Those who act with impunity will be brought to book
“Impunity is no longer a given”.
These are the fighting words of National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), Advocate Shamila Batohi.
She, alongside the National Prosecuting Authority’s executive committee, was addressing a media roundtable on Wednesday.

“The one big difference between what was the position five years ago and what’s the position now… is that impunity is no longer a given and the Steinhoff matter shows that. Even though it might take long. Even though the arm of the law might be long, it catches up.
“Those that are involved in corrupt activities know – even though there might not be a knock on the door yet – it will come and that in itself is mental incarceration,” she said.
The NDPP said the NPA has been hard at work to bring cases to court against high profile individuals, including former Ministers, Premiers, a former President and “some of the most powerful CEOs and CFOs across the country both in the private sector as well as public”.
“In the last five years, we have almost 700 government officials that have been convicted of corruption in the Specialised Commercial Crime Unit [SCCU] space. In 2023 and 2024, the SCCU achieved 329 convictions in serious and complex commercial crime cases, resulting in a conviction rate of 88.7%.
“The SCCU has enrolled four cases relating to 16 recommendations in the Zondo Commission reports… and several other matters will be ready for enrolment in the coming months.
“The ID [Investigating Directorate] has declared 103 investigations. They’ve enrolled 37 cases involving 208 accused persons as of January 2024."

Batohi said South Africans need to understand that getting to the judgment stage is a lengthy process led by the judiciary.
“Even when we do bring cases to court, then you have Stalingrad tactics that start. Very often we hear: 'But you don’t have people in orange overalls'.
“But it needs to be understood that once we enrol a case, it needs to move swiftly through the system so that we get to the end where you can say that a decision has been rendered by the judiciary.
“That process in court is led by the judiciary. We’ve been engaging with the Chief Justice [Raymond Zondo] and various Judge Presidents to see how we could actually fast track cases through the court system,” Batohi said.
The NDPP vowed that despite challenges, the NPA will continue to prosecute without fear or favour.
“I have every confidence that… if we could achieve what we have done with very little, that the days are certainly numbered in terms of those who will be before the courts,” Batohi said. – SAnews.gov.za

In support of President Biden's Digital Transformation with Africa Initiative and building on the U.S. Department of Commerce-wide Africa strategy, NBA Africa today announced the launch of “Triple-Double: NBA Africa Startup Accelerator,” a startup accelerator based on the continent focused on early-stage African startup companies.
Triple-Double: NBA Africa Startup Accelerator will support Africa's tech ecosystem and the next generation of African tech entrepreneurs by providing them with access to mentorship and capital that will help drive growth in the sports and creative industries.
Operated by ALX Ventures, a leading technology incubator that provides the continent's tech leaders with access to the skills and tools to launch and scale their startups, Triple-Double: NBA Africa Startup Accelerator is open to early-stage startups in Africa that develop solutions in event management and ticketing, youth development, AI, and digital marketing in the sports and creative industries. Startups can apply to participate at TripleDoubleAccelerator.NBA.com through Friday, May 31, after which the submissions will be narrowed down to the top 10.
The 10 selected startups will then be paired with mentors comprised of NBA Africa and ALX leadership, and other corporate stakeholders, who will provide guidance to the companies with a focus on product development, business growth and go-to-market strategy. In September, NBA Africa will hold a Demo Day in New York City that will coincide with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Participating companies will pitch their products to a panel comprised of top industry leaders from the U.S., Africa, and around the world. The panel will then determine the four winning companies, which will be awarded financial support, mentorship, and the opportunity to work with NBA Africa and the Basketball Africa League (BAL) on their current and future initiatives on the continent.
The announcement was made today by NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi, who was joined by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo and U.S. Trade and Development Agency Director Enoh T. Ebong at the American Chamber of Commerce's Business Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.
“We are thrilled to launch an accelerator program based on the continent and focused on early-stage African startups,” said Akamanzi. “This groundbreaking new initiative reflects our commitment to expanding the African sports ecosystem, and these incredible companies will be at the forefront of shaping the future of sport on the continent.”

Major improvements in Road Accident Fund turnaround strategy
Cabinet says it has noted the Road Accident Fund (RAF) turnaround strategy which has resulted in major improvements in the settlements of claims within 120 days and reduced legal costs by 75 percent.
The strategy has also seen a reduction of medical costs from R3.6 billion in the 2019/20 financial year to R2.1 billion in the 2023/24 financial year.
Cabinet, in a statement on Monday, said it had received a briefing on the implementation of the turnaround strategy for the RAF, aimed at simplifying the funds system, while also improving the administration of benefits and payouts to accident victims.
Cabinet noted that a key intervention has been the launch of the RAF contact centre which provides a platform for RAF claimants to have access to their claims information without having to solely rely on their legal representatives.
The platform also allows claimants the opportunity to verify the payments made by RAF to their legal representatives.
“The interventions also led to cumulative legal costs savings of over R23 billion in the three years of implementing the strategy. Moreover, the strategy interventions resulted in the reduction of claims paid to claimants/ short term liability to R9.3 billion for the period ending 31 March 2023,” Cabinet said in a statement.
Cabinet was also updated on legislative amendments to the current RAF Act, which are at an advanced stage.
“The RAF Amendment Bill will be considered by the 7th administration of government. The bill is aimed at refining the benefits and the payment of certain products in annuities and making it equitable,” Cabinet said. – SAnews.gov.za

Programme to assist KZN small-scale farmers to become sustainable commercial businesses
KwaZulu-Natal small-scale farmers have been afforded an opportunity to grow into sustainable commercial businesses through a holistic, integrated programme, which will provide mechanisation, infrastructure and sector expertise.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube led the provincial launch of the Integrated Agricultural Development Programme, where a total of 1 128 tractors, worth R17 million, and other implements were allocated for the small-scale farmers.
During the launch in Richmond on Thursday, Dube-Ncube, together with Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) MEC, Super Zuma, also handed over ownership certificates to community projects.
Dube-Ncube said through this initiative, the provincial government aims to strengthen the ability of farming groups to maintain, take responsibility and care for their assets.
She said additional mentorship and mechanisation training will be provided to community projects that are experiencing challenges in their farming activities to ensure self-sufficiency.
“Sustainable mechanisation is critical in the development of value chains and food systems, and through this programme, we are ensuring that even our small-scale farmers are given an opportunity to be competitive.
“They will be able to sufficiently cultivate land, be more efficient, effective and environmentally friendly in their operations,” Dube-Ncube said.
The Premier also emphasised that food security is a priority for the province, and the provincial government remains committed to opening the market for provincial farmers, through government’s Radical Agrarian Socio-Economic Transformation (IRASET) Programme.
She said the provincial government wants the farmers to be game changers of the market, as per the commitment made during the State of the Province Address to assist farmers to meet demands of the province.
“We want them to supply major markets locally and eventually service cross borders markets and we are ready to assist them to meet any criteria. Today we have officially handed over a cheque and equipment to SyaJay Agricultural Services, a project we are most proud of.
“SyaJay Agricultural Services (Pty) Ltd, is a 100% Black-owned business and the two beneficiaries are graduates of the Owen Sithole College of Agriculture. The project was approved for a total funding of R5.6 million from the Agricultural Development Agency (ADA) and 10 hydroponic tunnels, a cooling and irrigation systems have been completed. A mobile pack house will be ready at the end of May,” Dube-Ncube said.
Sya Ngcobo, one of the beneficiaries, said over and above becoming a sustainable business that is making profit, their vision is to create an information hub.
Ngcobo said they partly want to function as a demonstration site, where small-holder farmers would sharpen their skills and gain crucial sectorial knowledge.
“In many instances, you find that some farmers struggle once they have penetrated the market. Even though they may have good quality produce, vegetables do not sell because of incorrect packaging.
“We want to teach our farmers and give them an opportunity to come and see how it is done from the work we will be doing,” Ngcobo said.
Dube-Ncube said the items will at a later stage be distributed to all the districts when champion MECs roll out the programme. – SAnews.gov.za

Orange (www.Orange.com) is launching the third season of its flagship program Y'Africa, which will be broadcast weekly from mid-April on 15 national TV channels across Africa; This new season is dedicated to the journeys of 28 rising sporting talents from 12 countries; Like the first two seasons, it is directed by Dan Assayag and produced by Fame Productions; Season 3 has 7 episodes, each 52 minutes long.
The Y'Africa project was launched by Orange in February 2020. The first two seasons were very successful, not only on the 15 African terrestrial TV channels on which it was broadcast, but also on social media, where content from the series has racked up 80 million views. The first two seasons highlighted the richness and diversity of African culture by profiling 63 artists. The third season presents 28 high-level Olympic and Paralympic athletes and champions, each of them represents the continent's hopes.
Inspired by the extraordinary pool of talent seen across the continent, Y'Africa celebrates the vitality and plurality of modern Africa and its people. The name of the program also reflects this connection, “Y'Africa” is the contraction of “Africa Ya lelo”, or “Africa today” in Lingala.
Breathtaking images, extraordinary stories
Season 3 of Y'Africa involved 18 months of filming in all corners of the world: South Africa, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Spain, the US, Ethiopia, France, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, and Tunisia. Among our 28 athletes are 13 Olympic champions, world champions, or world record holders, including:
Y'Africa Season 3 covers 21 Olympic disciplines, from traditional favorites (such as athletics, swimming, boxing, gymnastics, fencing, and judo) to the most exciting new ones (including BMX, skateboarding, and surfing). As well as the acclaimed athletes profiled in the series, we also feature rising athletes, training for top-level international competitions through sheer rigor and commitment, despite having not yet won a title. W Cape receives record number of Grade 1 and 8 applications for 2025
The Western Cape provincial government has announced that it has received 102 680 applications for Grade 1 and 8 for 2025.
This is an increase of 5 936 on last year’s on-time window, during which applications for 96 744 Grade 1 and 8 learners were received.
The admissions window closed on Friday, 12 April 2024, at midnight.
“We thank the parents who put in the effort to apply on time, helping us to plan for a place for their child in a school next year,” the Western Cape Education Department said on Wednesday.
After the deadline, all late applications will be considered only after those received on time.
Parents will still be able to capture late applications on the online system until 12 May 2024, but they will be flagged as late applications.
The provincial department said parents of students in Grades 1 and 8 who are planning to relocate to the Western Cape, but have missed the online application deadline of 12 May 2024, or have not applied for any other reason, should get in touch with their district office immediately for assistance.
“We urge parents not to wait until the last minute to apply,” the department added.
The window for Grade R applications and transfer requests for Grades 2 to 7 and Grades 9 to 11 will run from 1 to 16 August 2024.
Meanwhile, now that on-time applications have closed, schools will have a little over a month to consider all the applications they have received.
Parents are reminded that they do not need to drop off their certified hard copies at this stage. They will only need to do so once they have received an offer from a school and accepted the offer as their final choice of school.
“Parents will start seeing the outcomes of their applications online from 30 May 2024, and we will remind them of this as the date approaches. The date has been shifted by a day from 29 May 2024 to accommodate the public holiday for the general election.”
Parents must then accept or decline successful offers before 14 June 2024, and the department encouraged them to do so as quickly as possible.
“It is important for parents to confirm their choice of school speedily when they have received offers from multiple schools. These parents are essentially ‘double parking’ on the system, stopping schools from offering these places to other applicants until they make their choice.”
If a parent has not confirmed their choice by 14 June 2024, the system will automatically confirm their top-ranked school that has made an offer.
All other offers will then be removed, so that those places can be offered to other learners.
“Parents who do not receive an offer on 30 May 2024 should not be disheartened as places always open up as parents confirm their final choices. We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to place every learner whose parents applied on time as quickly as possible.” – SAnews.gov.za
