‘We are not afraid’– Young women in South Africa show resilience as they fight HIV/AIDS and gender based violence

Listening to the soulful singing of young women and girls in Nomzamo township in Strand, Cape Town, South Africa, and watching their jubilant dancing, it would be difficult to guess the complex and life-threatening challenges they have faced in their young lives. These girls and women, members of the Young Women for Life Movement, have every reason to be ecstatic; they are extricating themselves from the cycle of poverty and the effects of HIV/AIDS and GBV in a country where women are disproportionately affected by HIV.

Of the nearly 7.5 million adults living with HIV in South Africa by 2021, nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) were women, with black women aged 25-34 years having the highest prevalence, at 31.6 per cent, and highest incidence, at 4.5 per cent according to data from The Lancet. While the infection rate has dropped from 14 per cent in 2017 to slightly less than 13 per cent in 2022, according to the Human Sciences Research Council's 2023 data, the rates are still quite high, translating to more than 1 in 10 persons living with HIV in South Africa.

This feminized HIV epidemic is mostly due to high levels of inequality. South Africa has the highest income inequality in the world, according to the World Bank. Unemployment is rampant, and many women and girls do not have good economic prospects. For many, this makes them vulnerable to risky sexual behavior as they struggle to survive. This is compounded by high rates of GBV in the area and in the country in general. Young women and girls in Strand area's townships know this all too well.

“Before I got wind of the Young Women for Life Movement, I had given up on life,” said Sinesipho, fondly referred to as “Shorty” due to her pint size by members of the group that she now considers her sisterhood. Sinesipho Petshana had a difficult background at home, low self-esteem, and was engaging in risky sexual behaviour out of desperation to help make ends meet.

“By speaking with me about my potential and growing my skills through training, the group changed my mind and this helped me change my life,” she said. Now working as a cashier in a retail store in Cape Town, she is proud of how far she has come and calls the Young Women for Life Movement a lifesaver.

Started in 2019 as an informal group of just eight young women and girls aged 15 to 28 who wanted to give each other moral support, the Young Women for Life Movement has now impacted 8,000 girls in South Africa alone. Convened by the Southern Africa Catholic Bishops' Conference and Peace Commission, the movement is supported by UN Women through funding from the Unified Budget, Results and Accountability Framework (UBRAF) as part of the outreach under the HeForShe campaign.

Through its partnership with Work4aLiving, a skills-building programme and one of the three pillars of the Young Women for Life Movement, the community group has trained women and girls in Nomzamo Township in entrepreneurship, financial management, baking, and other skills to help them begin to earn an income and become self-sufficient. Earlier this year, 70 girls graduated from a hospitality course offered under the Movement. Many of them have already secured jobs in the city.

Guguletu Mdoba (Gugu), 29, another member of the Movement, is a shining example of how the girls and young women are pulling themselves out of poverty. Now a renowned baker in the area, Gugu's products are so popular that she can barely keep up with her customers' orders. Training on financial literacy helped her learn how to save and budget, and she has used this new knowledge to expand her enterprise. This year, she bought a bigger kitchen stove and also began training other young women and girls in the area to bake, which is having a positive ripple effect on their household incomes. Overwhelmed with demand, she is now expanding into a more established fast-food shop.

“Some of the girls and young women in the group are living with HIV,” said Phindile Maseko, Coordinator of the Young Women for Life Movement, who the members call Sis. Phindile, meaning Sister, out of admiration. “They were so discouraged when we met them that they had even stopped taking antiretroviral (ARV) medication as they felt that they had nothing to live for,” said Phindile, who also serves as the Facilitator of Work4aLiving.

The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated the situation for these girls. Like elsewhere on the globe, the pandemic wreaked havoc on incomes and livelihoods in this already vulnerable township, driving many families into hunger. The effects were complex as lack of access to meals severely interfered with ARV compliance.

With support from UN Women and partners, girls and young women from the Movement managed to access seedlings and technical know-how to start small-scale vegetable farming. The project thrived and now not only caters for the members, their families, and the community, but also generates income through the supply of fresh produce to shops.

What started as a small circle of 80 girls in 2019 has become a movement of 8,000 girls in South Africa alone. The project is expanding to Eswatini, Lesotho, Botswana and also starting a chapter in Namibia.

“The Young Women for Life project demonstrates that it is possible to reduce HIV infections and end the cycle of risky behaviour and violence,” said Jacqueline Utamuriza-Nzisabira, HIV/AIDS Specialist for UN Women East and Southern Africa and the manager of this project, “These girls decided to take their lives into their own hands and are no longer on a destructive path that was going nowhere.”

The young women's and girls' rallying cry, “Asinaluvalo”, meaning "We are not afraid", is testament to their resilience and newfound hope.

The dtic to support programmes outlined by the President

The dtic to support programmes outlined by the President

Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) Minister Parks Tau says his department's mandate is clear in that it will work to support and enhance the programmes instructively outlined by President Cyril Ramaphosa during the Opening of Parliament Address in Cape Town on Thursday evening.

“This is important, especially if we calculate the costs of poverty which constitutes 60 percent of the National Budget,” Tau said.

Responding to the Opening of Parliament Address (OPA) on Friday, Tau said the reality is that government has to adopt a mission-oriented approach to industrial policy and strategy.

“As such, we must implement with laser focus, the programme of priorities outlined in the Government of National Unity (GNU) to benefit all South Africans, most particularly, women, the youth majority and people with disabilities,” Tau said.

He said if government does not implement the priorities of social justice, and poverty alleviation, then the nation-building and social cohesion projects will remain an elusive ideal.

“In line with what the President said when talking about smart industrial policy, the dtic  group will implement sectoral plans building on the successes recorded in the automotive, clothing and textiles, retail and agro-processing sectors.

“Smart industrial policy speaks to underlining beneficiation and export-led growth. It highlights the imperatives of the Public Procurement Act that will complement the essential legislative tools to unlock localisation and transformation.

“Every year the South African economy spends 25% of the national wealth created on imported goods. Not only is this propensity to import much greater than our competitor countries, it is also out of sync with our developmental needs,” Tau said.

Tau said government will reverse this in pharmaceuticals and medical devices, green industries, food products and manufactured goods, among others.

He said smart industrial policies and programmes are being implemented to respond to the global market trends towards electric vehicles.

“As you know, in February this year, the Minister of Finance announced that the government will introduce an investment allowance for new investments. This will see producers having the opportunity to claim 150 percent of qualifying investment expenditure on electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles within the initial year.

“On structural transformation relating to B-BBEE, the dtic group will use the public procurement regime to advance B-BBEE and SMMEs. We will work with National Treasury to ensure that the Procurement Bill, under consideration by the President is implemented,” Tau said.

The Minister said government is aware that the Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) elements of the B-BBEE Codes have the potential to raise several billions from the private sector.

“Therefore, working closely with the B-BBEE Commission in monitoring the contributions of the ESD, black industrialists and SMMEs will benefit from such financial contributions.

“Our common prosperity is contingent on building a better life for all, and not for some. In line with what the President said, the DTIC group will refocus on industrialisation in a targeted manner using available policy instruments.

“Our message to our SADC partners is a call-to-action for a united effort to promote regional industrialisation. This will leverage South Africa’s trade with Africa which has increased significantly, growing from just over R343 billion in 2019, to just under R547 billion in 2023,” Tau said.

In his Opening of Parliament Address (OPA), President Cyril Ramaphosa said government had decided to place inclusive economic growth at the centre of the work of the Government of National Unity and at the top of the national agenda.

“The Government of National Unity will pursue every action that contributes to sustainable, rapid economic growth and remove every obstacle that stands in the way of growth,” President Ramaphosa said. – SAnews.gov.za

PalmPay Named Among Top 250 Fintech Companies in the World by CNBC and Statista

Location: Business
PalmPay

PalmPay (www.PalmPay.com), a leading Africa-focused fintech platform, has been included in the 2024 edition of CNBC and Statista's prestigious list of the “Top 250 Fintech Companies in the World.” This recognition underscores PalmPay's rapid growth and significant contributions to advancing financial inclusion.

The CNBC/Statista list honours fintech pioneers significantly transforming the financial services industry through technology. More than 2000 companies were evaluated globally based on general and sector-specific KPIs to determine the final selection. In 2024, some of the most influential fintechs in the world were included in the list, including Alipay, Nubank, Monzo, and Revolut. Six other African firms made the list: Flutterwave (Nigeria/US) – Payments; Kuda (Nigeria/UK) – Neobanking; MTN (South Africa) – Payments; Piggyvest (Nigeria) – Financial planning; and Yoco (South Africa) – Payments.

PalmPay has developed an integrated platform that caters to consumers and businesses in the African market. The startup, which has been operating since 2019, pioneered a unique model in Nigeria that provides financial services such as money transfers, bill payment, credit services and savings via a one-stop-shop fintech ‘superapp' and mobile money agents.

This dual approach of easy-to-use digital banking, combined with offline touchpoints for those without smartphones, has contributed to driving financial inclusion in a market where more than 40% of adults remain unbanked.

In 2023, PalmPay announced a major milestone of reaching 30 million registered users on its smartphone apps and 1.1 million businesses in its network of mobile money agents and retail merchants. A third of PalmPay customers report that the platform was their first-ever financial account.

PalmPay has quickly grown to become a market leader in Nigeria thanks to its user-friendly interface, reliable transactions, and focus on driving market share through fee-free transfers and promotions. PalmPay processes 15 million transactions on its consumer app daily and maintains a 99.5% transaction success rate.

To achieve this scale in a market where 10% transaction failure rates were common, the company built out its payment infrastructure, channel integrations and transaction routing systems. In addition to its consumer wallet, PalmPay offers services to businesses that leverage the PalmPay platform via its suite of POS machines, APIs and checkout solutions.

"It's an honour for PalmPay to be recognised by CNBC and Statista as one of the World's Top Fintech Companies," said Sofia Zab, Global CMO, "This recognition validates our unique approach to financial services and our commitment to driving financial inclusion. We are actively expanding PalmPay's reach and offerings, ensuring more people have access to essential financial services and promoting economic development in emerging markets"

PalmPay operates in several key markets across Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana and Tanzania, with plans to expand further in the region and other emerging markets. The company has global HQs in China and London.

Good news for motorists as fuel prices decrease

Location: News

Good news for motorists as fuel prices decrease

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has announced a decrease in prices for all grades of fuel for July, bringing much needed relief to consumers.

This is the second month in succession that a fuel price decrease has been implemented.

The fuel prices for July are adjusted as follows:

  • Petrol 93 (ULP and LRP): R1,05 decrease.
  • Petrol 95 (ULP and LRP): 99c decrease.
  • Diesel (0.05% sulphur): 30c decrease.
  • Diesel (0.005% sulphur): 24c decrease.
  • Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale): 18c decrease.
  • Single Maximum National Retail Price for illuminating Paraffin: 24c decrease.
  • Maximum LP Gas Retail Price: 22c decrease

In a statement, the department attributed the decrease in prices to several factors in the international market.

“The average Brent Crude oil price decreased from 82.98 US Dollars (USD) to 82.24 USD per barrel, during the period under review. The main contributing factors are the increased production by the US and other non-OPEC countries amid slow economic growth globally.

“The average international product prices of petrol decreased following the lower Brent Crude oil prices during the period under review. The movement in product prices has led to a lower contribution to the Basic Fuel Price (BFP) of petrol by 93.66 - 99.65 c/l, diesel by 17.55 – 23.80 c/l and illuminating paraffin by 16.87 cents per litre,” the department stated.

Furthermore, the Rand’s strength against the dollar also influenced prices.

“The Rand appreciated slightly, on average, against the US Dollar (from 18.46 to 18.44 Rand per USD) during the period under review when compared to the previous one. This led to lower contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of all products by about 1.50 cents per litre on all products,” the department added.

The adjusted prices are to take effect from Wednesday, 03 July 2024. – SAnews.gov.za

Driving Sustainable Fuel Distribution: bp South Africa Joins African Energy Week (AEW) 2024 as Platinum Sponsor

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

bp South Africa – a subsidiary of global energy major bp – returns to the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy conference (www.AECWeek.com/) – taking place November 4-8 in Cape Town – as a platinum sponsor. The company's return signals a commitment to engaging with industry and regional counterparts under a common goal of making energy poverty history.

In recent years, bp South Africa has made fresh investments in infrastructure development, local content empowerment and decarbonization initiatives under a broader agenda to expand fuel distribution and access. As Africa maximizes the development and use of its oil and gas resources to meet industrialization targets, improving partnerships with committed investors such as bp South Africa becomes imperative.

AEW: Invest in African Energy is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

bp South Africa has a strong history of providing fuel and related products to South Africa, having invested in importation, refining and distribution for over 100 years.

The company announced a five-year $1 billion investment package to enhance its operations in South Africa, including the modernization of its 50% owned SAPREF refinery in Durban in June 2023. The aim is to enable the 180,000 barrels per day refinery to produce low sulfur diesel, in line with the firm's new low carbon energy specification for environmental sustainability. Additionally, bp South Africa manages the Single Buoy Loading and Offloading Mooring facility, managing up to 85% of South Africa's crude oil imports. bp South Africa is also channeling significant investments into enhancing South Africa's port and storage infrastructure with the firm operating six fuel storage terminals in-country.

Going forward, the company is enhancing fuel distribution to meet the growing demand of petroleum products through the expansion of its retail business in South Africa. The company has over 500 branded service stations across South Africa. bp South Africa is also transforming the country's workforce through investments in local empowerment. In August 2023, the company invested R58 million to stimulate black-owned businesses with a target to have 70% of its service stations operated by black dealers by 2025.

Under the theme, Energy Growth through an Enabling Environment, AEW: Invest in African Energy will feature bp South Africa in high-level panel discussions and exclusive networking sessions, spotlighting the company's investment endeavours, steadfast commitment and strategic vision to propel Africa's energy industry forward.

“To make energy poverty history by 2030, Africa needs new investment in refining and distribution. bp South Africa is making great strides in this area under efforts to accelerate industrialization and fuel access in South Africa,” stated NJ Ayuk, the Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

AEW: Invest in African Energy serves as the largest event of its kind in Africa. Uniting African presidents, government, and national companies with global investors, project developers and technology providers, the event drives investment across the entire value chain. This year's edition takes place in Cape Town. Visit www.AECWeek.com for more information.

From Sustainability to Personalisation – Mid-year Retail Trends 2024

Location: News
Smollan

Reaching any midpoint, whether it's to catch one's breath on a ultra-marathon to gear up for the next stretch, or a project team reflecting on their progress and making necessary modifications – it's all about positioning for success. So too a mid-year retail check-in offers valuable insights into some of the latest developments shaping how retailers connect with consumers and drive innovation in the second half of this year.

Overview | Global & Local

The rise and rise of ecommerce, the integration of online and offline, platforming sustainability, contactless and convenient quick and easy payment options, price-sensitive pricing strategies and building customer loyalty – dominated the past six months.

So too, and no surprises here, but the broader classification of the consumer is changing yet again. If 2023 was the year of the resilient consumer, it seems that 2024 is seeing the year of the empowered consumer. Mastercard Data & Services [May 2024] reported that despite rising interest rates, inflation and the threat of a recession, consumers still confidently spent in 2023. This year however, consumers are carefully prioritising resources – with many people worldwide now looking for more deals and discounts to carefully balance their household budgets. Technology is also playing a bigger role in bringing innovation and efficiency to retailers and consumers, reflecting a more concerted shift towards a customer-centric and digitally driven retail landscape.

“Don't blink was my pennies worth at our trends check in November 2023,” said Mike Smollan, Chief Growth Officer, Smollan. “We've seen the rapid changes this year, from powerful tactical retail that has global brands amping up the flavour and integration experience for consumers. To local shifts in South Africa for example, with 61% of Gen Zs finding their feet and telling us via a recent Trade Intelligence report, that social media influencers are their best source of information when it comes to shopping. It's about meeting consumers wherever, whenever, and however they prefer to shop, and being cognisant of and embracing the shift to empowered consumerism.”

Global retail examples always provide a relevant yardstick to illustrate these shifting dynamics on a larger scale. Take Walmart for example who despite relatively little store growth, has maintained its number one ranking with a robust online marketplace and a range of new financial resources for shoppers. Costco expanded its warehouse format this year to a range of countries while Ikea is reinventing, by opening smaller-format stores around the world.

So too, the ecommerce world continues to baffle the brain – with relative newbie Temu topping US$5 billion in sales in 2023, just one year after they launched. With Statista reporting that their app has been downloaded over 52 million times as of May this year.

A wild ride and evolving storyline as we watch the disruption of this sector.

Closer to home, Shoprite South Africa (SA) have adapted in 2024 to serve customers who want more promotions, combo deals and collective buying. They also noted that their customers are switching to private labels. Furthermore, they have expanded their premium stores and on-demand delivery services, as well as venturing into mobile services and financial offerings. On the ecommerce front Tech Safari, reporting on Amazon's entry into SA in May this year, have suggested a possible pricing war benefitting consumers with faster deliveries, more products and better support. This space in the spotlight from now until year end and beyond, with competition on the up as Takealot, in response to Amazon's entry, launched a free delivery service with a monthly subscription.

At A Glance | Four Trends

Accelerated ways to enable retailers to anticipate, experiment, adapt and satisfy consumers, even before they are aware of them, will be the golden thread. With Forbes identifying four evolving trends for the second half of the year:

Sustainability

Customers want organisations to step up and show proof of their eco stance however they have “green fatigue” and are quickly on the scent of businesses that are simply ‘greenwashing'.

AI

This is constantly evolving and retailers need to use AI to improve efficiencies and processes, and balance this with a human touch.

Personalised Communication

Consumers want messages tailored to them and their purchasing behaviour and not to be bombarded with general marketing messages. Shifting tactics from purely transactional to empathetic.

Social Commerce

CRM Essentials showed that 37% of consumers trust influencers more than brands. This year social commerce and creator economies present a perfect symbiotic relationship as brands are now more focused on telling stories on social platforms that conclude with a commerce moment.
