Merck Foundation (www.Merck-Foundation.com), the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, in partnership with the First Ladies of Africa, proudly announced the Winners of their Merck Foundation Africa Media Recognition Awards 2024 under the categories “More Than a Mother” and “Diabetes and Hypertension”. 

The Awards Ceremony was conducted virtually to honor and celebrate the outstanding contributions of all the winning media professionals. The winners were warmly acknowledged by Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and President of the “More Than a Mother” campaign. 

Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej expressed, “I am truly happy to announce the winners of our Media Awards, together with my dear sisters, The First Ladies of Africa, who are also the Ambassadors of the Merck Foundation ‘More Than a Mother' Campaign. This year, we are delighted to celebrate 125 outstanding winners from 36 countries. It brings me joy to see such impressive participation not only from across Africa but also from several Asian and Latin American countries. Congratulations to all our incredible winners! 

It is a true pleasure to welcome you all as Merck Foundation Alumni. Let's continue to work together to raise awareness about critical social and health challenges, be the voice of the voiceless, and create culture shift in our communities.” 

Merck Foundation Media Awards launched in 2017, are announced annually, with over 640 Winners from 52 countries celebrated to date. 

The theme of the “More Than a Mother” Media Awards is to raise awareness about important social issues like: Breaking Infertility Stigma, Supporting Girl Education, Women Empowerment, Ending Child Marriage, Ending Female Genital Mutilation and/or Stopping Gender-Based Violence. The theme of the “Diabetes and Hypertension” Media Awards is to Promote a Healthy Lifestyle and raise awareness about prevention and early detection of Diabetes and Hypertension.  

The Merck Foundation CEO also launched the Call for Applications for the 2025 Media Awards. “I am pleased to invite entries for the Merck Foundation Media Recognition Awards 2025 – “More Than a Mother” & “Diabetes and Hypertension”, in partnership with the African First Ladies. I look forward to receiving another outstanding round of impactful entries this year as well.” Said Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej.

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) today announced that 156 players from a record 28 countries across five continents will compete in the league's milestone fifth season, which will tip off on Saturday, April 5 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, Morocco.* 

In the season opener, 2023 third-place finisher Stade Malien (Mali) will face 2024 third-place finisher Rivers Hoopers (Nigeria) at 4:00 p.m. GMT. In the second game, home team Fath Union Sport (FUS; Morocco) will take on first-time BAL participant Al Ittihad (Egypt) at 7:00 p.m. GMT.  The complete season schedule is available at BAL.NBA.com/schedule. 

The 2025 BAL season will reach fans in 214 countries and territories in 17 languages through free-to-air and paid TV broadcast partnerships with the African Union of Broadcasting, American Forces Network (AFN), Canal+, ESPN, FIBA's digital platform Courtside 1891, NBA TV, Ninety Media Services, SNRT, Tencent Sports, TV5 Monde and livestreaming on the NBA App (https://apo-opa.co/4lg5uVc), www.NBA.com, https://BAL.NBA.com and the BAL's YouTube Channel (https://apo-opa.co/3Eie70G).

The BAL also today announced that the league will honor NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo throughout the season, including by featuring a “DM55” patch on all player jerseys and select warm-up gear, as well as moments of silence ahead of each conference group phase.  The late four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer served as the NBA's first global ambassador following his retirement in 2009. 

Single-game tickets for the games in Rabat are available online at Guichet.com and BAL.NBA.com.  Fans who purchase tickets will also have free access to the BAL Fan Zone at the arena.   

During the 2025 BAL season, each four-team conference will play a 12-game group phase during which each team will face the other three teams in its conference twice. During group phase play, every team will play on every gameday.  The Kalahari Conference group phase will take place from April 5 – Sunday, April 13 in Rabat. The Sahara Conference group phase will take place from Saturday, April 26 – Sunday, May 4 at the Dakar Arena in Senegal. The Nile Conference group phase will take place from Saturday, May 17 – Sunday, May 25 at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda. Eight teams from across the three conferences will travel to Pretoria, South Africa for four seeding games followed by an eight-game, single-elimination playoffs and finals from Friday, June 6 – Saturday, June 14.

This year, we honor Six Winners in two categories: ‘Best African Women Researchers Awards' and ‘Best African Young Researchers Awards.'  

These awards celebrate their significant contributions to research, particularly highlighting the efforts of African women researchers, who remain underrepresented in this field. President Ramaphosa pays heartfelt tribute to nurses for their role during COVID

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed gratitude for the vital role nurses played during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The President addressed the 9th National Congress of the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) today. This was the first time the President addressed DENOSA since the outbreak, highlighting the lasting impact of healthcare workers in the fight against the virus.

President Ramaphosa reflected on the significant changes caused by the pandemic, including the loss of lives and the challenges encountered by healthcare workers.

“We lost a number of nurses and healthcare workers, brave men and women who were at the frontline of the pandemic. Brave is not an adequate word to describe them. Many of you faced the danger of being infected and death, but you still went on to care for those who were affected.”

He encouraged attendees to observe a moment of silence in honor of the brave nurses and healthcare professionals, who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving on the front lines.

“For you who are in the profession, nursing is a calling. It requires a strength of character and commitment to service that is rare.” 

The President highlighted the long history of struggle for equity in the nursing profession, particularly among black nurses during apartheid, who fought tirelessly for their rights amid systemic inequalities.

“Black nurses were expected to only care for black patients in black-only hospitals. The hospitals and clinics assigned to serve the country’s majority were under resourced and chronically underfunded. 

“Black nurses had unfavourable working conditions, were paid less than their white counterparts, and had fewer opportunities for advancement.” 

He reiterated his statements made during this year’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), that government will allocate resources to the health sector, build hospitals and clinics, and strengthen the healthcare system.

“This is the commitment that we’re going to achieve, and this is what we’re going to do.” 

The President also took the time to commend DENOSA for its nearly three decades of advocacy and service, and emphasised the organisation’s pivotal role in shaping nursing policy in South Africa. 

“We all appreciate the difficult balance that must be struck between advocacy and activism, on the one hand, and fulfilling the rights of patients to treatment and care, on the other hand,” he said.

President Ramaphosa outlined key strategic priorities for the next five years, including driving inclusive growth, reducing poverty, and building a capable, ethical developmental State. 

He underscored the integral role of nurses in achieving these goals, particularly in contributing to a capable State.

Meanwhile, despite a recent uptick in nursing registrations, he raised concerns about declining training numbers due in part to accreditation delays. 

President Ramaphosa urged DENOSA to engage proactively in policy development to ensure that the nursing profession evolves alongside the changing landscape of healthcare.

“In an environment where South Africa has a shortage of nurses, we are encouraged that the issue of South African nurses being recruited in large numbers by other countries is also on the agenda.”

Meanwhile, he said the support of DENOSA will be pivotal as the country prepares for the National Health Insurance (NHI).  

He is of the view that the NHI will bring the country closer to its aspiration of being a society where the human dignity of all is upheld at all times. 

“The right to dignity matters most when people are sick and need help, and when they are most vulnerable. Our nurses will be the backbone of the NHI.”

He urged the union to be at the forefront of discussions around skilling and training, health systems strengthening, and other crucial matters. 

The President called on the union to continue its leadership in advocating for nursing, while addressing the broader health needs of communities. 

“I’d like to thank you all once again for being frontline soldiers of our people’s health... you... are the ones who take your heart and full dedication to serving the people of South Africa, and we’re eternally grateful for that,” he added. – SAnews.gov.za

Merck Foundation (www.Merck-Foundation.com), the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, announced the Winners of Merck Foundation Africa Research Summit (MARS) Awards 2024, in partnership with International Federation of Fertility Societies -IFFS, Africa Reproductive Care Society - ARCS, Manipal University and African Union Scientific Technical Research Commission to recognize African Researchers for their valuable research work and contribution to empowering women and youth in STEM in Africa with special focus on ‘The Role of Scientific Research in Women Health and Reproductive Care'.

Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and Chairperson of Merck Foundation Africa Research Summit - MARS expressed, “Since 2016, I have taken immense pride in recognizing the achievements of our MARS Awards winners. This year, we honor Six Winners in two categories: ‘Best African Women Researchers Awards' and ‘Best African Young Researchers Awards.'

These awards celebrate their significant contributions to research, particularly highlighting the efforts of African women researchers, who remain underrepresented in this field. Through the MARS Awards, our mission is to empower young researchers in Africa and to specifically encourage and support women researchers by enhancing their research capabilities and promoting their vital roles in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).”

The winners of ‘Best African Women Researchers Awards' and ‘Best Young African Researcher Awards' will be enrolled into research training at a premier research institute in India.

“And I am also very happy to share with you all that as promised, we provided an opportunity to our first-place winner of each category to attend the 11th Edition of Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary which was recently conducted in Tanzania, however, only Mr. Jules Irenge Mongane was able to attend it”, shared Senator Rasha Kelej.

High Commission of Sri Lanka in Pretoria Celebrates 77th Independence Day

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Pretoria commemorated the 77th anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka on 08 February 2025. The event, held at the High Commission premises, was attended by approximately 150 Sri Lankans from South Africa and other accredited countries including Lesotho, along with South African friends of Sri Lanka and well-wishers.

The program commenced with the singing of the Sri Lankan National Anthem, followed by the National Anthem of the Republic of South Africa. A two-minute silence was observed in honor of those who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

Religious observances representing Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and Christian faiths were conducted to invoke blessings for peace and prosperity in Sri Lanka. These observances were led by Suratsawadi Mart, representing the Johannesburg Buddhist Temple; Guru Ratnasabapathy Vengatraman from the Adhi Lingeswarar Hindu Temple in Benoni; Moulana Obeidullah Bhoja  from Jamiatul Ulama, South Africa and Pastor Keshia Van Rooyen from the Christian Revival Church in Johannesburg. Symbolizing the passing of Sri Lankan traditional values to the next generation, an open invitation was extended to children and young Sri Lankans present at the event to take part in lighting of the traditional oil lamp.

During the welcome remarks, the Independence Day theme for this year, “Towards a National Renaissance,” along with other key national policies such as “Thriving Nation – Beautiful Life”, “Clean Sri Lanka”, alleviation of rural poverty, and implementing a digital economy were explained to the gathering. In particular, the recently launched digital platforms and the benefits of the e-BMD system were introduced to the Sri Lankan community in South Africa.

Following the welcome remarks, the Independence Day messages of the President, the Prime Minister, and the  Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism of Sri Lanka were read out  by the members of the staff of the High Commission. Promotional materials were also shared with the attendees.

All attendees were served with traditional Sri Lankan cuisine and Ceylon tea.

President Cyril Ramaphosa on the Recent Developments in the Eastern DRC and Deaths of SA Soldiers

Fellow South Africans, 

Following the recent intensification of fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Africa has lost 13 brave soldiers who were dedicated to their mission and committed to peace. The fighting is the result of an escalation by the rebel group, M23 and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) militia engaging the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and attacking peacekeepers from the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC).

On behalf of the Government and the people of our country, I express our sincerest condolences to their families, their loved ones and colleagues. We bow our heads in honor of their heroic and gallant fight for peace. 

We honour and mourn them.

All necessary support is being provided to the families of the deceased and the families of the injured. The process to repatriate the remains of the deceased is underway. 

The attacks on peacekeepers resulted in the deaths of SAMIDRC members from other troop contributing countries, namely; Malawi and Tanzania, as well members of the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) brigade. We honour all the lives that were lost and pass our condolences to their families, governments and citizens. The situation in Goma and Sake, where our troops and their counterparts are stationed, remains very tense, volatile and unpredictable. 

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga and the Chief of the SANDF, Gen Rudzani Maphwanya and SAMIDRC Force Commander, Maj Gen Monwabisi Dyakopu are working to ensure that the SAMIDRC forces remain well equipped and sufficiently supported during this critical mission. 

We are concerned about the speculation about the state of our troops and the battle conditions. All South Africans must rally behind our brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to bringing peace in our continent. 

South Africa's military presence in the eastern DRC is not a declaration of war against any country or state. The members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) that are in the DRC are part of both SADC and United Nations (UN) efforts to bring peace and protect thousands of lives that are constantly threatened by the conflict in the DRC. The presence of the SAMIDRC forces demonstrates a commitment of SADC member states to supporting the DRC in its efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability and ultimately, create an enabling environment for sustainable development and prosperity. 

We welcome the position that was recently adopted by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) during its special sitting on the situation in the DRC, which calls for an immediate end to hostilities, the reversal of territorial expansion by the M23, the exit of external forces from the DRC and the resumption of peace talks under the Nairobi Process. 

The territorial integrity of the DRC must be respected in accordance with the United Nations Charter on the respect of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of other states. 

We call on all parties to this conflict to fully embrace the current diplomatic efforts that are aimed at finding a peaceful resolution, including honoring the Luanda Process agreements. We must silence the guns on our continent for the attainment of inclusive development and prosperity.

Matric results day brings joy and celebration across South Africa

There was a hive of activity at schools across the country this morning as matriculants eagerly returned to collect their examination results. 

The air was filled with excitement, nervous anticipation and bursts of joy, as learners celebrated the culmination of 12 years of hard work.

Many schools held special celebrations to honor the Class of 2024, applauding their resilience and dedication. Teachers and principals were on hand to congratulate the learners, and many students took the opportunity to express their heartfelt gratitude to their educators for their unwavering support and guidance.

One standout achiever in the 2024 matric cohort is South African teenage sprinting sensation, Bayanda Walaza. The Olympic silver medalist capped off an extraordinary 2024 by crossing the matric finish line with flying colors. 

Walaza achieved a Bachelor pass with exemption and secured a distinction, marking yet another milestone in a year that also saw him clinch an Olympic silver medal and the title of Junior World Champion.

Reflecting on his achievement, Walaza admitted to feeling a mix of nerves and excitement as he opened his results. 

“It was scary to open the envelope, but I’m really impressed with how I did,” he said.

He said the results have inspired him to push himself to be better both on and off the track.

Walaza, who plans to study Logistics, has shown that balancing academics and sports at the highest level is possible with determination and hard work. 

His story is a shining example of the potential within South Africa’s youth and a source of inspiration for many.

Across the nation, the Class of 2024 is celebrating excellence and new beginnings. From heartfelt reunions with teachers to sharing dreams of the future with family and friends, the day marks a significant milestone in the lives of South Africa’s young achievers.

The Class of 2024 achieved an unprecedented achievement that bears testimony to learners’ personal commitment and advances in the basic education sector.

The national pass rate for the National Senior Certificate increased from 82.9% in 2023 to 87.3% last year, which is the highest ever in the country’s history. – SAnews.gov.za

SA, Angola deepen ties

SA, Angola deepen ties

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed South Africa's commitment to strengthening its partnership with Angola, focusing on shared economic growth, continental integration and sustainable development.

Addressing a media briefing during the Angola State Visit on Thursday, President Ramaphosa said South Africa is keen to see more Angolan investors enter the South African economy. 

“South Africa looks forward to deepening its ties with Angola in the cause of mutually beneficial growth, continental economic integration and sustainable development,” the President said. 

President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of the Republic of Angola is in South Africa for a State Visit at the Union Buildings in Tshwane. 

President Ramaphosa conferred the Order of South Africa on President Lourenço, meaning he shall henceforth be honored as an esteemed member of the country’s National Orders. 

“The people of South Africa collectively salute President Lourenço on being conferred with this very high honor of the order of South Africa. I congratulate you for being honored in this manner by South Africa,” President Ramaphosa said. 

The two Heads of State will address a Business Forum later today. President Ramaphosa said this serves as a chance to connect Angolan and South African businesses and they look forward to participating.

“For our part as governments, we will be expanding on the structural economic reforms underway in both countries to improve the investment climate and business operating environment,” President Ramaphosa said. 

With respect to bilateral cooperation, President Ramaphosa said the two countries agreed on an audit of existing agreements and Memoranda of Understanding. 

“Since formal diplomatic relations were established between Angola and South Africa, we have signed more than 44 agreements. They are at varying stages of implementation. This stock-take is necessary in the interests of strengthening the strategic partnership going forward,” the President said. 

With respect to collaboration on peace and security in the region and across Africa, President Ramaphosa commended President Lourenço for his efforts in mediating between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, as President of the International Conference on the Great Lakes, and as Facilitator of the Luanda Process. 

The President said that South Africa and Angola are deeply troubled by the deteriorating situation in Sudan and the ensuing humanitarian crisis. 

President Lourenço serves on the AU Presidential Ad-Hoc Committee for the Republic of Sudan. 

“South Africa pledges its full support for all efforts to bring about an end to the conflict in Sudan. We are equally concerned at the post-electoral crisis in Mozambique and have agreed to work together to enable our region to better respond to peace and security challenges in Africa,” the President said. 

President Ramaphosa further congratulated President Lourenço on his re-election, highlighting that this has been a year of major elections across the continent, including in Angola and South Africa.

“We have a shared sense of optimism regarding the state of multiparty democracy in Africa, which has proven to be robust and in good health.

“We have commended SADC for supporting these democratic processes through election observer missions, as well as for providing valuable recommendations on electoral processes going forward,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

“This trip was a celebration of the enduring bonds between Atlanta and South Africa, built on shared histories and common goals,” said Mayor Dickens.  “Atlanta Phambili embodies our joint vision for progress and collaboration, creating opportunities for both our citizens and economies.”

The visit followed the launch of Atlanta Phambili in March 2024 with a trade and investment roadshow hosted in Atlanta, featuring senior South African business executives and government officials.

The South African government, in partnership with Standard Bank, BrandSA, Amazon, and the American Chamber of Commerce in South Africa, hosted a robust program focused on trade and investment, science and innovation, and the creative economy.  This was led by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC), the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC), the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the Gauteng and Western Cape provincial governments, and the cities of Johannesburg and Cape Town.

“The South African government's partnership on the Atlanta Phambili initiative is a testament to the strength of our bilateral ties and the shared potential of our cities to drive innovation, inclusion, and prosperity,” said U.S. Ambassador to South Africa Reuben Brigety, II.

Atlanta Phambili Pledge

The visit kicked off with the unveiling of the Atlanta Phambili Pledge on December 5 at the Standard Bank Trade and Investment Seminar in Johannesburg.  This open call to action seeks to mobilize stakeholders across both nations to deepen collaboration in trade, investment, and entrepreneurship.  The pledge reflects Atlanta's and South Africa's shared commitment to fostering inclusive economic growth and creating opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Go Global Trade Expo: Strengthening Black-Owned Business Connections
On December 5, Ambassador Brigety announced a collaboration between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Atlanta Black Chambers to support the Chambers' Go Global Trade Expo.  The program will bring a delegation of Black-owned South African businesses to Atlanta in 2025, connecting them with the Chamber's extensive network and U.S. buyers.

Through this agreement, export-ready businesses will build connections with Atlanta-based platforms to foster trade and investment between South Africa and the United States.

FAME Week Africa 2025: Atlanta Announced as the Feature Destination
On December 9 in Cape Town, Mayor Dickens announced Atlanta will be the Feature Destination for FAME Week Africa 2025, the continent's premier gathering for professionals in film, television, music, fashion, and animation.  This recognition highlights Atlanta's emergence as a global creative hub and its strong historic and Diaspora ties to Africa.

“Atlanta being recognized as the Feature Destination for FAME Week 2025 is an excellent fit,” said Mayor Dickens.  “Our city is uniquely poised to satisfy the growing demand in the United States for African content and support production innovations.”

This honor also grants Atlanta a dedicated pavilion and events at FAME Week 2025, scheduled to take place in Cape Town from September 1-6, 2025.

Business-to-Business Engagements in Johannesburg and Cape Town

  • Standard Bank Trade and Investment Seminar:  This December 5 event convened leading South African and Atlanta-based companies, government officials, and entrepreneurs to explore opportunities for investment and trade.
  • Wesgro Business Briefing: In Cape Town on December 9, the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape, Wesgro, hosted a vibrant networking event where Atlanta delegates met with South African exporters and investors, fostering connections that will drive future partnerships.

Empowering Entrepreneurs and Celebrating Culture

  • A tour of the Mamelodi Business Hub on December 6 showcased collaboration with Georgia State University students supporting township entrepreneurs.
  • Discussions with South African leaders and creatives at Freedom Park on December 6 emphasized the shared cultural and historical connections between South Africa and Atlanta.
  • Visits to Amazon's African headquarters and The Wine Arc on December 9 and 10, respectively, highlighted e-commerce opportunities and Black-owned wine brands breaking into international markets.
  • A tour of Nike's Shapa Center in Soweto on December 4 modeled how private investments in sports support community growth and development.

Strengthening Historic Ties

Atlanta Phambili builds on a historic relationship between South Africa and Atlanta, from collaboration between U.S. civil rights activists and members of the South African anti-Apartheid movement to Nelson Mandela's historic 1990 speech at Georgia Tech.  This trip further cements Atlanta as a gateway for South African businesses to access U.S. markets and strengthens South Africa's position as a premier investment destination for Atlanta's private sector.

Transport Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa has called on South Africans to honour the sacrifices of road traffic enforcement officers and recommit to making roads safer for all. 

The Deputy Minister was delivering remarks at the World Remembrance Day of Road Accident Victims at a wreath-laying ceremony for fallen traffic officers in Pretoria on Sunday. 

Hlengwa highlighted the dual tragedy of lives lost to road accidents and those sacrificed by officers safeguarding others.

“Today, we gather to observe a day to reflect, honour, and remember those whose lives have been tragically cut short or forever changed by collisions on the roads globally. We also solemnly remember the fallen traffic law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty, trying to prevent road collisions and save lives. 

“As we remember the 69 traffic officers who died in the line duty since 2019, we reflect on the significance of their sacrifice. These officers gave their lives in the pursuit of justice and the protection of others,” he said. 

The majority of these officers, 28 in total, were from Gauteng, followed by 13 from KwaZulu-Natal, nine from Mpumalanga, seven each from the Eastern Cape and Limpopo, two from the National Traffic Police, and one each from the Free State, Northern Cape, and Western Cape.

The Deputy Minister said the officers did not shy away from danger but faced it with courage and resolve. In doing so, he said they showed the nation what true heroism looks like - a commitment to service that goes beyond duty and extends into the realm of sacrifice. 

The Deputy Minister reflected on the alarming road fatality statistics. South Africa recorded 11 883 road deaths last year, a 4.4% decrease from 2022. However, the figure still reflects thousands of shattered lives. 

“These tragedies are not just statistics; they are real people — mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, friends and colleagues. Behind every number is a person with dreams, aspirations, and loved ones, whose world is forever altered,” he said. 

Progress and Renewed Commitments

South Africa has made strides since the launch of the National Road Safety Strategy in 2016, with a 15% reduction in fatalities from the baseline of 13 967 deaths in 2010. Despite this, Hlengwa stressed that progress must accelerate to meet the 2030 goal of halving road fatalities.

In response, the government plans to revise the strategy, setting a target to reduce road deaths by 5% for the 2024/25 financial year. 

“Based on this it is self-evident that South Africa has made progress, achieving 15 percent reduction compared to 2010. Today is not just about grief, however — it is about action. Every life lost is a call to action for all of us to take road safety seriously. 

“As a country we have decided to review our National Road Safety Strategy to accelerate the rate of reduction in fatalities so that we may achieve the set target sooner rather than later. 

“Over the medium-term greater focus will be put on road safety education, engineering and law enforcement. Effective evaluation mechanisms will also be put in place to ensure the effectiveness, efficiency and impact of our programmes. The revised target set is to reduce road fatalities by five (5) percent for the 2024/25 financial year,” Hlengwa said.

A Day of Remembrance and Resolve

Hlengwa paid tribute to road accident victims and their families, urging the nation to remember the human cost behind the statistics. 

“Today, we stand together in the hope that our collective efforts can help prevent future tragedies. We remember that every life is precious, and every loss is felt deeply within families, communities, and nations.

“As we light a candle in remembrance, let us also light a flame of hope — hope for safer roads, for a future where fewer families have to experience the heartache of losing a loved one to a road accident,” he said.

The Deputy Minister outlined critical actions to prevent road accidents, including driver education, improving road infrastructure, and supporting survivors. 

“Road accidents are often preventable. Whether through better infrastructure, safer vehicles, responsible driving, or stricter enforcement of laws, there is much we can do to reduce the number of lives lost on our roads,” he urged.

Globally, South Africa lags behind some nations that have achieved remarkable reductions in road fatalities. Hlengwa pointed out that ten countries reduced fatalities by over 50% last year, providing a benchmark for South Africa to aspire to. – SAnews.gov.za

The Day 2 of the conference will have five key parallel medical and scientific sessions, covering topics such as oncology, diabetes and hypertension, fertility and reproductive care, and medical capacity building in other specialties like respiratory care, acute care, emergency pediatric and neonatal care, and more. Additionally, a community awareness session, Merck Foundation Health Media Training, will be conducted for African journalists. The night will include extraordinary storytelling and musical performances to celebrate the work of global environmental innovators and spotlight the creativity and innovation across African countries.

In addition to featuring the stories of The Earthshot Prize Finalists and Winners, the broadcast will include special performances and appearances from exciting musical artists and celebrities across East, West, Northern, Southern, and South Africa, as well as a host of international stars, including Grammy nominated artist and producer Davido, award-winning, internationally renowned artist Diamond Platnumz, Tony Award nominee and Grammy Award Winner Lebo M, supported by the internationally acclaimed Ndlovu Youth Choir, and international headlining DJ and producer Uncle Waffles.

Supermodel and television host Heidi Klum, actor and activist Nina Dobrev, multi-hyphenate artist and actor Tobe Nwigwe, and supermodel and beauty entrepreneur Winnie Harlow will join the broadcast to announce the five Prize Winners from each Earthshot category, which correspond to critical environmental goals we must meet within this decade. A special live green carpet pre-show, hosted by media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and rapper and TV presenter Moozlie will also be livestreamed globally via The Earthshot Prize's YouTube channel.

Founded by Prince William in 2020, The Earthshot Prize has become a powerful global search engine unearthing the best environmental solutions and a platform for impact to catalyze critical investment and resources towards these solutions. 60 environmental solutions have been honored as Prize Finalists and Winners since 2020, and more than 2,500 solutions have been introduced to Earthshot through our network of more than 400 Official Nominators. The Prize has also helped unlock more than £75 million in direct and in-kind support for these solutions, with ambitions to continue growing our ability to drive investment and support for emerging solutions.

Both Finalists and Winners receive dedicated mentorship, resources and technical support to help accelerate the growth of their solution during the year-long Earthshot Prize Fellowship Programme.
