Twenty suspects nabbed during Vala Umgodi operations in Limpopo

The prompt response from Limpopo Vala Umgodi multidisciplinary forces has led to the arrest of 20 suspects involved in illegal mining, drug dealing and violations of immigration laws.

In a statement on Tuesday, Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, said chrome worth over R1 million was also seized during an operation conducted on Sunday, following credible information from the community.

In Sekhukhune District, the task team acted on a tip-off regarding a drug dealer operating at the Groblersdal taxi rank.

Hadebe said the team’s swift response led to the arrest of a 31-year-old suspect, who was found in possession of 34 sachets of rock drugs, including 36 sachets of nyaope, 31 sachets of dagga, one plastic bag containing dagga and R656 in cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales.

A 53-year-old male suspect was also arrested at the same taxi rank for possession of four packs of illicit Remington Gold cigarettes.

“Further investigations led the team to a farm in Dithamaga village, Burgersfort, where illegal mining activities were taking place. Two male suspects, aged 38 and 58, were apprehended for illegally mining chrome with an excavator,” Hadebe said.

A total of 13 loads of chrome, with an estimated value of R1 058 560, and an excavator were also confiscated.

“In separate operations across the Capricorn, Mopani and Vhembe Districts, 15 individuals, aged between 22 and 41 years, were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act. The suspects were found to be in the country without the necessary documentation,” Hadebe said.

Hadebe has commended the joint efforts of the police and the community in combatting crime in the province.

She said the suspects are expected to appear before the respective magistrate’s courts in due course.

Twelve arrested for illicit mining in Northern Cape

Meanwhile, the continuous intelligence-driven disruptive operations conducted by the multidisciplinary teams of Operation Vala Umgodi, with a focus on illicit mining and other related crimes,  has led to the arrest of 12 suspects in the Frances Baard and Namakwa Districts, Northern Cape.

Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Molefi Shemane, said police received information about suspected illegal mining activities taking place at a mining hotspot in Kleinzee, in the west coast of the Northern Cape.

Further investigation led to the arrest of four suspects, aged between 35 and 57, for alleged illegal mining and trespassing on Saturday.

“The police seized equipment suspected to be used in the commission of illicit mining, and bags containing possible suspected diamond bearing material,” Shemane said.

In Frances Baard District, the police also received information about illegal activities taking place at identified locations in Barkly West.

Shemane said the police arrested five undocumented persons between the ages of 26 and 47, as well as the seizure of ammunition.

“Furthermore, members received information regarding the sale of drugs in Windsorton and upon arrival, a male suspect was searched, and suspected drugs were found in his possession. The 65-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested,” Shemane said.

During a search in another location in Kimberley, drugs were found and confiscated. A 50-year-old man was arrested for possession of drugs.

In an unrelated matter, a 36-year-old male was apprehended on Sunday in Galeshewe for dealing in drugs.

“Drugs with an estimated value of R3 000 were confiscated with a substantial amount of money believed to be the proceeds of criminal activities,” Shemane said.

Shemane has reassured that the police will continue with their concerted efforts in addressing illicit mining activities, as well as other related crimes.

Road crashes and fatalities increase during festive season

While law enforcement maintained a constant presence throughout the festive season, conducting operations around the clock - the preliminary 2024/2025 Festive Season Statistics reveal a concerning increase in crashes and fatalities, primarily attributed to human behavior. 

“Tragically, South Africa witnessed 1,502 deaths resulting from 1,234 fatal crashes during the 2024/25 festive season. The number of fatalities represents a year-on-year increase of 5.3% (70) compared to the 2023/24 festive season, with a 4.2% (50) increase in the number of crashes,” Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said during a media briefing, held in Pretoria, on Monday.

The preliminary 2024/2025 Festive Season Statistics indicate that 87% of crashes happened because of human behaviour, including hit-and-runs, jay-walking (pedestrians crossing or walking in the street or road unlawfully), fatigue, loss of control over vehicles, speed, drunken driving, and reckless overtaking.

“The number of people who died on our roads this festive season has increased because people continued to behave badly. In spite of our pleas and warnings, and notwithstanding our efforts to clamp down on irresponsible and reckless behaviour, it is clear that many road users – both drivers and pedestrians – continue to act without regard for the lives of others.

“Six provinces recorded increases in the number of fatalities in the 2024/25 festive season compared to 2023/24, namely KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Northern Cape and North West,” the Minister said.

The Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State recorded increases of 70, 54 and 21 fatalities as compared to 2023/24, while Gauteng, Western Cape and Mpumalanga recorded decreases of 76, 23 and 15 fatalities, respectively.

Concern over pedestrian fatalities

Creecy said pedestrian fatalities remain a huge concern, with 41% of all road fatalities being pedestrians. 

The highest percentage of pedestrian fatalities were recorded in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, which are the most populous provinces in the country in terms of vehicles and people.

Gauteng had the highest pedestrian fatalities at 63.84% followed by Western Cape with 53.9% and KwaZulu-Natal with 44.33%.

During this period, law enforcement conducted joint operations in line with the focus areas, including vehicle road worthiness, public passenger transport, drunken driving, execution of warrants of arrest, and speed law enforcement.

Law enforcement officers issued 711,184 fines for various traffic offences across the country. 

“Some 23,607 fines were issued to drivers who failed to wear seatbelts, while another 16,925 motorists were fined for using cell phones while driving. Then, 16,527 vehicles were found to be unroadworthy and issued with traffic fines, as well as their motor vehicle licence discs removed, particularly in areas where vehicles could not be impounded due to lack of impoundment facilities,” the Minister said.

In total, 8,917 motor vehicles were impounded in areas where facilities were available.

“To clamp down on drunken driving, speeding and other moving violations, our officers arrested more than 9,550 motorists, with 3,840 individuals arrested for drunken driving.

“A total of 414 drivers were arrested for driving at high speed and five amongst them were driving at excessive speeds of between 200km/h to well above 240km/h,” Creecy said.

The highest speedster was arrested in Gauteng, driving at 245km/h (kilometre per hour) in a BMW Sedan on N1 near Honeydew, on 18 December 2024.

“We, South Africans, must change our behaviour on the roads. As we said at the beginning of the festive season, government and our law enforcement agencies cannot do it on our own.

“The statistics clearly send all of us, as South Africans, one message: Drivers and pedestrians must change their behaviour. We must obey the law, we must obey the basic rules of the road,” Creecy said.

Interventions 

The Minister has asked the provinces to conduct a detailed analysis of their respective statistics, and come up with a clear plan for the way forward, by the end of January. 

This will include a look at severe consequences for those who continue to show a disregard for road safety.

“We will continue to direct our efforts at changing the behaviour of road users, invest in designing and engineering safer roads, enforcing safe speeds in high congestion areas, and enhancing emergency response systems and access to quality trauma care, which is essential to saving lives.

“By reducing response times and improving the availability of critical care, we can increase survival rates and reduce the long-term impacts of road traffic injuries. This initiative will require collaboration with the Department of Health, and other industry role-players,” she said.

Creecy said indications are that the implementation of 24/7 traffic policing shifts is more critical than ever. 

“During the festive season, we agreed to release National Traffic Police resources to provinces, to intensify road safety communication and education campaigns and strengthen monitoring of our law enforcement operations especially at night.

"This approach will serve as a blueprint for our road safety activities but will only succeed if it is consistent all year round, especially on weekends and in every province across the country,” the Minister said. -SAnews.gov.za

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of thunderstorms that have the potential to become severe with heavy rain and strong winds in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga from this afternoon. 

On Thursday, SAWS said the thunderstorms will occur with saturated soil and an additional 15-30mm of rain.

This is likely to cause localised flooding in susceptible low-lying areas and bridges, falling trees due to strong winds and localised service disruption due to power surges.

In addition, there will be poor driving conditions due to pooling of water on roads and reduced visibility can also be expected. Trees may also fall due to strong winds. - SAnews.gov.za

Department monitors Vaal Dam levels

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is closely monitoring the Vaal Dam after the dam’s water levels drastically increased from last week’s 24.3% to 46.2% this week.

According to the department’s real time data, the water levels have again significantly increased overnight to 50.53%.

Departmental spokesperson, Wisane Mavasa, said the dam has, for the past few months, been on a downward spiral with the department making plans to release water from the Sterkfontein Dam into the Vaal Dam, to augment its levels when it reached 18% in volume.

However, Mavasa said this will no longer be necessary, as the dam is rapidly rising. This is due to this week’s heavy rainfall experienced in Gauteng, and other provinces, including North West, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal.
She said the department is now clear of the risk of the dam dropping below its minimum operating level of 18%.

“The dam had experienced continuous decline over the past few months due to elevated temperatures which have led to increased evaporation losses, and the low inflows owing into the dam, due to lack of rainfall in the Vaal catchment.

“The current dam level is now plotting above 50% and there is a good inflow because of recent rainfall in the catchment. There is therefore no more a need for water release from Sterkfontein Dam to support Vaal Dam,” Mavasa said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mavasa said the rising of the dam levels has also boosted the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS) that provides water to Gauteng and key industries within the province that has shot up from 71.4% to 79.4% this week.

“Recent rainfall has significantly improved surface water storage levels in the country’s dams with 79.8% this week, a huge increase as compared to last week’s 74.5%. Although the heavy and disruptive rainfall has resulted in localised flooding in those provinces, it has also boosted their Water Supply Systems significantly,” Mavasa explained.

The Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal provinces have also experienced the highest upsurge with 10.2%, respectively.

The dam levels in Mpumalanga have increased from 82.9% to 93.1% this week, while KwaZulu-Natal increased from 81.0% to 91.2%.

Limpopo has also increased from 73.2% to 82.6% this week, while North West rose from last week’s 64.7% to 72.5%, with Free State seeing a considerable increase from last week’s 68.5% to 72.6% this week.

Rainfall in parts of the provinces has exceeded 150 millimetres (mm), while parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu Natal received more than 200 mm.

“There is an expectation of isolated to scattered rainfall over central and eastern areas of the country, particularly in [the] Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces this week, as a result, surface water storage in these areas is expected to improve further next week.

“However, the Department of Water and Sanitation would like to caution the residents in those provinces to be careful during the heavy rains, and urge residents to avoid water bodies, particularly when the rain can be disruptive, “ Mavasa said.

She also urged the public to stay away from rivers, lakes and dams, especially in the low-lying areas.

“Pedestrians should avoid crossing bridges, and motorists should also refrain from driving through flooded areas, even though the water seems to be shallow. Water can be deadly during the floods and should not at all be underestimated. Let us all keep safe and stay indoors, if possible.”

While the surface water storage capacity has improved in the majority of the country’s dams in most provinces, the department reiterated its call on citizens to continue to use water sparingly. – SAnews.gov.za

Police arrest 16 718 suspects during nationwide Operation Shanela

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested 16 718 suspects during its Operation Shanela crime crackdown, which ran from 6 - 12 January 2025, targeting criminal activities across the country.

“Through Operation Shanela, SAPS continues to take a bold and decisive approach in dealing with crime in the country. These crime fighting activities include tracking operations, roadblocks, high visibility patrols, stop and searches, as well as tracing of wanted suspects,” SAPS said in a statement. 

All Shanela operations are led by the Provincial Commissioner of each province. 

Just this week alone, the following arrests were made:

  •  2 907 wanted suspects were arrested. These suspects were wanted for various serious and violent crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, business and house robberies.
  • 122 suspects were arrested for murder. The majority of these suspects (36) were arrested in Gauteng, followed by the Eastern Cape (29).
  • 112 suspects were arrested for attempted murder.
  • 223 suspects were arrested for rape. The majority (80) were arrested KwaZulu-Natal.
  • 1 845 suspects were arrested for assault grievous bodily harm.
  • 835 drug dealers were arrested.
  • 2 282 suspects were arrested for being in possession of drugs, with the majority (1 088) of these suspects arrested in the Western Cape.
  • 129 suspects were arrested for being in the illegal possession of firearms, and the majority of these suspects were arrested in KZN (36).
  • 1 341 illegal foreign nationals were also arrested during this period
  • 419 drivers were arrested for drunken driving, with the majority of arrests in Gauteng (114).

Police registered the following successes:

  • 129 firearms were confiscated in the past week.
  • 1 129 rounds of ammunition were also confiscated.
  • 65 hijacked and stolen vehicles were also recovered during this week’s operations.

The police also highlighted major successes, which include the arrest of a 39-year-old man by police in Mpumalanga following a shooting incident where eight people were shot and killed outside a tavern in Pienaar on Saturday. 

The team confiscated a pistol and ammunition during his arrest and the suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

Police in Limpopo also apprehended eight suspects, including a councillor, on allegations of extortion at a construction site along the R555 road in Roossenekal, on 9 January 2025. 

In a separate incident, a joint operation conducted by Sandringham SAPS, Gauteng Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and a private security company led to the arrest of three Ethiopian foreign nationals suspected of trafficking in persons, kidnapping, extortion and contravention of the Immigration Act. 

The team acted on a tip-off from neighbours about suspicious activities at a house in Sandringham and found 26 Ethiopian nationals who were held captive inside the house. A pistol and one magazine were also seized.

Operation Vala Umgodi task teams continue to record commendable successes in the country.

Just last week alone, police arrested 62 suspects for illegal mining, and the majority of these suspects were arrested in the Free State.

A joint operation by Northern Cape Crime Intelligence, Organised Crime, North West Organised Crime, and Potchefstroom Public Order Police led to the arrest of a 36-year-old man suspected of business robbery in Potchefstroom. The team seized a pistol with its serial number filed off. 

Meanwhile, police in Mpumalanga arrested three men who allegedly shot and killed three men in an incident related to taxi conflict in Piet Retief on 9 January 2025. 

Four firearms, including a rifle and three pistols with ammunition, were seized in the incident. The three suspects are facing three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

“Police will continue with their operations by asserting the authority of the State to ensure the safety and security of all South Africans and visitors to the country,” the SAPS said. – SAnews.gov.za

Police seize counterfeit goods in Musina

Counterfeit and illicit goods valued at over R5 million have been seized in a police operation in Musina, Limpopo.

The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with its crime-fighting partners, conducted an operation that was spearheaded by the National Counterfeit Goods Unit, with support from the SAPS Gauteng Drone Team, including the Bloemfontein K9 Unit, South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs, and brand protectors on Sunday.

A roving team comprising SAPS members from specialised units deployed in Limpopo, as part of Operation Vala Umgodi, also participated in the operation.

The team executed a search-and-seizure warrant at a shopping mall in Musina's central business district.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, said more than 2 000 counterfeit and illicit items, including sneakers, clothing, cellphone accessories, perfume and consumables, were confiscated during the operation.

She said two Eritrean nationals and one Bangladeshi national, all asylum seekers, were arrested for dealing in counterfeit goods.

The Bangladeshi national faces an additional charge for bribery after attempting to bribe officers at the scene to evade arrest.

“On the same day, the team stopped and searched vehicles in the area, which led them to arrest a suspect for possession of a stolen vehicle. The members also seized dagga and drugs found abandoned in a taxi after the driver and commuters fled the scene on foot,” Van Wyk said in a statement.

Van Wyk noted that while primarily tasked with addressing crimes associated with illicit mining, the members contribute to combating a broader range of criminal activities in the province.

She said SAPS, together with its partners, remains steadfast in its efforts to eliminate the illegal trade of counterfeit and illicit goods, which poses risks to consumers, harm legitimate businesses, and undermine the economy of the country. – SAnews.gov.za

Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, has called on the residents of the province to remain vigilant as Cyclone Dikeledi approaches Mozambique. 

Although current reports indicate that the cyclone poses no immediate threat to South Africa, its proximity to Mozambique may result in potential risks to areas bordering Limpopo.

“The safety of our communities remains our utmost priority. We call upon all residents to stay informed, listen to official messages from our disaster management team, and act promptly in response to their guidance,” the Premier said on Monday.

Dr Ramathuba has assured residents that the province’s disaster management team is on high alert and has commenced proactive planning to respond to any possible impacts of the cyclone. 

The Limpopo government will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates to residents. 

Residents are advised to regularly check official weather updates and alerts, avoid spreading unverified information that may cause unnecessary panic, and ensure safety precautions are in place, particularly in low-lying areas prone to flooding.

The provincial government said it is deeply concerned about the damage caused by heavy rains in recent weeks. 

“Residents are strongly urged to exercise caution and avoid crossing low-lying bridges during heavy rains. Additionally, parents and guardians are advised to ensure that children do not play near rivers or streams, as these areas pose significant dangers during flood conditions. Let us work together to prioritize safety and prevent unnecessary tragedies during this challenging period,” the provincial government said. -SAnews.gov.za

Class of 2024 achieves historic pass rate

The Matric Class of 2024 has achieved an overall pass rate of 87.3%, making it the highest matric pass rate in the history of South Africa.

“I am proud to announce that in 2024, 615 429 learners passed the National Senior Certificate (NSC) – more than any other time in our history. South Africa’s national pass rate for the 2024 National Senior Certificate has therefore increased from 82.9% in 2023 to 87.3%,” Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube said on Monday.

Addressing the announcement of the 2024 NSC results in Johannesburg, Gwarube said this was the highest matric pass rate in the history of the country and should be a moment of great pride and celebration for all.

Nearly half of the learners who wrote the NSC examinations received a Bachelor pass.

Bachelor passes 

According to the Minister, 47.8% of candidates qualified for admission to Bachelor studies, which is a significant improvement from last year’s 40.9% and represents the highest number of Bachelor passes in recent history.

“This is a 6.9% increase from last year. In 2014, we produced 150 752 Bachelor passes. In just a decade this number has more than doubled in 2024 to 337 158 Bachelor passes.

“It is also encouraging to see that some of our provinces with the highest numbers of learners are achieving high numbers of Bachelor passes.

“In 2024, I am pleased to announce that KwaZulu Natal achieved the highest number of Bachelor passes with 84 470, followed by Gauteng with 66 979 and the Eastern Cape with 45 662,” the Minister said.

Approximately 67% of the Bachelor passes achieved in 2024 came from Quintile 1 to 3 schools, which are typically found in poorer communities.

“This percentage represents an increase from 2023. This means that poorer communities are producing more and more candidates who can go on to become doctors, engineers, accountants and scientists,” she said.

Distinctions 

The Class of 2024 achieved an impressive number of 319 651 distinctions.

“This represents a significant increase of over 65 000 distinctions from last year. Some of these increases were seen in key subjects, including Mathematics. I am pleased to report that every province increased the number of distinctions achieved in 2023.

“KwaZulu Natal was once more the top performing province in terms of the percentage of candidates obtaining distinctions, with 10.8% distinction potential achieved.

“Coming in second with 6.3% of distinction potential achieved was the Western Cape, followed by Gauteng with 5.3%. Notable progress was made by Mpumalanga and Limpopo in this regard where we saw this percentage increase by over 1% in 2024 when compared to the results for 2023,” Gwarube explained.

Every province improved on its performance from 2023, and every province achieved above 84%. 

Mathematics and Physical Sciences

In 2024, 69.1% of learners passed Mathematics, which is an increase from 63.5% in 2023. 

However, in Physical Sciences, while 75.6% of learners passed, this was a decrease from 76.2% in 2023. 

“While the number and percentage of learners achieving distinctions in Mathematics increased in 2024 from 2023, the number and percentage of learners achieving distinctions in Physical Sciences has dropped.

“The improvement in performance in Mathematics is encouraging. However, the decreasing participation rates in these key subjects, and the decrease in performance in Physical Sciences, highlight the urgent need to improve foundational literacy and numeracy to ensure that our schooling system produces learners who are confident and capable enough to choose and excel in Maths and Science subjects throughout their schooling career,” the Minister said.

Improvements 

In 2024, more high schools achieved a pass rate in the NSC examinations of between 80% and 100% than in 2023. 

“In 2023, the number of high schools achieving this was 4 493 and in 2024 this number increased to 5 387 representing 77.7% of our high schools. Also important to note is that the number of underperforming schools has decreased,” the Minister said.

Approximately 97% of learners enrolled for Grade 12 in 2024 ultimately wrote the NSC exams in 2024.

“In 2024, we saw the number of full-time candidates writing the National Senior Certificate examinations increase from 691 160 in 2023 to 705 291 in 2024.

“We also saw the number of learners with special education needs who wrote the National Senior Certificate examinations increase from 5 288 in 2023 to 6 470 in 2024.

“Furthermore, we saw 556 726 learners who are beneficiaries of social grants writing the National Senior Certificate exams in 2024 – 12 938 more than in 2023,” the Minister said.

She said the 2024 National Senior Certificate results for 2024 show that the schooling system was maturing, but that there was still much work to be done to improve the quality of education outcomes.

Severe thunderstorms expected over parts of the country 

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued weather alerts for severe thunderstorms that are likely to affect parts of Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The weather service has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for the three provinces that is valid from 9 am until 11 pm on Sunday.

The warning could lead to the flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas. It could also lead to traffic disruptions and damage to property and infrastructure.

“Tropical moisture is drawn in north of the country which will subsequently aid in the development of thunderstorms today, whereas there are areas that are already precipitating. This will result in adverse weather conditions over Mpumalanga as well as the southern parts of Limpopo.

“Due to the recent rains, there has been an increase in soil moisture, thus increase the vulnerability across the province,” the weather service said in a post on social media platform, X.

It further added that a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms has also been issued for most parts of Limpopo.

The impact of the warning includes localised flooding of susceptible low-lying areas and bridges, the possibility of the closure of low-lying roads and dirt roads, and poor driving conditions due to the pooling of water on roads and reduced visibility.

With predictions of severe weather conditions in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in the coming days leading to the weekend, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged all motorists to exercise extreme caution to avoid crashes.

The South African Weather Service has issued weather alerts for severe thunderstorms and disruptive rainfalls that are likely to affect visibility and travel between the hours of 6pm and 1am.

“This is likely to affect those who will be travelling on the N1 and R101 between Limpopo and Gauteng. Other routes that are likely to be impacted are the N11 from Alldays to Marble Hall, the R33 Lephalale via Marble Hall, R40 from Phalaborwa via Carolina to Barberton, R524 from Thohoyandou to Louis Trichardt, R71 from Tzaneen to Polokwane, as well as R81 from Giyani to Polokwane.

“In Mpumalanga, visibility will likely affect driving conditions along the following routes: N4 from Emalahleni to Johannesburg, N3 between Villiers and Heidelberg, N17 Oshoek border via Ermelo and Secunda to Johannesburg, the N4 from Lebombo border via Mbombela to Bronkhorstspruit,” RTMC said on Tuesday.

Driving conditions in some of these routes are likely to be affected by fog, which will make visibility poor.

Consider the following important safety tips:

  1. Reduce speed: Wet roads can be slippery. Drive at a reduced speed to maintain control of your vehicle.
  2. Maintain safe following distance: Increase the distance between your vehicle and the one in front to allow for longer stopping distances.

Call to exercise extreme caution on the roads

With predictions that South Africa will experience heavy rain in some parts of the country, the Department of Transport has urged road users to exercise extreme caution on the road.

According to the South African Weather Services (SAWS), inclement weather conditions will continue to affect the country’s roads until Friday, 10 January.

Heavy rain, strong winds, and reduced visibility are expected to persist creating hazardous driving conditions.

On Wednesday, 8 January, poor visibility as well as slippery roads have been predicted in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

“Under these conditions, motorists are strongly advised not to drive between 6pm and 1am in these three provinces,” the department said.

In Limpopo the roads that will be affected by these conditions are as follows:
•    N1 and R101 from Limpopo to Gauteng,
•    N11 from AllDay to Marble Hall,
•    R33 from Lephalala via Marble Hall,
•    R40 from Phalaborwa to Barberton,
•    R534 from Thohoyandou to Makhado,
•    R71 from Tzaneen to Polokwane and
•    R81 from Giyani to Polokwane.

In Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal, roads to be affected are the following:
•    N4, N12, N11, N17, N3, R40 and R33.

“No warning has been issued for Thursday and Friday. However, Mpumalanga and Limpopo will be affected by strong thundershowers from the early hours of the morning to about 10am. These conditions would lead to poor visibility and slippery roads, particularly on the R573 Moloto Road, from Marble Hall to Pretoria.

“The current road crashes and fatalities are of great concern, and motorists are urged to take responsibility for their safety,” the department said.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has called on motorists to consider the following important safety tips:

As holidaymakers continue make their way home, heavy rain and thundershowers are expected to continue affecting the eastern parts of the country.

South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecaster, Tokelo Chiloane, told SAnews on Tuesday that 80% showers and thundershowers were expected across the eastern part of the country, including Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal, while 60% and 30% to zero rain was expected in other provinces.

“We have an Orange Level 5 weather warning for the Zululand District Municipality in KZN, which can lead to flooding. In the central and northern parts of KZN, we have a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms.

“When you move to Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and some parts of the Free State and Northern Cape, we are looking at Yellow Level 2 warning for thundershowers,” Chiloane said.

While a weather alert for Wednesday was still being finalised, Chiloane said heavy rainfall was expected, mostly in the confirmed eastern part of the country, including Mpumalanga and Limpopo, where 80% chance of showers and thundershowers were expected.

“Sixty percent rain is expected in the northern parts of Gauteng and some parts of KZN, and 30% in other parts of the country,” Chiloane said. – SAnews.gov.za

14 undocumented foreign nationals nabbed for illegal mining in Limpopo

The Vala Umgodi multidisciplinary task teams have conducted operations in Limpopo, resulting in the arrest of 14 undocumented foreign nationals and three individuals engaged in illegal sand mining between 4 and 5 January 2025.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), 14 suspects, aged between 19 and 45, were arrested for violating the Immigration Act. 

Four were apprehended in Thohoyandou, in the Vhembe District, and 10 in Westernburg, in the Capricorn District.

In addition, three suspects, aged between 30 and 45, were nabbed in Apel, in the Sekhukhune District, for loading sand illegally.

“These disruptive operations, conducted in collaboration with the South African National Defence Force, targeted illegal mining sites linked to gold-bearing minerals, chrome, and sand extraction,” SAPS said in a statement. 

In addition, seven individuals were each issued fines for selling expired food in Tynmine, in the Waterberg District.

The arrested suspects are set to appear before the respective magistrate's courts soon.

SAnews reported that ongoing Vala Umgodi operations in the Bojanala Platinum and Dr Kenneth Kaunda Districts continue to bear fruit after police arrested six male suspects in Hartbeespoortdam in the North West on Wednesday last week. 

Between 30 December 2024 and 3 January 2025, 12 illegal miners were arrested for illegal mining, trespassing, and contravention of the Immigration Act in Stilfontein. 

In the last three months, over 1 000 illegal miners or zama zamas have emerged from an abandoned Stilfontein mine, where it is believed that hundreds more are still underground. – SAnews.gov.za

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has called for vigilance, patience and respect for the rules of the road as the festive season comes to an end and travellers return home. 

Roads leading out of coastal areas and neighbouring States are expected to experience high traffic volumes. Law enforcement officers have been deployed to monitor driver behaviour on the roads and reduce the number of crashes and fatalities. 

In a statement, the RTMC said 7 448 people were arrested on South African roads over the festive period for various offences, including drunk driving, speeding, and attempted bribery. 

The arrests were made between 1 December 2024 and 1 January 2025.

“The highest breath alcohol level recorded was 2.47mg/1 000ml on the R61 in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, on 27 December 2024. Eastern Cape recorded 455 arrests for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in December. 

“The highest speed recorded was in Limpopo on the N1. A motorist was caught driving at 209km/h in 120km/h zone on the 17th of December. 

“As of 1 January, a total of 1 157 032 vehicles were stopped and checked by road traffic authorities as part of the festive season enforcement plan aimed at promoting safety on national roads. Officers issued 408 783 written charges for various traffic violations and 6 034 vehicles were discontinued,” said the RTMC.

It urged motorists to be cautious when driving under rainy conditions. 

Drivers are reminded to put their lights on, reduce speed, increase following distance and avoid the use of cellphones and other distractions when driving in rainy conditions. – SAnews.gov.za

Limpopo police leave no stone unturned to arrest murder suspects

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has ordered investigating teams across all districts to mobilise all resources at their disposal to track down and apprehend the suspects involved in various murder cases.

The province has experienced about 11 murders from 31 December 2024 to date.

“These murder cases were reported in the main Capricorn district (three cases), Mopani (three cases), Waterberg (three cases) and Vhembe (two cases). The majority of these murders are believed to be emanating from domestic-related disputes. Out of these murders, seven suspects have been apprehended by the police,” the SAPS said in a statement.

In one of the cases, a wife was hacked to death by her husband in Bolobedu in the Mopani District on New Year’s Day. In another incident, a woman fatally stabbed her boyfriend after a physical altercation.

In another case, a 48-year-old male victim was allegedly killed by a 45-year-old male suspect believed to be his biological brother in Shongoane 1 on Wednesday night. According to information at police disposal, the two brothers were fighting when a 45-year-old suspect stabbed the victim, which is his brother, with a sharp object. The suspect has since been apprehended and is currently in police custody.

Furthermore, a 26-year-old female victim was murdered by her boyfriend on Thursday at about 02:30 in Marobala in the Capricorn District. The deceased was fatally stabbed with a sharp object by her 31-year-old boyfriend at his residence. The suspect fled the scene following the incident.

“We have... observed that the majority of these cases are a result of domestic violence. We call upon communities to seek professional assistance from social workers, pastors and traditional authorities in case they have disputes in their relationships.

“Multidisciplinary teams have been assigned and maximum resources mobilised to ensure that investigations are expedited to ultimately bring the remaining suspects to book in order to face the full might of law,” Hadebe said.

Hadebe has also extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

The country’s public health facilities have recorded a total number of 1 448 births on the first day of the year 2025, the Department of Health announced on Thursday evening. 

In a statement, the department said this is a decline compared to the 1 703 deliveries recorded last year this time.

Though the number of teen mothers has also decreased from 190 recorded last year, to just over 80 recorded this year, the department called on all sectors of society, especially families, to join hands with government and other non-governmental organisations to address teenage pregnancy.

“Teenage pregnancy often leads to irregular school attendance, poor performance and ultimately school dropout, especially for mothers who lack family support structures to take care of the babies when the mothers go to school. 

“The Department of Health, working together with sister Departments of Social Development and Basic Education, will continue to support all mothers through existing programmes to ensure their babies survive and thrive,” the department said. 

The breakdown of births per province revealed that Gauteng recorded the highest number of births with 387, followed by Eastern Cape (219) and Limpopo (191).

Deputy Minister of Police, Polly Boshielo, has condemned as a “heinous crime” the alleged statutory rape and subsequent impregnation of a 13-year-old child in Limpopo.

The Deputy Minister was in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Monday where 28-year-old Ditebogo Gololo, appeared on charges related to the incident.

Gololo is facing a charge of sexually grooming a minor and statutory rape.

“I hope this heinous crime does not happen again. The scourge of teenage pregnancy is very bad in this country. For the financial year under review, 2023/2024, a total of 29 150 gender-based violence and femicide perpetrators were arrested. 

“Out of them, 556 accused were handed down life sentences, 480 sentenced between 10 and 20 years, and 998 sentenced between 1 and 9 years. In Limpopo, there has been a challenge of rape cases involving children, especially in the Seshego and Matlala policing areas. 

“I have instructed SAPS in the province to implement a programme to address these social issues,” Boshielo said.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Gololo allegedly groomed the child after meeting at a mall in January this year, “until they became intimate in May 2024”. 

“The minor only revealed the incident to her aunt after experiencing complications, and later in November 2024, medical tests confirmed she was eight months pregnant, thus ultimately giving birth to a baby boy on Christmas Day,” the NPA said.

Gololo was arrested a day after the child gave birth.

“The docket will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for directives. The matter is postponed for bail application and further investigations to 08 January 2025, at Seshego Magistrate's Court. Gololo is remanded in custody,” the statement concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Limpopo police arrest 25 for illegal mining and other transgressions

Twenty-five suspects have been arrested for various transgressions, including illegal mining in Limpopo, said the South African Police Service (SAPS).

This as the SAPS’ Operation Vala Umgodi continues across the country.

In a statement on Sunday, the police said the 25 were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act, possession of illicit drugs, and involvement in illegal mining activities over the weekend.

“The operation was conducted between 28 and 29 December 2024 -which was a coordinated effort, together with South African National Defence Force. The operation was aimed at addressing illegal mining and related criminal activities that brings instability within the mining environments,” said the SAPS.

The suspects were arrested in various locations across the five Districts of Limpopo, for illegal possession of narcotics and unlawful mining. 

Police also apprehended numerous undocumented foreign nationals who were contravening the Immigration Act.

Illicit drugs such as crystal meth, along with mining equipment including shovels and spades were seized.

In Mokopane, Waterberg District, eleven undocumented foreign nationals were arrested. In Maake, Mopani District, five individuals were arrested while in the  Capricorn District, six arrests were made within the area. 

Additionally, the Sekhukhune District Task Team traced and arrested a 34-year-old suspect for assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH) in Groblersdal. Two suspects were also arrested for possession of suspected crystal meth and dagga in the Marble Hall policing area. 

The other suspect was found in possession of cash which amounts to R3000-00 believed to be proceeds from the drugs.

“The arrested suspects will face charges under the Immigration Act, possession of illicit drugs, illegal mining, and other related charges,” said the police.

Meanwhile, government says a number of illegal miners, known as Zama Zamas, have voluntarily emerged from the disused mine shafts in Stilfontein in the North West, indicating that these individuals have the capability to exit the underground tunnels independently. 

This is according to a statement issued by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) on Sunday.

“Their delayed emergence appears to be a tactic to evade arrest by law enforcement agencies. Contrary to claims that food underground ran out months ago, evidence suggests that the miners have had access to supplies until recently,” said NATJOINTS.

Twenty-two motorists are set to appear in court in the new year on charges of bribery and corruption.

The 22 were arrested by members of the National Traffic Police for alleged bribery across various parts of Limpopo, said the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in a statement.

“The motorists allegedly attempted to induce traffic officers to ignore violations of traffic rules by offering them money. Many of the motorists were caught driving without driving licences. They produced money to avoid arrest for their transgressions,” said the RTMC on Sunday.

The motorists are scheduled to appear in court next year on charges of bribery and corruption.

“The National Traffic Police have been deployed in Limpopo and other provinces to bolster efforts to enforce the law and reduce factors that contribute to road crashes and fatalities.”

The Limpopo Provincial Government has praised the quick action of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Seshego, which resulted in the arrest of a 28-year-old man for statutory rape.

The arrest follows an incident where a 13-year-old girl gave birth at Seshego Hospital on 25 December 2024.

SAnews reported today that over 1 360 babies were safely delivered at public health facilities across the country on Christmas Day.

According to the National Department of Health, the number of teen mothers has decreased from 145 in 2023 to just under 90.

Among the new teenage mothers is a 13-year-old who gave birth to a healthy baby at Seshego Hospital, located outside Polokwane. 

Three 15-year-olds delivered their babies at Emmaus, Hlabisa, and St Andrews Hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal.

In addition, a 16-year-old gave birth to a baby boy at Klerksdorp-Tshepong Tertiary Hospital in the North West.

Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, expressed her gratitude for the police’s prompt action.

“We welcome this quick response by the SAPS after the hospital had raised concern over a 13-year-old giving birth during Christmas. 

“It is now our responsibility to make sure that the judiciary acts in accordance with the extent of the crime. Statutory rape is visible in many parts of our province, and we need to end such a sad chapter.”

The Premier emphasised the importance of protecting the rights of children and ensuring that justice is served. 

“The man is in custody in Seshego and will soon make an appearance in court. We must remain vigilant and committed to preventing such heinous acts in our communities,” she added.

The Limpopo Provincial Government is dedicated to collaborating with law enforcement and the judiciary to eradicate crimes against children and create a safe environment for everyone.

“The government will continue to advocate for the protection of vulnerable individuals and ensure that those who perpetrate such crimes are held accountable.”

The Department of Health has announced that over 1 360 babies were safely delivered at public health facilities across the country on Christmas Day. 

This figure represents approximately 300 fewer births than the 1 708 babies delivered in 2023 and about 50 fewer than the 1 414 babies born in 2022.

The births included six sets of twins that were safely delivered in public health facilities across the country. 

The first Christmas baby was born exactly at midnight at Osindisweni Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by another delivery at 12:01 am at Nkhensani Hospital in Limpopo.

Two deliveries were recorded at 12:02 am at Standerton Hospital in Mpumalanga and Madwaleni Hospital in the Eastern Cape.

The department reports that Gauteng recorded the highest number of births, totalling 393. 

This is followed by the Eastern Cape with 196 births, and both the Western Cape and Limpopo each with 172 births. 

Mpumalanga recorded 152 births, the North West had 102, the Free State counted 79, and the Northern Cape had 49 births.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the current number stands at 42, as the department awaits final figures.

Immunisation and care

The department urged mothers to immediately commence the developmental journey of their newborns which entails immunisation to achieve a long and healthy life for their babies. 

“For every child to achieve their full potential in terms of healthy growth and development, they need healthcare, the right nutrition, initiation of exclusive breastfeeding, immunisation and timely care during illness.” 

The first 1 000 days of a child’s life are important because they lay the foundation for their physical, emotional, and academic development. 

“The department will walk side by side with the new mothers as they embark on this incredible journey of motherhood,” it said, adding that parents should ensure they are up to date with immunisation to protect their children against vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles and polio.

“The Department was alerted of dead fish floating on the watercourse in the evening of Thursday, 19 December 2024, and has since dispatched teams to investigate and collect water samples at different sites around the area of occurrence for analysis to determine the cause of the fish kill,” DWS said in a statement.

Residents are warned not to consume the animals following the incident.

“DWS cautions members of the public not to collect and consume the dead fish from the sites until investigations are concluded. The public is further advised not to swim in the Nandoni dam or drink water from the watercourse as it is raw and untreated, and not fit for human consumption. 

“A detailed statement will be issued once the investigation has been concluded,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za
