Gautrain, PRASA collaborate to transport rugby fans

Location: News

Gautrain, PRASA collaborate to transport rugby fans

In an effort to showcase Gauteng’s integrated urban transport, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and the Gautrain Management Agency (Gautrain) have teamed up to transport fans to this weekend’s Springboks and All Blacks test match.

“We are showcasing the fact that here in Gauteng, commuters can walk or take a bus or taxi to a PRASA or Gautrain Station, and board a train to get to the Emirates Park Stadium, via Ellis Park Train Station,” Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy said on Sunday.

Rugby fans will be able to board the Gautrain and ride to Park Station, cross over to the revamped PRASA Park Station Mall, grab something to eat at any one of the food outlets, and then board the train to the game on Saturday, 31 August 2024.

“The train ride from Park Station in the Johannesburg CBD [central business district] to Ellis Park Station is three minutes. What we are doing for the game is to illustrate how different elements of public transport can and should work together,” Creecy said.

PRASA and the Gautrain Management Agency, working together with the City of Johannesburg and the Rugby Union at Emirates Park Stadium, decided to throw their weight behind this international event to ensure a hassle-free, safe transport solution for the fans who want to use the train.

The event is also supported by the Gauteng Provincial Government, as the host province.

Rugby fans will be able to board the Gautrain at any of the seven stations between Hatfield and Park Stations (Hatfield, Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Marlboro, Sandton and Rosebank) or any of the five stations between OR Tambo International Airport and Park Stations (OR Tambo, Rhodesfield, Marlboro, Sandton, Rosebank) – of course changing trains at Sandton Station.

Emphasising the critical role that rail plays in the daily lives of South Africans, the Minister said the Department of Transport will forge closer links between provinces and municipalities to ensure that people can go to work or school, or a rugby or football match, using public transport.

“Our government, across the national, provincial and local spheres, must work together to design and build sustainable cities with integrated transport systems which will assist in growing our country’s economy and which is ultimately for the benefit of our citizens.

“The proposed expansion of the Gautrain network, further north and south, is a clear example of our intention to further integrate our public transport system to achieve sustainable cities that work for our people,” the Minister said. -SAnews.gov.za

Prof Nkondo remembered as an exceptional intellectual and loving father

Location: News

Prof Nkondo remembered as an exceptional intellectual and loving father

An intellectual, revolutionary and patriot, who dedicated his life to building the intelligentsia in South Africa; and also a loving husband, father and grandfather, passionate about education and a community leader.

These are the words used to describe the late Professor Muxe Nkondo, who was laid to rest today after his passing on Sunday morning at the age of 83.

Delivering the Eulogy at the Freedom Park Heritage and Museum in Pretoria, Deputy President Paul Mashatile said Nkondo was a well-known name in local politics, Southern Africa and the continent.

He reminded mourners that Nkondo produced great intellectuals, academics, Ministers and public servants, who are today serving the country with distinction.

“I am equally pleased that we are sending him off [from] a place that he passionately supported and equally loved. It is at this place that we took the decision that we put to rest those who have served our nation with distinction. It is here that we have agreed that we spend quality time with those who have left us,” said Mashatile at the Special Provincial Funeral of renowned academic and social policy specialist, Professor Nkondo.

The funeral service was held at Freedom Park Heritage Site & Museum in Pretoria on Friday.

The late academic occupied senior roles as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of the North and Vice-Chancellor of Venda University.

“It is the wisdom of Prof Nkondo and many that today we do not have an identity crisis and because of them we can proudly say we are Africans, and ours is to build a nation that is a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, united and prosperous society.”

The Deputy President also told mourners that he was also part of the Nkondo family and grew up under the late Curtis Nkondo, who was the Professor’s brother, who served in the African National Congress (ANC).

“By being a member of this family, I also had the opportunity to have Prof Nkondo deliver a speech and bless our union during my wedding celebration,” he recalled.

As a novice in the arts, creative and heritage sector, during his tenure as the Deputy Minister, and later as Minister of Arts and Culture, the Deputy President said he leaned on the wisdom of eminent individuals, including Nkondo.

“As we have gathered here today to lay to rest Professor Muxe Nkondo, I am pleased to have worked closely with this exceptional individual, a defender of human rights and an extraordinary advocate for social cohesion and unity.”

Mashatile called on mourners to persist in combating all manifestations of discrimination, as the Professor “staunchly” advocated during his lifetime.

“We have always known that no political democracy can survive and flourish if the masses of our people remain in poverty, without land, without tangible prospects for a better life. Hence, attacking poverty and deprivation has remained high on the agenda of... government.”

The Deputy President said Nkondo's legacy should inspire future generations to continue the struggle for a more just and equitable society.

“This is also the objective of the Government of National Unity (GNU). I am confident that Prof Nkondo would have concurred with my assertion that the establishment of GNU is a significant development in our democracy in that it brought different political parties to work together to build the country of our dreams.”

The Deputy President vowed that the ANC-led GNU will succeed in the implementation of the three strategic priorities, including inclusive economic growth and job creation, maintaining and optimising the social wage, and building a capable, ethical and developmental State.

“We had hoped to include Professor Nkondo’s insights as we prepare to hold the National Dialogue, which former President [Thabo] Mbeki raised here in Freedom Park and after that President Cyril Ramaphosa announced during his inaugural address that indeed, the country would hold a national dialogue.”

The Deputy President said government will not deviate from its mission to enhance and transform the lives of communities in rural and marginalised regions, which Nkondo also lived for.

“I can confidently state that Professor Nkondo has run a good race through his significant contributions to the political and intellectual landscape.”

His wife, Professor Olga Nkondo, also paid tribute to her late husband and said he was a father who loved all his children.

“His happiest moments were the birth of his grandchildren. He appreciated all the conversations with all of you and phone calls he received from all who were away,” she said to her children.

She said the Professor encouraged her to pursue her academic ambitions and supported her.

“You were able to welcome everyone at home, a home of love, a home of care and togetherness. When I asked you how you’re able to welcome everyone to care and share with everyone, you said those were your parent’s teachers.

“You were compassionate, you cared so deeply for your family and everyone. But what I appreciated most about you as a father, was that you never raised your hand to your children. You were a loving father and provided us with a home,” she added of her late husband. – SAnews.gov.za

SA’s Mpox disease under control, Cabinet

Cabinet has moved to reassure South Africans that the Mpox outbreak is under control.

The disease has now been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS) by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

Addressing the media during a post-Cabinet media briefing in Pretoria on Thursday, Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni reported that to date, the total number of positive cases recorded in South Africa stands at 24.

The cases include three deaths, 19 recoveries and two active cases undergoing home isolation.

“Of these, 12 cases were reported in Gauteng, 11 in KwaZulu-Natal and one in the Western Cape,” Ntshavheni said.

Cabinet has called on members of the public to play their part by supporting the government’s efforts to prevent the spread of Mpox by remaining vigilant and exercising non-pharmaceutical interventions such as heightened personal hygiene to prevent further transmission.

“Cabinet supports the call by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his capacity as the African Union (AU) Champion on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response for all partners to collaborate closely with the Africa CDC to ensure that there is appropriate support from the international community, guaranteeing equitable access to medical countermeasures, including diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines,” the Minister said.

Tackling foot-and-mouth disease

Cabinet has also noted major progress made in tackling foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the Kouga and Kou-Kamma Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape, with the last clinical case reported in mid-July.

Ntshavheni said animal movements in and out of the affected regions continues to be monitored to prevent the spread of the disease to unaffected areas, in terms of the Disease Management Area, and the transportation of livestock from one place to another [which] requires a transport permit from a local state veterinary office, to prevent the spread of the disease.

“The 30 cattle farms that have tested positive for the disease have been placed under quarantine, and vaccination efforts continue to control the spread of infection and reduce the severity of clinical symptoms.

“Additionally, pre-emptive vaccination has been carried out on a further 37 farms identified as high risk due to their proximity to infected areas. In total, over 92 000 cattle and nearly 600 sheep across 67 farms have been vaccinated,” Ntshavheni said. – SAnews.gov.za

Home Affairs Chairperson Calls for Speedy Conclusion of Assessment of Refugee Reception Closer to Ports of Entry

Location: News

Republic of South Africa: The Parliament

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, Mr Mosa Chabane, is distraught about the death of a refugee at the Desmond Tutu Refugee Reception Centre in Pretoria on Tuesday following a reported stampede. The death of another refugee undermines the spirit of South Africa's strong legal and human rights framework on refugees and asylum seekers' rights, as encapsulated in the Refugees Act 130 of 1998, and South Africa's global and regional international refugee law obligations.

Mr Chabane emphasised the need for the Department of Home Affairs to fast-track the finalisation of the assessment of the implications of relocating refugee reception centres closer to ports of entry. The one-stop-shop facility proposal in the White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection: Towards a Complete Overhaul of the Migration System in South Africa (2024) makes an argument for refugee reception offices to be located at ports of entry to facilitate immediate assessment of asylum claims.

“It is necessary to have in place refugee reception centres that offer quality services to asylum seekers and refugees to ensure adherence to international obligations and respect to human rights,” Mr Chabane emphasised.

The Chairperson also called on the Department of Home Affairs to work with sister departments to conduct a broad investigation on the causes of the stampeded that resulted in the death. Also, the department must urgently devise strategies to prevent any possible recurrence of this incident.

The committee has a scheduled an oversight visit to the centre in October and hopes that the investigation will establish the cause of the incident.

A nation’s health, is a nation’s wealth

Location: News

A nation's health, is a nation's wealth

South Africa’s health system is too essential to development to be weakened by mismanagement, funding crises, and other problems.

“We expect all stakeholders to bring solutions and work with the Departments of Health and Science and Innovation to implement them,” said Acting President Paul Mashatile on Thursday.

The Acting President was speaking at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where he presided over the signing of the second Presidential Health Compact, an initiative established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2019.

The health compact is a framework for cooperation between critical sectors and stakeholders to strengthen the health system and monitors and evaluates preparations for implementing the National Health Insurance (NHI).

The stakeholders include government, business, labour, civil society, health professionals, unions, service users, statutory councils, academia, and researchers to develop sustainable and inclusive solutions to challenges in the national health system.

Its pillars range from the development of human resources, improving access to medicine, vaccines and health products, upgrading infrastructure and private sector engagement.

It also zooms in on quality healthcare, public sector financial management improvements, governance and leadership, community engagements, and information systems to pandemic preparedness.

The Acting President told delegates present that implementation was the foremost priority of the country's seventh administration.

“Effective policy implementation means we can take the right actions and follow through with the plans, leading to successful outcomes. I have full confidence that implementation is the priority of all of us gathered here today.

“On behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa, it is my privilege to sign the second Presidential Health Compact today.”

He said he believed that a healthy nation is more economically productive and prosperous.

“A healthy population enjoys higher life expectancy, better quality of life and overall wellbeing. As a result, providing quality healthcare is of the utmost importance to all of us,” he added.

Universal healthcare coverage

He said Africa is committed to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of “ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages”.

“This is a bold commitment to achieve universal health coverage. It is a commitment to provide access to affordable medicines and vaccines for all. If our nation’s health is truly to be our nation’s wealth, we must fix our healthcare system.”

He said fixing the healthcare system will effectively protect the population against public health emergencies, such as HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, or Mpox.

The Acting President also outlined challenges that prevent government from providing decent and quality healthcare to all South Africans.

Lack of funding and collaboration

He also touched on healthcare funding challenges due to budget cuts and a constrained fiscal environment, compounded by inefficiencies, mismanagement and corruption in resource allocation.

However, the Acting President said budgeting in the health sector is steadily improving to ensure a more equitable allocation of resources.

“Less money is being lost to litigation. This is thanks to the hard work of the Health Sector Anti-Corruption Forum, which continues to expedite prosecutions and recover stolen funds.”

With greater collaboration, he said the resources and capabilities of both the public and private sectors can be brought to bear to serve those who need healthcare most.

However, some progress has been made as well with 149 new primary healthcare facilities being completed by November 2023.

In addition, 30 new hospitals are either opened or under construction.

The Acting President also took the time to applaud the private sector for the crucial role it plays in strengthening health systems.

“Our experience with COVID-19 showed how we could deepen public-private partnerships. With greater collaboration, the resources and capabilities of both the public and private sectors can be brought to bear to serve those who need healthcare most,” he added. – SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet calls on men to sign pledge against GBVF

Cabinet calls on men to sign pledge against GBVF

Cabinet has reiterated its call on South African men to join the initiative by President Cyril Ramaphosa to take a stand against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) by signing the virtual pledge to take a decisive stand against the scourge.

President Ramaphosa launched the call to action by signing the pledge alongside men from all sectors of society in Pofadder, Northern Cape, during the 2024 Women's Day celebration on 9 August.

READ | President speaks out on gender-based violence

Briefing media on the outcomes of the Cabinet Meeting in Pretoria on Thursday, Minister in The Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said by signing the pledge, men commit to be part of the solution by maintaining positive behaviour and attitudes, and to take responsibility for their actions.

“It also commits men to never raise a hand against a woman, to treat women as equals, respect their rights, and to treat them with dignity. Managing GBVF as a collective will result in healthier, safer and more peaceful communities in which women and children can thrive,” Ntshavheni said.

The virtual pledge can be signed at www.stateofthenation.gov.za/endGBVF

Cabinet has also commended the opening of the 65th Centre at the Mitchells Plain Hospital in Cape Town earlier this week, to support victims of GBVF.

Ntshavheni said government’s establishment of the Thuthuzela Care Centres across the country is a response to the urgent need for prevention, response and support for victims of violence, especially women and children.

Concern over teenage pregnancies

Cabinet has further urged society and parents to help solve the challenge of adolescent pregnancies, by reporting anyone who engages in sex with a minor (a child under the age of 16) as it is a criminal offence.

This follows concern over the alarming statistics of adolescent pregnancies, where children as young as 10 years of age are prematurely becoming parents.

“If the country does not work together to address this challenge of teenage pregnancies, women and young girls will continue to be trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty, lack of educational and economic prospects,” Ntshavheni said. – SAnews.gov.za

#WomensMonth: SAPS honours outstanding veterinary nurse

This year, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is observing Women's Month by highlighting the work of its women in blue, who are not only game changers in their respective fields, but who also go beyond the call of duty to serve and protect South Africans and visitors.

Today, the SAPS introduces the nation to Captain Mariaan Nel, a qualified veterinary nurse attached to the SAPS Veterinary Services in Bloemfontein, Free State.

The Veterinary Services is a specialised unit that resides within the component, Visible Policing and Operations.

Nel joined the service 13 years ago as a veterinary nurse at the rank of captain shortly after she obtained a National Diploma in Veterinary Nursing from the University of Pretoria. She also holds a degree in Accounting.

She is one of five female veterinary nurses in the Service and currently the only nurse based in the Free State province as part of a pilot project. In total, there are eight veterinary nurses nationwide in the SAPS.

As a veterinary nurse in the SAPS, Nel's duties include the following:

* Execute primary health care support to SAPS animals;

* Monitor the primary health status of SAPS animals and report epidemiological phenomena;

* Conduct veterinary inspections at SAPS K9 and Mounted Units; and

* Present veterinary and animal handling courses to SAPS members

Being based in Bloemfontein, Nel travels vast distances to ensure the welfare of 37 dogs and nine horses attached to the various K9 and Mounted Units within the Free State.

Police dogs and horses not only enhance police visibility but they are also deployed during crime prevention operations. They assist with investigations on crime scenes, trace suspects, detect narcotics and assist with search and rescue operations.

Nel says her profession may not place her at the forefront of fighting crime, but it gives her satisfaction to ensure the SAPS’s four-legged crime fighting heroes stay in tip top shape.

"I am passionate about the well-being of animals, in particular SAPS animals. I encourage girls and young women to pursue a career in the police, as it is rewarding to know your services make a valuable contribution towards a safer country for all," said Nel.

Government outlines further plans to commemorate Women’s Month

Government outlines further plans to commemorate Women’s Month

Government departments will continue to host a variety of activities to commemorate Women’s Month.

On 9 August, South Africa commemorated Women’s Day in the Northern Cape under the theme: “Celebrating 30 years of democracy towards Women’s Development”.

READ | President Ramaphosa pays tribute to women

This follows the launch of Women’s Month on 31 July.

This year’s Women’s Month marks the 68th anniversary of the historic march of thousands of South African women from all walks of life to the Union Buildings in 1956. The march was in protest of the introduction of apartheid pass laws for Black women in 1952.

“During Women’s Month, we celebrate women as active agents of change and social transformation. The commemoration also allows us to take stock of achievements and the challenges that remain while mobilising support for the further development of women,” the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) said in a statement.

The GCIS believes this year’s Women’s Month marks an important juncture for collective reflection on how South Africa has empowered and advanced the rights of women over the past three decades.

“We also celebrate 30 years of the Women’s Charter, which was established to drive equality.”

Government said it will advance the Women’s Charter for Accelerated Development that was formulated in 2021 to accelerate economic reforms to unlock women’s economic progress.

Several socio-economic empowerment programmes and events will take place during the month including a trade expo, fashion show, and social dialogues.

Advancing women

The Women Economic Assembly (Wenoca) will launch its research project findings on the ‘Economic Empowerment of Women in South Africa’s Property Sector’ at the University of South Africa (Unisa) in Pretoria.

The Wecona study focuses on using evidence-based methods to explore and address the challenges faced by women in the property sector and sub-sectors and identifies opportunities for economic empowerment.

The Charlotte Mannya Maxeke Foundation and Freedom Park in promoting social cohesion and discussing issues that delay women’s empowerment as a threat to gender equality, will host a Women Inclusivity Dialogue.

The dialogue will focus on assessing progress 30 years later and celebrating women's empowerment.
The session will also seek to find solutions to justice and equality for women led by women.

Meanwhile, the Department of Transport will host an information-sharing session for Cross Border Women Operators, to increase the participation of women in the cross-border market leading to the transformation of the industry. It will also encourage them to consider other sectors within the cross-border market.

In addition, the Department of Mineral Resources will host a Women in Energy and Mining Symposium to share opportunities in the energy and mining sector for women and the youth.

Youth initiatives

On 12 August, the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) in partnership with the National Youth Development Agency launched the Job Shadowing Programme in all nine provinces through the respective Offices of the Premier.

In addition, the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) first-quarter report was released last week.
The PYEI is South Africa’s most comprehensive effort to address youth unemployment to enable more young people to move from learning to earning.

The GCIS said the PYEI is committed to addressing the gender gap in employment and a significant achievement of the intervention is that 70% of the opportunities have been secured by young women.

Women in law enforcement

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Parade is the celebration of women in uniform supported by men in solidarity with the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and United Nations Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security that was adopted by the United Nation (UN) Security Council on 31 October 2000.

The resolutions acknowledge the disproportionated and unique impact of armed conflict on women and girls.
In the Northern Cape, a provincial law enforcement parade will be held in Kuruman, to display a disciplinary approach which encourages service delivery in various sectors of government and further advocates the empowerment of women.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) has also started a campaign to highlight and celebrate women in the service who are behind major crime operations and also various fields within law enforcement such as forensics, crime intelligence and criminal investigations.

Public engagements and awareness campaigns

Across provinces, various community dialogues and workshops will take place on gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) initiatives.

Government in partnership with civil society will hold the 3rd National Men’s Day Against GBVF which will be officiated by Deputy President Paul Mashatile and His Majesty the King Misuzulu kaZwelithini on 24 August 2024.

The event led by the Goodmen Foundation in partnership with DWYPD seeks to use this event to increase awareness about the impact of GBVF on society, educate citizens about gender equity and profile support available for survivors and facilitate healing.

Women in transport

The National Aviation Gender Summit (NAGS) 2024 themed: ‘Lift as we rise: The journey towards 2030!’ will examine the progress made by the South African civil aviation industry towards this goal.
The summit will focus on addressing gender transformation gaps within the sector and emphasise the significance of mentorship in promoting gender equality.
The NAGS 2024 is targeting female aviation professionals and various industry representatives with responsibilities and a personal stake in issues of gender equality and diversity.

Women in the public service

Various provincial heads of departments and Directors-General with senior women managers will host the Public Service Women Management Week to evaluate and monitor progress on the implementation of women empowerment and gender equality programmes in departments.

“Ending the scourge of GBVF requires the efforts of government, private sector, civil society and every member of society. It is the responsibility of all South Africans to end the culture of silence around gender-based violence and protect the women and children.”

In elevating the fight against GBV in his 2024 State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Cyril Ramaphosa initiated the anti-GBV campaign, in which he called upon all South African men to unite to end GBV.

“Government continues to uphold its constitutional responsibility and national priority to protect, promote and advance the rights of women and persons with disabilities and the 2024 Women’s Month programme seeks to shine a spotlight on women in diverse fields and the strides made for advancing gender equity in the past 30 Years of Freedom and Democracy,” said the GCIS.

Further details on the events listed above as well as additional events are listed on the Women’s Month calendar which can be located at www.gov.za. – SAnews.gov.za

Justice dept works to restore integrity of State Attorney and Master's Offices

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is implementing a “robust” turnaround strategy for the Office of the State Attorney, following allegations of fraud, corruption and malfeasance.

This is according to Justice Minister Thembi Simelane who briefed the media in Pretoria on Friday.

“The Department is currently implementing a robust turnaround strategy within the Offices of the State Attorney. This strategy is designed to address allegations of fraud, malfeasance, and corruption, as identified by the Special Investigating Unit [SIU],” the Minister said.

The Minister said rooting out corrupt individuals at the office is paramount to maintaining its integrity.
The office has been dogged by reports of malfeasance.

In one instance, a lawyer for the State Attorney’s office was arrested on charges following an SIU investigation and was released on bail of R20 000 for allegedly defrauding that office. In another incident, an assistant of the State Attorney – together with their co-accused – was ordered to pay back some R4.4 million after allegedly colluding to defraud the Gauteng Department of Health.

“We are committed to ensuring that all implicated individuals, regardless of their current employment status, are held accountable. This includes following through on the SIU's recommendations and initiating disciplinary proceedings where necessary.

“The integrity of the State Attorney’s offices is paramount, and we will continue to enforce our anti-corruption strategy to protect state resources and maintain public trust,” she explained.

Efficiency at the Master's Offices

Turning to the challenges at the Master’s Offices, the Minister said reforms are being undertaken to maximise its effectiveness and efficiency.

“These reforms are part of our broader efforts to combat corruption and improve service delivery within the justice system. The turnaround strategy for the Master’s Offices includes implementing the SIU's recommendations and enhancing oversight mechanisms to prevent future misconduct.

“We are focused on improving efficiency and customer service at all Master’s service points through strategic collaboration with key stakeholders. Restoring public confidence in the Master’s Offices is a top priority,” Simelane said. – SAnews.gov.za

Nuclear power procurement Ministerial Determination withdrawn

Nuclear power procurement Ministerial Determination withdrawn

Minister of Energy and Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has announced that the Ministerial Determination for the procurement of 2 500MW of nuclear energy, has been withdrawn.

The Minister was speaking during a media briefing held on Friday in Pretoria.

The determination, and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (Nersa) concurrence of the process, had come under legal pressure with groups contending that, amongst others, public comments had not been sought and the procedure had not been fair.

“I have taken the decision…to withdraw the gazette to allow for that public participation to happen.

“The only time we got to know and be alerted that the process was not subjected to a public consultation process is when the [court] papers were filed and the Minister took the decision that we are withdrawing the gazette; we allow for that public participation so that the process is clean…and transparent,” he told media.

In December last year, the Minister announced that South Africa would soon begin the procurement process for some 2 500MW of nuclear energy.

At a media briefing at the time, the Minister explained that the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) had to satisfy a raft of rigorous National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) suspensive conditions, which took into account various factors before the go-ahead could be issued.

As a result of the withdrawal, the Minister said, the process for the procurement will be delayed.

“Of course, there’s a penalty you pay as a result of this decision [in] that you are delaying the process. But we are happy to delay the process so that we are able to allow for each and every party in the country that wants to add a voice in how we are going to procure this process for them to be given the opportunity to be able to make that submission.

“So it will add another three to six months in the process. We are happy to do that for as long as we protect the integrity of the process; for as long as we cement the transparency of the process so that there’s general public confidence in the work that we are doing.

“I want to give confidence to the South African public that we will take you every step of the way. We will carry South Africans every step of the way to preserve the integrity of any procurement process, including the nuclear procurement process especially given its checkered history,” he explained.

Energy mix

Despite the withdrawal, the procurement of nuclear energy still remains a government plan for the country’s energy security.

Nuclear energy forms part of government’s Integrated Resource Plan 2019’s envisaged energy mix for South Africa.

“Nuclear is part of the mix. Nuclear is part of the future but it’s important that as we go out…the procurement process must be able to stand the test of time. In this instance, it’s the ability to be able to subject itself to scrutiny.

“Let’s go back to that process; accord the public an opportunity to scrutinise, respond and then on the basis of that [Nersa] can make a determination on concurrence. Once we receive that, we’ll issue the gazette and ensure that we procure,” he said. - SAnews.gov.za

Government working to finalise Marikana tragedy claims

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister, Thembi Simelane, says government remains dedicated to addressing claims arising from the Marikana tragedy.

Today marks the 12th anniversary of the Marikana tragedy.

On 16 August 2016, 34 mineworkers at the Lonmin mine in the North West were shot by police while they were demanding a salary of R12 500 a month.

Ten police officers were also killed in the days leading up to the Marikana massacre. Speaking at Friday’s media briefing, Simelane described today as a “sombre chapter in the nation’s history that continues to resonate deeply”.

According to Simelane, about R352 million has been disbursed in claims related to Marikana.

“This reflects our ongoing efforts to ensure that those affected receive the compensation they are due,” she said at the briefing held at the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) in Pretoria.

The beneficiaries include the families of the 34 mine workers who lost their lives, as well as the injured and arrested mine workers.

“Each case has been assessed individually to ensure that compensation aligns with legal frameworks and court directives.

“We have resolved most aspects of the Marikana matter, apart from constitutional damages, which are currently under consideration by the Gauteng High Court. We remain committed to finalising this matter and ensuring that justice is served.”

Meetings

Over the past few weeks, the Minister said her office has conducted a series of comprehensive meetings with management and branch heads to gain a detailed understanding of the department’s operational challenges and opportunities.

They have also consulted with the entities reporting to the department and said they have received invaluable input from these briefings as they prepare for the new administration.

“We are grateful for the messages of support and constructive advice from various organisations and institutions within the justice cluster. These insights will be instrumental as we work together to uphold and promote fair justice practices,” she explained.

Special Tribunal

In addition, the Minister said the department remains resolute in its commitment to bring perpetrators of corruption to justice.

The Special Tribunal, established in 2019, she stressed, continues to play a crucial role in recovering State funds lost to corruption.

To date, she said the Tribunal has successfully recovered an estimated R15 billion, demonstrating the effectiveness of this specialised judicial body.

She also announced that the Presidency will soon announce the names of the Judges of the Special Tribunal, ensuring that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has the judicial support necessary to pursue further cases of corruption and malfeasance. – SAnews.gov.za

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has completed and inaugurated the Hamidiye Mosque Ornamentation Project in Johannesburg, South Africa. The project aims to strengthen the historical and cultural ties between Türkiye and the South African Muslim community.

The Hamidiye Mosque, built in the mid-19th century, holds historical significance as the site where Mahatma Gandhi launched the civil disobedience movement with the pass burning in 1908. In 1980, the mosque was designated as a cultural heritage site and was renovated by TİKA at the request of Jamiatul Ulama. As part of the project, the mosque's main ceiling was adorned with the Surahs of Al-Fath and Al-Fatiha, while the women's prayer space was decorated with traditional Turkish motifs. Sultan Abdulhamid II's tughra was placed at the entrance of the mosque.

Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ganief Hendricks; Turkish Ambassador to South Africa, Ayşegül Kandaş; TİKA's Coordinator in Pretoria, Abdulkadir Abukan; Jamiatul Ulama Secretary General and Hamidiye Mosque Imam, Ebrahim Bham; Muslim MPs, diplomats and representatives from NGOs attended the opening ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Kandaş highlighted the significance of collaborating with the South African Muslim community and underscored the value of TİKA's projects in South Africa.

Hendricks expressed his gratitude to TİKA for the mosque's ornamentation project and shared his family's historical connection to the mosque. He noted that his great-grandfather was one of the founding members and had organized a fundraising meeting in front of the mosque during the Tripoli War to support the Ottoman Empire.

TİKA's Coordinator in Pretoria Abukan stated that TİKA will continue its efforts to preserve shared heritage in South Africa and strengthen existing connections.

Mr. Bham, Secretary General of Jamiatul Ulama and Imam of Hamidiye Mosque, referred to the congratulatory and welcome letter presented by the mosque community to Ottoman Consul General Mehmet Remzi Bey. He emphasized that the mosque has been a symbol of shared heritage for Turkish and South African Muslims since its establishment.

During the opening ceremony, Islamic calligraphy artist Refik Çarıkçı introduced the project to the guests and demonstrated calligraphy techniques.

This project is viewed as a significant step in strengthening the ties between Türkiye and the South African Muslim community, preserving shared cultural heritage and advancing diplomatic relations.
