Nelson Mandela Bay residents urged to stop vandalism of infrastructure

Nelson Mandela Bay residents urged to stop vandalism of infrastructure

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has called on community members to report and stop the vandalism of electricity infrastructure.

The call follows the collapse of a substation in Khayelitsha, Kariega, due to vandalism.

The City’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Electricity and Energy, Ziyanda Mnqokoyi, said the incident, which took place last week Monday, has resulted in the loss of power supply to many households.

Mnqokoyi said the substation is currently undergoing rehabilitation, and it will take approximately two weeks to fix the damage.

“We have been conducting oversight visits throughout last week in the affected substation building, which has unfortunately collapsed due to vandalism, resulting in a loss of power supply, and we can report that work has started.

“However, to restore power, a comprehensive scope of work is required, including the building of the distribution substation, procurement and installation of switchgear, and testing and commissioning,” Mnqokoyi said.

She said the team has made it clear that given the complexity of the work, ordinarily a completion timeframe for this type of work would take at least six months.

“However, they are working diligently to expedite the process, aiming to complete the project by 31 January 2025,” Mnqokoyi said.

Mnqokoyi has condemned the "blatant criminality", and appealed to residents to stop vandalising infrastructure, as this affects service delivery.

The MMC also called on any resident with information regarding the incident to report it to the municipality’s law enforcement agencies, or the South African Police Service, in order to bring the perpetrators to book. - SAnews.gov.za

Government, private sector partner to empower learners in rural KZN

Government, private sector partner to empower learners in rural KZN

Learners in uMkhanyakude, in the uMtubatuba region of northern KwaZulu-Natal, received a boost at the start of the school year when the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Nomalungelo Gina, led a back-to-school campaign.

In partnership with Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa and the Izimpande Foundation, the Deputy Minister on Tuesday delivered 132 new school shoes to Bathathe and Mfekayi primary schools.

Both schools are no-fee institutions that provide accessible, quality education to their communities.

These schools are pivotal in uplifting the Mtubatuba region by fostering educational growth and opportunities for young learners.

Gina reaffirmed her belief that every learner deserves the necessary resources to thrive academically.

The Deputy Minister also extended her efforts to KwaNxusa High School in the uMthonjaneni Municipality and Qantayi High School in the uMhlathuze Municipality, where she donated essential stationery earlier this month.

Inspired by her initiative, Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa and the Izimpande Foundation partnered with the Deputy Minister to expand the campaign and provide much-needed school shoes.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education District Director, Thanduyise Motha, emphasised that providing children with adequate resources from the foundation phase sets a strong base for their academic success.

He said uMkhanyakude has risen to become KwaZulu-Natal’s top-performing district for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Class of 2024, securing the third spot nationally.

Motha said when he was first appointed to the position, the district was ranked 75th countrywide, highlighting the incredible progress made in improving educational outcomes in the region.

Referring to the donation of school shoes, Motha said the gesture helps to contribute to the excellent pass rate in the district, which motivates learners to study further and harder.

He believes that this also motivates teachers to commit more to the success of the learners.

“This shows that government delivers on its promises at the basic education level, and I thank the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation for gracing us with this much-needed support,” Motha said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister expressed her gratitude to the private sector for its role in the initiative.

“I thank the private sector for partnering with government in this initiative to positively impact our children, planting a seed from which the learners will reap benefits for their future,” she said.

During her interaction with the learners, Gina was inspired by their ambitions, as some learners expressed aspirations of becoming doctors, while another learner shared his dream of pursuing a career as a social worker.

The Deputy Minister encouraged all learners to stay committed to their studies and thanked parents for their essential role in supporting their children’s education.

Izimpande Foundation’s Sihle Ngobese highlighted the importance of supporting male learners in society, an initiative that led to the formation of the non-profit organisation in 2019, and the donation of school resources to various schools around the country.

“The idea of donating school resources is more than anything personal, where I was even assisted by someone I did not even know (sic). This planted a seed in me that I will also help others, just as I was helped.”

The principals of both schools expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the generous donation.

They both expressed hopes for continued support to further improve their school infrastructure and educational resources for the betterment of their learners.

The back-to-school campaign underscored the transformative power of partnerships in addressing challenges faced by underprivileged learners and ensuring they have the tools and support needed to excel in their education. – SAnews.gov.za

Twenty suspects nabbed during Vala Umgodi operations in Limpopo

Twenty suspects nabbed during Vala Umgodi operations in Limpopo

The prompt response from Limpopo Vala Umgodi multidisciplinary forces has led to the arrest of 20 suspects involved in illegal mining, drug dealing and violations of immigration laws.

In a statement on Tuesday, Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, said chrome worth over R1 million was also seized during an operation conducted on Sunday, following credible information from the community.

In Sekhukhune District, the task team acted on a tip-off regarding a drug dealer operating at the Groblersdal taxi rank.

Hadebe said the team’s swift response led to the arrest of a 31-year-old suspect, who was found in possession of 34 sachets of rock drugs, including 36 sachets of nyaope, 31 sachets of dagga, one plastic bag containing dagga and R656 in cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales.

A 53-year-old male suspect was also arrested at the same taxi rank for possession of four packs of illicit Remington Gold cigarettes.

“Further investigations led the team to a farm in Dithamaga village, Burgersfort, where illegal mining activities were taking place. Two male suspects, aged 38 and 58, were apprehended for illegally mining chrome with an excavator,” Hadebe said.

A total of 13 loads of chrome, with an estimated value of R1 058 560, and an excavator were also confiscated.

“In separate operations across the Capricorn, Mopani and Vhembe Districts, 15 individuals, aged between 22 and 41 years, were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act. The suspects were found to be in the country without the necessary documentation,” Hadebe said.

Hadebe has commended the joint efforts of the police and the community in combatting crime in the province.

She said the suspects are expected to appear before the respective magistrate’s courts in due course.

Twelve arrested for illicit mining in Northern Cape

Meanwhile, the continuous intelligence-driven disruptive operations conducted by the multidisciplinary teams of Operation Vala Umgodi, with a focus on illicit mining and other related crimes,  has led to the arrest of 12 suspects in the Frances Baard and Namakwa Districts, Northern Cape.

Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Molefi Shemane, said police received information about suspected illegal mining activities taking place at a mining hotspot in Kleinzee, in the west coast of the Northern Cape.

Further investigation led to the arrest of four suspects, aged between 35 and 57, for alleged illegal mining and trespassing on Saturday.

“The police seized equipment suspected to be used in the commission of illicit mining, and bags containing possible suspected diamond bearing material,” Shemane said.

In Frances Baard District, the police also received information about illegal activities taking place at identified locations in Barkly West.

Shemane said the police arrested five undocumented persons between the ages of 26 and 47, as well as the seizure of ammunition.

“Furthermore, members received information regarding the sale of drugs in Windsorton and upon arrival, a male suspect was searched, and suspected drugs were found in his possession. The 65-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested,” Shemane said.

During a search in another location in Kimberley, drugs were found and confiscated. A 50-year-old man was arrested for possession of drugs.

In an unrelated matter, a 36-year-old male was apprehended on Sunday in Galeshewe for dealing in drugs.

“Drugs with an estimated value of R3 000 were confiscated with a substantial amount of money believed to be the proceeds of criminal activities,” Shemane said.

Shemane has reassured that the police will continue with their concerted efforts in addressing illicit mining activities, as well as other related crimes.

The public is reminded to report any criminal activities to SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS App. – SAnews.gov.za

Mashatile calls on Nedlac stakeholders to execute plans to grow the economy

Mashatile calls on Nedlac stakeholders to execute plans to grow the economy

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has acknowledged that the country’s efforts to promote economic growth through investments and infrastructure development have yet to yield satisfactory results due to slow economic growth.

Delivering the keynote address at the annual Nedlac Organised Labour School held at Kievits Kroon in Pretoria on Tuesday, Mashatile cited ArcelorMittal South Africa's recently proposed closures and reduction in production in the steel industry, which is expected to impact thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

The Deputy President noted that some companies in the mining sector have implemented significant employment cuts.

“Through our collective efforts, we have developed collectively-agreed sector plans. However, all stakeholders of Nedlac [National Economic Development and Labour Council] must bear the responsibility of facilitating the speedy execution of these plans so they can live up to our expected outcomes. There is evidence that we can do this,” the Deputy President said.

He believes that a 1.5% economic growth is insufficient to tackle some challenges facing the country.

“We want to see much bigger growth going forward to address the challenges. In a way, the austerity measures are a result of an economy that is not growing as fast as we had envisioned.“

The Nedlac Organised Labour School takes place every year to evaluate the current state of the labour market and the challenges that workers face in the country.

Delegations from various labour federations, guests from the International Labour Organisation, and representatives from government departments filled the conference room.

The Deputy President reviewed policy programmes designed to ensure decent employment for the majority of South Africans in the past three decades.

He emphasised substantial improvements in labour conditions, unemployment rates and social benefits.

“We have also introduced the minimum wage, the two-pot retirement system, as well as other policies that cushioned workers and the poor.”

However, despite progressive interventions, the Deputy President stated that challenges such as high unemployment, poverty, inequality, crime and gender-based violence persist.

He believes that the COVID-19 pandemic tested the resilience of the labor sector and exposed vulnerabilities within the economic framework.

“It is through the collective efforts of government, unions, and the private sector that we were able to protect millions of workers’ livelihoods, even in the middle of adversity.”

In addition, the State was also instrumental in the introduction of improved retirement packages and social benefits for dependents of labour union members, providing greater financial security for workers and their families.

There is a silver lining amid the challenges, the Deputy President said, as South Africa’s official unemployment rate decreased from 33.5% in the second quarter to 32.1% in the third quarter. This marks the first decline in a year and indicates a positive shift in the labour market.

G20

The country’s second-in-command turned his attention to South Africa hosting the Group of Twenty (G20) Leaders’ Summit this year -- a first for an African country.

Mashatile believes that hosting the G20 will help advance Africa’s development agenda, as well as that of the Global South.

“We, therefore, expect that labour in South Africa, will, through the Civil Society 20 (C20), contribute to discussions that will reshape the global agenda, as we seek to resolve the challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality, but also reframe and reposition global financial institutions towards social justice.”

The G20 aims to ensure that world leaders pay attention to the recommendations and demands of organized civil society.

As the nation forges ahead, Mashatile said it is imperative to harness the collective power of all stakeholders – unions, government and the private sector – to ensure that South Africa’s labour market is inclusive, fair and globally competitive.

“We must address income inequality and improve the quality of life for our workforce. We are not merely fostering economic growth but building a South Africa where every worker feels valued and empowered.”

He called on everyone in the room to recommit themselves to the values of solidarity, equity and justice.

“The labour movement, as the backbone of our nation, holds the power to drive South Africa’s economic transformation. Together, through collaboration and collective action, we can overcome the challenges of the 21st century and create a future of dignity, equality and prosperity for all workers.”

Mashatile noted that the Nedlac Organised Labour School session coincides with the World Economic Forum, where President Cyril Ramaphosa and other government leaders are representing the nation.

The team, led by the President in Davos, Switzerland, will advance South Africa's position on important global issues, particularly those related to economic development, as a key player in the global economy and within the continent. – SAnews.gov.za

Mashatile assures unions’ interests protection under GNU

Location: News

Mashatile assures unions' interests protection under GNU

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has urged labour union leaders not to fear the Government of National Unity (GNU) formed after the May 2024 elections.

“Don’t be scared of the GNU. I know in the beginning there were many saying this GNU includes those who don’t have the interest of workers at heart, so we might see the reversal of the gains that workers have made over the years. But I said to them, don’t worry we’re there,” Mashatile said.

Mashatile explained that the GNU is made up of a collective in a Cabinet, appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“The Ministers are not allowed to come with their own policies. We agreed on the priorities and statements of intent. Yes, people can talk about their policies in their parties. But in government, we all work in terms of the priorities of government.

“We will make sure that the workers’ rights are protected, so don’t be scared. Workers’ rights will always be protected even in the GNU. Please sleep peacefully at night,” he assured the leaders.

The Deputy President was delivering a keynote address at the annual Nedlac Organised Labour School, held at Kievits Kroon in Pretoria, on Tuesday.

He stated that they have to ensure the achievements made over the past 30 years are preserved, and that they will continue to defend these accomplishments.

Mashatile highlighted the GNU's policy priority areas, which include growing an inclusive economy, reducing the cost of living, and building a capable, ethical, and developmental State.

“In realising these priority areas, we believe that we must continue to create a social compact with labour, business, and civil society, as we have done through NEDLAC [National Economic Development and Labour Council].”

The Nedlac Organised Labour School takes place every year to evaluate the current state of the labour market and the challenges that workers face in the country.

Delegations from various labour federations, guests from the International Labour Organisation, and representatives from government departments, filled the conference room.

The union leaders raised key points, including the defence of progressive policies, the importance of local government collaboration, and the challenges of funding and corruption.

This year, the country’s second-in-command, said government will host the National Dialogue aimed at drawing from lessons from the past, to shape the future beyond the National Development Plan (NDP) 2030.

According to the Deputy President, the National Dialogue will take place in a year when South Africa celebrates 70 years of the Freedom Charter, a statement of core principles that have and continue to shape policy in South Africa.

“The task of organised labour in this regard is to provide innovative solutions on how best to strengthen our economy, build social cohesion and improve governance systems, placing the needs of the workers at the forefront.”

He believes that the National Dialogue will shape the country’s outlook towards and beyond 2055, a year when the country will celebrate the centenary of the Freedom Charter.

“Our ultimate objective must be to realise a South Africa that belongs to all who live in it, Black and White, as envisaged in the Freedom Charter. Indeed, this is the only way that we can realise the country of our dreams as charged by those who gathered in 1955 in Kliptown.”

Nedlac is the vehicle by which government, labour, business, and community organisations seek to cooperate, through problem-solving and negotiation, on economic, labour, and development issues and related challenges facing the country.

The Deputy President defined the labour movement as the backbone of the nation, holding the power to drive South Africa’s economic transformation.

"Together, through collaboration and collective action, we can overcome the challenges of the 21st century and create a future of dignity, equality, and prosperity for all workers,” Mashatile said – SAnews.gov.za

Five-year-old repatriated from Mauritius adjusts to new life with family in SA

Location: News

Five-year-old repatriated from Mauritius adjusts to new life with family in SA

Despite a challenging start to life, a young South African girl repatriated from Mauritius in December last year, is blossoming into what her grandmother describes as a “ball of fun and sunshine”.

The child, who was born in Mauritius, lived in a prison compound on the island, where her mother is awaiting trial for allegedly trafficking drugs. On turning five, the little girl had to leave her mother and the prison and start life anew in South Africa with extended family.

The little girl now lives with her grandmother in the North West province and was earlier this month preparing to start Grade R.

Speaking to the Department of Social Development, the grandmother shared that the transition has had its ups and downs but is ultimately a story of resilience, family support and healing.

A new beginning

On 10 December 2024, the little girl, clutching her favourite doll, landed at OR Tambo International Airport, marking the start of a new chapter.

Her repatriation was facilitated by the Department of Social Development, in partnership with the South African Embassy in Mauritius. Social workers recommended foster care with her maternal grandmother to ensure the child’s best interests were prioritised.

Her grandmother described the reunion as an emotional moment filled with tears of joy and hope.

Now, over a month since her return, the little girl is beginning to settle into her new life surrounded by the love and support of her family.

Her story is one of resilience, healing, and the power of family bonds to overcome even the most difficult circumstances – and of a little girl allowed to be a child.

Challenges and breakthroughs

Adjusting to life outside the prison compound in Mauritius, where she spent her early years, came with challenges. Initially shy and withdrawn, the little girl often asked about her mother and clung to her doll for comfort.

“When she first arrived, she cried a lot, asking about her mother. She clung to me and her doll constantly and was very quiet around her cousins,” the grandmother said.

A turning point came when her 17-year-old brother became a source of reassurance.

“He would hug her, tell her not to cry, and remind her that their mom would come home someday. That connection helped her feel safe,” the grandmother said.

By Christmas, the family began to see the child’s personality emerge. “She’s become a source of joy and laughter, always playing and smiling,” her grandmother said proudly.

Building a stable life

Despite the challenges, the grandmother is determined to provide her granddaughter with the stability and care she needs.

The grandmother is collaborating with the Department of Social Development to access care and protection services, including a foster care grant, to support the child’s education and well-being.

“I plan to use part of the grant for her school fees. We’re getting her ready for Grade R, and I want to make sure she has everything she needs to succeed,” the grandmother said.

The family has also introduced her to South African culture, including traditional foods and local languages. Having spoken French and Creole all her life, the child is now learning English, isiXhosa and Sesotho from her cousins.

“The other day, she asked for a slice of steamed bread during breakfast and to my surprise, she loved it and even asked for a second slice,” her grandmother said with a laugh.

“It’s moments like these that remind me she’s adjusting well. She’s getting used to everyone, and she’s loved very much.”

A message of reflection and the future

As she navigates her granddaughter’s transition, the grandmother reflected on the consequences of her daughter’s choices that led to her incarceration.

“People need to understand the implications of what they put their families through,” she said, a mixture of sadness and determination washing through her voice.

However, her focus remains on the future and building her granddaughter up.

“The past can’t be changed, but we can shape her future. With the help of social workers, the foster care grant, and the love of her family, we’re giving her the home and life she deserves. Time is a healer, and we’re taking it one day at a time,” the grandmother said.

Today, the young girl is thriving in a home filled with love and care. From watching fireworks for the first time on New Year’s Eve to playing with her cousins, she is embracing her new life in South Africa.

“She’s already thriving. Every day, she’s becoming more confident and more comfortable. She’s where she belongs now,” the grandmother said. – SAnews.gov.za

Condolences for family of NPA Deputy Head

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has expressed condolences to the De Kock family, following the passing of Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions (DNDPP), Advocate Rodney De Kock.

De Kock passed away on Monday following a brain cancer diagnosis in December.

“The NPA leadership, NPA staff and colleagues in the criminal justice system will miss his passion for justice and the rule of law in this country. DK, as we fondly called him, was a pillar of strength in the NPA.

“Strength to the De Kock family and friends, and his NPA family during this difficult time,” the prosecutorial body said in a statement.

The NDPP, Advocate Shamila Batohi said: “This is a huge loss for the NPA and the country. He was a solid lawyer, a gentleman, and a true warrior for justice. He will be sorely missed.”

De Kock was appointed as Deputy NDPP by President Cyril Ramaphosa in June 2020 – a position he held until his death.

“He joined the NPA ExCo team to contribute to the rebuilding of the NPA after years of state capture. Prior to being appointed DNDPP, he was Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Western Cape— the first black man appointed to the position of DPP in South Africa.

“As DNDPP responsible for the National Prosecutions Service, he led the core function of the NPA which is prosecutions, and supervised DPPs from all the Divisions.

“[He also] led the law enforcement agencies on the FATF, focusing our collective efforts and commitment to get the country to exit grey listing and dedicated his last months to this work,” the NPA said. – SAnews.gov.za

NSFAS organises resources for higher learning institutions

While institutions are gearing up to welcome dozens of students to their campuses, both new and returning, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is currently preparing for the deployment of resources to institutions across all provinces.

NSFAS said the resources would include servicing administrators, student accommodation officials, as well as graduate interns.

“This is to ensure a smooth start of the 2025 academic year for our beneficiaries. NSFAS Circular 13 of 2024 sent to institutions on 07 January 2025, advised that as part of our student support plans, we will deploy officials to all institutions for a period of two months, from 13 January 2025 until 07 March 2025,” NSFAS said in a statement.

The scheme said it had concluded a graduate recruitment process and appointed graduate interns.

The interns will be deployed alongside the servicing administrators across different institutions to work with financial aid officials on bursary administration daily.

“The deployment and placement of these resources to institutions is aimed at ensuring that for the 2025 academic year, each institution has a resource tasked with assisting students with queries which need NSFAS’ attention. The recruited graduates are currently undergoing formal training,” the scheme said.

Applicants called to submit supporting documents

Meanwhile, NSFAS has called on students who applied for funding to submit supporting documents after receiving communication from the scheme.

“Applicants have 30 days to submit from the day of receiving communication. Applicants must not wait for the deadline, but should submit now,” NSFAS said.

To submit the requested documents, applicants must log into their myNSFAS portal and upload the documents.

“To track their application status, applicants can add NSFAS on WhatsApp 078 519 8006 or use USSD *120*67327# or via email info@nsfas.org.za,” NSFAS said.

The scheme reiterated that qualifying students must not pay any registration fee to the institutions of higher learning, until the process is complete, but “wait for communication from NSFAS on the final decision”.

NSFAS warned applicants against fraudsters who pretend to be NSFAS officials and urged them to report any suspicious messages or calls to the NSFAS ethics and fraud hotline on 0800 007 396.

South Africa to showcase country's 'energy agenda' at WEF meeting

Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has arrived in Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting, where he is expected to spearhead South Africa’s energy agenda.

Ramokgopa is part of the South African delegation, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the 55th World Economic Forum annual meeting, currently underway in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland.

“The Minister…has arrived in Davos to join President Cyril Ramaphosa who is leading the South African delegation at the 55th World Economic Forum (WEF) from 20-24 January 2025, to share significant strides South Africa has achieved in energy stability, regulatory reforms and future energy plans that will enable inclusive economic growth,” the department said in a statement.

The Minister is supported by Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane and South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) Group CEO, Loyiso Tyabashe, who are expected to “support in telling the South African energy story”.

“This year, South Africa is poised to showcase progress in energy reform and its commitment to a sustainable energy future and share how it will use the G20 Presidency to further regional and global sustainability goals.

“As the nation embarks on an ambitious energy transition, the focus remains on achieving energy sovereignty, fostering sustainability, and promoting inclusive economic growth. The current positive sentiment South Africa enjoys based on stabilising the energy situation, augers well for its plans to attract investments into the country,” the department said.

The department outlined the key highlights of the country’s energy agenda at the WEF meeting, and these include:

  • Energy Reforms and Market Transformation: South Africa has successfully eliminated load shedding since March 2024, a testament to the effectiveness of recent energy sector reforms. The Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill, signed into law in August 2024, has modernized the electricity market, encouraging private sector participation and competition.
  • Elevating Private Sector Participation: The government is focused on increasing generation capacity from 48 GW to 78 GW by 2035, with significant investments in renewable energy, natural gas, and nuclear power. The collaboration between government through Eskom and other state-owned companies and private investors is crucial in driving this transition.
  • Advancing Renewable Energy Investments: South Africa has procured over 13,422 MW of renewable energy since 2020, with investments exceeding $16 billion. This positions the country as a competitive player in the global renewable energy landscape.
  • Global Leadership in Energy Transition: As South Africa prepares to assume the G20 Presidency in 2025, the focus will be on addressing global energy challenges, ensuring energy security and affordability, and promoting equitable energy transitions across Africa.

The department added that South African Energy Family delegation, aims to engage with international partners, to showcase the country's energy market reforms, and explore investment opportunities that will drive South Africa’s energy agenda forward.

“This participation at the World Economic Forum underscores South Africa's commitment to leading the global conversation on sustainable energy transitions and climate action,” the statement said. – SAnews.gov.za

Eskom edges closer to meeting load shedding target

Eskom edges closer to meeting load shedding target

Eskom Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo, says eyes at the power utility are now firmly fixed on reaching a year without implementing load shedding - a target that is just slightly more than two months away.

This as Eskom reached 300 days without implementing the scheduled rolling black outs today.

“Credit goes to all our 40 000 dedicated and skilled Eskom employees, who are committed to serving South Africa. Our sights are now firmly focused on delivering one year without load shedding at midnight on 26 March 2025.

“These 300 days without load shedding have been characterised by a significant reduction in unplanned outages, which have long been one of the biggest challenges, a notable improvement in the energy availability factor of approximately 7%, and savings in diesel expenditure of R16.42 billion,” Nxumalo said.

The State-owned entity’s Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, said the performance is putting the power utility on a “path to profitability”.

Eskom’s performance has been on a steady upward trajectory since the implementation of the Energy Action Plan introduced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2022, as well as the implementation of the power utility’s own Generation Recovery Plan.

“Public sentiment is shifting. Business leaders, who once had to invest precious capex in self-generation, have enquired whether they should revert to investing in Eskom for their power needs.

“The savings we are making in diesel spend are invested in the business to drive efficiencies further and place Eskom on a path to profitability and long-term operational and financial sustainability,” Marokane said.

Eskom said it will continue to focus on implementing plans to further improve performance.

“Eskom expresses gratitude to all stakeholders, including the Minister of Electricity and Energy, the Eskom Board, government and the National Energy Crisis Committee, for the collaborative effort in addressing the country’s electricity challenges.

“Eskom will continue to focus on implementing generation recovery, strengthening governance, and tackling crime and corruption, while future-proofing the organisation to enable energy security, growth and long-term sustainability to the benefit of South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa,” the power utility said. – SAnews.gov.za

Government increases fish allocation by 36%

Location: News

Government increases fish allocation by 36%

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has announced a 36% increase in the allocation of certain key fish species.

This allocation marks a significant step towards empowering small-scale fishers, strengthening local economies and driving sustainable growth in South Africa’s fishing communities.

"This 36% increase in fish allocations for own use is about improving livelihoods, empowering fishing communities, and stimulating economic activity in our coastal regions.

“By supporting small-scale fishers, we’re ensuring that they become central players in driving local development and sustainability,” the Minister said on Tuesday.

He said the increased allocations form part of a broader strategy to promote inclusive economic growth and job creation while preserving South Africa’s rich marine biodiversity.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is working to reinvigorate coastal harbours as hubs of economic activity and it wants to help uplift small-scale fishers so that they can fully capitalise on these expanded opportunities.

“This initiative reaffirms the government’s dedication to addressing socio-economic obstacles in coastal areas while ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources for future generations,” the department said. - SAnews.gov.za

Eskom to reach 300 days of no load shedding at midnight

Location: News

Eskom to reach 300 days of no load shedding at midnight

At midnight tonight, Eskom will reach 300 days without implementing load shedding – a milestone not seen since June 2018.

Eskom has shown vast improvement since the implementation of the Energy Action Plan introduced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2022, as well as the implementation of the power utility’s own Generation Recovery Plan.

“This performance has also resulted in year-to-date diesel savings of R16.42 billion [year-on-year], which is about 62.9% less than the R26.09 billion spent during the same period last year, as a result of the continued execution of the Generation Operational Recovery plan.

“In August, Eskom shared its summer outlook for the period from 1 September 2024 to 31 March 2025, predicting a likely scenario of a load shedding free summer due to structural generation improvements. This outlook remains unchanged,” Eskom said.

The power utility listed the following as its key performance highlights:

  • Year-to-date unplanned outages average 12 040MW, remaining below the summer base case of 13 000MW by 960MW.
  • As of Friday, unplanned outages stand at 12 566MW, while available generation capacity is 28 145MW.
  • The Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor (UCLF) is at 25.22% for the financial year-to-date (1 April 2024 to 16 January 2025), improving from 32.78% in the corresponding period last year. This represents a 7.6% improvement.
  • Ongoing planned maintenance at 6799MW aligns with our summer maintenance strategy to further improve reliability in preparation for winter 2025 and beyond.
  • Strategic use of peaking stations, including pumped storage and OCGTs, remains available to manage electricity demand during peak times, particularly during evening peaks (5pm to 10pm).

Meanwhile, the power utility has appointed Dr Candice Hartley as Chief People Officer and Rivoningo Mnisi as Group Executive for Renewables.

Eskom Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, said: “In the last ten months, we have focussed on strengthening our executive team not only to bring in specialist skills to drive the delivery of our strategy in a fast-moving and increasingly competitive marketplace, but to also drive interventions to address the legacy management control issues that have characterised our recent audit findings”.

Hartley, who boasts two decades of experience in Human Resources, served as Executive Partner and Head of People at KPMG South Africa before joining Eskom.

Mnisi also brings to Eskom some two decades of experience in digitalisation, innovation, and sustainability and was Chief Strategy Officer at Exxaro before joining the power utility.

“A key area of [Hartley’s] focus will be to ensure Eskom has the skills the organisation requires to operate in a competitive marketplace. She will also transition Eskom’s human capital practices and workforce plans to align with the strategy and ensure the wider adoption of technology across the organisation.

“[Mnisi’s] focus will be on delivering an Eskom renewable energy business that will become a significant player in this segment, focussing on work already in progress for an executable initial pipeline of at least 2GW of clean energy projects by 2026. He will also lead the advancement of Eskom’s pipeline of more than 20GW of clean energy projects to diversify its energy mix as part of the emissions reduction strategy,” Eskom said in a statement. – SAnews.gov.za

Celebrating 30 years of policing in a democratic SA

Location: News

Celebrating 30 years of policing in a democratic SA

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) work under the most daunting working environments as the country struggles with high rates of violent crime, including homicide and sexual assault.

When police officers leave their families every day to perform their duties, the brave men and women in blue are putting their lives on the line and risk returning home in a coffin.

Through the commemoration of National Police Day, which takes place annually on 27 January, government recognises the hard work and sacrifices that the country’s police officers make and continue to make to provide a safe South Africa for all.

Speaking to SAnews, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla MKhwanazi, said this year’s celebrations coincides with 30 years of policing in a democratic South Africa.

“We know that in 1995 there was an amalgamation of different policing agencies that we had in the country that established the SAPS…[now] we are all one in policing in the country as mandated by the Constitution of the Republic,” MKhwanazi said.

When South Africa attained independence in 1994, the new democratic order brought about many changes and had a substantial impact on policing.

Last year, South Africa celebrated the 30th anniversary of the country’s democratic dispensation and commemorated the nation’s first democratic election on 27 April 1994.

This historic milestone coincided with the 28th anniversary of the enactment of the South African Constitution as the supreme law of the land.

“We are going to be celebrating 30 years of policing in a democratic South Africa. We will be displaying all our capabilities as the SAPS. The National Police Day is one of the activities on the SAPS calendar that has been gazetted by government and authorised for us to have a celebration.

“This year’s event will be celebrated in KwaZulu-Natal, specifically in eThekwini. We want to give confidence that Durban remains a place of interest for hosting big events,” the provincial police commissioner said.

Since its establishment in April 2024, the Presidential eThekwini Working Group (PeWG) has been working hard to address critical service delivery, infrastructure, and socio-economic challenges within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality with the goal of positioning the city as an investment and tourism hub.

The Working Group operates across three spheres of government and includes representatives from the private sector and labour.

Call for donations for the SAPS education trust fund

Prior to National Police Day, the SAPS will host a fundraising event, which will be in the form of a golf day on 25 January 2025.

The SAPS has established the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) to raise funds for the provisioning of financial or any other form of assistance to a child or children of members in the service that died in the execution of official duties or on duty, by financing the costs of such child’s or children’s educational needs.

“This allows us to assist these children to go through school until the obtain their first tertiary qualification to make life better for them because those men and women would have died saving society and therefore their children should not be forgotten.

“Of course, government will pay their insurance, but on top of that, we felt that it is important that we find a way of augmenting the resources they have in order to be able to go to school without any struggles.

“We are doing the fundraising and we rely heavily on business to come on board and help us finance the educational trust fund,” Mkhwanazi said.

Last year, the provincial fundraising event in KwaZulu Natal managed to raise about R1.2 million.

“This is the national event so we expect businesses from all over the country to contribute and donate to this fund. We are hoping that if KZN can pull more than R1 million alone, with nine provinces that will raise more funds to assist the children of the departed members.

“These are members that we normally celebrate every September in Pretoria at the Union Buildings, that would have died in the line of duty,” he said.

National Police Commemoration Day takes place on the first Sunday in September in memory of police officers who died in the line of duty in the last twelve months.

The education trust is comprised of members that are independent of the SAPS and meets all the legal requirements for donations.

“On the 26 January 2025, we are going to have the Excellence Awards where we recognise outstanding dedication, service, and excellence across various categories within the SAPS.

“We are going to be recognising those who have gone beyond the call of duty, including the committee members that have played the role in helping us fight crime in their role as the Community Policing Forums (CPF)

“If a police officer is off duty and places themselves in a position to prevent crime or becomes a rescuer of people that are trapped in dams or pit toilets, and you sacrifice yourself by taking them out, that is beyond your duties. It is such individuals that we want to recognize,” Mkhwanazi said. -SAnews.gov.za

NPA seizes R52.5m in cross border strike against illegal mining

Location: News

NPA seizes R52.5m in cross border strike against illegal mining

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) – working in collaboration with the South African Financial Intelligence Centre (SA-FIC), the Namibian Financial Intelligence Centre (Nam-FIC) and the Namibian Prosecutor-General (Nam PG) office has seized some R52.5 million held in eight Namibian bank accounts.

NPA Mpumalanga Regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said the money is allegedly linked to intentions to commit or proceeds from “massive alleged illegal coal mining” in the province’s Carolina area.

“On 2 December 2024 the SA-FIC, in collaboration with their Nam-FIC counterparts, obtained a Namibian FIC temporary freeze upon the funds of Jacobus Hosea Jordaan and his wife Elza Jordaan… to the value of R50 205 872.

“On 30 December 2024 the Nam PG’s office managed to obtain a Preservation of Property order in the Namibian High Court, Windhoek in respect of the abovementioned R50 205 872 on the basis that the money… represents the proceeds of, and/or was used as instrumentalities, to commit the abovementioned massive alleged illegal coal mining and other offences, including money laundering in the Carolina area,” she said.

Nyuswa added that last week, a second preservation of property order was granted to the value of R2 285 500 in the Namibian High Court “in respect of two further Namibian bank accounts in the name of Reinet Binneman," the sister of Elza Jordaan.

“Jacobus Jordaan and his wife Elza Jordaan are among the main accused in the Carolina illegal coal mining case that was transferred to the Mbombela High Court on 6 December 2024 to November 2025 for trial.

“The illegal financial benefit obtained by the accused from the illegal coal mining and other offences in Mpumalanga allegedly amounts to at least R2 billion,” Nyuswa explained.

She described cooperation between the two countries’ law enforcement officials as “remarkable”.

“There was remarkable cooperation and hard work during the December festive season between the abovementioned Namibian and the South African law enforcement agencies to obtain the abovementioned Namibian High Court seizure orders.

“Both Namibia and South Africa were grey listed a few years ago by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) for, amongst others, failing to sufficiently combat money laundering. The abovementioned two Namibian seizure orders will assist enormously in getting both countries off the FATF grey list,” she said.

The dedication, enthusiasm and commitment of the abovementioned law enforcement agencies also make a huge difference in combating transnational crime in the two countries.

Digging in

Nyuswa said that as early as November 2023, police and law enforcement had already pounced on alleged illegal mining activities in the Carolina – leading to arrests and seizures of property.

“On 15 November 2023 the NPA AFU in Mpumalanga, in collaboration with a special illegal mining unit in the [SAPS], obtained provisional preservation of property order in the Mbombela High Court upon, amongst others, a farm in the Carolina district, stockpiles/heaps of coal in two separate areas, heavy duty mining machinery, equipment and motor vehicles as well as the washing plant machinery and all movable buildings, machines, equipment and motor vehicles used at Droog Valley farm Barrel Coal Processing and Washing Plant near Carolina, Mpumalanga area.

“The assets were seized on the basis that it was, on reasonable grounds, believed to be, used as instrumentalities to commit various illegal large-scale coal mining and environmental offences at the farm in the Carolina area, and/or that the assets are reasonable grounds to believe the proceeds of unlawful activities, and/or represents the proceeds of unlawful activities, namely the large-scale illegal coal mining and environmental offences.

“It was the largest seizure of its kind ever in South Africa,” Nyuswa said.

A further provisional restraint of property order was granted to law enforcement against assets to the value of some R1 billion.

“Jacobus and his wife, Elza Jordaan, and 15 other persons and companies are currently standing trial in the Mbombela High Court for multiple offences, Including illegal coal mining, environmental offences, theft, corruption, money laundering etc.

“Their criminal trial was postponed to the Middelburg High Court for trial from 3 to 28 November 2025,” she added.

The spokesperson said the prosecutorial body remains committed to supporting the work of law enforcement agencies in rooting out criminality.

“Illegal mining activities, coupled with money laundering, in South Africa, are a huge concern for the government, as also pronounced by the State President who last year deployed the South African Defence Force to assist the SAPS in eradicating the illegal mining activities and syndicates.

“Illegal mining amounts to the plundering of the most valuable natural resources of South Africa to the detriment of the fiscus and the broader public. It also destroys the beautiful South African natural environment and bona fide farming activities.

“The NPA is committed to assisting the SAPS, the South African government, and governments of foreign jurisdictions to eradicate this scourge of illegal mining and money laundering activities,” Nyuswa concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Road crashes and fatalities increase during festive season

Location: News

Road crashes and fatalities increase during festive season

While law enforcement maintained a constant presence throughout the festive season, conducting operations around the clock - the preliminary 2024/2025 Festive Season Statistics reveal a concerning increase in crashes and fatalities, primarily attributed to human behavior.

“Tragically, South Africa witnessed 1,502 deaths resulting from 1,234 fatal crashes during the 2024/25 festive season. The number of fatalities represents a year-on-year increase of 5.3% (70) compared to the 2023/24 festive season, with a 4.2% (50) increase in the number of crashes,” Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said during a media briefing, held in Pretoria, on Monday.

The preliminary 2024/2025 Festive Season Statistics indicate that 87% of crashes happened because of human behaviour, including hit-and-runs, jay-walking (pedestrians crossing or walking in the street or road unlawfully), fatigue, loss of control over vehicles, speed, drunken driving, and reckless overtaking.

“The number of people who died on our roads this festive season has increased because people continued to behave badly. In spite of our pleas and warnings, and notwithstanding our efforts to clamp down on irresponsible and reckless behaviour, it is clear that many road users – both drivers and pedestrians – continue to act without regard for the lives of others.

“Six provinces recorded increases in the number of fatalities in the 2024/25 festive season compared to 2023/24, namely KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Northern Cape and North West,” the Minister said.

The Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State recorded increases of 70, 54 and 21 fatalities as compared to 2023/24, while Gauteng, Western Cape and Mpumalanga recorded decreases of 76, 23 and 15 fatalities, respectively.

Concern over pedestrian fatalities

Creecy said pedestrian fatalities remain a huge concern, with 41% of all road fatalities being pedestrians.

The highest percentage of pedestrian fatalities were recorded in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, which are the most populous provinces in the country in terms of vehicles and people.

Gauteng had the highest pedestrian fatalities at 63.84% followed by Western Cape with 53.9% and KwaZulu-Natal with 44.33%.

During this period, law enforcement conducted joint operations in line with the focus areas, including vehicle road worthiness, public passenger transport, drunken driving, execution of warrants of arrest, and speed law enforcement.

Law enforcement officers issued 711,184 fines for various traffic offences across the country.

“Some 23,607 fines were issued to drivers who failed to wear seatbelts, while another 16,925 motorists were fined for using cell phones while driving. Then, 16,527 vehicles were found to be unroadworthy and issued with traffic fines, as well as their motor vehicle licence discs removed, particularly in areas where vehicles could not be impounded due to lack of impoundment facilities,” the Minister said.

In total, 8,917 motor vehicles were impounded in areas where facilities were available.

“To clamp down on drunken driving, speeding and other moving violations, our officers arrested more than 9,550 motorists, with 3,840 individuals arrested for drunken driving.

“A total of 414 drivers were arrested for driving at high speed and five amongst them were driving at excessive speeds of between 200km/h to well above 240km/h,” Creecy said.

The highest speedster was arrested in Gauteng, driving at 245km/h (kilometre per hour) in a BMW Sedan on N1 near Honeydew, on 18 December 2024.

“We, South Africans, must change our behaviour on the roads. As we said at the beginning of the festive season, government and our law enforcement agencies cannot do it on our own.

“The statistics clearly send all of us, as South Africans, one message: Drivers and pedestrians must change their behaviour. We must obey the law, we must obey the basic rules of the road,” Creecy said.

Interventions

The Minister has asked the provinces to conduct a detailed analysis of their respective statistics, and come up with a clear plan for the way forward, by the end of January.

This will include a look at severe consequences for those who continue to show a disregard for road safety.

“We will continue to direct our efforts at changing the behaviour of road users, invest in designing and engineering safer roads, enforcing safe speeds in high congestion areas, and enhancing emergency response systems and access to quality trauma care, which is essential to saving lives.

“By reducing response times and improving the availability of critical care, we can increase survival rates and reduce the long-term impacts of road traffic injuries. This initiative will require collaboration with the Department of Health, and other industry role-players,” she said.

Creecy said indications are that the implementation of 24/7 traffic policing shifts is more critical than ever.

“During the festive season, we agreed to release National Traffic Police resources to provinces, to intensify road safety communication and education campaigns and strengthen monitoring of our law enforcement operations especially at night.

"This approach will serve as a blueprint for our road safety activities but will only succeed if it is consistent all year round, especially on weekends and in every province across the country,” the Minister said. -SAnews.gov.za

Manhunt for Stilfontein underground 'kingpin' after escaping police custody

North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, has ordered maximum resources to be mobilised in finding an alleged Stilfontein mining kingpin.

This comes after James Neo Tshoaeli, known as “Tiger”, allegedly escaped from the police custody, after resurfacing from the mine shaft 11 at Stilfontein, last week.

In a statement issued on Monday, Asaneng said extensive investigations and tracing operations were underway to find the officials who aided Tiger’s escape between shaft 11 and the Stilfontein police holding cells.

“According to records, Tiger was never booked into various other stations where some illegal miners are being kept. Tiger is also not admitted at a local hospital for further medical care,” Asaneng said.

The alleged kingpin and ringleader is a Lesotho national and according to records, his name is James Neo Tshoaeli but is commonly known as Tiger.

According to the Acting Commissioner, Tiger is being fingered in several statements as one of the ring leaders who controlled operations underground.

“He is also being accused by some illegal miners who resurfaced underground as being allegedly responsible for some deaths, assault, and torture that is alleged to have taken place according to videos in police possession. He is also alleged to have hoarded and kept food away from other illegal miners,” Asaneng said.

Asaneng has expressed disappointment in what he terms as an “embarrassment to the Vala Umgodi operation that has been running from December 2023”.

He warned that heads would roll once they find the officials that aided the kingpin to escape from police custody.

“Tiger is a fugitive of justice and is considered dangerous. Members of the public are advised to share any information pertaining to his whereabouts to the Stilfontein Police Station,” Asaneng said. – SAnews.gov.za

KZN Premier condemns brutal killing of five men in Inanda

KZN Premier condemns brutal killing of five men in Inanda

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has strongly condemned the brutal killing of five young men in the Bhambayi area of Inanda, north of Durban.

This follows an incident which took place in the early hours of Friday, sending shockwaves through the community.

According to preliminary police reports, the officers responded to reports of multiple murders, and discovered three bodies at a local sports ground in a nearby school.

Two additional bodies were found a kilometre away at another open field.

The victims, aged between 19 and 26, were reportedly abducted from their homes around midnight. Their bodies were found with multiple injuries, including one victim who had an arm chopped off.

Police suspect a bush knife was used in the attacks, though the motive remains unknown at this stage.

Ntuli has called for an urgent and thorough investigation into this heinous crime.

"The senseless and barbaric killing of these young men is deeply disturbing and unacceptable. These were our children, some of whom should have been celebrating their matric results, while others should be preparing for higher education.

“I am confident that the dedicated members of the South African Police Service, under the leadership of Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi [in KwaZulu-Natal], will move swiftly to arrest those responsible, and ensure they face the full might of the law," Ntuli said.

The Premier also appealed to the community of Inanda and surrounding areas to come forward with any information that could assist law enforcement in tracking down the perpetrators.

"I urge members of the community safety structures and the broader public to collaborate with the police. Let us work together to ensure that those who commit such horrific crimes are brought to justice. We must not shield criminals in our communities," Ntuli said.

Ntuli further expressed concern over the persistently high crime levels in Inanda, which has been identified as one of the province’s most crime-affected areas in the latest third quarter crime statistics.

He emphasised that such violent incidents undermine government efforts to create a safer and more secure environment for all citizens.

The Premier reaffirmed the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government’s commitment to intensifying crime prevention strategies and strengthening partnerships between law enforcement agencies and communities.

Ntuli has extended his deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims during this tragic time. – SAnews.gov.za
