G20 Finance Ministers set to meet in US

The Group of Twenty (G20) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors are set to convene a two-day meeting on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Spring Meetings, taking place in the United States, later this month.

The G20 is an international forum of both developing and developed countries, which seeks to find solutions to global economic and financial issues.

This meeting is part of the Finance Track under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, which will gather Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of G20 member countries, invited countries, and international organisations to discuss global economic challenges, financial stability, and policies aimed at fostering economic growth.

South Africa’s G20 Presidency commenced on 1 December 2024 and will run until 30 November 2025. It is taking place under the theme: “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.”

The Finance Track is co-chaired by Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, and South African Reserve Bank Governor, Lesetja Kganyago.

G20 members include the world’s major economies, representing 85% of global GDP, 75% of international trade, and two-thirds of the world’s population.

The G20 comprises 19 countries (including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and the United States), the European Union, and since 2023, the African Union.

The two-day meeting will take place from 23-24 April 2025, in Washington, D.C.

Eskom, Exxaro sign agreement to reduce carbon emissions

Exxaro Resources and Eskom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on strategic initiatives, research, and projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality and facilitating the Just Transition.

According to a joint statement, this move is consistent with South Africa’s commitment to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, international environmental standards, and national regulatory frameworks.

“The agreement focuses on jointly measuring, managing, and reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and potentially investing in innovative technologies to drive decarbonisation.

“It also emphasises inclusive and focused transition initiatives such as skills development, job creation in green sectors, and stakeholder engagement to ensure climate resilience,” the statement read.

In addition, the MoU, which was signed on Monday, includes provisions for data sharing and transparent reporting to track progress and ensure accountability.

Exxaro Resources CEO, Ben Magara, believes that this collaboration marks a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to enabling a Just Transition and building a climate-resilient and low-carbon future.

“By leveraging our deep experience in the diversified mining and energy solutions sectors, we aim to drive innovation that not only decarbonises and reduces air pollution in our operations but also delivers meaningful socio-economic benefits for the communities we serve.

“The collaboration with Eskom is important as we work to accelerate practical and scalable solutions that support South Africa’s energy security and environmental ambitions as part of our purpose of Powering Better lives in Africa and beyond,” Magara said.

Exxaro is a South Africa-based diversified resources company with a coal business and acquisitive growth prospects in minerals and energy.

The company stated that the initial focus of the collaboration will be to identify the necessary investments and stakeholders required to develop technology-based solutions for the challenges associated with the transition to a low-carbon economy.
This effort will align with the country’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP).

Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane said both organisations are committed to driving the transition to a more sustainable energy future while ensuring the country’s electricity supply remains secure.

“This initiative forms part of Eskom’s focus both in this country and internationally to identify the latest developments and strategies to reduce carbon emissions and other air pollutants,” Marokane added.

Meanwhile, Exxaro stated that it remains steadfast in advancing its Sustainable Growth and Impact strategy by embedding key Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) priorities into its operations.

The company is of the view that through partnerships such as this one, it is well-positioned to become carbon-neutral by 2050.
Meanwhile, Eskom’s Research, Testing & Development (RT&D) business unit will lead this partnership.

The RT&D is dedicated to finding technology solutions that can be applied primarily within the company to embrace innovation, enhance efficiency and improve operations, improvements related to emissions management, and greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement.

“Eskom remains focused on a balanced and diversified energy mix based on existing coal and nuclear and introducing gas for baseload power, as well as renewables, energy storage systems including battery energy storage systems and pumped hydro, to achieve overall security of supply and to meet South Africa’s growing electricity demand sustainably,” said the power utility. – SAnews.gov.za

Call for stricter bail measures for crimes against wildlife

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has called for stricter bail measures for repeat offenders and foreign nationals with no fixed address who are accused of crimes against wildlife.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is actively engaging with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and South African Police Service (SAPS) through platforms like the National Biodiversity Investigators Forum (NBIF) to enhance opposition to bail, particularly for repeat offenders and foreign nationals with no fixed address.

“These discussions focus on improving the quality of affidavits drafted by investigating officers to present stronger cases in court. The department is also sharing best-practice affidavits with investigators to ensure more effective bail opposition and is exploring options to secure funding for dedicated support to SAPS in these applications.

“Additionally, at the upcoming Environmental Management Inspectors (EMI) executive training in April 2025, the NPA will address bail-related issues, allowing for direct engagement with the Minister and other stakeholders,” the department said on Tuesday.

In February, Thomas Chauke, a 54-year-old Zimbabwean national, was convicted and sentenced in the Makhanda High Court to 110 years’ imprisonment for rhino poaching and wildlife-related crimes.

The Minister commended the SAPS, particularly the Stock Theft and Endangered Species (STES) Unit, for their meticulous investigation and dedication in securing this victory against rhino poaching and wildlife-related crimes.

“Chauke’s conviction on six counts of rhino poaching and wildlife-related offences, alongside three counts of escaping lawful custody, underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to combatting environmental crime.

“This landmark sentencing, coupled with these strategic interventions, sends a powerful message to those involved in illegal wildlife trafficking and environmental destruction,” the Minister said.

He applauded the collaborative efforts between the SAPS and the NPA, which ensured effective coordination and prosecution across multiple provinces, including the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and North West.

George reiterated his support for ongoing efforts to protect South Africa’s precious biodiversity and natural heritage, ensuring that perpetrators face the full might of the law. -SAnews.gov.za

Fugitive rhino poacher sentenced to 110 years' imprisonment

In a major breakthrough in the fight against rhino poaching and wildlife-related crimes, a 54-year-old Zimbabwean national and wanted fugitive, Thomas Chauke, also known as Sazu Nkambuya, has been convicted and sentenced to 110 years’ imprisonment by the Makhanda High Court.

This follows an extensive and meticulous investigation by detectives from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Head Office, Stock Theft and Endangered Species (STES) Unit.

Chauke was found guilty on six counts related to rhino poaching and wildlife related crimes, as well as three counts of escaping from lawful custody.

“The accused was a fugitive, wanted for multiple charges on rhino poaching and wildlife related cases in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal and North West. He was also linked to several cases, including armed robbery, rape and kidnapping," the South African Police Service (SAPS) said in a statement.

The SAPS said Chauke had previously been incarcerated at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Services, where he was serving five life sentences for violent crimes, including rape, armed, robbery and kidnapping. He escaped from custody on 9 December 2020, prompting further investigation and search efforts by STES.

Following his arrest in 2024, the STES team coordinated the centralisation of multiple dockets from various provinces and liaised with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), to ensure effective coordination and successful prosecution of the accused.

On 28 February 2025, Chauke pleaded guilty to all rhino poaching and wild life related cases, including three counts of escaping from lawful custody, and was sentenced to 110 years imprisonment by the Makhanda High Court.

"The STES team remains dedicated to safeguarding both wildlife and the community from individuals engaged in criminal activities and ensuring that those responsible are brought to book and held accountable," the SAPS said. – SAnews.gov.za

BMA Commissioner to monitor movements at Lebombo ahead of Easter weekend

The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato, will be on the ground to monitor the accelerated security control measures at the Lebombo port of entry before the Easter holidays.

As the third law enforcement service in the Republic, the BMA has also deployed drones and body-worn cameras for additional technological support.

Masiapato will monitor deployments and traveller movements.

Most of the ports not operating for 24 hours have adjusted their service hours for the Easter holidays.

“Commissioner Masiapato will be in Lebombo from 15 to 18 April 2025, while most travellers are exiting the country before the Easter holidays. Deputy Commissioner Jane Thupana will be in Beitbridge from 16 to 17 April 2025,” said the BMA in a statement.

Six to appear in court for various crimes

Six suspects are expected to appear in court soon on charges of the possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and drugs, say Gauteng police.

This comes after members of the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) executed a series of successful operations on Friday night leading to multiple arrests and significant seizures of illegal firearms, ammunition and drugs in Westbury and Eldorado Park.

“During routine foot patrols in Westbury, AGU members arrested a 31-year-old male for possession of an unlicensed firearm and 15 live rounds of ammunition. In a separate incident on the same patrol, a 26-year-old male was also arrested for possessing an unlicensed firearm and two live rounds of ammunition. Both arrests underscore the AGU's relentless commitment to maintaining safety in our communities,” said the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The AGU also received a tip-off regarding drug activities at a residence along Steytler Street in Westbury. Upon arrival, the AGU team found a 52-year-old female in possession of 14 tablets and four halves of suspected mandrax drugs, leading to her arrest for possession of drugs.

In the early hours on Saturday, AGU members acted on information regarding a male with an unlicensed firearm along Sneeuberg Street, Extension 2, in Eldorado Park. They gained entry to a B-section flat and arrested a man found with an unlicensed firearm and eight live rounds of ammunition.

Additionally, another suspect at the same location in a different flat, was apprehended for possessing 20 bags containing substances suspected to be khat.

At approximately 02:45, the AGU team conducted another operation at the B-section flats, arresting a male suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm and 16 live rounds of ammunition, following a tip-off.

The team was praised for their hard work which resulted in the confiscation of four unlicensed firearms, 41 live rounds of ammunition and two drug arrests with significant quantities of suspected drugs.

“The AGU remains steadfast in its mission to combat crime and protect our communities, urging residents to continue providing valuable information to support these efforts,” said the SAPS. – SAnews.gov.za

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says municipalities must rise to the occasion and be aware of the activities taking place in the spaces they rent out.

The Minister’s comments come as he visited various drug laboratories and a warehouse which were discovered and shut down by the Hawks in Mpumalanga.

“The spaces where this operation was carried out (industrial and residential areas) are indicative that municipalities have to rise to the occasion and be aware of the activities which take place in relation to the spaces they rent out,” the Minister said following his visit to the sites on Sunday.

The visit follows an operation carried out by a team comprising of among others, the Hawks in Secunda, Standerton K9, and the Standerton Crime Intelligence on 4 April.

“A search warrant was obtained and large quantities of liquid chemicals in drums, powder chemicals in sacks, machinery and equipment were found. It was confirmed that the building was used as a storage facility for illicit drug producing material,” the Minister said.

Three Mozambican nationals found at the scene were arrested; a fourth suspect who is also a Mozambican national was also arrested.

“All these individuals are illegal immigrants. Three vehicles were seized. Further investigation led us to a farm, where a clandestine drug lab was discovered, and a Mozambican couple was arrested - parents to one of the suspects arrested prior. Again, these individuals do not have the requisite papers to be in South Africa,” he said.

The combined value of items found was around R20 million.

All six suspects appearance in the Standerton Magistrate court on Monday, 07 April 2025.
Additionally, intelligence about two additional laboratories in the area were received. Search warrants were applied for and executed on 8 April 2025.

“The Investigation team comprising of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI/Hawks) Secunda, SANEB [South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau] head office, Standerton K9, Standerton Crime Intelligence, and private security visited a farm and discovered it was empty and then proceeded to a residential address.

"A tablet pressing machine, a disassembled machine worth over R2 million, petrol generator and 20 litre buckets full of finished powder products valued at over R28 million were found,” said the Minister.

Two South African males were arrested while a third suspect, handed himself in. They appeared in the Standerton Magistrates Court on 10 April 2025.

Several luxury vehicles were seized, including a Mercedes Benz and an amount of R3 689 200 was found in the boot of the Mercedes Benz. A white Isuzu van was found at another address and is in police custody.

“All suspects have since appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court; one suspect (South African) has been released but investigations are still underway. The eight suspects who are in custody will appear again for a formal bail hearing on the 25th of April 2025.

This whole operation is an indication that we need to increase our law enforcement capacity in order to achieve such results and more. This is one aspect which we as the SAPS [South African Police Service] are focused on,” the Minister explained.

He added that the police have prioritised tackling the drug trade and is looking at dismantling the entire value chain.

“Since August 2024, the SAPS have uncovered several clandestine drug laboratories, leading to significant seizures of illicit substances and manufacturing equipment.”

Among some of the drug busts made by police previously include the dismantling of a laboratory valued at R100 million was dismantled in Rietfontein, Tshwane, resulting in the arrest of a 39-year-old Mexican national in November last year.

In December 2024, a drug bust valued at R4.5 million was executed, uncovering machines used for drug production, though no suspects were found at the scene in Kibler Park, Johannesburg.

“The total estimated street value of the 800 kilograms of drugs that were destroyed on 7 March 2025 is in excess of R340 million. About a year ago, drugs worth R550 million were destroyed. In three years, various types of drugs worth R5.2 billion have been destroyed.

“As the SAPS, we have a constitutional duty to ensure that all South Africans are and feel safe. Drugs have a negative impact on our communities. They have an impact on the crime levels, they destroy young lives and the health of those who consume them,” he said.-SAnews.gov.za

The Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Tembisa Ndabeni, has announced the appointment of Vuyani Jarana as Chairperson for the Startup20 Engagement Group for South Africa’s Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency.

In a statement on Monday, the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) said it has been entrusted with leading South Africa’s Startup20 Engagement Group, one of the officially recognised G20 Engagement Groups.

As Chairperson, Jarana will lead Startup20’s strategic direction, appoint task force chairs, coordinate high-level meetings and events, and guide the development of the Startup20 Policy Communiqué, which will contribute to the official G20 Leaders’ Declaration.

The Minister also appointed 22 On Sloane as the Secretariat of the Startup20 Engagement Group for South Africa’s G20 Presidency.

Startup20 advocates for startups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) at the G20 level, developing policy recommendations to advance the global startup ecosystem and foster inclusive innovation.

“To support this effort, 22 On Sloane has been appointed as the Country Secretariat for Startup20 during South Africa’s G20 Presidency. Twenty-two (22) On Sloane is Africa’s largest startup campus, playing a pivotal role in advancing the startup and MSME ecosystem across the continent.

“Twenty-two (22) On Sloane serves as headquarters for the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) Africa, which is represented in 43 African countries, and as the country headquarters of GEN Global which has a presence in 180 countries globally aimed at supporting entrepreneurs to start and scale,” the department said.

As Secretariat, 22 On Sloane will support Jarana to coordinate and manage all Startup20 activities in South Africa, including stakeholder engagements, task force operations, international collaboration efforts, policy drafting, and logistical delivery of the Startup20 agenda.

The organisation will also facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues and policy consultations to ensure that Africa’s entrepreneurial voice is firmly embedded in the ensuing global conversations.

According to the department, Jarana brings a wealth of experience to this crucial role, with more than 25 years of leadership in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.

A seasoned business transformation leader, Jarana previously served as Group Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer of Vodacom Business within the Vodacom Group.

He also held the role of Chief Executive Officer of South African Airways, where he spearheaded critical restructuring efforts.

Currently he is the Founder and CEO of Ilitha Telecommunications, a company dedicated to delivering superfast, affordable broadband to underserved peri-urban and rural communities.

He also serves as Chairperson of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), a key institution driving South Africa’s scientific, industrial, and technological innovation agenda.

“His extensive experience and expertise will be invaluable in driving our efforts to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in Africa. He is a respected and seasoned business leader whom I am confident will lead the Startup20 Engagement Group with dedication and focus, ensuring that this serves as a legacy for our country and the ecosystem,” the Minister said.

The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department has successfully appointed over 1000 teachers to ensure that no classroom is without a qualified teacher.

Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka said the department had appointed 1 530 Post Level 1 teachers between January and April 2025.

Also, of the 737 Post Level 1 positions advertised in September 2024, the majority were filled by the end of March 2025.

The posts became vacant due to attrition, including retirements, deaths, promotions and resignations.

The MEC highlighted that most of the vacancies were in critical subject areas, including Mathematics, Mathematics Literacy, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, technical subjects and other newly-introduced subjects.

“This achievement underscores our commitment to providing quality education to learners across the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The filling of these critical posts is a significant milestone for the department, as it will enable us to improve the teacher-to-learner ratio, enhance teaching and learning, and ultimately improve learner outcomes,” Hlomuka said.

He added that the achievement was a testament to the department’s dedication to ensuring that learners receive consistent and quality education.

The MEC expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the process, including teachers’ unions, and the broader education community.

Bloemhof Dam water outflows reduced

Water outflows at Bloemhof Dam have been reduced, says the Department of Water and Sanitation, while the five sluice gates at the Vaal Dam remain open to manage the inflows of water into the dam.

The dapertment said the outflows at Bloemhof Dam were decreased as the dam’s water levels subsided to 104.96%.

The water releases at the Bloemhof dam were reduced from 2 100 to 1900 cubic metres per second (mᵌ/s) at 12pm on Sunday.

The water outflows decrease follows Saturday’s reduction from 2500 mᵌ/s.

“These adjustments are necessary to manage the sustained high inflows and ensure safe operation of the dam.”

Meanwhile, at the Vaal Dam, the water levels have slightly dropped from Saturday’s 115.43% to 114.38% on Sunday, and the inflows from the upper catchment are at 877.38 mᵌ/s.

“The five sluice gates remain open, with a discharge of 813.380 mᵌ/s to manage the water levels at the dam. The controlled water releases at both the dams have led to overtopping of riverbanks downstream, resulting in flooding that has affected settlements that are in the lower-lying areas within the 1 in 100-year floodline,” the department said in a statement on Sunday.

The department urged people living within the floodline of the Vaal River downstream of the Vaal and Bloemhof Dams, who have been evacuated, to continue to avoid the flooded areas.

The department said it continues to monitor inflow water levels in the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS), to ensure that necessary precautions are in place, in line with dam safety standards and hydrological monitoring systems to safeguard infrastructure and attenuate flood conditions.

“As part of the dam safety protocols, sluice gates are opened when dams breach the full capacity mark, to prevent the water resource infrastructure from failing as it may lead to a dam bursting and causing a disaster of unimaginable magnitude.

“The department is therefore implementing these necessary controlled water releases at the dams as part of dam safety precautions to safeguard the infrastructure and protect human life,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

President Ramaphosa appoints Mcebisi Jonas as Special Envoy to the United States

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed former Deputy Finance Minister, Mcebisi Jonas, as his Special Envoy to the United States.

In his new role, Jonas will serve as the official representative of the President and the government of South Africa.

“In this capacity, Mr Jonas is entrusted with the responsibility to advance South Africa’s diplomatic, trade and bilateral priorities. He will lead negotiations, foster strategic partnerships and engage with US government officials and private-sector leaders to promote our nation’s interests,” President Ramaphosa said in a statement on Monday.

The Head of State described Jonas as an eminent South African leader, who served as one of four Presidential Investment Envoys that he appointed in 2018 to facilitate investment into South Africa.

“As a former Deputy Finance Minister of South Africa, Mr Jonas brings extensive governmental experience to his new diplomatic role. Concurrently, he holds the position of Independent Non-Executive Chairman of the MTN Group, a role he will maintain alongside his responsibilities as my Special Envoy,” the President said.

In addition, the President believes that this appointment underscores his distinguished career and continued commitment to advancing South Africa’s national and economic interests.

“For decades, South Africa and the United States of America have maintained a historical and strategic relationship. In the interest of our country, our region and the rest of our continent, I remain committed to rebuilding and maintaining this relationship for more decades based on mutual respect, recognition of each other’s sovereignty and benefit for our respective peoples,” he added.

Meanwhile, a delegation of senior officials, led by South Africa’s Group of 20 (G20) Sherpa and the Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Zane Dangor, recently met with United States officials to clarify the country’s expropriation and equity laws.

During the visit, the delegation engaged with their counterparts in Washington, including senior officials at the White House and the State Department, to address key bilateral priorities. – SAnews.gov.za

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has welcomed Eskom’s recent issuance of a tender to establish a separate renewable energy business unit.

“This significant step reflects Eskom’s dedication to accelerating renewable energy deployment and supporting South Africa’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, consistent with the nation’s Just Energy Transition (JET) objectives and commitments under the Paris Agreement,” the Minister said on Monday.

On 31 March 2025, the Minister granted conditional emissions exemptions to Eskom’s coal-fired power stations, underscoring the urgent need for prioritisation of renewable energy integration.

“The establishment of this independent subsidiary, structured to operate with agility and encourage public-private partnerships, directly addresses those conditions.

“It positions Eskom to capitalise on South Africa’s abundant solar and wind resources, enhance competitiveness, and secure green financing, while contributing to improved air quality and reduced carbon emissions,” George said.

He acknowledged Eskom’s proactive approach and called for a transparent, competitive, and inclusive tender process that fosters opportunities for local and international expertise.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment will closely monitor the initiative’s progress to ensure alignment with South Africa’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the 2050 net-zero emissions target, as well as the stringent conditions imposed on Eskom on 31 March 2025 that support compliance with the Minimum Emissions Standards (MES).

The Minister further encouraged Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and the private sector to actively participate, driving innovation and investment to bolster renewable energy capacity.

“Through collective effort, South Africa can build a resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable energy sector that upholds the constitutional mandate to protect the health and well-being of all its citizens,” he said. - SAnews.gov.za

President Ramaphosa to undertake an oversight visit to the Eastern Cape

President Cyril Ramaphosa will this week undertake an oversight visit to the Eastern Cape province where he will engage with the Provincial Executive Committee and receive a briefing on the Port of Ngqura.

The President’s programme will commence on Tuesday with a briefing by the Transnet leadership on the port which is one of South Africa’s newest deep-water ports, designed for high-efficiency container handling and large vessels.

It is also strategically aligned with the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and positioned as a key transshipment hub for Southern Africa.

“During the visit, the President will receive an update on plans to improve operational efficiencies at the port and projects currently underway,” the Presidency said in a statement.

On Wednesday, the President and Cabinet will meet with Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and his executive council to discuss conditions and opportunities in the province as part of strengthening intergovernmental cooperation, collaboration and consultation.

“The national and provincial executives will discuss various approaches to improving service delivery at local government level,” the Presidency said.

The President’s visit will seek to tighten alignment between provincial priorities and those of the 7th Administration, in line with the joined-up development approach adopted by government in the District Development Model.

This visit will be the fifth engagement between the national executive and provincial governments following recent interactions between the President and the provincial governments of Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Gauteng.

G20 Development Working Group meeting to get underway

The South African Presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20) is this week convening the second Development Working Group (DWG) meeting in the Western Cape.

“The G20 DWG plays a pivotal role in shaping global development priorities, focusing on reducing inequalities, promoting sustainable growth, and strengthening international partnerships,” the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation said.

Starting on Monday, 14 April and ending on Wednesday, 16 April, the meeting will serve as a platform for in-depth discussions on key development challenges and cooperative solutions.

The G20 is an international forum of both developing and developed countries, which seeks to find solutions to global economic and financial issues.

South Africa’s G20 Presidency commenced on 1 December 2024 and will run until 30 November 2025.

The gathering will bring together representatives from G20 member states, invited countries, and international organisations to deliberate on policies that foster inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.

In alignment with the theme of Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability, the discussions will focus on three high-level priorities:
•    High-Level Principles on Global Public Goods and Global Public Investment.
•    Mobilising Finance for Development and Means of Implementation.
•    Building Resilience through Universal Social Protection Floors.

The G20 members represent around 85% of the global Gross Domestic Product, over 75% of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.

It comprises 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom, and United States) and two regional bodies, namely the European Union (EU) and African Union (AU).

Smallholder Farmer Programme empowers 100 farmers

One hundred smallholder farmers in KwaZulu-Natal have received training in herb and spice cultivation enabling them to become suppliers for Unilever's supplier localisation programme, said the Department of Agriculture (DOA).

This is a result of the Jozini Smallholder Farmer Programme by the DOA, Unilever South Africa and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD). The Programme is aimed at promoting sustainability, improving livelihoods, and empowering smallholder farmers in the Jozini region.

The 100 farmers participated in a comprehensive training aligned with Agricultural Sector Education and Training Authority (AgriSETA) unit standards, covering practical and theoretical aspects of herb and spice farming.

“Through the programme, I've gained important skills for nurturing crops, preparing soil, identifying issues, and taking necessary actions to support crop growth. It has also taught me the steps involved in the farming process.

“I’m happy that Unilever is assisting us by providing access to marketplaces to sell our produce, helping to prevent financial losses. I encourage young people and women to join such programmes to learn about farming, which can be a viable source of income,” Jozini smallholder farmer, Zinhle Manzini said.

The farmers also received a tractor while there was also an unveiling of a drying tunnel, symbolising the support and resources for the farmers.

Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen emphasised the importance of collaboration to address the challenges faced by the country.

“Partnerships are very important… we recognise that if we try and do things on our own, we won’t get far, but if we work together, we can go far. Partnerships go beyond just something on paper, or what we say is a priority. Partnerships are rooted in our core philosophy as South Africans – Ubuntu,” the Minister said.

Unilever South Africa CEO Justin Apsey said the initiative will improve the livelihoods of the farmers.

“This initiative will not only improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers but also contribute to a more sustainable agricultural sector. This is a capacity-building initiative empowering and alleviating unemployment while providing a decent life in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal,” said Apsey.

The programme is also aimed at creating employment opportunities, enhancing the skills of local farmers, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

By empowering smallholder farmers, the initiative will contribute to the economic growth and development of the Jozini region. -SAnews.gov.za

Police Minister to visit Mpumalanga drug labs following arrests

Police Minster Senzo Mchunu is this afternoon expected to visit the two drug laboratories and a warehouse which were discovered and shut down by the Hawks in Mpumalanga this week, said the Ministry of Police.

In a statement, the Ministry said the Minister will be accompanied by the National Commissioner of Police, General Fannie Masemola, together with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation National Head, (Dr./Adv) Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya.

The discovery was made in Standerton.

“Equipment and substances with an estimated value of R48 million and seven vehicles have been seized for further investigation. Nine suspects have been arrested,” said the Ministry ahead of Sunday’s visit.

On Wednesday, the Hawks said that two suspects would appear in the Standerton Magistrate's Court after the arrest of six Mozambican nationals.

This as the Hawks’ Secunda based Serious Organised Crime investigation monitored the origin of drugs in Standerton after numerous cases of possession of drugs were reported.

“The task was successfully executed as two clandestine laboratories were clamped down within a week,” the Hawks said at the time.

Additionally, a pressing machine and 35 buckets filled with powder and ready to be pressed into tablets were recovered. -SAnews.gov.za

Small businesses have been encouraged to apply for opportunities provided by the Department of Tourism.

“The Department of Tourism is dedicated to creating an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient tourism economy. We have a variety of programmes with the specific aim of promoting tourism, alleviating poverty and creating jobs,” Tourism Deputy Minister Maggie Sotyu said.

Addressing a stakeholder engagement at the Fezile Dabi District Municipality in the Free State, the Deputy Minister said small businesses face challenges that threaten their survival and growth.

These include limited access to funding and financial support, skills gap in business management and digital transformation, market access and a lack of exposure to international tourists.

“As the government, our role is to enable and empower small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) to overcome these barriers and it is our duty to maximise every opportunity to empower these enterprises.

“Embracing sustainable tourism by black-owned enterprises is not just about being part of a global trend, but is a necessity for resilience, competitiveness and profitability,” the Deputy Minister said on Friday.

The department’s Market Access Support Programme offers financial support to small tourism enterprises to exhibit at tourism platforms.

“I want to urge you to visit the Department of Tourism website at www.tourism.gov.za and look at this Market Access Support Incentive Programme.

“This week we are assisting 49 tourism SMMEs [small, medium, and micro enterprises] to promote their services at the World Travel Market Africa in Cape Town. We also want to encourage you to apply for our Green Tourism Incentive Programme which offers a win-win solution to tourism establishments and our greening objectives,” the Deputy Minister said.

The Green Tourism Incentive Programme is a resource efficiency programme which aims to support tourism enterprises to reduce the cost of investing in energy and water efficient solutions.

“This incentive can greatly assist a tourism establishment to reduce their electricity and water bills in the long term. The department also established a Tourism Transformation Fund and Tourism Equity Fund to support the transformation efforts in the sector.

“The Transformation Fund offers a combination of debt finance and grant funding for new and expansion tourism development projects with majority black shareholding,” she said.

For tourist guides, the department has a number of programmes including language training.

“We recently advertised for youth to apply for tourist guide training in Vredefort Dome and we are currently conducting tourist guide training in Golden Gate National Park.

“For youth in tourism, the department offers annually a bursary programme and learnership programmes, focusing on professional cooking, wine appreciation and hospitality, targeting youth with a specific interest in tourism,” said the Deputy Minister. -SAnews.gov.za

While load shedding remains suspended due to a stable power system, Eskom says ongoing planned maintenance continues at high levels, with unplanned outages showing a year-on-year reduction of approximately 2.9%.

“Emergency reserves are adequate and being used strategically to meet peak demand, while ongoing planned maintenance continues at 14.85% of generation capacity, marking a 3.8% increase compared to the same period last year,” Eskom said on Friday.

The high level of planned maintenance aims to enhance fleet reliability for the anticipated increased peak winter demand while also ensuring compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.

“Currently, 7 402MW of the generation capacity is under planned maintenance. The Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor (UCLF), or unplanned outages, for the financial year-to-date (1 to 10 April 2025), stands at 28.50%, improving by an ~2.85% from 31.35% achieved in the same period last year.

“Eskom has spent R3.6 billion on diesel over the past 30 days, (12 March to 10 April 2025) representing a 2.5% decrease compared to the previous 30-day period,” the power utility said.

A total of 3 130MW will be returned to service before the evening peak on Monday, 14 April 2025, to further stabilise the grid.

Key performance highlights:

•    From 7 to 10 April 2025, average unplanned outages reduced to 13 105MW, showing a significant improvement of 1 691MW compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date (1 April 2025 until 10 April 2025) average unplanned outages stand at 13 578MW.
•    As of Friday, unplanned outages have significantly decreased by 2 044MW, currently at 11 564MW compared to 13 608MW last week. The available generation capacity stands at 28 662MW, while tonight’s peak demand is forecasted at 26 788MW.
•    The year-to-date Planned Capacity Loss Factor (planned maintenance) is 14.85%, approximately 3.8% higher than the 11.03% recorded during the same period last year, indicating an increase in planned maintenance activities.
•    From 1 to 10 April 2025, the year-to-date EAF stands at 56.11%, slightly below compared to the same period last year (57.16%), mainly due to higher planned maintenance.
•    Year-to-date (1 to 10 April 2025), Eskom spent approximately R1.34 billion on fuel for the Open-Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTs) fleet, generating 228.33GWh. This is higher than the 64.09GWh generated during the same period last year. This is expected to decrease as maintenance activities begin to slow down.
•    The OCGT load factor increased to 29.95% in the past week (4 to 10 April 2025), up from 22.69% recorded between 27 March to 3 April 2025. This is higher than the 9% recorded during the same period last year.
•    Year-to-date (1 to 10 April 2025), the OCGT load factor is 27.87%, higher than last year’s figure of 7.82%.

Eskom has urged the public to help prevent transformer overloads and related equipment failures, which can result in explosions and prolonged outages.

“This can be achieved by avoiding illegal connections, purchasing electricity only from Eskom-accredited vendors and ensuring that customers take responsibility for regularising their electricity usage. Eligible households are encouraged to register for free basic electricity with their local municipalities,” the power utility said.
