spearheaded by the Deputy President [Paul Mashatile] by elevating the water matters as a crisis and establish a National Water Crisis committee that will develop a water action plan and bring in water experts in order to intervene to the nation-wide water challenges in the local government space,” she said.
Municipal water debt
Ntshavheni warned that the R23 billion collectively owed by municipalities to water boards was rising and unsustainable
She said Cabinet had been appraised on this debt.
“The debt threatens the financial viability of the water boards and the entire water sector. Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina, recently met with several of the affected municipalities and received commitments to pay from most non-paying municipalities.

Riverlands dam owner directed to decommission failed dams
The Department of Water and Sanitation has issued a directive to the current owner of the Riverlands dams to safely decommission the failed dams.
Reflecting on the Ministry’s performance during its first 100 days in office at a media briefing held in Pretoria on Tuesday, Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodima, said a series of inter-linked, privately-owned dams failed on a farm near the town of Riverlands in the Swartland Local Municipality, Western Cape--during the 100 days--causing extensive damage to municipal infrastructure and houses in the town.
She said the Ministry visited the site of the dam failures, met with the community, and oversaw an investigation into the failures.
“The preliminary investigation report found that the original owner of the farm who built the dams failed to obtain the legally required approval from the department for the design of the dams, and that subsequent owners failed to register the dams with the department as required by the National Water Act.
“As a result, the dams were not regularly inspected, and signs of imminent failure were not identified timeously. Following the release of the investigation report, the department issued a directive to the current owner of the dams to safely decommission the failed dams,” Majodina said.
She said that further investigations are underway to determine liability for the damages caused by the dam failures.

The incident, which occurred on 08 August 2024, saw the failure of three farm dams that breached, resulting in flooding which caused severe property and infrastructure damage to the affected area, leading to hundreds of people being provided with humanitarian assistance.
Jagersfontein Tailing Dam report submitted to NPA
Majodina also reported that the report into the Jaggersfontein Tailing Dam in the Free State has been submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) following the laying of criminal charges against the dam owners by the department in 2022.
During the 100 days, the department completed its comprehensive technical investigation into the 2022 failure of the Jagersfontein Tailings Dam, which resulted in three deaths and one person declared as missing, as well as extensive damage to public and private property.
“The report has been submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority following the laying of criminal charges against the dam owners by the department during 2022.
“During the 100 days, a Request for Expressions of Interest issued by the department for proposals to develop tourism and recreation related to the department’s dams was finalised and the 300 applications which were received are currently being processed,” Majodina said.

Launch of phase one of Hammanskraal water project
Meanwhile, Majodina said the department will launch Phase One of the Hammanskraal water project on Saturday, 16 November 2024.
The project includes the provision of an additional 12.5 megalitres of water.
The Ministry visited Hammanskraal on 24 August 2024 to oversee a R750 million project which the department is implementing through the Magalies Water Board to enable the provision of clean drinking water.
“The project involves the construction of additional water treatment capacity at the Magalies Water Treatment Works near Hammanskraal. The Ministry also carried out a site inspection of the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Works to review the progress of the municipality’s project to refurbish the works,” Majodina explained.
Special purpose vehicle
The Minister further reported that a Special Purpose Vehicle by the Rand Water Board and the Emfuleni Local Municipality is in the process of being established.
This follows an oversight visit by the department to Emfuleni Local Municipality in Gauteng on 25 August 2024, where the department, through Rand Water, is implementing a R7.5 billion intervention in terms of Section 63 of the Water Services Act to address sewage pollution from the municipality’s waste water treatment systems.
As a result of the intervention, a number and frequency of sewage spillages into the streets and peoples’ homes has been significantly reduced.
She said work is underway to completely eradicate sewage pollution in the municipality.
“A Special Purpose Vehicle by the Rand Water Board and the Emfuleni Local Municipality is in the process of being established. It will be launched once all the legal requirements have been fulfilled which include the approval by the National Treasury.” – SAnews.gov.za

Department rebukes rape culture targeting teenagers
The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities has urged communities to report cases of abuse of women, youth and people with disabilities to their nearest police stations.
The department reiterated the call following the disturbing number of rape cases that are being reported at different police stations across the country.
According to recent crime statistics, between April and June this year, a total of 9 309 rape cases and 6 198 murder cases were registered.
“These statistics call upon society to be on high alert over the growing incidences of rape and murder of young girls and children in South Africa,” department spokesperson, Cassius Selala, said.
At the weekend a 16-year-old girl in Madikana village, in Limpopo and a 19-year-old girl in Hammanskraal, in Tshwane were found murdered.
“Women's rights are fundamental human rights, which include the right to be free from violence and discrimination. Government has put in place systems, such as the Constitution and legislation, aimed at fighting crime in our country.
“Advocacy for women's rights and gender mainstreaming are both important strategies for achieving gender equality and social justice through solid partnerships with communities, NGOs and community policing forums, as well as faith-based organisations,” Selala said.
Selala emphasised a need to join hands in defending and protecting the rights of all South Africans, particularly women and children. – SAnews.gov.za

Majodina to visit Gauteng water projects
Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina, joined by Deputy Minister Sello Seitlholo, will this weekend conduct an oversight visit to water projects in areas that are experiencing challenges due to inadequate infrastructure.
The visit to Hammanskraal and Emfuleni, from 24 – 25 August, forms part of ongoing efforts by the ministry to ensure acceleration of water and sanitation projects, especially in areas experiencing water challenges.
Hammanskraal has been experiencing water quality challenges. The department, through its entity Magalies Water, intervened and initiated the Klipdrift Package Plant to treat 50 megalitres per day, which go to the Temba Water Treatment Works.
Magalies Water is also upgrading the Klipdrift Water Treatment Works from 42 to 92 megalitres per day, while work is being done to refurbish the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Works.
Majodina will visit the Klipdrift Package Plant on 24 August to get a progress report on its construction and when it will start operating.
This will be followed by a site visit to the Babelegi Reservoir, as well as the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant.
“The following day [25 August], Majodina will assess the state of water and sanitation in Emfuleni Local Municipality and visit the Leeuikuil Waste Water Treatment Works, and have an engagement with Rand Water on their intervention work in the area,” the department said.
The inspections come as the Department of Water and Sanitation, through its entities, Magalies Water and Rand Water, alongside the City of Tshwane and Emfuleni Local Municipality, are working collaboratively to effectively address water challenges that are affecting these areas. – SAnews.gov.za

Mpox outbreak remains under control, says Health
The Department of Health has reassured South Africa that the current Monkeypox, or Mpox, disease outbreak remains under control.
This is despite several suspected cases reported across the country due to heightened awareness and surveillance activities, the department said on Thursday.
The Gauteng Department of Education retracted a statement this morning after it said a case of the infectious disease was reported at a Hammanskraal school in Gauteng.
The provincial department admitted that it may have “acted prematurely” in confirming the case without verification from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and apologised for the confusion.
According to the Department of Health, there have been 22 positive cases reported since May of this year. This includes 16 recoveries, three deaths and three active cases.
“Thus, the department would like to urge people who experience suspected Mpox symptoms, with or without international travel history, to present themselves to a health facility for clinical observation, confine themselves to one place and avoid gatherings until their laboratory test results are available,” a statement read.
The department said suspected cases are treated with confidentiality during contact tracing and case investigation.
“However, the department will always strike a balance between the privacy of individuals and letting them know they may be at risk of infection for the benefit of public health.”
The department urged all identified and suspected contacts to cooperate with health officials during contact tracing for screening and possible diagnosis to prevent further transmission of the preventable and treatable disease.
Some of the common symptoms of Mpox include a rash, which may last for two to four weeks, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen glands.
