A New Era of Gender Balance and Income Diversity in SA Loyalty Programmes

Location: MyPR

The latest research shows that for the first time, both male and female South African consumers are equally engaged in loyalty programmes, with 76% participation from each gender. This heralds a shift from the historical trend where loyalty programmes were predominantly favoured by women. It also shows how consumer behaviour is evolving and reflects a …

North West provincial government advertises over 160 jobs

The North West Provincial Government has advertised the first batch of over 160 vacant positions across provincial departments.

According to the statement, this is part of strengthening the provincial government’s capacity to deliver services and open the public service to capable professionals, graduates, youth and women.

North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi said the recruitment drive which started over the weekend aims to create work opportunities for qualifying youth unemployed graduates and fight the scourge of unemployment in the province.

“We are embarking on a developmental trajectory that is aimed at capacitating the State and will see to the full implementation of the plans we have set out for ourselves in the seventh administration. But of critical importance is to take a lead as government in job creation,” Mokgosi explained.

Through the implementation of the province’s growth and developmental strategy, the province will be guided by the newly instituted Investment and Economic Advisory Council (IEAC).

The plan is to create over 100 000 jobs in tourism, agriculture and construction in the next five years.

“The creation of jobs must be a multifaceted approach which must include the private sector. We initiated engagements with various stakeholders on how best we can respond to the astronomical figures of unemployment in the province, and I believe that all our efforts will yield the desired results,” Mokgosi added.

The vacancies have been advertised in national and provincial newspapers and at www.nwpg.gov.za and www.dpsa.gov.za. – SAnews.gov.za

Online vehicle renewals shows “phenomenal” growth

Location: News

Online vehicle renewals shows "phenomenal" growth

Vehicle owners are increasingly abandoning the long queues at vehicle licensing centres and opting to renew their vehicle licences online to save time.

An analysis of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) online platform, online.natis, shows that more than 2.5 million vehicle owners have opted for the convenience of the online platform since its launch in 2022.

“Monthly average online renewals on the natis platform have increased from 44 802 in August 2022 to 222 606 last month with an average daily renewal of 7 181.

“To access the service which offers motorists the convenience of renewing the vehicle licence from the comfort of their homes or offices, vehicle owners must register their profile on online.natis.gov.za. This will enable them to update their contact details namely cellphone numbers and email address.

“Registered vehicle owners are entitled to receive renewal notices and can pay AARTO enforcement orders online while renewing their vehicle licences. More than five million vehicle licence renewal notices have been sent out since the beginning of the year,” RTMC said on Monday.

The service is now also available through participating banks such as First National Bank, Capitec and Nedbank.

The RTMC is also able to assist fleet owners who wish to renew vehicle licences in bulk to save time and money.

“Scores of fleet owners have taken the convenience offered by the bulk renewals service and are reaping the benefits. The RTMC strives to deliver vehicle licences with three to five days and has been able to achieve this target 97% of the time,” RTMC said. - SAnews.gov.za

Saluting the power of sport

Location: News

Saluting the power of sport

Sport has a cunning, yet magical way of bringing people together, no matter one’s race, creed or colour.

Recent impressions on the official South African Government X account which is managed by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), has shown that a social media post on swimmer Tatjana Smith clinching gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke at the 2024 Olympics garnered 68,144 impressions.

The post also garnered 65,794 engagements on Facebook.

Likewise, when Team South Africa secured silver in the men’s 4x100m relay at the same Paris Olympics, the subsequent post garnered 50,104 impressions on X and 12,211 post engagements on Facebook.

And that is quite impressive for social media pages owned by government, as some people may shun government messaging for different reasons.

While citizens may have negative feelings towards government, people do engage with what our government has to say. The figures generated above are indicative of this.

Despite the challenges that hammer society, including inequality and unemployment, sport mends and stitches together the fabric of society despite the trials.

In his congratulatory message to our sporting stars, when he was Acting President, Deputy President Paul Mashatile said that sport has a “unique ability to bring South Africans together and uplift the nation's spirit, even amidst our challenges.”

Mashatile’s comments came as our athletes made the nation proud, including sprinter Mpumelelo Mhlongo who secured South Africa’s first medal at the now concluded 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, winning gold in his 100m event.

Bayanda Walaza made history in Peru, becoming the fastest young man on earth with remarkable times of 10.19 seconds in the 100m sprint and 20.52 seconds in the 200m sprint.

What Mashatile said goes hand in hand with President Nelson Mandela’s address to the first Laureus World Sports Awards back in 2000, wherein he said that sport has the “power to inspire” and the “power to unite people in a way that little else does.”

The awards honour and celebrate the world’s greatest sportspersons and what the Laureus organisation terms “the inspirational power of sport and its ability to change lives.”

Prior to democracy, one’s skin colour dictated every aspect of life and what one could and could not do, even aspects of playing sport. Much has changed since those dark apartheid years, and all of South Africa’s people can now participate in the sport of their choice.

Now that the Paralympic and Olympic Games have ended, I carry a sense of sadness of no longer being able to watch (for the next four years, that is,) the human spirit’s strength in overcoming adversity to overcome and win, in addition to many hours athletes put in to hone their craft.

While I will have to wait for years for the next summer Olympics in Los Angeles in the United States, what is pleasing to the eye is that South Africa claimed six medals in five sporting codes, including a gold earned by swimmer Tatjana Smith, three silvers earned by the Smith, the men's 4 x 100m relay team, and Jo-Ane van Dyk, who participated in the javelin throw.

The Paralympic team also made the nation proud with a tally of six medals, of which two are gold and were earned by discus thrower Simone Kruger and Mhlongo. The country also earned four bronze medals at the games, in which 168 countries participated.

To top that off, monetary incentives for medallists in the Paralympics are the same as those who participated in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

This goes to show that differently abled athletes are being seen and heard just as other athletes.
South Africa’s National Sport and Recreation Plan (NSRP) makes reference to the government placing a special emphasis on “the inclusion, empowerment and promotion of the government’s priority groups”, that also includes people with disabilities.

The courage showed by para-athletes is evidence that anyone can achieve their dreams.  This goes some way in encouraging those living with a disability not to hide who they are, but to explore their abilities, which could one day put them on the world stage.

The Paralympics have come a long way since the ninth International Stoke Mandeville Games—considered to have been the first Paralympic Games—took place in 1960 with just 23 nations participating at the time.
As a society we need to learn more not only about the sporting codes our para-athletes play but also about how we can be considerate of the needs of people living with disabilities while also being supportive.

However, the conclusion of the games does not mean the end of the magic of the mesmerising power of sports. The sounds of blaring whistles and red and yellow cards bandied about on the pitch continue, and it requires our collective support.

The past weekend saw our sportsmen and women claim glory on the pitch with the Springboks triumphant in their second clash against the All Blacks in the 2024 Castle Lager Rugby Championship.
On the same day, the Springbok Women won their match against the Barbarians Women’s side.

Not wanting to be left out, Bafana Bafana equalised in their clash against Uganda; the men’s national football side drew 2-2 with their counterparts in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at Orlando Stadium.

While the national men’s side has had struggles, they continue to flight, and Friday’s draw shows their efforts to claim glory.

Previously, Bafana coach Hugo Broos had raised concern about the little fan support the team was garnering at matches. We can play our part by supporting the national team as they aim to qualify for the AFCON in Morocco in 2025.

The qualifiers will determine the 24 teams that will contest the 35th edition of the AFCON tournament.
As fans, we have magical powers that can egg on our teams to reach victory, which not only leaves us with an exhilarating feeling, but also helps to build national pride.

Just as South Africa is a melting pot of diverse cultures, we ought to support all our athletes and sporting codes. After all, variety is the spice of life, and every egg and piece of steak needs some spice. -SAnews.gov.za

Land Bank reaches agreement with lenders

Land Bank reaches agreement with lenders

The Board of the Land Bank has announced the successful conclusion of a debt restructuring solution with all its lenders.

At a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday, the bank said official notices have been issued, signalling the implementation of the solution and the bank’s strategic direction moving forward.

The agreement reached with the Land Bank international and local lenders will remedy the bank’s prevailing debt default which occurred in April 2020, said Land Bank Board Chairperson, Thabi Nkosi.

Nkosi said following the signing of legal agreements and the fulfilment of all conditions, the debt restructuring solution will take effect on 16 September 2024, effectively ending the Land Bank’s debt default position.

She said the debt restructuring spans multiple financial instruments of all the bank’s lenders, ensuring equitable treatment of all the lenders, regardless of the type of debt held and their governing laws.

“Scheduled repayments to lenders will occur every six months through to March 2028. The government's equity contribution will play a critical role in this plan, positioning Land Bank on a sustainable path forward,” Nkosi explained.

Nkosi acknowledged this has been one of the most intricate and extended debt restructuring efforts in South Africa’s financial history.

Coordinating a large number of lenders, including local lenders, a multilateral development finance institution and international banks, as well as the different types of debt instruments, and tenures, added to the challenge.

“Thankfully, all parties showed remarkable patience and good faith with lenders respecting a stand still arrangement since the bank defaulted on its debts. We believe the solution we have reached is in the best interest of all stakeholders and the agricultural sector," Nkosi said.

Speaking on behalf of government, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said government has been concerned about the effect the protracted negotiation process has been having on the bank’s lending activities, which are vital for the socio-economic impact of the bank on the South African economy, and the agricultural sector, in particular.

The Minister said at its prime, the Land Bank contributed R45 billion to the bank’s agricultural debt finance, which represented a share of approximately 28% of the South African farming debt.

Since the debt default the bank has repaid over 60% of its debt. This was achieved through cash proceeds from a deliberate reduction of the bank’s loan book, which reduced from R45.2 billion in March 2020 to R17 billion by June 2024.

Despite the downsizing, Land Bank resumed limited lending activities in October 2022 through the Blended Finance Scheme, which is supported by grant funding from the Department of Agriculture.

“Whilst we were mindful of the bank’s need for state support to assist it to get out of its debt default, we were also cognisant of the fact that a large part of the bank’s debt restructure solution would be driven through the bank’s own initiated remedial measures,” Godongwana said.

Through its own cash flow from collections and client settlements, Godongwana said the bank was able to repay 60% of its funding liabilities since the debt default.

"Government provided R10 billion to stabilise the situation and alleviate the State’s contingent liabilities through the settlement of the State-guaranteed lenders, and to allocate R3.7 billion from these funds towards the Blended Finance Scheme to support the bank’s agricultural development and transformation mandate.

“We also ensured that the bank found self-help measures while keeping fiscal support to a minimum. Moving forward, the bank's funding model remains a priority," Godongwana said.

He added that with the liability solution finalised, government wanted the bank to adhere to the pledges set out in its debt restructure agreement and begin a process to address its funding structure so that “we never find ourselves in a similar position again”.

“A closer relationship and collaboration between the bank and the Department of Agriculture, as well all relevant state departments and entities, is required to ensure that coordinated efforts and economies of scale of the State’s entities and the private sector are leveraged to deliver effective impact in the agricultural sector,” Godongwana said.

With the liability solution finalised, the Land Bank is now focused on executing its turnaround strategy to implement its mandate and to drive development and transformation within the agricultural sector.

The bank said the new operating model, led by the CEO and the executive team, with strong board support, “will be central to this journey”. – SAnews.gov.za

465 000 people living with HIV in the North West

Location: News

465 000 people living with HIV in the North West

The North West had the fifth highest HIV prevalence rate in the country at 12.3% in 2022, with HIV prevalence in the province at 20.8% among those aged 25 to 49 years old overall.

In addition, a large number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the province were women.

This is according to the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), which released the key findings of the Sixth South African HIV Prevalence, Incidence, and Behaviour Survey (SABSSM VI) for the North West on Monday.

According to the overall principal investigator of the study, the HSRC’s Professor Khangelani Zuma, the survey showed that in 2022, HIV prevalence in the province was 20.8% among those aged 25 to 49 overall and more than two-fold higher (29.0%) among females than among males (13.4%).

Among adolescents and youth, HIV prevalence was 2.5-fold higher among females (8.3%) than among males (3.3%) of the same age.

The survey revealed that the HIV prevalence peaked at 31.4% among those 40 to 44 years in 2022 compared to 36.8% among those 45 to 49 years in 2017.

However, there was a decrease in HIV prevalence in 2022 among those aged 30 to 39 and 40 to 49.

“Of great concern is the worsening situation among adolescents and youth, with HIV prevalence being worse or similar to that of 2017.

“The prevalence of HIV among adolescents 15 to 19 is higher (4.5%) in 2022 than in 2017 (3.2%), indicating continued infections among adolescents and youth,” Zuma noted.

The data presented are for three priority districts in North West namely, Bojanala, Dr Kenneth Kaunda and Ngaka Modiri Molema, where oversampling was undertaken to enhance the precision of the HIV prevalence estimates.

By district, in 2022, HIV prevalence among all ages was highest in Bojanala (15.4%), followed by Ngaka Modiri Molema (12.1%) and Dr Kenneth Kaunda (11.9%).

Antiretroviral treatment

Antiretroviral treatment (ART) coverage in North West increased from 60.7% in 2017 to 78.9% in 2022.

This means an estimated 324 000 people living with HIV in the province received treatment in 2022.

ART use among those 15 to 49 years was 76.1% overall, 81.8% among females, and 63.0% among males.

ART use was 73.8% in urban areas and at or above 85% in rural informal and formal or farm areas.

By district, ART use ranged from 81.5% in Bojanala to 84.9% in Dr Kenneth Kaunda.

Meanwhile, Zuma expressed concern that people living with HIV aged 25 to 49 accounted for most people living with HIV in the North West who were unaware of their HIV status (68.4%), aware but not on ART (70.1%), and on ART but not virally suppressed (71.3%).

However, adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 contributed disproportionately to gaps in treatment, accounting for just 6.4% of all people living with HIV, but 15.8% of those unaware of their status, 15.6% of those aware but not on ART and 12.9% of those on ART but no viral load suppression (VLS).

Key HIV drivers

Shifting the focus to key drivers of the HIV pandemic, Zuma noted that in the North West, the proportion of adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 who reported having sex before 15 years declined from 12% in 2017 to 8.8% in 2022.

In 2022, sexual debut before the age of 15 years among adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 was four-fold higher among males (14.0%) than females (3.5%).

The survey revealed that in the North West, 9.5% of people 15 years and older reported having two or more sexual partners in 2022 compared to 11.1% in 2017.

The proportion of people aged 15 and older who reported having two or more sexual partners was higher among males (33.7%), compared to females (30.6%), and those 15 to 24 years (50.1%) compared to other age groups.

The proportion who reported having two or more sexual partners was highest in rural informal or tribal areas (34.8%) and in Bojanala district (12.7%).

Regarding condom use, the survey revealed that in North West, 32.2% of respondents reported using a condom with their most recent sexual partner in 2022, a 12.5% decline from the 44.7% reported in 2017.

Condom use with their most recent sexual partner among people aged 15 and older was similar among both females (30.6%) and males (33.7%), and higher among youth aged 15 to 24 (50.1%) than adults aged 15 to 49 (30.6%).

The professor recommended a long-term strategy to care for individuals in an ageing HIV epidemic as well as tailored interventions to address gaps in the clinical cascade by district, locality and subpopulation.

“We also recommend a continued focus on increasing coverage and demand for medical male circumcision among males aged 15 and older. We must also enhance public awareness and uptake of effective HIV prevention measures, such as regular HIV testing, condoms and PrEP,” he added. – SAnews.gov.za

Minister commits to improve working conditions of veterinarians

Minister commits to improve working conditions of veterinarians

Agriculture Minister, John Steenhuisen, has committed to ensuring that the working conditions of animal health practitioners are improved in South Africa.

This comes as the country grapples with a critical shortage of professionals in the essential field, which has far-reaching implications for animal health, biosecurity and food security.

Steenhuisen said veterinarians face challenges, including insufficient resources and medicines, inadequate remuneration, and mounting mental health concerns.

He emphasised the gravity of the issues and acknowledged the indispensable role played by veterinarians in safeguarding the country's agricultural sector.

"Veterinarians are a cornerstone of South Africa's agricultural success, and without addressing the systemic issues they face, we risk jeopardising not only their well-being but the nation’s food security," said Steenhuisen.

The Minister also underscored that South Africa must become a place where animal health practitioners can thrive and feel valued.

“South Africa currently has 4000 registered veterinarians, far below the international benchmark which is between 200 and 400 veterinarians per million people. At least a hundred veterinarians emigrate annually in search of better opportunities abroad,” the Minister said.

In his efforts to ensure comprehensive input from all relevant parties, Steenhuisen is expected to meet with nine provincial agriculture MECs, including senior officials from the department, the South African Veterinary Association, and key industry experts to address the concerns and avert a potential crisis in the profession and the agricultural sector. – SAnews.gov.za

SA records one more mpox case

The Department of Health has called for continued public vigilance as the country records one more laboratory-confirmed case.

According to the department, the patient is a 38-year-old man who sought medical intervention at a private medical practice in Cape Town on Wednesday last week.

This is after he experienced typical mpox lesions on the face, trunk, thorax and genitals. He also had a headache, light sensitivity, sore throat and muscle pain.

“The patient was not admitted but urged to home-isolate while waiting for test results. The results came back positive on Friday, 6 September,” the statement read.

According to the investigation report, the patient has no recent international travel history nor had contact with a suspected or confirmed mpox case.

The outbreak response team in the province has since been activated, while the contact tracing and monitoring activities are ongoing.

This increases the total number of positive cases recorded in the country since the outbreak in May this year to 25 cases, including three deaths.

Twelve of these were reported in Gauteng, 11 reported in KwaZulu-Natal and now two in the Western Cape.

“The patient is home isolating and in a stable condition. We urge all the identified and suspected contacts to cooperate with health officials during contact tracing for screening and possible diagnosis to prevent further transmission of this preventable and treatable disease.

“The healthcare workers understand the importance of confidentiality in managing reported and suspected cases of notifiable medical conditions.”

Meanwhile, according to the department, the risk of wider transmission remains low in the country, but anyone can contract mpox regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation and race.

Some of the common symptoms of mpox include a rash which may last for two to four weeks, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen glands.

“The painful rash looks like blisters or sores, and can affect the face, palms of the hands, soles of the feet, groin, and so on,” the department explained. – SAnews.gov.za

Africa’s Trade Transformation: The Power of Technology for Sustainability (By Arnaud Bouraima)

Location: News
Webb Fontaine

By Arnaud Bouraima, Deputy Chief Commercial Officer, Webb Fontaine (https://WebbFontaine.com/).

In the face of mounting global environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, and increasing focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) awareness, sustainable trade practices and supply chains have the potential to radically transform Africa's economic future.

From green logistics to fair trade and circular economy principles, sustainable trade practices have a significant positive impact on global and local trade. In addition to environmental benefits, they enhance market competitiveness and open access to new markets that value a commitment to sustainability.

However, the transition to eco-friendly and sustainable supply chains is reliant on several factors, not least a significant investment in the infrastructure and technology needed to streamline port and customs operations and ensure a smooth entry of goods into the country in question. An understanding of the importance of digital transformation by governments and regulatory bodies is also a key factor in adopting digital solutions over more traditional manual systems.

African countries that understand and embrace these requirements are well on their way to laying the groundwork for sustainable trade practices.

As an example, the port of Cotonou in the West African country of Benin handles an average of 80 to 90 merchant vessels monthly. According to the African Development Bank (https://apo-opa.co/3MF9Kxi), Cotonou deals with 90 percent of the country's international trade, serving up to 100 million consumers. In 2022, the port handled 12.5 million tonnes of goods, a figure that is predicted to almost double by 2038, reaching 23 million tonnes.

In a gesture of confidence, the recent extension of an €80 million loan (https://apo-opa.co/3MF9Kxi) by the African Development Bank for significant infrastructure upgrades will expand the port's operations even further. Yet despite the vast and complicated operations of one of Africa's busiest ports, Benin has jumped to 66th place on the World Bank's Logistics Performance Index (https://LPI.WorldBank.org/), an astonishing leap of approximately 100 places in just under a decade, positioning the country as West Africa's key trade hub.

But this wasn't always the case. High shipping costs, low efficiency, and poor logistical facilities threatened to stifle any hopes the port had of becoming a key trade route, despite the fact that the country is a crucial transit route for West Africa, connecting millions of people in the landlocked countries of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, and the northern regions of Nigeria.

Technology is revolutionising trade practices

The solution? Leveraging technology to break through the complexities, inefficiencies, and obstacles impeding effective trade, and transform Benin into an economically competitive trade hub.

This is a story that replicates itself in trade ports along Africa's entire coastline. Operators and customs entities are constantly looking for ways in which to alleviate the backlogs and delays caused by the high volumes flowing through these trade entry points, and digitisation, along with improved physical infrastructure, is proving to be an extremely effective solution. Partnerships and collaborations with specialist service providers hold the key to success.

The Webb Fontaine and Benin story

Backtracking from the current situation, and highlighting the importance of long-term public-private collaborations in modernising and streamlining trade landscapes, Webb Fontaine started working with Benin's Ministry of Finance and Benin Control in 2017. Implementing a suite of innovative solutions including Webb Single Window, Webb Transit Tracking, Webb Valuation, Webb Ports, and Webb Customs, we are proud to be playing a pivotal role in transforming trade in the country.

Webb Single Window has been a game changer. It forms the basis of GUCE Benin, a digital platform with over 6,500 users in the logistics chain that facilitates import, export, and transit operations, and incorporates electronic payment via Paylican, Webb Fontaine's official payments partner. Webb Single Window has also automated the processing of key administrative operations like issuing licenses and authorisations, overseeing currency exchange operations, managing exemptions, and communicating with tax services.

In practical terms, this means streamlining the process needed to get containers out of the port. Digitising processes to create efficiencies, using new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), reduces the time spent on clearance of goods, for both customs brokers and administrators. Benin now ranks as West Africa's top port and holds the third-highest rating in Africa behind Egypt and South Africa. Release times have been reduced by 30%, with a remarkable 50% of containers being released within only two days.

Along with operational efficiency at the ports themselves, economic growth is a key benefit. From digital skills development to higher revenues as a result of streamlined operations, technology is playing a crucial role. For example, reducing the clearance time from 47 days to only a few days allows for more cycles of importation, increasing tax revenue and creating a healthy economic cycle. This also attracts foreign direct investment, making the port more attractive for investors and traders.

However, the use of technology in port operations is just one aspect in a larger framework of sustainable trade. The resultant benefits, such as automated systems and data analytics have the potential to lead to more efficient operations, reduced emissions, and less waste, which are all key components of sustainable trade practices. For instance, quicker turnaround times not only reduce the carbon footprint of shipping and logistics operations, but they also reduce the need for extended storage, in turn decreasing energy consumption and waste.

Is Africa ready for sustainable and eco-friendly supply chains?

Despite the challenges faced by African countries, many are making great strides. Togo's new container platform, Nigeria's planned green port, Liberia's green economy reforms – all are notable examples. Yet much still needs to be done to fully embrace the digital transformation journey, while at the same time addressing issues like infrastructure development.

All stakeholders have a role to play in implementing sustainable and eco-friendly trade practices and policies. African governments, for instance, can make a commitment to investing the funds and resources needed to create infrastructure that will support both trade and digital advancements, as well as support sustainability initiatives. The African Continental Free Trade Area can play a crucial role in developing a standardised approach to these issues, based on learnings from other countries on the continent.

Africa is a continent that has immense potential when it comes to creating and maintaining sustainable trade practices that will drive economic growth. The continent's success stories demonstrate this, and serve as a call to governments, industry stakeholders, policymakers and the private sector to work together to find tangible solutions that will promote further growth and development. Webb Fontaine is already playing a crucial role in supporting Africa's governments on their trade facilitation journeys, with specialised port technology that is securing customs revenue, mitigating trade fraud, and streamlining clearance times. In the same way, when all stakeholders collaborate and contribute to improvements in their respective areas, Africa's economies will reap the collective rewards.

KZN government reaffirms commitment to restoring economic stability

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, has reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to restoring economic stability, creating jobs, and enforcing the rule of law in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Premier made the commitment during an Operation Siyahlola at the Mandeni Local Municipality on Friday.

Ntuli spearheaded the Operation Siyahlola at the local municipality, focusing on the inspection and revitalisation of factories in KwaSithebe that were damaged during the July 2021 civil unrest.

The operation included an inspection of Superling Clothing (Pty) Ltd, where undocumented foreign nationals were arrested on the spot.

Operation Siyahlola aims to assess the damage sustained by local factories while addressing the presence of illegal and undocumented foreign workers within the region’s industries.

The initiative aligns with the provincial government’s priority to restore order, enhance security, and ensure that businesses can operate in a safe and regulated environment.

Ntuli’s efforts underscore the province's commitment to both economic recovery and the enforcement of the rule of law.

The inspection also emphasised the government's dedication to ensuring compliance with legal and labour standards, protecting the local economy from illegal activities, and guaranteeing that workers receive wages that meet legal requirements.

Ntuli, accompanied by Ilembe District Mayor, Thobani Shandu; Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor, Thabani Mdlalose; and Ilembe District Police Commissioner, Major General Anthony Gopaul; amongst others, inspected the affected factories, reviewing both the extent of the damage and the level of compliance with legal regulations.

The Premier’s tour included a second clothing factory at KwaSithebe, where he also ensured compliance with local laws and regulations.

Addressing the media after the inspection, Ntuli said the operation had uncovered that several businesses in the area were operating without permits and were non-compliant with the law.

“Consequently, the South African Police Service made several arrests, and some factories were shut down immediately. This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to safeguarding the interests of local businesses and ensuring that the province remains a secure and prosperous environment for all residents,” Ntuli said.

The Premier touched on the issue of undocumented immigrants, urging them to return to their home countries and obtain the proper documentation before coming back.

“Do not allow yourselves to be exploited by employers who hire you to evade paying fair wages," Ntuli said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA to participate in WorldSkills International Competition

The WorldSkills Team South Africa has jetted off to France, where they will represent the country at the 47th WorldSkills International Competition taking place this week in Lyon.

The competition provides an opportunity to exchange skills, experience and technological innovations.
In South Africa, the WorldSkills initiative is championed by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

The competition serves as an effective platform to raise awareness about apprenticeships and artisanal skills, enhancing the standard of vocational education and training, and promoting artisanal skills.

The initiative aligns with the department’s Decade of the Artisan' programme, addressing the critical shortage of skilled artisans in the country.

The World Skills Competition aims to encourage young people, including high school learners, and tertiary students to consider artisanship as a career choice, thereby alleviating the skills shortage in the country.

The DHET said the South African competitors, under the banner of World Skills SA come from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges or Technical High Schools, or students undertaking studies towards a Diploma at a University of Technology, and private training colleges.

The department said the 47th WorldSkills International Competition will feature over 1 500 competitors from 65 countries across the world, competing in 61 skills from 10-15 September.

The skills will be divided into six sectors, including construction and building technology, social and personal services, creative arts and fashion, information and communication technology, manufacturing and engineering technology and transportation and logistics.

The department highlighted that competitions offer participants, not only those from South Africa, huge benefits and opportunities.

“It is about more than just winning and taking the prize home. WorldSkills competitions in general, including the WorldSkills International Competition, create opportunities for learners to become the very best version of themselves possible.

“They offer life changing pathway and opportunities that involve additional study and work experience. The WorldSkills South Africa (WSZA) programme plays a critical role in building bridges between all stakeholders within the apprenticeship and artisan development arena,” the department said.

WSZA’s aim is to further develop the skills of the many young people who participate in WorldSkills South Africa events and to build their networking and communication skills. This is through taking direction from industry peers and benchmarking their skills against those they compete with in the industry. – SAnews.gov.za

The theme of this year’s forum, which coincides with the WTO’s 30th anniversary, will be “Re-globalisation: Better Trade for a Better World”.

In line with the theme, this year’s forum will explore how re-globalisation can help make trade more inclusive and ensure that its benefits reach more people.

The WTO Public Forum is the WTO’s largest outreach event which provides a unique platform to interact with stakeholders from around the world, engage with the latest developments in global trade and propose ways of enhancing the multilateral trading system.

The annual events attract diverse stakeholders, including government policy makers, international organisations, business community, academia, parliamentary representatives, and civil society.

Honouring heroes of SA’s liberation struggle

Honouring heroes of SA’s liberation struggle

Government has planted indigenous trees at the site earmarked for the Forest of Freedom in honour of the heroes and heroines who contributed to South Africa's liberation struggle.

“By planting these trees at the Forest of Freedom, we are also honouring the 30 years of democracy and freedom,” Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Bernice Swarts said on Sunday in Pretoria.

Addressing the launch of the Arbor Month Campaign at Freedom Park, the Deputy Minister said the infrastructure, together with the cultural and historical essence that Freedom Park symbolises, made it the most suitable venue to host the launch of the campaign.

“Freedom Park is the custodian of South Africa’s cultural and historic information. It has a wide variety of South African woodland tree species and because of its location and infrastructure it has become a home of many cultural events.

“In recent times major construction work took place to fit in a high-pressure water pipe from a reservoir situated in the Freedom Park precinct to supply the City of Tshwane with water. In the preparatory work of laying the pipe, a significant amount of land clearing and deforestation was done. In order to reclaim the disturbed area, the Forest of Freedom was conceptualised,” Swarts said.

The project involves planting and putting back some of the vegetation, including trees, that were removed in the process of clearing.

Certain key woodland species were identified to be placed in the area. The first 30 trees that were planted are dedicated to the 30 years of South Africa’s Freedom.

“The rest of other trees and shrubs will be planted to complete the Forest of Freedom. In future, key individuals will be invited to plant trees in the forest as a symbol of remembrance of their visit to Freedom Park,” she said.

Trees were also planted at other community parks within the City of Tshwane, including at Kalafong Park in Atteridgeville, Springbok Park in Hatfield, and Fountains Valley Resort in the Groenkloof Nature Reserve, south of Pretoria.

“There are reasons why we chose to plant trees at these specific parks. For instance, we chose Kalafong Park because the Kalafong community is benefiting from the park through the provision of open recreational space as well as a fitness park. Before the intervention to establish a park, the area was used as a quarry to mine soil. It was a big hole that was excavated by the housing and construction developers to mine soil and sand.

“Springbok Park is currently managed through an Adopt -A- Spot programme initiative. The initiative was established to encourage community, business organisations and other independent entities to partner with City of Tshwane in ensuring parks, open spaces and other public recreational spaces are well taken care of and beautified where possible. Thus far, the partners of the Springbok Park are doing very well,” the Deputy Minister said.

In their first year, they managed to erect a new fence and kept the park clean.

“It is important to retain the indigenous flora approach on this park to preserve its National Monument status for the coming generations because educational activities for both future generations and community.

“The Fountains Valley was chosen to showcase the restoration work that the City of Tshwane is doing at the park. Due to old age, the Celtis trees growing at the Fountains valley are dying. In the quest to preserve the Celtis trees, the City of Tshwane started on a restoration drive.

“Young Celtis trees are integrated within the existing Groenkloof Reserve and at the Fountains Valley. This is a continuous process that will take place until the diminishing Forest Celtis trees are saved,” the Deputy Minister said.

By the end of the National Arbor Month Campaign, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment would have planted 3 500 trees at various parks within the City of Tshwane.

The tree planting activities also seek to highlight the Ten Million Trees Programme, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“Arbor Month has found a permanent place in our events calendar as a way of celebrating and increasing awareness on the importance of trees, whilst recognising their contribution in managing deforestation and biodiversity,” the Deputy Minister said. - SAnews.gov.za

‘New era of opportunity’ for China, South Africa cooperation

Location: News

'New era of opportunity' for China, South Africa cooperation

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the relations between South Africa and China have entered a new “era of opportunity”.

The President was addressing the nation through his weekly newsletter following an official State Visit to the People’s Republic of China last week.

“During the state visit, China and South Africa agreed to upgrade our relationship to an All-Round Strategic Cooperative Partnership in a New Era. This signifies the strengthening of the political, economic and social ties between the two countries.

“The strengthening of ties with major trading partners like China continues to yield benefits for the South African economy and people. It is clear that relations between South Africa and China have entered a new era of opportunity.

“Our visit has strengthened trade and investment ties and cemented our shared commitment to grow our economy, create jobs and advance prosperity for the people of our two countries,” he said.

Trading partners

The President revealed that during the visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed that he would like to see more finished goods from South Africa entering Chinese ports.

The Asian country is South Africa’s largest trading partner but, President Ramaphosa pointed out, there is an “imbalance in the structure of our trade”.

“South Africa exports mainly minerals and agricultural products to China and imports largely manufactured products from China.

“During our discussion, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his support for the development of South Africa’s manufacturing capacity and to receive greater volumes of finished goods from South Africa.

“President Xi has committed China to open its markets to more South African products and would seek to further broaden the frontiers for Chinese investment in the South African economy,” President Ramaphosa said.

The President added that government is buoyed by potentially increased cooperation between the two countries in “pursuit of low-carbon, climate resilient economic growth” and infrastructure.

“For example, South Africa has investment opportunities in the electric vehicle sector, renewable energy, green hydrogen and energy storage – and China has a proven track record in developing innovative solutions in these areas.

“There is also great potential, and much interest, for Chinese private commercial firms, state-owned enterprises and banks to invest in our country’s infrastructure build programme. This aligns with our plans to modernise our infrastructure by investing in the expansion of ports, rail and road networks,” he said.

Beyond our shores

President Ramaphosa emphasised that enhanced relations between China and South Africa can bring opportunities beyond the two countries.

While on the State Visit, the President attended the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) where the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and its potential were discussed.

“The [AfCFTA], which will provide access to a market of over 1.3 billion people, provides an even greater incentive for investment by China and other countries in Africa’s manufacturing capacity.

“This was underlined during the FOCAC summit attended by more than 50 African countries, where President Xi announced ten partnership actions that China would take together with African countries to support the modernisation of their economies. These actions cover areas like trade, industrial development, agriculture, health and infrastructure.

“At a time when African economies are growing closer together, China’s technological capabilities can support Africa’s industrialisation and enable the continent to export more than just raw commodities,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za
