Hawks seize cocaine worth R8 million

The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) Provincial Head, Major General Lesetja Senona, has welcomed the seizure of 20 cocaine bricks that were destined for the Free State.

This as Hawks members from the Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit seized the cocaine bricks worth R8 million at an industrial park near Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday.

The officers had received information about a truck that was carrying a chemical crop sprayer tractor from Durban Harbour heading to the Free State province.

“A disruptive operation was swiftly conducted, and members proceeded to the said industrial park.

“The said truck was traced and found stationary. A search was conducted and members found 20 bricks of cocaine hidden inside the chemical sprayer bin. A detailed statement was obtained from the driver and no arrest has been made at this stage. The investigation continues,” said the Hawks in a statement on Thursday.

City of Johannesburg, City Power ordered to pay Eskom debt

City of Johannesburg, City Power ordered to pay Eskom debt

Eskom has obtained a court judgement against the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and City Power for the payment of their R1.073 billion debt.

According to Eskom, the city and its local power utility have been defaulting on their account since October last year.

“When the matter was heard on 4 June 2024, the total amount owed to Eskom by CoJ/City Power was R3.4 billion.

“The city in response to Eskom’s application, brought a counterclaim against Eskom for R3.4 billion alleging potential over-billing and that as a result it has applied an automatic set-off against Eskom electricity account.

“Furthermore, the court dismissed the counterclaim by the city with costs, consequently dismissing the automatic set-off claim.

“Eskom has written a letter to COJ/City Power demanding payment of the full amount of R3.4 billion by 21 June 2024 and we hope they will respect the court decision and settle all outstanding debts to Eskom,” the national power utility said.

Last month, Eskom said it had been left with “no choice” but to approach the courts to have the debt paid.

“The debt owed by City Power has reached unprecedented levels, exacerbating Eskom’s already strained financial situation.

“This dire situation not only undermines Eskom’s financial sustainability but also threatens its ability to maintain essential infrastructure, invest in new technologies and meet the growing energy demands of the province,” Eskom said. – SAnews.gov.za

Condolences for retired judges

Condolences for retired judges

The office of the Judge President of KwaZulu-Natal has sent its condolences to the families of two retired judges who passed away recently.

Judges Nic Van Der Reyden and Sham Gyanda passed away this month.

Judge Van Der Reyden died last Wednesday, 12 June 2024 after spending at least 30 years in the legal fraternity and retired in 2010.

“Judge Van Der Reyden will be remembered for his abiding decency and humility…a true salt of the earth. The Judges of the KwaZulu-Natal Division extend their sincere condolences to his wife Dain, his son Nicholas and daughter Marijke and to the wider family and loved ones,” the office said.

Judge Gyanda died on Monday, 17 June 2024 after having spent some 40 years as a thriving advocate and, subsequently, a member of the judiciary.

He retired in 2020 due to ill health.

“He was a valued member of the bench, a trusted colleague and a friend to all. Both at the Bar and on the bench, in addition to sound advice, he always had a kind word and a smile for all who sought his counsel and guidance and if the occasion permitted, a joke, sometimes naughty and sometimes wicked, would be added in.

“We remember our brother with fondness. The Judges of the KwaZulu-Natal Division send their heartfelt condolences to his widow, Shireen, his children Kajal, Sahil and Alka and to the wider family,” the office said. – SAnews.gov.za

IEC confirms attempted unauthorised entry at its Gauteng warehouse

IEC confirms attempted unauthorised entry at its Gauteng warehouse

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has confirmed an incident of attempted unauthorised entry at its Gauteng provincial warehouse by unknown persons on Tuesday night.

The Electoral Commission expands its footprint of storage sites ahead of each election to ensure the storage of electoral supplies as close as possible to points of use.

Following the conclusion of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, material is rolled back for storage and safekeeping at a centralised facility.

During the roll back of material from a local storage site in the inner city in the City of Johannesburg, a group of persons interfered with the handling of materials and subsequently followed the truck used to transport the material back to the provincial warehouse.

On arrival at the warehouse, the group attempted to forcefully gain unauthorised entry to the warehouse.

“The commission can confirm that nothing was taken from the warehouse,” the Commission said in a statement.

The Electoral Commission thanked the South African Police Service for their swift response, which ensured the safety of the staff of the Commission and the integrity of the stored materials.

World leaders congratulate President Ramaphosa

Leaders around the world have rallied behind President Cyril Ramaphosa and offered their congratulations after his inauguration as President of South Africa for a second term, on Wednesday.

Yesterday, international and local guests filled the Union Buildings’ Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre in Pretoria to witness President Ramaphosa take his oath of office.

This, after he was re-elected to serve for a second term on Friday last week at the first sitting of the National Assembly since the highly contested elections in May where he won 283 votes, against Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema who received 44.

United States Ambassador Reuben Brigety congratulated Cyril Ramaphosa on his inauguration as the President of South Africa.

“Witnessing your vibrant democracy is an honour,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Speaking to SAnews yesterday, the diplomat described the Presidential inauguration as “historic” and wished the seventh administration all the best as it works for the good of the nation.

Meanwhile, United States President Joe Biden applauded President Ramaphosa on his re-election as President of South Africa.

President Biden commended all the political parties for working together to form a government of national unity (GNU).

“I also send my warm wishes to the people of South Africa. This year – as South Africa celebrates 30 years of all citizens having the right to vote – they have demonstrated the enduring power of government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

“I look forward to the United States and South Africa continuing our work together, to expand economic opportunity, invest in clean energy solutions, and demonstrate that democracy delivers,” President Biden added.

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who attended the swearing-in ceremony, took to X to wish South Africa’s First Citizen all the best as he leads the new administration.

“Today, I had the immense honour of attending the Presidential inauguration of His Excellency, President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“Congratulations, President Ramaphosa, on this remarkable achievement. It is a privilege to be part of this historical event and I look forward to working with you for the continued strength and unity between our nations,” he wrote.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated President Ramaphosa on his re-election.

“Warm congratulations, Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa on your re-election as the President of the Republic of South Africa. I look forward to working with you to further strengthen the India-South Africa strategic partnership,” said the Prime Minister of India.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with President Ramaphosa to congratulate him on his re-election.

“The President expressed hope that Russia and South Africa would continue their joint work to further strengthen their strategic partnership across the board. Vladimir Putin also sent a congratulatory telegram to Cyril Ramaphosa,” his Office said on his official website.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu also extended his warm congratulations to the President on his re-election.

He applauded South Africans on the peaceful and successful conduct of the General Elections.

“While wishing President Ramaphosa a successful term in office, President Tinubu calls for the strengthening of bilateral ties between Nigeria and South Africa as strategic partners in Africa for the overall advancement of the continent,” Special Adviser to the President, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, added. – SAnews.gov.za

Nigeria-SA relations critical for Africa’s success

President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasised that understanding and partnership between South Africa and Nigeria is critical for the success of the African continent.

The President was speaking following a bilateral meeting between him and his Nigerian counterpart, President Bola Tinubu in Tshwane, on the back of the Presidential Inauguration held on Wednesday.

“[F]or me what matters most is to be able to have very good economic links with Nigeria. The two countries – South Africa and Nigeria – are very important in our continent and when the two countries work together, which we are, and we do things together, it benefits Africa.

“It is the two countries that are among the pillars of our continent and I’m particularly pleased that we support each other internationally in various fora, the UN [and other] multi-lateral institutions. Nigeria and South Africa are essentially joined at the hip and we want to engender good economic and trade relations between our two countries to address the challenges that our two countries face,” President Ramaphosa said.

On the domestic front, the President said the African continent has received South Africa’s Government of National Unity positively.

“We’ve set up a Government of National Unity and I’m particularly pleased that the African continent has responded very positively to the news that we will continue stabilising politics of our country. But more importantly, through the Government of National Unity, we’re setting a very strong foundation for economic growth and to be able to attract investments,” he said.

Tinubu – who attended the inauguration held on Wednesday – said discussions between the two heads of government mainly related to the economy.

“I’m here to congratulate my brother for putting together a very impressive outing – particularly for the Government of National Unity to stabilise the politics. That is coming at a very challenging time for the rest of us in Africa to really come up with collaborative economics that will help our downtrodden and vulnerable people,” said President Tinubu.

Wednesday’s inauguration which saw Ramaphosa inaugurated for a second term in office, follows on the 29 May 2024, National and Provincial Elections. The results of the elections produced no outright majority winner, requiring the leaders of different formations to work together in taking the country forward.

GNU to advance the interest of all South Africans

The Government of National Unity is keen on advancing the interest of all South Africans while also creating employment, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday.

“We want to create jobs. We are going to get everyone in the Government of National Unity to create jobs. I am going to make sure that it happens,” the President said in his address to the crowds gathered on the South Lawns of the Union Buildings.

This after taking his Oath of Office as President, marking the advent of the seventh administration.

In his address to those gathered at the South Lawns, the President said the Government of National Unity (GNU) will advance the interests of all South Africans.

“Today we are opening a new chapter in the life of our country. We are going to have a government of national unity where we are going to work together united so that we can advance your interests. Let us not be afraid of what this government of national unity is going to be all about.”

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo administered the President’s oath during Wednesday’s inauguration ceremony.

President Ramaphosa also called on all political parties in the GNU to join hands in advancing the interests of all South Africans.

“The people of South Africa did not give one political party power to rule this country, the people of South Africa wanted a Government of National Unity to rule this country,” President Ramaphosa said.

Many ordinary South Africans turned out to witness the inauguration ceremony attended by the country’s former Presidents as well as members of the international community.

Government of national unity provides opportunity to improve lives of citizens

Government of national unity provides opportunity to improve lives of citizens

Gender activist, Dr Lesley Ann Foster, has expressed hope that the government of national unity will provide an opportunity for political parties to collaborate in addressing South Africa’s unemployment, slow economic growth and inequalities.

“This is a very significant moment. I feel quite emotional about it…We have had so much negativity and so many challenges that we have been facing that this gives us a ray of hope for change that will take us forward as a country,” Foster told SAnews on Wednesday at the Union Buildings.

Foster who is the founder and executive director of non-governmental organisation (NGO) Masimanyane Women's Rights International made these remarks ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria.

“We are excited about the possibility that this new administration [brings].  The most important thing about the government of national unity is that it is not about a particular party but about national unity. How do we bring all these people together to bring about progress and development? The most critical thing is about what can take the country forward,” she said.

Foster said the presence of dignitaries at the inauguration signifies that the international community honours and respects South Africa.

“They are coming to pay their respects to our new President and that is very significant for us that they are here to say we stand with you; we support you.”

With the inauguration representing the beginning of the seventh administration, Foster called for government to address corruption, unemployment and gender inequality.

“Government needs to deal decisively with corruption. They also need to work on the economic policies and look at how they can create jobs, particularly for the youth and the unemployed of our country; there is so many of them.

“I work in the gender sector. We have a huge challenge to address gender-based violence in this country. We have had very strong political commitments from President Ramaphosa in his previous administration. We are praying that it will happen again.”

She added that she was part of a collective of women that have written a statement to all political parties requesting that they address gender equality issues in this administration.

“We want them to address gender equality. We want the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide to be put in place. We want issues on empowerment and our status in society to be addressed

“South African women still have very low status, even though they has been massive progress, we still have low status. They need to address that because until we are an equal society, poverty is going to be the big issue.

“We have a big problem around poverty, food insecurity and water insecurity. They have to address those issues very decisively because we are sitting on a smouldering peg and we can have an explosion at any time from the youth because they are dissatisfied,” Foster said.

This year’s inauguration coincides with South Africa’s celebration of 30 years of freedom and democracy.

NATJOINTS satisfied with security measures for inauguration

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) says it is satisfied that all security measures that have been put in place ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration ceremony are sufficient and adequate.

NATJOINTS has played a pivotal role in the run-up to this momentous occasion for the country.

this from ensuring that the 2024 National and Provincial Elections took place in a safe and secure environment, where citizens from all walks of life were able to cast their vote, to securing the first sitting of the National Assembly and the nine Provincial Legislatures.

“This is a clear demonstration of our country’s law enforcements capabilities and competence.  The smooth running of these events without any disruptions and with minimal incidents reported throughout the country during this period, bears testament that the security forces of this country are fully equipped, are equal to task and stand ready to prevent, combat and enforce the law,” NATJOINTS said in a statement.

“Our integrated NATJOINTS plan is designed to focus on venue security, route, transport, traffic control, sea, land, airport, border, accommodation security as well as crowd management capabilities.

“This plan involving various government departments led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), South African National Defence Force and the State Security Agency is currently being implemented in all corners of the Gauteng province where the Presidential Inauguration is taking place.

“We have heightened police visibility, where all operational units are on the ground to ensure that we assert the authority of the State,” NATJOINTS said.

NATJOINTS said it is leaving nothing to chance and has already begun to deal with criminality, with the arrest of a foreign national at the accreditation centre on Monday.

At the time, the Zimbabwean national attempted to obtain accreditation.

“Our integrated systems immediately detected that this individual was using an identity document of a deceased person. The suspect has been charged with fraud and contravention of the Immigration Act. He is in police custody.

“We have our high, medium and low risk units all deployed to execute their respective mandate within the confines of the law,” NATJOINTS said.

Traffic officials from Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg Metro Police Departments have been deployed at all key points to direct traffic and execute road safety measures.

They are working closely with members of National Traffic officials who have been communicating on the road closures and alternative routes.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has also deployed its crime prevention officers and Public Order Policing units to police the large crowds that are expected to attend these celebrations.

“We are patrolling, conducting stop and searches and roadblocks to ensure we tighten security and deal with any criminality,” NATJOINTS said.

Members of the public wishing to attend the Presidential Inauguration will be able to park their vehicles at the Tshwane Showgrounds and ride a free bus to the Union Buildings.

There will be no private vehicle access to the union buildings. The park and ride shuttles will commence at 3am to 06:30am this morning.

The public walking in will have access to the Union Buildings South Lawns through a security checkpoint.

All attendees are encouraged to conduct themselves responsibly and in an orderly manner.

The following items are prohibited:

* Dangerous weapons such as firearms and sharp weapons.

* No traditional weapons, including traditional spears and knobkerries will be allowed.

* No alcoholic beverages.

* No cooler boxes.

* No fireworks.

* No glass bottles.

* No drones.

Members of the public are reminded that before entering the South Lawns, they will be searched and anyone found with these items will be turned away.

Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult and parents who wish to bring their young children along must ensure strict supervision.

The Department of Social Development has set up a tent to reunite children who have separated from their guardians during the event.

The SAPS has also established a Venue Operations Centre (the VOC), where all safety and security responses will be coordinated from.

Emergency medical services also form part of the VOC and are on standby to attend to any medical emergencies.

The area around the Union Buildings has been declared a restricted no-fly zone for 20 nautical miles until Wednesday evening at 16:00pm.

“Our air support and air space security task teams, which includes the SAPS Airwing, the South African Air Force and the South African National Defence Force are monitoring the airspace to ensure that no unauthorised drones and aircrafts enter the restricted air space.

“As the NATJOINTS, we stand ready to stamp the authority of the State and to deal with any lawlessness. No disruptions and unbecoming behaviour will be tolerated.

“We continue to urge members of the public to refrain from sharing unverified information in any form of pictures, audios, or videos that incite violence and create disunity.  Our intelligence communities continue to monitor various platforms for inflammatory messages and statements,” it said.

NATJOINTS warned that those who are found to be engaging themselves with online mobilisation for unrest and violence will be charged under the Cybercrime Act 19 of 2020. – SAnews.gov.za

International community looks forward to working with new administration

International and local guests who have travelled far and wide for the Presidential inauguration have started to fill the Union Buildings Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre to witness President-elect Cyril Ramaphosa take the oath of office.

The Union Buildings is a hive of activity with ordinary citizens and national and foreign dignitaries, including Heads of State and government.

Top politicians, including party leaders have already arrived, along with former Presidents who are expected to join the proceedings.

The Union Buildings is awash with South African flags for the occasion, as emotions run high for some attendees who are here to observe the ushering in of the seventh administration since the dawn of democracy.

President-elect Ramaphosa was re-elected to serve for the second term on Friday last week at the first sitting of the National Assembly since the highly contested elections of 29 May where he won 283 votes, against the Economic Freedom Fighters’ leader Julius Malema who received 44 votes.

The Union Buildings, which serve as the official seat of the South African government and houses the offices of the President of South Africa, evokes a sense of excitement and hope.

Diplomatic relations

The United States of America’s Ambassador to South Africa, Reuben Brigety described the Presidential inauguration as “historic”.

“It’s a great honour to be here on this historic day for the inauguration of Cyril Ramaphosa and the beginning of the seventh administration,” he told SAnews on Wednesday.

Brigety stated that the relationship between the United States and South Africa is strong - adding that he hopes to emphasise several things even more this year.

The ambassador expressed anticipation for the 'Atlanta Phambili' initiative, aimed at advancing the positive bilateral relationship between the United States and South Africa.

“It will take advantage of the rich ecosystem that the US city, Atlanta, brings; to advancing our affirmative agenda at everything from healthcare, trade and investment, job creation and so on. So, we wish the seventh administration all the best as it works for the good of the nation of the people of South Africa,” he said.

Meanwhile, Swedish Ambassador to South Africa, Hakan Juholt, expressed his excitement about attending the President-elect’s swearing-in ceremony.

“We were together with the people of South Africa fighting for democracy and now we’re together celebrating democracy.”

He believes that the solutions to today’s diverse problems can be found through collaboration between and within nations.

“This new coalition that we’re looking forward to meeting... This is something that the rest of the world will look into and learn from. This is an exciting day, and we think, from Sweden, an old democracy, that South Africa has shown how mature this young democracy is. We’re very proud to be close friends to the people of South Africa,” he said in an interview with SAnews.

Measures in place and programme of the day

A stone’s throw away, at the South Lawns, crowds are still pouring into the capital to welcome their new President.

Some hundreds of law enforcement officers are stationed in Pretoria with roads in the centre of the city locked down.

With the extensive security measures put in place, the ceremony will feature musical performances from the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra and a congratulatory praise poem by Ntombhi Ya Mutsonga.

The South Africa National Defence Forces’ Chaplain General, Brigadier Ernest Thabo Masweu, will lead interfaith prayers.

President-elect Ramaphosa is expected to take the stage just after 11 am.

The guests will join in the national anthem followed by the salute flight and 21-round gun salute before the President-elect takes his oath and delivers the much-anticipated inaugural speech. – SAnews.gov.za

Government of National Unity: A moment of profound significance

Location: News

Government of National Unity: A moment of profound significance

19 June 2024 is by no means an ordinary day in the collective landscape of South Africa. With President Cyril Ramaphosa having taken his Oath of Office, marking the start of the seventh administration, the country is now firmly in the fold of the creation of a Government of National Unity.

The recently concluded 29 May National and Provincial Elections, while having been conducted in a manner that has been deemed free and fair by the South African Human Rights Commission, among others, demonstrated the maturity of South Africa's democracy since its early steps in 1994. Even though the outcomes of the first democratic election made clear the resounding message of the masses, who had long battled for the right of political and societal agency, a Government of National Unity was formed to help the fragile populace to navigate the treacherous waters of a nation that was new to inclusivity.

While this year's General Election results produced no outright majority winner, the requirement for leaders of different formations to work together is not too unsimilar to what the country had to do to find its way at the inception of democracy. Today, leaders are required to carve a new path, one where cooperation amongst parties with different views have come together, and continue to do so, united in the single purpose of providing citizens with services that are aimed at improving their quality of life and building a sense of national solidarity.

Addressing the public in his inaugural speech, and essentially the world at large who had been following developments in the country, President Ramaphosa on Wednesday said the formation of the Government of National Unity is a moment of profound significance.

“It is the beginning of a new era,” President Ramaphosa said at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

He said the Government of National Unity requires a common mission, which is anchored in safeguarding national unity, peace, stability, inclusive economic growth, non-racialism and non-sexism.

“Through the ballots that they have cast, the people of South Africa have made plain their expectation that the leaders of our country should work together."

President Ramaphosa said the people of South Africa have directed their representatives to put aside animosity and dissent, to abandon narrow interests and to pursue together only that which benefits the nation.

“As leaders, as political parties, we are called upon to work in partnership towards a growing economy, better jobs, safer communities and a government that works for its people.”

President Ramaphosa said from across the political spectrum, parties have answered that call.

“Understanding that no party can govern alone and make laws alone, these parties have agreed to work in partnership, to employ their talents for the good of the country and the progress of its people.

“Together, they have resolved to establish a government of national unity to pursue a common programme of fundamental and lasting change.

“As the leaders of this country came together in a Government of National Unity 30 years ago to forge a common future and build a united nation, the parties in the government of national unity of today have agreed to work together to address the most pressing challenges before our nation,” President Ramaphosa said.

President Ramaphosa said the parties have adopted a Statement of Intent, in which they have committed to pursue rapid, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, to create a more just society by tackling poverty, to safeguard the rights of workers, to stabilise government and to build state capacity and to pursue a foreign policy based on human rights, solidarity and peace.

“As South Africans, we must each do what we can to achieve this mission. We will invite all parties, civil society, labour, business and other formations to a National Dialogue on the critical challenges facing the nation,” the President said.

President Ramaphosa said the parties have made a commitment to invest in South Africa’s people through quality education and health care, to address crime and corruption, to strengthen social cohesion and build a united nation and the will of the people shall be done without any doubt or question.

“The voters of South Africa did not give any single party the full mandate to govern our country alone.

“We will seek, as we have done at so many important moments in our history, to forge a social compact to realise the aspirations of our National Development Plan.

“As individuals, as families, as communities and in our many formations, let us draw on our every strength to turn our dream for a better South African into reality,” President Ramaphosa said. – SAnews.gov.za

‘We have heard you’ – President

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged all political parties to put their differences aside and work together, as South Africans, through the ballot, have spoken and made clear their needs for the seventh administration.

Ramaphosa was delivering his first speech as President and leader of the seventh administration, following his inauguration at the Union Buildings, in Tshwane, on Wednesday.

President Ramaphosa – to rousing applause – emphasised that South Africans have been unequivocal about what they now seek from leaders and for South Africa.

“[The] people of South Africa have stressed that they are impatient with political bickering and the endless blame game among politicians and political parties. They want us to put their needs and aspirations first and they want us to work together for the sake of our country.

“Today I stand before you as your humble servant to say we have heard you,” he said from the amphitheatre at the Union Buildings.

The President outlined key objectives that South Africans have voiced - including stimulating a growing and transformed economy, tackling crime, housing and infrastructure.

With these in mind, President Ramaphosa pledged that during his time in office, he will be a President for all.

“Today, I make a solemn commitment to be a President for all South Africans and not just some South Africans; to defend our Constitution and protect our democracy; to work with all those who share the dream of a better life for all; to care for the poor and the vulnerable, and to support all those who are in need; and to make our country stronger, more resilient, more equal and united,” the President affirmed.

South Africa will be led by a Government of National Unity following the National and Provincial Elections held on 29 May 2024 in which no political party received a clear majority.

“In their multitude, in voices that are many and diverse, the people of South Africa have voted and made known their wishes, their concerns and their expectations.

“We accept and respect the results of the elections and we once again say the people have spoken. Their will shall be done without any doubt or question,” President Ramaphosa said. – SAnews.gov.za

Motsoaledi welcomes 18-year sentence of Pakistani national linked to passport-related crimes

Motsoaledi welcomes 18-year sentence of Pakistani national linked to passport-related crimes

The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has welcomed the sentencing of a Pakistani national, Arfan Ahmed, who was convicted of corruption and bribing Home Affairs officials at the Krugersdorp Home Affairs office for R45 000.

According to the department, Ahmed was apprehended in a sting operation involving the Counter Corruption Branch of Home Affairs, the Hawks, and the Police Crime Intelligence at the Home Affairs office in Krugersdorp in March 2022.

“In the aftermath of his arrest, his home was searched, where multiple passports which were not supposed to be there were found. For this offence, he is serving eight years. As the kingpin of the passport photo swap, the Krugersdorp Regional Court recently sentenced him to another 10 years imprisonment.

“He is, therefore, serving 18 years for his involvement in the overall passport syndicate activities,” the statement read.

The department stated that the passport syndicate aims to undermine the country’s laws by fraudulently obtaining South African passports for Pakistani nationals, who did not have a legal right to possess these documents.

Ahmed is said to have been working with some corrupt officials of Home Affairs in a network that spanned Gauteng, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Mpumalanga provinces.

Meanwhile, Home Affairs said they have already fired the 12 officials who enabled his scheme after the conclusion of their disciplinary processes.

Motsoaledi said he welcomed the development and was impressed that the courts are sending a strong message that crime does not pay.

“We’ve been waiting patiently for the sentencing of this kingpin for his role in the Krugersdorp passport syndicate. This is an illustration that in our unflinching commitment to uproot fraud, corruption and all sorts of crimes bedevilling our country, we make sure that kingpins and their 'lieutenants' face the full might of the law.

“Passport fraud is not a victimless crime. Every single South African is a victim because we are now forced to apply for visas when we visit countries such as the United Kingdom. This was not the case before syndicates like these denigrated our passports. We will, therefore, have no mercy to anybody whatsoever, Home Affairs official or outsider, who gets involved in these dastardly acts. We are doing so to protect the interests of all South Africans,” the Minister said.

He has since urged all citizens to immediately report such acts of crime to the nearest police station or report them to Home Affairs officials and to refrain from such criminal acts of selling identity.

People who want to report Home Affairs-related crimes can call the national anti-corruption hotline on the toll-free number 0800 701 701 or send an email to report.corruption@dha.gov.za. – SAnews.gov.za

Government set to engage citizens on service delivery

Government set to engage citizens on service delivery

As government continues to celebrate 30 Years of Freedom and Democracy, citizens will be provided with an opportunity to engage government on service delivery through various activations that will be held throughout the country.

As a symbol of the country’s democratic journey, a bus will be used in the coming months by different departments to hold community engagements objectively aimed at fostering dialogue and increase citizen participation in shaping government’s service delivery programmes.

Addressing the occasion for the handover of the freedom and democracy bus, Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga explained that the term "bus" is short for omnibus, which means “for everyone."

“It often symbolises taking a journey.  So it fits well with the idea that we should all embark on a journey to commemorate the arrival of democracy and freedom. This bus will travel the length and breadth of our country until April next year, spreading the message of what the government has delivered to bring a better life to the people of South Africa over the past 30 years,” Chikunga said in Centurion on Monday.

The Minister handed over the freedom and democracy bus to Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni.

“The bus will be managed by Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) but available to all government departments for various campaigns. As you will see when you board the bus, it is fully kitted out to ensure that public servants continue their work while travelling on the long road.

“We urge all government departments to take ownership of the bus, as we will also do as the Department of Transport. The first assignment will be this weekend when it will be used as part of the Youth Month activities.

“As a country, we have emerged unified from the recent elections and we continue to put people first as we celebrate 30 years of democracy and freedom. From the dawn of democracy in 1994, to date we stand more committed to bring a better life to all citizens of this glorious nation,” Chikunga said.

The 27th of April 2024 marked 30 years since the advent of democracy in South Africa. This day marked a historic milestone in South Africa, as all adults were allowed to cast their votes, for the first time, a free and fair democratic election.

As part of commemorations for the “30 Years of Freedom” campaign, government will reflect on the nation’s history, celebrate its accomplishments, and inspire citizens to continue contributing to its progress. – SAnews.gov.za

Investing in public transport to enhance accessibility

Location: News

Investing in public transport to enhance accessibility

Government has invested a cumulative total of R69 billion in public transport, which was spent towards infrastructure and operations in an effort to enhance accessibility to public transport and mobility.

Addressing a media briefing on the state of the transport sector, Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, said a total of R55 billion was spent in 13 cities between 2006 and 2024.

This has translated into 131 stations; 253 kilometres of dedicated and bidirectional trunk routes; 302km of mixed traffic by-directional trunk routes, as well as 260km of two-way cycling, pedestrian, and non-motorised transport facilities.

In addition, 2 628 bus stops were built; 11 depots were constructed; 44 million passengers were carried per annum as of 2023/24. Integrated Public Transport Networks (IPTNs) are operating at 14 – 20 operational hours daily, with approximately 1 020 vehicles.

Eight cities are implementing initial phases and planning expansions to other areas that include Cape Town, Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, George, Polokwane, Nelson Mandela Bay, and Rustenburg.

“It must also be noted that 14 Vehicle Operating Companies have been established and contracted by municipalities to provide public transport services in IPTNs.

“The most important benefit has been the formalisation of informal taxi operators and their economic empowerment in the IPTN. The majority of these Vehicle Operating Centres are run by taxi operators," Chikunga said on Monday in Centurion.

Taxi industry

Government has continued to implement taxi industry reforms to improve the industry.

“To date, from a target of 135 894 old taxi vehicles to be scrapped, a total of 83 713 taxis have been scrapped and about R5.9 billion has been paid out to operators through the Taxi Recapitalisation Programme (TRP),” Chikunga said.

Moreover, the Department of Transport has committed to the various commercial projects for the taxi industry, which include the Taxi Broad-Based Ownership Structure, where the taxi industry owns 60% of the taxi scrapping entity, with 40% owned by a technical partner.

A Memorandum of Agreement has been signed between the parties.

Chikunga said the signing into law of the Economic Regulation of Transport Bill by the President will see the consolidation of the economic regulation of transport into a unified framework and policy.

“It aims to primarily promote the development of a competitive, efficient, and viable South African transport industry, contributing to economic growth and development.

“It will also promote the development of an integrated system of economic regulation for the transportation of passengers and goods through airports or ports and by road or rail; as well as promote efficiency, reliability, safety and performance in the management and operation of transport facilities and services, in accordance with recognised international standards and public demand,” she said.

The bill also seeks to establish appropriate institutional arrangements and procedures, which will support the consistent economic regulation of transport facilities and services.

It will also enhance transparency in the management of transport facilities and services.

Last year, the Department of Transport tabled at Cabinet the Draft National Public Transport Subsidy Policy.

“The basic principles of the public transport subsidy are to have a subsidy that is user-targeted, equitable and sustainable in the medium to long term. We have, irrespective of our challenges and constraints, managed to realise major milestones in the area of public transport, almost as much as we have progressed with improvements in the implementation of other mandates, and these have positively affected the lives of ordinary South Africans,” the Minister said.

Learner transport

Chikunga said the National Learner Transport Programme remains an important avenue towards easing mobility for learners, the provision of safe transport to educational centres, improved school attendance and academic performance.

“We have been able to implement that in 4 204 schools nationally. This programme is fully funded and provides a free service to learners with a budget allocation of R4.7 billion.

“The 2001 National Bicycle Programme, known as Shova Kalula, adds an important facility for the mobility of learners who do not fit the criteria for scholar transport. To date, 122 307 bicycles were distributed to learners as part of the National Learner Transport Policy,” Chikunga said.

Under the sixth administration, the Department of Transport distributed 32 307 bicycles nationally in all provinces, targeting underprivileged and rural learners. – SAnews.gov.za
