Search for 11 missing Cape Town fishermen called off

Location: News

Search for 11 missing Cape Town fishermen called off

Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister, Barbara Creecy, says she is saddened by the news that the search for 11 missing fishermen has been called off.

“I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the families of the 11 crew members who are now presumed deceased.

“I understand that the families of the bereaved fishermen have been informed that the search has been called off and that they are receiving professional counselling and support, and appropriate counselling will be given to the other fishermen who survived this incident,” said Creecy.

The MFV Lepanto, a vessel within Sea Harvest’s Viking Fishing Division, sank, causing the fishermen to go missing.

The vessel sank around 35 nautical miles offshore from Hout Bay on Friday afternoon, 17 May 2024.

Nine fishermen have been rescued, while 11 others are still missing at sea, according to officials.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Cape Town, working together with other stakeholders, led the search and rescue (SAR).

“A review of the search progression, the search efforts, and the continuous lack of sighting reports from the incident start, and the unfavourable weather, led the MRCC to conclude the SAR effort,” Creecy explained.

The Minister has since welcomed the appointment of the casualty investigation team by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA).

“The investigation will determine the cause of the sinking and ensure that all safety protocols were followed,” she said.

Sea Harvest reported that nine out of the 20 crew members, who were on board the vessel, were rescued and arrived safely on Friday night in Cape Town aboard the MFV Armana, another vessel from the group that was in the area at the time of the distress call.

The men were reunited with their families after a physical evaluation by a medical doctor and were provided with immediate trauma counselling.

Sea Harvest CEO, Felix Ratheb, said ensuring the safety of their staff at sea is a top priority and that the company is devastated by this tragedy.

“We have been in ongoing contact with the families, with a senior team and a counsellor visiting each family of the missing men today. We will continue to support them, as well as the rescued men and their families. We are also providing updates and counselling for our broader employee base, as this has been extremely upsetting and sad for all of us,” Ratheb said.

According to the CEO, the company is working closely with the relevant authorities, primarily SAMSA, to establish the cause of the accident as soon as possible.

“We wish to thank our employees and the rescue organisations for their active search and rescue operations since Friday,” he said in a statement.

Creecy has since asked fellow South Africans to keep the bereaved families in their thoughts and prayers. – SAnews.gov.za

Communities warned against vandalising election posters

Communities warned against vandalising election posters

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has cautioned communities against vandalising, defacing and removing posters of political parties ahead of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections.

“Anyone found to be tampering with these posters or vandalizing them will be arrested. Such cases have been reported and arrests have been made,” Deputy National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili said on Sunday in Pretoria during a media briefing.

Led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the State Security Agency (SSA), the NATJOINTS reminded communities that the Constitution protects citizens’ rights to make political choices.

WATCH | NATJOINTS media briefing

These rights, includes the right to participate in the activities of, or recruit members for a political party and to campaign for a political party or cause.

In addition, the Electoral Act 73 of 1998 prohibits the unlawful removal and defacing of posters published by a registered party.

On 29 May 2024, South Africans will once again get an opportunity to exercise their right to vote in the 2024 National and Provincial elections, which marks the country's seventh democratic elections.

Fake news

The NATJOINTS has urged members of the public to fact-check information first before sharing it on social media platforms.

“One of our biggest threats at the moment is fake news. We strongly condemn the spreading of fake news, unverified information, rumours or threats as this seeks to cause panic and confusion, and in some instances incite possible violence.

“Those who are found to be sharing inflammatory messages and inciting violence will be charged accordingly. We, therefore, urge prompt reporting of these incidents to ensure that law enforcement deals with such issues,” Mosikili said.

She called on political leaders to be responsible in the manner in which they communicate on public platforms.

“We have noted an increase in the number of service delivery related protests. To mitigate this, increased police visibility through the deployment of the public order policing unit has been made to potentially volatile areas to address large crowds.

“We will continue to work closely with key role players to monitor developments and attend to them. Law enforcement agencies are on the ground and will continue to apply fundamental policing principles, guided by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. Every law enforcement officer has a responsibility and an obligation to execute their mandate, professionally, impartially and with integrity, and to do so within the confines of the laws of the country,” the Deputy National Commissioner said.

The NATJOINTS said measures that have been put in place to ensure that the country’s upcoming general elections proceed without any incidents of crime and disruptions.

“Having conducted a national security assessment with key role players in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, we are satisfied with the operational plan that is currently being implemented, and can assure South Africans that a conducive environment for a peaceful election has been prepared.

“While measures have been put in place, the ultimate responsibility of a safe and secure election lies with each one of us. It is a partnership that is required to create harmony, respect for self and others even as we make our way to the polls and back home,” Mosikili said. –SAnews.gov.za

Good Nature Agro named one of Africa’s Fastest Growing Companies of 2024

Location: News
Good Nature Agro

Good Nature Agro (https://GoodNatureAgro.com/), the Zambian company helping smallholder farmers reach the middle class, has been recognized by the Financial Times in the annual ranking of Africa's Fastest Growing Companies of 2024, focused on identifying top performers in Africa's private sector. This ranking places Good Nature Agro as number 44 on the list and the only Zambian company in the top 50.

The company has accomplished this feat through measured and consistent growth in their legume seed and commodity business lines, while increasing incomes for the more than 20,000 smallholder farmers with which they work.

2024 also marks the 10th  anniversary of Good Nature Agro. Starting in 2014 with just 40 smallholder farmers in Kasenengwa District, Zambia, the company's founders have remained committed to the company's mission since day one. Today, Good Nature Agro farmers are present in all provinces of Zambia and the company has expanded its offerings to Malawi. The company has two active processing plants in Lusaka and Chipata, Zambia, an active seed breeding program and lab space, a proprietary digital platform for farmer and customer engagement, and more than 175 full-time employees. Good Nature Agro is also building a state-of-the-art export and processing facility in the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Zone(MFEZ).

Good Nature Agro Co-fonder and CEO, Carl Jensen, is thrilled with the news of the ranking, “We are proud to be included on the list, and we intend to use this opportunity to highlight our work with smallholders and the strength and potential of the Zambian agricultural economy. Credit for the strides we have made over the last 10 years goes to the hard work of our farmers, team, investors, and partners. Collectively, we are primed for a leap forward, and we will work tirelessly to move more smallholder farmers into the middle-class and emergent farmers towards generational wealth.”

On top of training, financing and production with Zambian farmers, Good Nature Agro has for the last 3 years been focusing on aggregating legume seed and commodity needs in the wider Southern and Central African region. “Being a Zambian-born and based company has strategically placed us to fulfill grain needs from beyond Zambian borders. We are exporting high-value beans, soya beans and groundnuts to food processors in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, and we continue to prospect both production and supply in the Eastern African region. We are looking to onboard more customers and anyone looking for a reliable supply of legume seeds and commodities in and beyond the region. The Financial Times listing affirms our constant commitment to growth and service to our farmers and customers” said Sunday Silungwe, Founder and Director of Communications.

Representing Zambia alongside Good Nature Agro on the list are  Zamseed (#91) and Zambeef Products (#113). The list of Africa's fastest-growing companies, compiled by Financial Times in collaboration with Statista, a research and database company, highlights advanced, modern, and thriving businesses in Africa fueling the global economy in the 21st century. The list showcases the growth of private companies across different sectors and offers a brief overview of the recent corporate landscape where technology, Fintech, and other businesses have had to adapt to a challenging environment. Good Nature Agro salutes all other companies represented as peers and examples of resilience and job creation.

Emergency personnel “true heroes” as 36 pulled from building site

Emergency personnel "true heroes" as 36 pulled from building site

The number of people retrieved from the collapsed five-storey building in George has risen to 36 as of Wednesday morning.

This means 39 others are currently unaccounted for, while seven people have been declared dead.

According to the Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, the multi-disciplinary team of more than 200 emergency services personnel continues with its rescue operations at the site of the collapsed building on Victoria Street.

Seventy-five construction workers are said to have been on-site at the time of the collapse, which occurred around 2pm on Monday, 6 May 2024.

The Premier has thanked all those assisting during this tragedy.

“From the first responders who have been working tirelessly since Monday afternoon to save the lives of the trapped construction workers, to residents who turned out in their numbers to offer help in any way that they can. You all make me as your Premier of this extraordinary province humble and grateful for everything you have done and are still doing,” the Premier said after touring the site.

He said the teams on the ground are working tirelessly to rescue the remaining 39 individuals.

“I cannot express the emotions I felt yesterday when the site suddenly went completely quiet in the hope that our teams might be close to locating another survivor.”

READ I George tragedy: Call for organisations to prioritise safety in workplaces

He also took the time to express his gratitude to the Western Cape residents for stepping up when confronted with incidents of this nature.

He added that while an arduous few days still lie ahead as search and rescue efforts continue, the heart and soul that volunteers and non-government organisations (NGOs) have shown in offering support to the families of the affected construction workers has been extraordinary.

“There are so many to thank, and I know that there are countless more organisations and residents that I must still thank. Thank you to LoveGeorge, Gift of the Givers, SARZA, the Lions of George, Garden Route Food Pantry and Food Sock Meals, Neighbourhood Watches and Community Policing Forums, and all the individual residents who have helped.”

“Without us all pulling together, we would not have been able to respond to this incident in the way that we have. We must not give up hope. To all the emergency personnel assisting: you are true heroes,” he said.

Winde said his heart goes out to the families of the deceased.

“I share your pain. We will do everything we can to ensure we determine the exact cause of this incident. Every time one of those huge pieces of concrete is lifted from the site, I hope fervently for good news.”

On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa offered his deep condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased.

“The President’s thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones as well as the families of close to 50 people who are trapped in the rubble,” his statement read.

He also wished the rescue team the best as they go about their operations and said the investigations into the cause of the incident must aim to bring closure to the community and prevent a repeat of this disaster. – SAnews.gov.za

George tragedy: Call for organisations to prioritise safety in workplaces

George tragedy: Call for organisations to prioritise safety in workplaces

Employment and Labour Minister, Thulas Nxesi, says the collapse of the building which was under construction in George is a sobering reminder of the critical importance of prioritising safety in the workplace.

“With the loss of lives and the entrapment of individuals, this incident has sparked a call to action for organisations to reevaluate their health and safety protocols and practices,” Nxesi said.

This comes after a multi-storey building under construction in Victoria Street, collapsed on Monday afternoon with 75 construction workers on the site at the time of the incident.

According to the latest statement issued by George Municipality on Wednesday morning, the number of patients admitted has increased to 36, with 39 people still unaccounted for. Seven people have been declared dead.

Nxesi said it is imperative to recommit to the principle that no job is worth risking the safety or lives of employees.

“Every effort must be made to prevent similar incidents in the future. Redoubling efforts to promote a culture of safety, vigilance, and accountability within organisations is paramount.

“It is a collective responsibility to honour the memory of those lost by ensuring that their lives were not lost in vain. Strengthening the commitment to health and safety is essential. Let us work together to prevent such tragedies from occurring again,” Nxesi said.

Nxesi conveyed his heartfelt condolences to family and friends of the deceased construction workers involved in the incident and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.

“No words can adequately express the sorrow felt for the lives lost and the anguish experienced by those awaiting news of their trapped loved ones. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” Nxesi said.

The Minister said the department is receiving real time information on the ground from the department’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspectors and inspector general, who were dispatched on site when the incident came to the department’s attention.

“We are also aware that multiple disaster service personnel, including SAPS search and rescue teams, with sniffer dogs are involved in a rescue operation to retrieve the trapped construction workers.

“A number of construction crew on site at the time of the incident and deceased workers have been reported, but at this stage we await final confirmations,” Nxesi said.

He added the department will work through the teams on the ground and outlined protocols to communicate and update the public.

“In terms of our processes, we will await the official handing over of the site to the department to enable us to proceed with investigations as per Section 31 and 32 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The handing over is normally preceded by the finalisation of rescue and recovery interventions,” Nxesi said. – SAnews.gov.za

CTFL Masterplan has had a positive impact on local industry

Location: News

CTFL Masterplan has had a positive impact on local industry

More than 20 000 jobs have been created in the past five years since the clothing, textile, footwear and leather (CTFL) industry’s masterplan was launched.

This was reported to the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel by stakeholders at a meeting in Cape Town on Thursday.

Major retailers have sourced 371 million more units of clothing items from local manufacturers over the same period, a 51% increase on the baseline of units bought locally. The volume of clothing imported from China has dropped in major clothing categories, and the value of the clothing imported increased, showing success in the fight against under-invoicing.

According to a statement by the department, these figures were released at a meeting at the Prestige Clothing factory, owned and operated by South African retailer, TFG, as part of a report back to CEOs of large retailers and manufacturers, as well as leaders from labour and government.

“Over this period, we've been able to take an industry which had been decimated by imports and low investment, and stabilise it through the collaboration and partnership which the masterplan has provided,” Trade, Industry, and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel said at a media briefing after the meeting.

“These efforts have built a platform which has led, in just a short time, to increased local procurement; increased manufacturing employment; and better administration of imports at the country’s ports of entry,” Patel said.

The masterplan was developed with the consensus of stakeholders in the sector and included undertakings in place by retailers to increase their procurement of locally manufactured CTFL products.

In return, manufacturers in the sector committed to increasing investment in productive capacity and technology, while building manufacturing ecosystems to advance transformation and inclusion, and advance worker empowerment.

Workers in the sector committed to efforts to strengthen the industry and promote the Buy South African campaign in communities.

Government meanwhile committed to an upgrade of customs enforcement to stem illegal imports, a competitiveness enhancement incentive program and implementation of appropriate CTFL tariffs and rebates.

“The decrease in imported volumes, accompanied by increasing declared values is great news for the industry and jobs. It means that we are making progress to levels where imported clothing and footwear are being declared at their fair prices.

“The industry has faced systematic import fraud through under-invoicing of garments and their illegal import. This has the effect of unfairly pricing imports below their market value and depriving the fiscus of revenue for healthcare, education and crime-prevention.

“The support of the South African Revenue Service has been important and valuable,” the Minister said.

The department has provided R2.5 billion to the industry through the Clothing, Textiles, Footwear, and Leather Growth Program (CTFLGP) to improve its competitiveness and productivity.

In addition, R4.4 billion in loan capital has been provided by the Industrial Development Corporation to help increase productivity and meet increasing local demand.

“The last five years of collaboration and partnership have been immensely successful. The industry was on its knees, with many suggesting it was in terminal decline. However, since the masterplan was implemented, we’ve seen an increase in investment, and today the industry is revitalised, employing more people than it did when we started this journey,” said the CEO of TFG, Anthony Thunstrom, at the same media briefing.

“Investment and training have meant that we can manufacture as efficiently in South Africa as anywhere else in the world. We generate our best profitability on South African-made products. Local manufacturing has had a real positive impact on the performance of our business,” he said.

Herman Pillay, CEO of the TCI Apparel Group, said: “We’ve seen a huge improvement in manufacturing since 2019. We’ve seen the establishment of new companies, many of them black-owned. We’ve had good support from the retailers, but at the same time, we see increasing opportunities as we improve these channels of collaboration.

“The collaboration we’ve seen under the Masterplan in the CTFL sector is a real case study of what can be achieved when stakeholders come together.”

Speaking on behalf of workers, Susan Khumalo, President of the Southern African Clothing and Textiles Workers Union (SACTWU), said: “The masterplan came at an important time, after years of significant challenges for the industry. With the inception of masterplan, we have seen positive change in the industry. It’s only been five years, and we hope with the way forward to can see more growth and more jobs for workers.”

“One of the things we should not neglect is the power of social dialogue. The masterplan has provided a platform where problems can be collectively solved through the energy and creativity of all stakeholders, ultimately to grow employment and manufacturing output,” said Etienne Vlok, union researcher.

Ashley Benjamin, General Secretary of the National Union of Leather and Allied Workers (NULAW), said: “We are seeing a number of success stories in the footwear manufacturing industry. A number of companies are now producing high-end leather footwear for the export market, including the United States.”

Minister Patel emphasised that the industry in 1994 is vastly different from that of today.

“The CTFL industry was very inwardly focused and relied heavily on high tariffs and very low wages. Immediately following the introduction of democracy in South Africa, we were faced with two compounding challenges, namely the reduction of tariffs agreed to by the previous regime before the end of apartheid, and the impact of China entering the global market. Many countries around the world lost their clothing industries.

“In the past 15 years, while there were significant job losses, South Africa managed to hang on to part of its industry.

“By 2009, the industry made its first attempt at a restructuring, with new trade measures and a competitiveness programme that followed, and with a better collaborative response, which was finally formalised with the signing of the masterplan in 2019.

“Looking forward, we have identified a number of things we can do to take advantage of the emerging opportunities which the masterplan brings. We need to consolidate and deepen the partnership, and improve the collaboration across the value chain from textiles to garment manufacture to retailers and workers.

First, we need to strengthen footwear production in South Africa. Second, we want to identify additional products for localization in clothing. Third, there needs to be greater visibility of South African-made products in retail stores and to address the challenge of certain non-South African online platforms that uses tariff loopholes.

“Finally, there is an opportunity to tell the transformation storyline better. We have a large number of black industrialists operating in the space,” he said.

Michael Lawrence, Executive Director of the National Clothing Retail Federation (NCRF) said: “The masterplan is also being used as a platform for sustainability and the greening of the industry. The masterplan is not just solving the problems of yesterday, but addressing the problems of tomorrow as well.”

The CTFL sector now employs more than 500 000 South Africans, including 250 000 manufacturing jobs and more than 280 000 retail jobs. – SAnews.gov.za

Health dismisses reports of new COVID-19 variant

Health dismisses reports of new COVID-19 variant

The National Department of Health says it has noted with concern old and fake news about the COVID-19 Omicron XBB variant circulating on social media.

These fake posts further advise people to wear face masks because of an allegedly “deadly and not easy-to-detect variant”.

“This is a misleading message which first resurfaced during the peak of the pandemic without a traceable source.

“We urge members of the public to be vigilant and ignore this malicious social media content whose intent is to cause unnecessary panic and confusion, especially as the country is entering influenza season,” the department said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the department, COVID-19 remains circulating at relatively low levels around the country just like in other parts of the world.

However, it said, there is no need for the public to panic because many people have developed some level of immunity from both the vaccines and infections.

“The current strain or variant in circulation is less severe and less transmissible.”

However, the department said that taking protective measures daily, including non-pharmaceutical interventions such as hand hygiene, will help to prevent the spread of other respiratory infections including influenza.

“The department will keep the public abreast as and when there is a surge in cases of illness caused by any virus of concern or outbreak of any disease.”

On Sunday, the department urged the public to take extra precautionary measures to protect themselves and their loved ones against respiratory infections, which are expected to increase over the winter season.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), which monitors the circulation of respiratory viruses throughout the country, has notified the department that it is currently the peak season of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which some can confuse for COVID-19 due to common symptoms.

RSV causes illness mainly in young children but may also contribute to respiratory disease in older people.

The flu season is expected to start in the next few weeks and the department is advising those at high risk of contracting the virus to get the flu vaccine to prevent severe health complications.

Groups at high risk include the elderly who are over 65 years old, those with underlying illnesses such as heart and lung disease, people living with HIV and tuberculosis, as well as pregnant people. – SAnews.gov.za
