Spanish tourist killed by elephant at the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve in NW

The North West Parks and Tourism Board has confirmed that a male Spanish citizen was killed by an elephant at the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve after stepping out of the vehicle he was in, to take pictures. 

The tourist and his three friends were driving in their vehicle, when they came across a breeding herd of elephants that were feeding a distance from the road.

“According to eyewitnesses, the man decided to alight from the vehicle and approach the elephants on foot, taking pictures,” the statement read. 

Despite warnings from his fellow passengers, and other occupants from two other vehicles that were at the sighting, the guest allegedly did not heed their warnings. 

That is when an adult elephant cow charged at the man, and he then ran from the elephant. 

“He was unfortunately not able to escape or evade the elephant, which was now joined by the whole herd, and was caught and trampled to death. 

“The elephants moved away immediately from the scene without any aggression towards the nearby vehicles and eventually disappeared into the bushes.” 

According to the Board, park officials were alerted and immediately rushed to the scene to help and secure the scene. 

The officials also assisted the South African Police Service (SAPS) and authorities with the necessary procedures and investigation.

“Statements by witnesses who observed the whole incident further suggest that the female elephant that charged and attacked might have done so to protect the herd and young ones.” 

The case has since been handed to the police for further investigation.

“The dangerous and unpredictable nature of wild animals is always emphasised on the permits and booklets for sale in Pilanesberg. 

“Park officials and honorary rangers are also patrolling the park and tourist roads when the park is open.” 

According to the Board, tourists are always educated on the importance of remaining in the safety of their vehicle, respecting the distance between vehicles, allowing animals first right of passage, and only alighting in specially designated areas. 

In addition, rules and regulations of the park are printed on the entry permit which must be always adhered to, for the safety of guests and animals.

“The Board is very saddened by this tragic incident. We would like to express our sincere condolences to the deceased’s next of kin and friends. 

“We also send our appreciation to Sun City Resort for immediately availing relevant professionals to give counselling to the visibly traumatized friends of the deceased.” – SAnews.gov.za

Police recue two kidnapped victims in Benoni

Swift and agile action by the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) elite Special Task Force unit on Monday afternoon, led to the rescue of two kidnap victims at an informal settlement in Crystal Park, Benoni. 

A 64-year-old man and a 34-year-old man were kidnapped while driving along Putfontein Road in Crystal Park on Sunday.

According to the police, the kidnappers immediately began making ransom demands to their families.

The police were notified and a team, led by the Special Task Force, was mobilised.

On Monday afternoon, the team pounced on the kidnappers where a shootout ensued. One kidnapper was shot and killed; one was wounded and taken to hospital and the other four were arrested and taken into police custody.

“The SAPS assures communities that may become victims of this type of crime that it has the necessary expertise and capabilities to intercept and takedown syndicates involved in kidnappings where ransom demands are made,” said the police in a statement.

Last week, six kidnappers were arrested and two businessmen were rescued.

Communities are urged to immediately report to their nearest police station or call the Crime Stop hotline number 08600 10111 if any of their relatives or friends fall victim to kidnappers. – SAnews.gov.za

Arms cache, drugs discovered in Goodwood apartment

A suspect who was arrested at the weekend during a routine stop and search procedure by members of the police’s Flying Squad will make his first court appearance in Athlone in the Western Cape on Monday.

The suspect was discovered with an arms cache and a substantial quantity of drugs and arrested in Goodwood.

According to a statement by the South African Police Service (SAPS), vigilant Flying Squad members were drawn to a suspicious silver Ford double cab bakkie, which prompted them to stop and search the vehicle and the occupant.

The search resulted in the discovery of an unlicensed 9mm firearm, drugs and a substantial amount of cash.

The 28-year-old driver was arrested and interrogated which led the SAPS to an apartment in the Bergzicht complex, situated in Goodwood.

There a further 19 firearms of various calibers were found, including an AK47 assault rifle, a shotgun and other automatic and semi-automatic firearms, as well as an assortment of drugs valued at R3 million.

“We have reason to believe that the apartment, which is leased in the suspect’s name, was never used as a residence, but rather a storing facility for the firearms and the drugs,” the South African Police Service said in a statement.

“As our investigation unfolds, the possibility that more suspects can be apprehended is not excluded. The arrest of the suspect and subsequent seizure are deemed a step in the right direction to tackle gangsterism in the Province,” the police said.

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile commended the members who effected the arrest and said detectives assigned to the case will dig deeper to uncover more as “this could be the tip of the iceberg” in their investigation. – SAnews.gov.za

Illegal initiation schools shut in North West clampdown

Over 100 initiates were rescued when the North West Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) closed 17 illegal initiation schools throughout the province.

According to the provincial department, this was made possible through collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC). 

“The shutting down of the schools follows the extensive oversight visits conducted by the PICC across the province, to clamp down on illegal initiation schools since the beginning of the 2024 winter initiation season in line with Section 15 of the Customary Initiation Act No 2 of 2021 (CIA),” the provincial department explained. 

The committee was monitoring compliance in terms of Sections 20, 21, 23 and 24 of the CIA, verifying the qualifications and credentials of initiation school practitioners, principals, caretakers and traditional surgeons. 

“They also inspected the facilities and resources to ensure they meet minimum standards as per Section 30 of the CIA.” 

These operations, the department said, have ensured the safety and health of numerous young initiates.

“The PICC has opened cases at various police stations and the school principals were arrested.” 

PICC Chairperson Kgosi Godfrey Ramosetlho Gasebone has expressed concern over the non-compliance of the initiation school principals which resulted in the increase of illegal schools and the deaths of two initiates. 

Kgosi Gasebone believes the proliferation of illegal initiations is driven by money and greed by individuals who want to extort money from the parents of initiates.

“During our capacity building session which occurred in April 2024, the PICC…[did] its best to engage the school principals across the province about the new customary initiation law and to follow it before establishing the initiations school. This was done to prevent the emergence of illegal initiation schools.

“We are happy that the school principals have been arrested and they will face the full might of the law. We will continue to work with the police to clamp down on these illegal acts until everyone follows the dictates of the CIA,” Kgosi Gasebone added.  

He has also condemned the recent attack on the PICC Deputy Chairperson Andries Stemmer’s son by those running illegal initiation schools. 

“This incident occurred following a community tip-off about illegal initiation schools in Lichtenburg and Coligny, where 13 initiates were found.” 

Other initiatives were rescued from schools in Moretele, Motla, Makapanstad, Kromkuil, Klipgat, Kgabalatsane, Hebron, Letlhabile, Tigane, Goedgevonden, Mahikeng, Mareetsane, Coligny, Boikhutso, Makouspan and Madibogo which were shut down. 

“The rescued initiates were taken to neighbouring clinics and hospitals for further check-ups and assistance.” 

Gasebone maintains that no initiation school will exist without following the prescripts of the CIA, which amongst others included medical check-ups of initiates and acquiring consent from parents of initiates. 

“What is happening is totally unacceptable. It is illegal and shows no regard for life. We appeal to communities to help the department and PICC stops these criminals who abduct schoolboys and initiate them without the knowledge and consent of their parents. The two deaths would have been avoidable,” said Gasebone.

Inquest into deaths of four SANDF members

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has initiated an inquest into the deaths of four members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) who may have been poisoned by carbon monoxide.

The members were stationed on a 24-hour shift at Shaft 3, a dormant mining shaft in Orkney, North West, next to the abandoned Harry Oppenheimer stadium which has been a hotspot for illegal mining, according to the SANDF.

The deceased members are said to have been found inside a container structure which was used as a guard house for those on 24-hour duty on Saturday morning, 6 July 2024, when the next shift was taking over. 

The police were called and upon inspection of the scene, all four had died, with their rifles on them and their items still intact. 

“The district surgeon was called to the scene and examined the bodies and confirmed no injuries. A team from the Pretoria FSL Chemistry Unit, also attended the scene and preliminary findings are that the deaths of the members could have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, from a possible fire made by the members during the cold night inside the container structure,” the statement read. 

The bodies of the deceased were transported to the Klerksdorp State Mortuary for further investigation and post-mortem.

“The names of the deceased will be announced once the families have been informed and all processes and formalities have been completed followed by the announcement of the funeral arrangements.”

The Minister of Defence and MilitaryVeterans Angie Motshekga and Deputy Minister Bantu Holomisa, have extended their condolences to the families of the deceased and the entire defence family. – SAnews.gov.za

Women Ministry denounces acts of violence against the elderly

The Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has welcomed the arrest of a 19-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his grandmother.

The teenager was arrested by the police in the Western Cape after being seen assaulting his grandmother in a video that went viral on social media.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident occurred last month at the grandmother’s home, and at that time, officers were summoned to the scene. However, the family refused police assistance.

“The suspect was traced to Wallecedene in Kraaifontein on Wednesday evening. He is expected to appear before the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on a charge of assault,” said police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe.

Chikunga said since the arrest of the perpetrator, the department has reached out to the Western Cape Department of Social Development to address the matter.

“Since then, the Department of Social Development has assigned social workers to the family for psychosocial support,” Chikunga said in a statement on Thursday.

Chikunga restated that an abuse of an older person occurs when any person, in a relationship where there is an expectation of trust, does something or fails to do something that causes harm or distress, or is “likely to cause harm or distress to an older person.” 

The department’s Deputy Minister, Mmapaseka Steve Letsike, is expected to visit the grandmother to offer words of comfort at Karl Bremere Hospital on Friday, 5 July, at 3:30pm.

In line with the Older Persons Act, of 2006, South Africa joined global citizens in commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day; to protect, promote and maintain the status, rights, well-being and security of older persons. – SAnews.gov.za

A 19-year-old has been taken into custody for attacking his grandmother - the incident of which was recorded and went viral on social media.  

In the 55 second video, the teenager from the Western Cape is seen slapping the grandmother on the face and hitting her head in the kitchen.

The elderly woman then falls to her knees before gathering the strength to stand up as her grandson continues to threaten her. 

“The grandson of the victim was arrested at his residence in Wallacedene last night and he is scheduled to make his court appearance in Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged,” a South African Police Service (SAPS) statement read.

According to the police, the suspect was found in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, Cape Town, where he lives with his relatives. 

The grandmother is said to be in hospital for an ailment unrelated to the assault and declined to submit a statement, the SAPS said. 

The police’s initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred last month at the residence of the victim. 

“The police were summoned to the scene, but it is said that the family took the matter into their own hands and refused police assistance. 

“The severity of the matter was realised when a video of the incident was circulating on the internet, and on this basis, SAPS intervened and opened a case docket on behalf of the victim.” 

The police said crimes against women and children are on top of the SAPS’ priority list and that they will not turn a blind eye to any form of violence in this regard. – SAnews.gov.za

NHLS apologises for blood result delays

The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) has announced that while all its laboratories are operational following a cyber-attack, the issuing of test results to clinicians remains an issue. 

“Under normal circumstances, the laboratory reports are automatically generated and sent to clinicians or made available on WebView, this incident has disabled that functionality. However, all urgent results are communicated telephonically to requesting clinicians,” the NHLS said in a statement on Wednesday

The NHLS announced late last month that it was hit by a cyber-attack, which compromised its systems and infrastructure.

In the meantime, the State-owned diagnostic pathology service provider said it was still implementing alternative plans and steps to maintain business continuity.

The NHLS has since distributed a critical test list to all health facilities. 

“This is done to limit the volume of test requests, allowing laboratories to cope with the workload. However, this does not imply that routine tests will not be performed.” 

In addition, the service provider had to come up with ways of making tuberculosis (TB) and HIV viral load historical test results available to clinicians. 

“More tests, prioritising those on the critical test list, will be made available. In addition, we are in the process of developing an electronic registration system for registering new samples and providing test results electronically. Access to laboratory results will be the same as the historical TB and HIV viral test results.” 

According to the NHLS, its current focus is to bring all its systems back online by the estimated mid-July to ensure end-user access remains.

“The NHLS is handling this challenge with extreme urgency to ensure the timely and secure recovery of all affected operations.” 

Meanwhile, the organisation has since opened a case with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and informed all the relevant regulatory bodies about the breach.

“The NHLS views this attack in a serious light with significant worry and is treating the situation with great urgency. The breach has endangered the safety and well-being of millions of public health patients.” 

The Board and its leadership team have apologised for the inconvenience caused by this occurrence and assured the public that the organisation is taking all necessary steps to resolve the situation. 

“Despite the incident, the NHLS remains fully committed to providing high-quality diagnostic services to the public. The NHLS appreciates all stakeholders’ patience and the support we continue to receive during this difficult time.” – SAnews.gov.za

Portuguese businessman kidnapped for ransom rescued in Soweto

A 49-year-old Portuguese businessman who was kidnapped for ransom last month, is the latest victim to be rescued by the police. 

In the last six months, 12 businessmen and six students who had been kidnapped for ransom have been rescued by a multidisciplinary team led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) anti-kidnapping task team.

According to the SAPS, the Portuguese businessman was kidnapped from his business premises in Florida, Johannesburg, on 24 June 2024.

“On Monday evening, 1 July 2024, the team traced the victim to a home in Snake Park, Soweto, where he had been in captivity. 

“On the same evening, members also arrested one of his captors in Turffontein, Johannesburg,” a statement from the Office of the National Commissioner of the SAPS read. 

According to Eyewitness News (EWN), Portuguese South African butchery owners are being targeted in a spate of kidnappings in Gauteng. 

The news organisation said that 20 Portuguese South African butchery owners and managers were kidnapped in the province since January last year, with one victim murdered.  

EWN said ransom demands for the safe release of the victims range between R400 000 and R3.5 million, while in at least nine of these cases, ransom demands started from R10 million.

“The SAPS anti-kidnapping task team including other law enforcement agencies and private security have been working around the clock to find the businessman, safe and unharmed,” the police said. 

The police believe that the 39-year-old suspect belongs to a syndicate that is responsible for at least four other kidnappings where businessmen were the target in the Johannesburg District. 

“The team is currently tracing suspects who were working together with the man.

“In cases where the businessmen and students had been rescued, no ransom payment was made as a direct result of the expertise and capabilities of SAPS detectives, the crime intelligence unit and collaboration with private security.” 

As per the police statement from January 2024 to date, 49 kidnappers who had demanded ransom payment from families of victims have been arrested in Gauteng, the North West and Free State. 

In addition, 21 vehicles used in the commission of these crimes have been confiscated and eight firearms have also been seized. 

“The SAPS is confident that working together with all stakeholders and community tip-offs, it will continue to take down more syndicates believed to be behind a spate of kidnappings for ransom across the country,” the SAPS added. – SAnews.gov.za

The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato has commended the interception of four Lesotho nationals who were in the country illegally and in possession of over R1.4 million in cash at the Qashasnek port of entry.

The arrests were made during a joint operation by the BMA, members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the South African Police (SAPS) after a vehicle was stopped for searching as part of routine check at a Vehicle Check Point (VCP) of a Bi-National operation between South Africa and Lesotho on 25 June 2024.

“Five Lesotho nationals were in the vehicle and four were found to be previously declared undesirable and had been banned from entering the country in terms of the Immigration Act. The above-mentioned persons were searched and found to be in possession of concealed South African currency worth R1 480 050.

“The four who did not have the requisite documents were arrested for being in South Africa illegally and a case was opened. The money which was counted, and underwent counterfeit verifications, was then deposited into the state bank account pending further investigations on the matter,” the BMA said on Saturday.

The Commissioner commended the crime prevention contributions of BMA officials at Qashasnek port of entry and their detection systems.

"As the Commissioner of the Border Management Authority, I am committed to ensuring the safety and security of our nation. To this end, we have adopted a zero-tolerance approach to criminal activities at our ports of entry.

“We will rigorously enforce the law and take decisive action against any illegal activities to maintain the integrity of our borders. The Junior Border Guards continue to display great effort in protecting our country. Their dedication and hard work are vital in maintaining the safety and integrity of our nation," Masiapato said.

Fire claims patient’s life at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital

The Gauteng Department of Health has confirmed that a fire incident at the psychiatric unit of the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital has resulted in the death of a 35-year-old female patient.

According to a statement, the patient was admitted on 20 June 2024. She was placed in a seclusion room on Monday as part of her prescribed treatment when at around 18:35, smoke and a small fire broke out.

“Immediate actions were taken to safeguard the safety and well-being of patients. The fire was quickly contained and extinguished by the fire brigade, but unfortunately, the patient in the seclusion room sustained fatal injuries.

“Seventeen other patients in the unit were successfully evacuated and temporarily relocated to a different wing of the psychiatric department as a precautionary measure,” the statement read. 

According to the department, the cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage and the incident has been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.

“The department wishes to extend our deepest condolences to the patient’s family as they mourn the sudden passing of their daughter.” 

The provincial department said both the bereaved family and the families of the 17 patients will be taken through a debriefing.

Agency welcomes efforts to fight cross-border crimes

The Cross-Border Road Transport Agency (C-BRTA) has welcomed the recent 53-year conviction of cross-border vehicle hijacker and smuggler, Sipho Mhlanga.

Mhlanga was sentenced to 53 years by the Mtubatuba Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 19 June.

The CEO of the C-BRTA, Lwazi Mboyi, said the agency notes the progress registered by law enforcement authorities in the country in the fight against cross-border crimes.

“This is a step in the right direction because cross-border crimes and related syndicates frustrate South Africa’s efforts to improve and build a healthy trade between the country and neighbouring countries. It is for this reason that we commend the work that has been done thus far, and we would like to wish the South African Police well in their efforts to eliminate cross-border crimes,” Mboyi said in a statement on Sunday.

Mhlanga’s arrest and subsequent conviction followed “sterling work” by the South African Police Service (SAPS), who were deployed to the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal to clamp down on cross-border criminality.

“The C-BRTA, as the facilitator of the commercial transportation of passengers, goods and services across borders, welcomes and commends the SAPS for the work they have done in fighting and combating cross-border crimes in KwaZulu-Natal and in the country in general,”  the agency said.

The C-BRTA is a statutory body operating in a commercial environment, with government represented by the Minister of Transport being the shareholder.

The agency facilitates the unimpeded flow of freight and passenger cross-border movements and plays a critical role in the implementation of cross-border road transport agreements and issuing of cross-border operator permits. - SAnews.gov.za

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in Mpumalanga and other key government stakeholders will provide services to the Elandshoek community, located on the outskirts of the N4 in Mbombela, today.

According to SASSA, the Integrated Registration Outreach Programme (ICROP) aims to bring services closer to people and ensure that communities have full access to SASSA social grant services.

The Departments of Home Affairs, Health and Social Development and the local municipality will be joining SASSA in their outreach programme. 

“The agency identified this area because it is an informal settlement and transport is costly for clients. This community travels 77 kilometres to reach the SASSA Nelspruit service office. 

“The majority of the Elandshoek community depend on social grants and many are foreigners from Mozambique and Eswatini, some are naturalised citizens and make a living through seasonal employment at the agricultural farms,” the agency explained. 

SASSA will be educating the public to empower them about social grant information. 

“Access and equal opportunity are essential human rights, enshrined in the Bill of Rights of the Constitution.” 

The agency will render several services including grant application, Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) COVID-19 grant enquiries and change of payment method.

Alleged illegal mining kingpin to appear in court

An alleged illicit mining kingpin is expected to appear in the Apel Magistrate’s Court in due course after being arrested with two others in Atok, Limpopo, said the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“In a coordinated operation on Wednesday, 19 June 2024, a swift response by a multidisciplinary team, including units from the South African Police Service, the South African National Defence Force, and the National Intervention Unit under Operation Vala Umgodi, resulted in the apprehension of a notorious illicit mining kingpin in the Atok area along the R37 road, within the Apel policing precinct,” said the police.

In a statement on Friday, the police said the team intercepted illegal mining activities, leading to the arrest of three individuals aged between 31 and 45 at the scene.

“Among the apprehended suspects was a Congolese foreign national believed to be the mastermind behind illegal mining operations in and around the Atok region,” said the SAPS in a statement on Friday.

A white and blue Scania horse and trailer truck loaded with chrome, TLB (Tractor-Loader-Backhoe), a maroon Toyota Yaris, and a white Ford Ranger were seized during the operation. -SAnews.gov.za

NATJOINTS satisfied with security measures for inauguration

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) says it is satisfied that all security measures that have been put in place ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration ceremony are sufficient and adequate.

NATJOINTS has played a pivotal role in the run-up to this momentous occasion for the country.

this from ensuring that the 2024 National and Provincial Elections took place in a safe and secure environment, where citizens from all walks of life were able to cast their vote, to securing the first sitting of the National Assembly and the nine Provincial Legislatures.

“This is a clear demonstration of our country’s law enforcements capabilities and competence.  The smooth running of these events without any disruptions and with minimal incidents reported throughout the country during this period, bears testament that the security forces of this country are fully equipped, are equal to task and stand ready to prevent, combat and enforce the law,” NATJOINTS said in a statement.

“Our integrated NATJOINTS plan is designed to focus on venue security, route, transport, traffic control, sea, land, airport, border, accommodation security as well as crowd management capabilities.

“This plan involving various government departments led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), South African National Defence Force and the State Security Agency is currently being implemented in all corners of the Gauteng province where the Presidential Inauguration is taking place.

“We have heightened police visibility, where all operational units are on the ground to ensure that we assert the authority of the State,” NATJOINTS said.

NATJOINTS said it is leaving nothing to chance and has already begun to deal with criminality, with the arrest of a foreign national at the accreditation centre on Monday.

At the time, the Zimbabwean national attempted to obtain accreditation.

“Our integrated systems immediately detected that this individual was using an identity document of a deceased person. The suspect has been charged with fraud and contravention of the Immigration Act. He is in police custody.

“We have our high, medium and low risk units all deployed to execute their respective mandate within the confines of the law,” NATJOINTS said.

Traffic officials from Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg Metro Police Departments have been deployed at all key points to direct traffic and execute road safety measures.

They are working closely with members of National Traffic officials who have been communicating on the road closures and alternative routes.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has also deployed its crime prevention officers and Public Order Policing units to police the large crowds that are expected to attend these celebrations.

“We are patrolling, conducting stop and searches and roadblocks to ensure we tighten security and deal with any criminality,” NATJOINTS said.

Members of the public wishing to attend the Presidential Inauguration will be able to park their vehicles at the Tshwane Showgrounds and ride a free bus to the Union Buildings.

There will be no private vehicle access to the union buildings. The park and ride shuttles will commence at 3am to 06:30am this morning.

The public walking in will have access to the Union Buildings South Lawns through a security checkpoint.

All attendees are encouraged to conduct themselves responsibly and in an orderly manner.

The following items are prohibited:

* Dangerous weapons such as firearms and sharp weapons.

* No traditional weapons, including traditional spears and knobkerries will be allowed.

* No alcoholic beverages.

* No cooler boxes.

* No fireworks.

* No glass bottles.

* No drones.

Members of the public are reminded that before entering the South Lawns, they will be searched and anyone found with these items will be turned away.

Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult and parents who wish to bring their young children along must ensure strict supervision.

The Department of Social Development has set up a tent to reunite children who have separated from their guardians during the event.

The SAPS has also established a Venue Operations Centre (the VOC), where all safety and security responses will be coordinated from.

Emergency medical services also form part of the VOC and are on standby to attend to any medical emergencies.

The area around the Union Buildings has been declared a restricted no-fly zone for 20 nautical miles until Wednesday evening at 16:00pm.

“Our air support and air space security task teams, which includes the SAPS Airwing, the South African Air Force and the South African National Defence Force are monitoring the airspace to ensure that no unauthorised drones and aircrafts enter the restricted air space.

“As the NATJOINTS, we stand ready to stamp the authority of the State and to deal with any lawlessness. No disruptions and unbecoming behaviour will be tolerated.

“We continue to urge members of the public to refrain from sharing unverified information in any form of pictures, audios, or videos that incite violence and create disunity.  Our intelligence communities continue to monitor various platforms for inflammatory messages and statements,” it said.

NATJOINTS warned that those who are found to be engaging themselves with online mobilisation for unrest and violence will be charged under the Cybercrime Act 19 of 2020. – SAnews.gov.za

KZN government calls for helping hand for flood victims

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government has appealed to the public to extend a helping hand to flood victims by donating essential items such as building materials, as restoration work is underway in the northern parts of eThekwini Metropolitan.

The provincial government is currently on the ground providing relief and humanitarian services to hundreds of people of uThongathi, who lost most of their belongings during the storm that hit the area.

“The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government is currently coordinating humanitarian aid relief in uThongathi following the disastrous freak storms, which caused loss of life, damage to property, and left many members of the community without food, clothing and shelter.

“You are urged to help those in need by donating what you can, particularly building materials,” the provincial government said.

Donations can be delivered at the KZN Provincial Disaster Management Centre at 66 Shortts Retreat Road, Pietermaritzburg, 3212. The donations can also be delivered at the uThongathi Sports Centre in Gandhi’s Hill, uThongathi, 4399.

Power supply restored

The eThekwini Municipality reported that power supply has been restored to most areas where electricity infrastructure was severely damaged when the storm hit.

“Affected areas include Burbreeze, Sandfields, Greylands, eMagwaveni, Maidstone and La Mercy. Electricity teams have restored power supply to most of areas in Fairbreeze, Sandfields, Jan Roz and Burbreeze.

“Temporary arrangements are still in place for a continuous supply of electricity. Repair teams are working round the clock to ensure power restoration to Magwaveni area,” the municipality said.

Search for two missing people continues in Kariega

Meanwhile, the search for two missing people following the recent floods in Kariega in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is still underway.

The municipality’s Disaster Management Official, Thomas Cameron, said the metro’s Fire and Emergency Services and lifeguards had joined the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Coastal Water Rescue in the intensified search efforts.

"Currently, we have the SAPS [South African Police Service], who are still busy with the search operations. They are assisted now by other organisations, including our NMBM teams. Their team has now increased to make the search more efficient,” Cameron said.

While a total of 575 residents have been moved from halls and churches and accommodated at lodges and student accommodation facilities, Cameron said more residents were expected to be relocated to newly identified facilities from Sunday.

Cameron said joint operation centres are still running and meetings are being held daily.

“A few people in Gqeberha were displaced and moved to the accommodation centres. There are also two accommodation centres in Gqeberha and six accommodation centres in Kariega,” Cameron said. 

Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Zolile Williams, said it will cost the provincial government an estimated R6 billion to repair damaged infrastructure.

Williams said government will find permanent accommodation for displaced communities by 31 July 2023. – SAnews.gov.za

Operation Shanela nets 1 287 suspects

Operation Shanela has resulted in the arrest of over 1 200 people in the North West.

Police operations, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies and role players aimed at preventing and combatting crime, resulted in the arrest of 1 278 suspects for various offences over the 3 - 9 June period.

“The suspects were, among others, arrested for crimes such as rape, murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), house and business robberies, malicious damage to property, burglary at residential and business premises, possession of drugs, theft out of/from motor vehicle and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” said the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Of the 1 278 suspects, 379 were apprehended during raids and 52 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing by immigration officials.

The arrests were effected during stop and searches, road blocks, patrols, vehicle check points, visiting and inspecting of licensed liquor premises and second-hand goods dealers and tracing of wanted suspects, among others. 

During the operations, a variety of drugs, 17 cell phones, six firearms, 18 rounds of ammunition and other items were confiscated.

As part of enforcement of the Liquor Act, 1989, a total of 24 illegal liquor outlets / shebeens were shut down.

North West Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, thanked all role players for their continued efforts to ensure safer communities.

Since inception in May 2023, Operation Shanela consists of regular stop and searches, roadblocks, vehicle check points, high visibility patrols including foot patrols, the tracing of wanted suspects with a focus of murder and rape suspects, compliance inspections at liquor outlets and second hand good dealers. – SAnews.gov.za

Trial date set for Richard Mdluli corruption case

The corruption case against former South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence Head, Richard Mdluli, has been set down for trial in October.

Mdluli will be in the dock in the Pretoria High Court with co-accused, former SAPS Head of Supply Chain Management, Heine Barnard and former SAPS Crime Intelligence Chief Financial Officer, Solomon Lazarus.

According to National Prosecuting Authority Investigating Directorate spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, the court ordered that the “trial will commence on the set date regardless of the pending outcome on an application by Mdluli compelling the SAPS to pay for his legal fees”.

“Mdluli, together with…Barnard and…Lazarus, are facing charges of corruption, fraud and theft relating to the police’s secret slush fund from the time they were employed by the SAPS in the Crime Intelligence Services, between 2008 and 2012,” he said.

The three face a raft of charges, including:

  • Payment of private trips to China and Singapore.
  • Private use of a witness protection house in Boksburg and conversion of this property for his personal use.
  • The leasing out of Mdluli’s private townhouse at Gordon Villas in Gordon’s Bay as a safe house to the State and using the monthly rental to pay his bond.
  • Payment of Mdluli’s financing costs owing on his private BMW through an intricate scheme to the detriment of the SAPS.
  • Coercing a SAPS supplier into giving Mdluli a special deal on the use and purchase price of a Honda Ballade.
  • Paying transfer costs to an attorney on the purchase of a house in Cape Town.
  • Having family members, without adequate qualifications or experience, appointed in crime intelligence as well as getting them on the payroll and paying their salaries, providing them with motor vehicles and cell phones.

The trial is expected to commence on 7 October this year. – SAnews.gov.za

The South African Police Service (SAPS) says it remains relentless in its pursuit to dismantle the trade in counterfeit and illicit goods nationwide.

On Friday, the National Counterfeit Goods Unit led an operation in the Johannesburg CBD which resulted in the arrest of two Chinese nationals and the seizure of counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R5.8 million.

Police also arrested two Ethiopian nationals for contravening the Immigration Act No. 13 of 2002 during the operation.

Almost 7 000 counterfeit items imitating well-known brands were seized, which included sports apparel, clothing, shoes, perfumes, sunglasses, watches and bags.

The team comprised SAPS members from various specialised units, officials from the South African Revenue Service (SARS), Gauteng Traffic's Saturation Unit, Brand Protectors, Crime Prevention Wardens and private security.

In the past eight months, the National Counterfeit Unit, in collaboration with its various crime fighting partners, seized over R400 million worth of counterfeit and illicit goods during various takedown operations in different parts of the country. New vehicle fleet for the SAPS

Police Minister General Bheki Cele has handed over 130 cars to the Local Criminal Records Centre (LCRC) of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The vehicles are set to enhance and improve, among other functions, the response time to crime scenes by crime scene experts.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held at the Pretoria Police Academy, Cele said progress is being made in capacitating the police.

“We are working very hard to capacitate the organisation,” Cele said on Friday, adding that student police officers are part of the plan to the capacitate the force.

“We had to go Parliament, to the Portfolio Committee to be given permission to purchase this equipment that is supposed to be used by the intelligence world. Our job is to prevent, combat and investigate.”

Cele said the vehicles will play a role in assisting the police in their investigations, linking suspects to crime scenes through evidence collection and analysis.

Some of the vehicles will be distributed to the provinces.

Last month the Minister officiated at a ceremony where 78 vehicles were handed over to the Illicit Mining task teams also known as Operation Vala Umgodi.

Since inception in December 2023, Operation Vala Umgodi has resulted in the arrest of more than 6000 suspects including the seizure of uncut diamonds worth R32 million.

Public Order Policing Units received 52 minibuses. These units are key role players in responding to large gatherings and protests. – SAnews.gov.za
