Concern over fire incident at Lancea Vale secondary School

Gauteng Education, Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation MEC, Matome Chiloane, has expressed concern about a fire incident at Lancea Vale Secondary School in Eldorado Park.

According to a statement released by the department, the fire resulted in significant damage to three classrooms within the Grade 8 and Grade 9 block.

The incident took place on Tuesday.

“It is indeed concerning that last week Wednesday there was a stabbing incident of a learner by another learner at the same school. We will not tolerate violence or gangsterism perpetuated in around and our schools. In the same breath, we are closely monitoring the situation, and we are certain that learning and teaching will resume accordingly at the school,” MEC Chiloane said.

The department reported that preliminary reports indicate that the fire initially started in Room 81, located on the first floor of Block C.

The fire spread rapidly, completely gutting three classrooms, and the structural safety of the building which is now a concern.

The department said that firefighters will provide a report on the extent of the damage, for a decision to be taken on whether it will be safe to continue with teaching and learning at the affected block of classroom.

The police are also investigating circumstances surrounding the incident. – SAnews.gov.za

Four Eskom employees, contractor security guard arrested for theft of heavy fuel oil

Four Eskom employees, contractor security guard arrested for theft of heavy fuel oil

Eskom has confirmed the arrest of four employees and a contractor security guard, in connection with the theft of heavy fuel oil, valued at R500 000 from the Camden Power Station.

According to an official statement, the accused have been charged and are detained at Ermelo Police Station after they were arrested on Friday, 10 August 2024, at midnight.

This is after two Eskom weighbridge operators were apprehended for their alleged role in colluding to steal heavy fuel oil and defraud the company.

“The investigation began during a routine quality inspection of coal deliveries at Camden Power Station, conducted by Eskom’s Security Investigation team.

“A suspicious truck attempting to leave the station was intercepted, and the driver was asked to park on the side of the road. Upon presenting a weighbridge slip, the driver claimed that 30 610 kilograms of heavy fuel oil had been offloaded at Camden Power Station.

“However, a subsequent inspection revealed that the truck was still fully loaded with the fuel oil. The driver fled the scene, triggering further investigations that led to the arrests,” the State-owned utility explained.

Following further investigations on 16 August 2024, authorities arrested two more Eskom employees, a weighbridge operator and a control room operator as well as a contractor security guard.

According to Eskom, all the accused remain in custody, as the case has been remanded to 27 August 2024 for a formal bail application.

Eskom’s Acting General Manager for Security, Botse Sikhwitshi, said the organisation is committed to safeguarding the security and integrity of its critical infrastructure.

“The ongoing collaboration between Eskom’s internal security investigations team and law enforcement agencies, coordinated by the National Energy Crisis Committee’s (NECOM) Safety and Security Priority Committee, is yielding positive results in our efforts to combat crime and corruption,” she explained.

Sikhwitshi said while most of their employees are hardworking and dedicated to enhancing Eskom’s performance, they are fully committed to eradicating corruption.

“The recent arrests are a positive step in our ongoing efforts to eliminate criminal activities within our organisation, reaffirming Eskom’s zero-tolerance approach to crime and corruption,” Sikhwitshi added.

Eskom is urging the public to report any unlawful activities, such as fraud, illegal electricity sales, theft of coal, fuel oil, and diesel, and crimes targeting critical infrastructure.

“These reports help Eskom eradicate crime and corruption, potentially saving thousands of rands, as demonstrated in this case,” the statement read.

Reports can be made anonymously via the Eskom Crime Line at 0800 11 27 22 or through WhatsApp at 081 333 3323. – SAnews.gov.za

Eskom removes illegally connected transformers in Gauteng

Eskom removes illegally connected transformers in Gauteng

Eskom, in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, has removed over 35 illegally connected transformers in Gauteng’s Diepsloot Extension 6.

“This joint operation is part of Eskom’s ongoing efforts to reclaim its network and alleviate the strain caused by unauthorised and illegal electricity connections,” the State-owned power utility said of Tuesday’s removal.

In the 2022/23 financial year, Eskom said it suffered non-technical losses of around R5 billion due to illegal connections, meter bypasses, and other electricity-related criminal activities within its supply area.

The utility has lamented that these unauthorised practices undermine its financial health and its ability to provide a reliable electricity supply to lawful customers.

Meanwhile, according to Eskom, illegally connected transformers not only destabilise the network, causing frequent supply interruptions, extended outages and substandard service for paying customers, but it also poses significant safety risks to their technicians working on the system.

Eskom’s Group Executive for Distribution, Monde Bala, expressed deep appreciation for the collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Red Ants, Eskom Protective Services, and the private security companies in ensuring the success of this operation.

“These efforts are crucial in safeguarding Eskom’s assets, ensuring public safety, and mitigating the severe energy losses caused by illegal connections, meter bypasses, and acts of theft and vandalism,” Bala added.

While most employees are dedicated and committed to delivering their daily job outputs and striving to enhance Eskom’s performance, the organisation stated that it maintains a clear stance of zero tolerance towards crime and corruption.

“Consequently, we are currently investigating allegations from community leaders that some Eskom employees are allegedly involved in the sale of illegal transformers. We will update community leaders on the outcomes of these investigations once they are concluded.”

Eskom has since called on all communities to refrain from engaging in any illegal activities related to electricity.
Members of the public are encouraged to report illegal connections, meter bypasses, and any suspicious activities to the Eskom Crime Line at 0800 11 27 22 or via WhatsApp at 081 333 3323.

Additionally, anyone with information regarding the involvement of Eskom employees in illegal activities is urged to report anonymously for further investigation. – SAnews.gov.za

SAPS celebrates its women in blue

SAPS celebrates its women in blue

This year, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is observing Women's Month by celebrating its women in blue, who do not only bring inclusivity and empathy to the table, but who also go beyond the call of duty to serve and protect the people of South Africa.

Today, SAPS introduces the nation to Sergeant Silindile Njilo, a crime prevention member attached to the Ntuzuma police station in KwaZulu-Natal.

Njilo and baby “Tholakele” captured the hearts and minds of the nation when a video clip of them trended on social media platforms earlier this year. Loosely translated, the name Tholakele means ‘being found'. The real identity of the toddler is being withheld.

Little did Njilo know how her day shift would unfold when she reported for duty on 05 May 2024 and found an abandoned baby girl at the Client Service Centre (CSC). The baby was brought to the police station during the previous shift by the owner of a local tavern after the biological mother had left the baby at his establishment.

Wasting no time, Njilo went home to get a wash basin and returned back to the police station where she bathed Tholakele, changed her into a new set of clothes and fed her while waiting for social services to arrive.

It was as if the baby instinctively realised that she was safe in the arms of Njilo and a bond immediately formed between them.

Baby Tholakele, a name Njilo gave her, has since been placed at a place of safety. Njilo visits often and says she continues to love and care for Tholakela as if she were one of her own.

Njilo, a devoted wife and mother of two, also says her act of humility that day was merely a reflection of her humble upbringing as she knows how it feels to 'come from nothing'.

Her mother single handedly raised Njilo and her siblings with no steady income. Njilo says she will never forget her late mother's words: "Be a light and take care of those who need help".

She often takes out money from her own pocket to buy basic essentials and food to support poverty-stricken community members.

Joining the Service 14 years ago was a dream come true for Njilo, as she believes there is no greater calling than to be of service to her community.

As a crime prevention member, her duties include dealing with general enquiries and complaints lodged by the public, attend to crime scenes, effecting arrests and detaining suspects as well as carrying out patrol duties.

"I urge our community members to support and stand alongside members of the South African Police Service. Because, together we can achieve more towards a safer country for all," said Njilo.

Nothing short of a heroine, Sergeant Njilo continues to be a shining light in the community she serves. – SAnews.gov.za

Government committed to media responses

Government committed to media responses

Government has, in a statement on Tuesday, said it noted concerns about non-responsiveness or late responses from government communicators to media queries.

This follows a media article published by BusinessTech on Monday, where they reached out to all government ministries for comment via email and only received a 37.5% response rate.

“The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) as the custodian of sound relations between government and media is committed to continuous improved relations with various media houses, journalists and media bodies such as the South African National Editors Forum, (SANEF), Association of Independent Publishers (AIP), National Community Radio Forum ( NCRF) and the Press Council,” said the GCIS.

It said the concerns raised by various stakeholders on the non-responsiveness or late responding to media queries have been taken seriously and engagements have been held to ensure a harmonious environment.

“…However this work continues as often communicators and media liaison officers move between different organisations, thus leading to a possible lapse of communication during transitioning of personnel.

“The GCIS is committed to addressing this challenge by ensuring that all communicators are oriented and au fait with good media relations practices as outlined in the government communications policy approved by cabinet in 2018,” the organisation said.

It urged media who experience challenges with media queries to contact its media engagement officials who will assist in ensuring that communicators are responding timeously with reasonable engagement between them and the journalists about deadlines and adequate responses. – SAnews.gov.za

Tributes continue for Prof Muxe Nkondo

Tributes continue for Prof Muxe Nkondo

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Prof Blade Nzimande, has expressed his shock and great sadness at the news of the passing away of Professor Muxe Nkondo.

Nkondo, who passed away at the age of 83 on Sunday, has been described as a friend, colleague, and fellow intellectual in the struggle against apartheid and the development of the democratic order in the post-1994 period.

“Prof Nkondo has a special place in the history of both the struggles leading up to the fall of apartheid and the emergence of a democratic order in the early 1990s.

“I remember him as a radical scholar, organic intellectual, activist, and a leading figure amongst the first generation of Vice-Chancellors who led our higher education system through its difficult first decades of transformation,” the Minister’s statement read.

According to Nzimande, Nkondo placed great importance on the recognition of African liberation as a process of not only overcoming the legacies of political disempowerment but one of cultural, social, economic and intellectual emancipation.

“In other words, for him, attainment of formal, political rights must be matched by transformations in all other aspects of human life.”

The Professor was said to be deeply influenced by radical post-independence and liberation thinkers such as Walter Rodney, Franz Fanon, Amilcar Cabral, CLR James and Steve Biko.

“He framed the importance of cultural and intellectual freedom at the centre of his work – an orientation that perhaps explains his lifelong commitment to higher education and intellectual work which spanned a wide range of fronts, from higher education, arts and culture, public administration, rural development civil society and economic development.”

The late academic occupied senior roles as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of the North and Vice-Chancellor of Venda University.

He was also a leading figure in the association of historically Black universities and campaigned relentlessly for recognition of their distinctive role and place within the higher education landscape, and redress and equity.

At the University of Venda, according to the department, Nkondo pioneered a vision emphasising the rural development mission of the university, rooted in its social context.

He also promoted a science, technology and innovation agenda of the university that tackled pressing development issues such as water security, food production, sanitation, small business development and cultural production, working closely with local communities.

Indigenous Knowledge Systems

The Professor also served as Chairperson of the technical team and reference group that drafted the Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) National Policy for the Department of Science and Technology (DSI).

“It is hard to pigeon-hole the intellectual contribution of Prof Nkondo as he was truly a polymath, whose contributions spanned a stunning range of areas including science and technology, higher education, arts and culture, public administration, human settlements, tourism, and rural development.”

According to the Minister, he was not only an African intellectual focusing on the local and national questions of development in South Africa but was also, par excellence, a pan-African intellectual who worked actively across the continent to advance a new African agenda for the African Union (AU) and New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).

He was among 500 African scholars invited by the AU in 2004 to Dakar, Senegal, to speak on the role of intellectuals in Africa’s development.

“The Department of Science and Innovation will surely miss his seminal contributions to our understanding of the role of science and technology in the emancipation of South Africa’s most marginalised communities.”

Nzimande stated that his contributions to IKS continue to resonate in the DSI’s White Paper on Science and Innovation and Decadal Plan.

Special ConCourt sitting for Chief Justice Zondo

Special ConCourt sitting for Chief Justice Zondo

The Constitutional Court is expected to hold a special ceremonial sitting for outgoing Chief Justice Raymond Zondo on Wednesday morning.

Chief Justice Zondo is expected to leave the bench at the end of August following 27 years of service to the judiciary.

He will hand down his final judgement on the day.

“Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya, Justices of the Constitutional Court, Judicial Officers as well as representatives of the Executive, Parliament and the legal profession will participate in this event,” the Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) said in a statement.

Long serving

Chief Justice Zondo’s foray into practicing law began when he served articles under anti-Apartheid activist Victoria Mxenge before her assassination at the hands of Apartheid South Africa operatives.

Following that, he was a practising attorney in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, before his first approach to the bench just three years after the dawn of democracy.

“Justice Zondo…was appointed as a Judge of the Labour Court in 1997. In April 1999 he was appointed as a Judge of the then Transvaal Provincial Division of the High Court. He served for close to eleven years as Judge-President of the Labour Appeal Court and Labour Court. His ten-year term of office as Judge-President ended in April 2010,” the OCJ said.

Following 15 years on the lower benches, Chief Justice Zondo was then appointed as a Constitutional Court Justice in 2012.

“In June 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa. In January 2018 he was appointed as the Chairperson of the State Capture Commission, also known as the Zondo Commission.

“With effect from 1 April 2022 he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Republic. For the past two and a half years he has led the Judiciary of this country with great success. His term of office comes to an end on 31 August 2024,” the statement said.

Leading researchers to be acknowledged at 2024 NRF Awards

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Professor Blade Nzimande, will address the prestigious National Research Foundation (NRF) Awards at the Sun City Resort, North West, on Thursday.

The NRF, an entity of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), funds research and the development of high-end human capacity and critical research infrastructure to promote knowledge production across all disciplinary fields.

This year’s event is significant as it marks 25 years of the NRF promoting research, innovation and partnerships that contribute to building an inclusive, knowledge-based society in South Africa.

The annual awards are a highlight of the academic calendar, drawing together the leading lights of local and international academia.

The ceremony recognises the scientists behind groundbreaking research conducted at South Africa’s higher education institutions.

The awards are presented in two categories, these include the special awards that recognise extraordinary contributions to the South African knowledge base.

The finalists in this category include three DSI-NRF Centres of Excellence – Human Development, Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis, and Biomedical TB Research.

The second category is the NRF ratings-based awards, which are based on a rigorous peer review system that evaluates the research impact of nominees over the past five years.

“Each year several researchers have their research output peer-reviewed and are given ratings by the NRF,” a statement by the department read.

These ratings fall under the categories of A (leading international researchers), B (internationally acclaimed researchers), C (established researchers), P (prestigious awards) or Y (promising young researchers).

“These ratings recognise these researchers’ standing in their fields as well as the world-leading nature of their work. To obtain an A rating, a researcher must be recognised by their peers as a leading international scholar in their field.”

In addition, an A-rated researcher must be based on the high quality and high impact of their recent research output.

Meanwhile, the P rating is awarded to researchers who, based on exceptional potential demonstrated in research performance and output during doctoral and/or early post-doctoral careers, are considered likely to become future international leaders in their respective fields.

#WomensMonth: SAPS honours outstanding veterinary nurse

This year, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is observing Women's Month by highlighting the work of its women in blue, who are not only game changers in their respective fields, but who also go beyond the call of duty to serve and protect South Africans and visitors.

Today, the SAPS introduces the nation to Captain Mariaan Nel, a qualified veterinary nurse attached to the SAPS Veterinary Services in Bloemfontein, Free State.

The Veterinary Services is a specialised unit that resides within the component, Visible Policing and Operations.

Nel joined the service 13 years ago as a veterinary nurse at the rank of captain shortly after she obtained a National Diploma in Veterinary Nursing from the University of Pretoria. She also holds a degree in Accounting.

She is one of five female veterinary nurses in the Service and currently the only nurse based in the Free State province as part of a pilot project. In total, there are eight veterinary nurses nationwide in the SAPS.

As a veterinary nurse in the SAPS, Nel's duties include the following:

* Execute primary health care support to SAPS animals;

* Monitor the primary health status of SAPS animals and report epidemiological phenomena;

* Conduct veterinary inspections at SAPS K9 and Mounted Units; and

* Present veterinary and animal handling courses to SAPS members

Being based in Bloemfontein, Nel travels vast distances to ensure the welfare of 37 dogs and nine horses attached to the various K9 and Mounted Units within the Free State.

Police dogs and horses not only enhance police visibility but they are also deployed during crime prevention operations. They assist with investigations on crime scenes, trace suspects, detect narcotics and assist with search and rescue operations.

Nel says her profession may not place her at the forefront of fighting crime, but it gives her satisfaction to ensure the SAPS’s four-legged crime fighting heroes stay in tip top shape.

"I am passionate about the well-being of animals, in particular SAPS animals. I encourage girls and young women to pursue a career in the police, as it is rewarding to know your services make a valuable contribution towards a safer country for all," said Nel.

A dog may be a man’s best friend, but Captain Nel is certainly any SAPS dog and horse’s best friend. – SAnews.gov.za

Tugboats position KZN as preferred logistics and transport hub

Tugboats position KZN as preferred logistics and transport hub

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli says the introduction of tugboats is not only a boost for the provincial port, but a significant advancement for the province’s economy, particularly within the logistics and maritime sectors.

Ntuli was speaking at the recent christening and naming ceremony of five new tugboats at the Port of Durban, hosted by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Eastern Region.

The ceremony marked a major milestone in the TNPA Marine Fleet Renewal Programme, a key component of Transnet’s broader Recovery Plan aimed at enhancing shipping efficiencies across South African ports.

The five newly acquired tugboats are set to be injected into the port’s operations, reinforcing the Marine Fleet Renewal Programme’s objectives of increasing marine craft availability and ensuring smoother, more efficient port operations.

This strategic initiative aligns with Transnet’s mission to revitalise its infrastructure and strengthen the country’s logistics network.

Ntuli congratulated the TNPA on this critical acquisition, emphasising the importance of modernising port infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of the maritime industry.

“The introduction of the tugboats is not only a boost for the port, but a significant advancement for the province’s economy, particularly within the logistics and maritime sectors. This initiative positions KwaZulu-Natal as the preferred logistics and transport hub in South Africa.

“Strategic investments, such as the R1 billion allocated to enhancing the Durban Port, are vital to driving economic growth and creating much-needed employment opportunities in our province," Ntuli said.

Ntuli said both the Durban and Richards Bay ports are primed to become preferred gateways for cargo exports, bolstering KwaZulu-Natal’s economic competitiveness, and supporting South Africa’s global trade ambitions.

Journey toward economic recovery on course

Transnet Board Chairperson Andile Sangqu underscored the importance of the TNPA Marine Fleet Renewal Programme, noting that Transnet’s journey towards economic recovery is firmly on course.

With the advancements in operations and strategic initiatives, particularly through the Marine Fleet Renewal Programme, Sangqu said Transnet is witnessing significant progress in restoring and enhancing the efficiency of South Africa’s port infrastructure.

He said the successful implementation of these initiatives reflects Transnet’s commitment to fulfilling the objectives of the Transnet Recovery Plan.

“This plan is crucial to maintaining South Africa’s competitive edge in the global maritime industry and ensuring the country’s ports operate at world-class standards. The christening of these five tugboats marks a new chapter for the Port of Durban and sets the foundation for further advancements in the province’s maritime capabilities.

“With KwaZulu-Natal’s strategic location and ongoing investments in port infrastructure, the province is well-positioned to become a leader in logistics and transportation, driving economic growth and fostering international trade,” Sangqu said. – SAnews.gov.za

Emergency work on the fourth Riverlands dam

Location: News

Emergency work on the fourth Riverlands dam

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) says the fourth dam - upstream of Riverlands in the Swartlands Local Municipality - has been cleared through a side channel spillway created to prevent a more catastrophic collapse of the dam wall.

The department said during an inspection on 12 August 2024, it was established that there is a progressing piping failure (on the downstream slope) at the highest section of the dam wall.

“The integrity of the dam was compromised and hence the possibility of failure was detected.

"Subsequently, the decision was taken to empty the dam to protect the lives of the community members living downstream.

“The emptying of the dam through the spillway was planned to drain the dam during daytime (from 10am to 4pm), to ensure that the increased outflow from the dam would occur during day light, to enabled it to be managed more easily,” the department said in a statement.

The department said, should Dam 4 failed late in the evening or early morning hours while the public downstream was asleep, the consequences could have been far worse.

The department noted that the fourth dam emptied faster than anticipated, however, the public was precautionarily evacuated, hence no injuries and loss of life were reported.

“The members of the public, who were evacuated, have returned to their homes and the dam wall of Dam 4 has not failed. Very little additional damage was caused by the release of water from Dam 4.

“The damage to infrastructure was caused by the floods of the dam breaks of the previous three dams during the early hours of last week,” the department said.

The department reiterated its commitment to safeguard the lives of the public during emergency conditions, although this sometimes results in difficult decisions having to be taken, including the precautionary evacuation of people if deemed necessary,” the department said.

Investigation into dams failure extended

Meanwhile, Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina, has granted the departmental engineers an extra week to conduct diligent and adequate investigation into the reason behind the failure of three farm dams located in Riverlands.

This follows the failure of three farm dams located in Riverlands that breached, resulting in flooding that caused severe property and infrastructure damage to the affected area, leading to hundreds of people being provided with humanitarian assistance.

Majodina visited the area on 11 August 2024 to get a first-hand information of the disastrous occurrence and was briefed by the team of engineers dispatched by the department to normalise the situation in the area.

The Minister then instituted an investigation on the breach of the three dams and whether the owners of the dams have proper authorisation from the department.

A report was expected in seven days from the day of Majodina’s visit.

Whilst the team on the ground has been working around the clock to expedite the compilation of the report requested by the Minister, the department emphasised that it has to balance the investigation work with its intervention )to mitigate the risk of the failure of the fourth dam, which was at a risk of severe damage as well.

“The department mobilised the construction team currently working at Clanwilliam Dam project for additional capacity to lower the risk of failure of the fourth dam. Furthermore, the department assessed the likelihood of failure of other dams in the area due to persistent rains and a saturated catchment which could have led to other dams reaching their maximum storage capacity,” the department said.

The Department of Water and Sanitation is committed in conducting its regulatory function diligently and depending on the outcomes of the investigation, those responsible for the failure of the three dams will be held accountable. – SAnews.gov.za

Government and communities must come together to fight GBV

Government and communities must come together to fight GBV

Active citizenry and the active involvement of communities have an important role to play in fighting the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

This according to Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Andries Nel, who was speaking during the launch of the Mitchell’s Plain Thuthuzela Care Centre on Monday.

Nel explained that Mitchell’s Plain has South Africa’s highest prevalence of crimes like common assault, drug related crimes, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition attempted murder – breeding a dangerous environment for women.

“This explains the environment within which GBVF is taking place. It also underscores the point… that our Justice, Crime Prevention and Security cluster, our criminal justice system, has an indispensable role to play.

“But the reality is, there’s a social and economic foundation to these problems, which we are not going to solve without a broader socio-economic transformation of our country, our communities but also the active involvement of each and every citizen,” Nel said.

The Deputy Minister said as communities are being urged to play their role, government is also doing its part in passing new laws and amending legislation that “aims to bring about changes, which are practically implementable and offer meaningful protection to those who need it”.

Those three new laws are:

  • the Criminal Law Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act;

  • the Criminal and Related Matters Amendment Act, and

  • the Domestic Violence Amendment Act.

“This legislation, amongst others, addressed the need to include the particulars of all sex offenders and not only sex offenders against children and persons who are mentally disabled. It also expanded the list of persons who are to be protected to include other vulnerable persons.

“It also increases the period for which a sex offender’s particulars must remain on the register before it can be removed. It also creates a reporting duty that any person who has knowledge, reasonable belief or suspects that a sexual offence is being committed against a person who’s vulnerable must report…immediately to a police official.

“The Domestic Violence Amendment Act… has also been amended to address practical challenges, gaps and anomalies which have been in the Act since 1999. The amended legislation has included new definitions [of abuse] such as controlling behaviour and coercive behaviour,” he said.

Nel said government is also working to ensure that the number of TCCs – which provide crucial medical and psychosocial support to victims – is increased throughout the country.

“That’s why we must endeavour to increase the number of TCCs as quickly as possible. The new Mitchell’s Plain TCC will increase the national footprint to 65 across the country. This is the tenth TCC in the Western Cape.

“There are a number of TCCs that are ready to open and start operations but they need input from other departments and we commit ourselves to facilitate that engagement,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA journalists scoop two awards at SADC Media Awards

Government has congratulated the two South African journalists who won in two categories in this year’s Southern African Development Community (SADC) Media Awards.

Fikile Necter Marakalla was the second prize winner in the Photo Category with her pictures that were published in SA News and Diplomatic Informer.

Marakalla’s winning entry highlighted the strong fraternal, historical as well as social relations between South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania during the State visit of her Excellency Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Meanwhile, Tshimologo Benjamin Moshatama from Channel Africa Radio was the second prize winner in the Radio Category with his entry on the importance of shared water resources in the SADC regional integration and development as well as the contribution of the Kingdom of Lesotho in the management of shared water resources.

The SADC Media Awards present a unique opportunity for the SADC region’s journalists to be celebrated and recognised by their peers.

“The media plays a critical role in promoting regional integration in the region. We encourage more South African journalists to cover stories that promote regional integration,” Government Communications and Information System (GCIS) Acting Director-General Nomonde Mnukwa said on Monday.

Government has called on media practitioners in South Africa and the region to share their stories that focus on economic well-being, improvement of the standard of living and quality of life, freedom and social justice, peace and security for the people of Southern Africa.

“Media practitioners are encouraged to continually ensure that we popularise projects that are underway in the SADC region. Africa and the region must tell her own stories. It is important that we hear from a range of voices from our diverse nations. By telling our own stories, we will bridge divides between SADC nations,” GCIS said.

The SADC Media Awards are aimed at promoting excellence in the fields of Print Journalism, Radio Journalism, Television Journalism and Photojournalism.

“The SADC Media Awards serve as a link for coordination and synchronization between formal structures of SADC member states and media. They further seek to bring and enhance partnership between media and government institutions. South Africa’s participation at SADC is guided by the SADC Treaty. The SADC Treaty guides all Member States within the regional bloc,” GCIS said.

The Treaty encourages the people of the region and their institutions to take initiatives to develop economic, social and cultural ties.

GCIS is responsible for the implementation of the SADC Media Awards on behalf of South Africa.

“GCIS would also like to acknowledge the excellent work done by the judges who make up South Africa’s chapter of the SADC Media Awards in our National Adjudication Committee (NAC).

“These members are drawn from seasoned and experienced media professionals who give freely of their time and expertise to ensure that we can confidently submit entries of the highest standard to the regional competition,” the GCIS said. -SAnews.gov.za

Thuthuzela Care Centres crucial part of ending GBV scourge

Thuthuzela Care Centres crucial part of ending GBV scourge

The National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Shamila Batohi, says Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCC) are crucial to the fight against gender-based violence (GBV).

Batohi was delivering an address at the launch of a TCC at Mitchell’s Plain in the Western Cape, on Monday.

TCCs are a one stop-facility for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), where they are able to receive psycho-social support, medical treatment and legal services.

“By providing better quality of services, we do find that there is improved reporting. In 2020/21, when we had 60 TCCs, there were just short of 30 000 cases that were reported. In 22/23, there were 36 800 cases or there about, and this figure represents an increase of 24.3% in a two-year period. In the past eight years combined, the TCCs have dealt with 266 593 matters at all of its sites. These are only reported cases.

“We’ve noted improvements in the conviction rates. Since 2010, the conviction rate has improved from 60% to the current 77.5% as at the end of December 2023… and it’s all about the services that are being rendered that help victims to be able to go through the court processes.

“We’ve also noted an increase in long term sentences that are imposed by the courts. For the past two years, up to December 2023, the courts imposed 337 life imprisonment sentences, 236 sentences of between 20 to 25 years and 624 sentences of 10 to 15 years imprisonment,” she said.

Despite the upward progress, Batohi emphasised that the courts merely deal with crimes that have been committed and that dealing with the roots of GBV is crucial.

“When victims come into these facilities, the offences are already committed and we try to help them on their journey towards healing but it’s not going to solve the problem. That is why the importance of our councillors, community based persons, civil society in really trying to deal with the scourge.

“That is why we all need to help to instill the right values particularly in men. Unless we actually deal with [GBV] in a wholistic way, we are not going to be able to deal with the scourge. Notwithstanding that, we continue to try to make sure that…we help the victims on their journey towards becoming survivors,” Batohi said. – SAnews.gov.za

Let’s harness improved confidence to drive inclusive growth – President

Let’s harness improved confidence to drive inclusive growth - President

President Cyril Ramaphosa says government remains committed to collaborating with business, labour unions, and other social partners to advance the structural reforms necessary for fostering inclusive economic growth and creating jobs.

The President said this in his weekly newsletter to the nation on Monday.

“We cannot rebuild our country unless all South Africans work together. We will continue to work with business, labour and other social partners to drive the structural reform process that will boost inclusive economic growth and jobs.

“There is indeed an air of optimism in our country. Let us harness this confidence and goodwill to increase the momentum of our shared efforts to build and strengthen our economy,” the President said.

President Ramaphosa highlighted that over the last few months, the country has seen a growing confidence among investors, business and citizens over the prospects of the economy.

The latest Business Confidence Index published by the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) points to an increase in business confidence since the elections in May.

The President noted that this sentiment is evident in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s All-Share Price Index, which increased by about 8% from the end of May to the end of July 2024.

“This is welcome news, particularly in light of the most recent employment figures released by Statistics South Africa, which show that unemployment remains extremely high at 33.5%.

“Business confidence is so important to our efforts to create jobs because it signals an improved business environment and encourages new investment. Greater investment in the economy enables faster growth and more job opportunities,” he said.

For several years, the country has experienced low levels of business confidence, having been negatively affected by the prolonged electricity crisis, State capture, concerns about corruption, the decline of State-owned enterprises and the manner in which law enforcement agencies had been compromised.

President Ramaphosa further reflected that investors have also been concerned about obstacles to growth, such as delays in the release of broadband spectrum, inefficiencies in ports and rail operations, and regulations that have slowed down licensing processes.

The President lauded the successful holding of the national and provincial elections in May and the formation of the Government of National Unity, both of which have had a positive effect on business confidence.

He said the progress that has been recorded in the reform process thus far has also contributed to the improved sentiment.

Rooting out corruption

To create a conducive environment, the President said government has shown its determination to tackle corruption.

Bodies like the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Hawks have brought several high-profile cases to trial. The permanent establishment of the NPA’s Investigating Directorate has also given further impetus to the fight against corruption.

Crime is also being tackled. Across the country, the President said, initiatives such as Operation Shanela have upped the war on crime.

“We are clamping down on illicit mining operations. Criminal syndicates involved in cable theft and extortion at construction sites are being dealt with.

“Through a concerted effort from all stakeholders, we have confronted the electricity crisis. We have now had more than 140 consecutive days without load shedding. There has been a huge increase in new power generation capacity.

“Investors have seen the growth opportunities in the far-reaching energy reforms we are undertaking. Just last week, I signed into law the Electricity Regulation Amendment Act, which will enable the establishment of a competitive electricity market,” the President said.

The progress made in electricity provision, he said, gives confidence that the country can overcome the problems on the freight rail lines and ports.

Transnet’s recovery plan is showing progress, with the private sector providing significant technical support and resources to Transnet Freight Rail and Port Terminals.

In Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, newly launched state-of-the-art passenger trains are now operating along refurbished and reopened rail corridors, offering commuters faster and more affordable transportation options.

This development is expected to significantly reduce commuting times and costs for users.

Reforms and investment

Additionally, government has implemented changes to immigration regulations to attract skilled professionals, investment and tourists to South Africa.

Approval processes for water use licences and energy projects have been expedited, and the release of broadband spectrum aims to unlock the full potential of the telecommunications sector.

These reforms are set to drive economic growth and enhance the country’s global competitiveness.

The country is also making progress on infrastructure investment. According to Nedbank’s Capital Expenditure Project Listing, the value of fixed investment project announcements in the first half of this year rose to approximately R800 billion.

This was up sharply from just over R190 billion in 2023.

The public sector accounts for most of these projects in areas such as energy, transportation, health facility upgrades, roads and housing.

“As government, we held a meeting with business leaders last week. Business expressed optimism about the recovery and growth of our economy. They committed themselves to a new era of partnership with government. We agreed on key actions we must now take to build on the progress that has already been made,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za

Zambian national linked to kidnappings arrested at OR Tambo

An alleged kidnapping ringleader and suspect linked to a R300 million drug bust has been intercepted at OR Tambo International Airport.

The 40-year-old Zambian national was intercepted as he arrived in the country on Sunday morning.
“Police have been keeping a close watch on the suspect’s movement. The suspect is believed to be one of the ringleaders behind a kidnapping for ransom syndicate targeting businessmen in South Africa,” said the South African Police Service (SAPS) in a statement.

He is specifically linked to the kidnapping of a 63-year-old businessman who was kidnapped in Helderkruin, Roodepoort in July.

He was rescued on the same day that police made the discovery of R300 million worth of crystal meth at two properties in Fourways and a hotel in Bruma.

He is also believed to be a key figure in the R300 million crystal meth drugs that were seized.

Police have been tracking the suspect and upon arrival at the OR Tambo Airport, he was arrested by a multidisciplinary team led by SAPS anti-kidnapping task team, counter intelligence, detectives, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department K-9 unit, Flying Squad and private security.

The suspect is expected to be charged with eight other suspects who were arrested for the kidnapping of the businessman and the drug bust. – SAnews.gov.za

Mpox is under control: Depart of Health

Location: News

Mpox is under control: Depart of Health

The Department of Health has assured South Africans that the current Mpox outbreak remains under control.

“However, this does not mean people should become complacent because we have learned from the COVID-19 pandemic that viruses are unpredictable as they mutate from time to time.”

According to the department, South Africa remains on high alert in case of a surge in Mpox cases and the emergence of new contagious strains.

The department has since called on citizens to play their part and support the country’s response efforts to prevent the spread of Mpox by maintaining nonpharmaceutical measures, including personal hygiene.

Meanwhile, various pharmaceutical interventions, including additional treatments and vaccines, are being considered. The decision will be based on epidemiological data, the department added.

The department also clarified that both the declarations by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) do not translate into trade and travel restrictions.

This is after the ongoing outbreak of Mpox has been officially declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the WHO.

The department said this serves as a clarion call for Member States, including South Africa, to work together, fast-track approval of Mpox vaccine and treatment while maintaining strict safety protocols, and ensuring these life-saving vaccines reach the most vulnerable populations to prevent the further spread of this infectious, but treatable disease.

South Africa is also working with various stakeholders, including the WHO County Office, National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and Border Management Authority (BMA) to intensify epidemiological and surveillance, contact tracing and health screening activities for case investigation and early detection of new positive cases in the country.

The total number of positive cases recorded in the country as of Sunday, 18 August 2024, stands at 24 including three deaths, 19 recoveries and two active cases undergoing home isolation.

Twelve cases were reported in Gauteng, 11 in KwaZulu-Natal and one in the Western Cape.

“The department will keep the public updated on the situation and response efforts, including as and when there are new developments.

“We encourage businesses and organisations with operations in the affected countries to ensure [they] put measures in place to ensure their employees who regularly travel to and from South Africa, are well informed of Mpox; and are fit to travel.”

Symptoms

In addition, travellers experiencing Mpox-like symptoms should seek immediate medical attention and if possible, delay their travel until they are diagnosed or fully recovered to prevent possible cross-border transmission.

“We also urge all people who experience any of the Mpox symptoms, with or without international travel history to present themselves to a health facility for clinical observation and confine themselves to one place until their test results are available.”

The department stated that anyone can contract Mpox regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation and race.
“The current epidemiological data suggests that people living with HIV and men who have sex with men (MSM) are vulnerable to Mpox,” the department said, adding that those living with chronic medical conditions such as tuberculosis and diabetes are also at risk.

Some of the common symptoms of Mpox include a rash which may last for two to four weeks, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen glands.

According to the department, the painful rash looks like blisters or sores and can affect the face, palms of the hands, soles of the feet and groin. – SAnews.gov.za
