Over 55% of election results captured
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) had captured close to 55% of the ballots as of 9am on Friday.
According to the IEC results dashboard, the African National Congress (ANC) is taking the lead nationally, with 3 236 550 votes representing 42.07%.
The ANC is followed by the Democratic Alliance with 1 821 912 at 23.68%, while the new kids on the block the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has already secured 832 178 at 10.82%.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which is currently the third biggest party in Parliament, is sitting at 9.58% with 737 238 votes.
Newcomer, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) is also making headway at position five with 211 738 at 2.75%.
These are currently the leading parties by voting station, as the IEC officials continue to capture the results in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections.
The counting procedures have been concluded with only a few voting stations reported to still be counting at 3pm on Thursday.
“The process of results compilation entails ensuring accuracy and validation of the results. This process involves scanning each result slip to create an image of the result, double-blind capture of each result slip, auditing of each result slip by independent auditors,” the IEC said.
According to the commission, the resulting system was audited externally and the parties also had to verify them.
The results have been trickling in throughout the night, as capturing continues.
The IEC said last night they were sitting on a 58.69% voter turnout, hovering just below 60% of voters, with bigger stations’ results still to come in.
As per the IEC data, 27 782 777 people registered to vote, with 7 943 840 total votes cast.
Of these, 7 840 658 were valid, with 103 182 spoilt votes.

IEC reiterates commitment to accurate results capturing
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has reiterated its commitment to achieving accuracy in the process of capturing the votes counted in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections.
On Thursday evening, the Commission held a briefing at the National Results Operation Centre (ROC) in Midrand, Gauteng, where it detailed the latest developments in the capturing and verification process following the General Election held on Wednesday, 29 May.
Earlier on Thursday, the IEC said in a briefing that with vote counting having been concluded, each voting station would embark on a process of finalising its results.
READ | Process to finalise Elections 2024 voting station results underway
At the time of the briefing at 8pm on Thursday, IEC General Manager Granville Abrahams said the overall percentage of votes captured on the results system stood at 55.6%.
Abrahams explained that the reason the new developments were not appearing immediately on the leaderboard at the ROC is that the Commission was still verifying them to ensure accuracy.
“To achieve accuracy, we have various processes, the first one being the capturing of the results. The results slips have been received after being checked, [as well as being] scanned and audited,” Abrahams said.
Given that this was the first time there were three ballots in the National and Provincial Elections (i.e. National Ballot, Regional or Province-to-National Ballots and Provincial Ballots), Abrahams said the Commission had anticipated that the counting process would take longer.
READ | Voters urged to familiarise themselves with three ballot papers
“We did expect that we will take longer this year and to that extent, we did share with the media that we have planned to have the results announcement on Sunday. Normally, we would have it on Saturday,” Abrahams said.
Abrahams said the results will continue to trickle in throughout the night.
“That is a positive sign from the smaller municipalities. Based on what we have on the system, we are sitting on a 58.69% voter turnout, so we are hovering just below 60% of voter turnout, with bigger stations' results still to come in,” he said.
The Commission reported an incident where one ballot box, containing votes that had already been counted, went missing in transit from the voting station Matamzana Dube School in VD 43412767, KZN282, uMhlathuze.
The IEC appealed to citizens in and around Ward 14 uMhlathuze, KwaZulu-Natal, to be on the lookout for the IEC branded ballot box.
“The Commission is required to retain ballot boxes for a period of six months before disposing of them. We are quite eager to get back that ballot box so that it can be placed in storage,” Abrahams said.
The ballot box got lost while it was being transported in an open vehicle and it was discovered when they got to the destination that it was missing.
“I wish to emphasise that those votes have been counted and they have been recorded on the results slip,” said Abrahams. – SAnews.gov.za

Process to finalise Elections 2024 voting station results underway
With vote counting having been concluded in the National and Provincial Elections 2024 (NPE2024), each voting station is now expected to embark on a process to finalise its results.
This according to Electoral Commission (IEC) Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sy Mamabolo, who was briefing the media at the IEC National Results Operations Centre in Midrand on Thursday afternoon.
He explained that the process is now expected to unfold as follows:
WATCH | IEC media briefing
“Once all the results are finalised, the Commission will undertake the seat calculation process, based on a prescribed formula. The full list of the new public representatives will be handed over to the Chief Justice once seat assignment is completed.
“While this process is proceeding well, it is important to reflect that historically, in the first 24 hours, 80% of the results would have been finalised. However, the process in the NPE2024 has been slowed down by the third ballot, particularly in the metropolitan areas,” he said.

The CEO emphasised that the commission has at least a week to announce the results.

Accountability through the ballot box is not enough
Vote counting now concluded
Vote counting in the National and Provincial Elections 2024 has now been completed, and the process to capture and validate results is underway.
This is according to the Electoral Commission’s Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo.
Mamabolo was briefing media at the IEC’s National Results Operations Centre in Midrand on Thursday afternoon.
“For all intents and purposes, counting procedures have been concluded, with only a few voting stations reported to still be counting at 3pm. The process of results compilation entails ensuring accuracy and validation of the results.
“This process involves scanning each result slip to create an image of the result, double blind capture of each result slip, and auditing of each result slip by independent auditors. The result system was audited externally and parties had occasion to also audit,” Mamabolo said.
WATCH | IEC briefing
Mamabolo said by 4pm on Thursday, results had been concluded for some 22.6% of the voting districts – representing at least 2.3 million votes cast.
The rate of the results captured is as follows:
“A result is considered complete only when a result slip has been scanned into an image, captured onto the results system, audited by independent auditors and has gone through the automated Results System exception parameters,” Mamabolo explained.
Every vote counts
Mamabolo revealed that the last ballot to be cast on Election Day was cast in Tshwane, Gauteng, with the first results coming from the Eastern Cape.
“True to its undertaking, the Commission assisted all voters that were in the queue by 21h00. Just after midnight, the Commission announced the first result. This was in a voting district in the Winnie Madikizela Mandela Municipality in the Eastern Cape,” he said.
The CEO thanked the millions of South Africans who braved long queues at voting stations and other challenges to make their mark in these elections.
“The Electoral Commission thanks the real heroes of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections. They are South Africans who stood in the queues and electoral staff who worked tirelessly to process the votes.
“The commitment and patience shown by the voters and electoral staff demonstrates their commitment to our electoral democracy,” Mamabolo said. – SAnews.gov.za

Government thanks voters
Government has thanked the millions of South Africans who successfully went out in their numbers to make their voices heard in the seventh democratic elections by casting their votes.
“Particularly noteworthy is how first-time voters clearly came out in their numbers to affirm their right to vote and in so doing their commitment to a democratic and free country, a country which knows its freedom came at a high price,” Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) Acting Director-General, Nomonde Mnukwa, said on Thursday.
South Africans went to the polls on Wednesday in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections.
These elections coincide with the country’s celebration of 30 years of freedom and democracy.
“The youth of South Africa have confirmed their commitment to shaping our nation’s future in this election and their engagement in the electoral process is a testament to their adherence to constitutional values. We salute you all,” Mnukwa said.
The GCIS said the unwavering commitment, dedication and professionalism of various stakeholders and role players was instrumental in ensuring that the country held successful elections.
“The conduct of the electorate during this process has been exemplary as a testament to the founding principles of the country’s democracy and is a reflection of a nation hallmarked and acknowledged globally by a regular, credible electoral process since 1994.
“This active participation of citizens is indeed a cornerstone of our democratic process and will go a long way in building a vibrant and representative nation,” the GCIS said.
Law enforcement agencies working through the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) were crucial in ensuring safe and peaceful elections.
“This ensured that all citizens exercise their democratic right to campaign and cast their vote freely and without fear. The security measures, most notably in identified hotspot areas, contributed to elections that were peaceful and safe. Where incidents were reported, these were swiftly addressed not only by law enforcement and officials of the Electoral Commission (IEC).”
The voting process by the IEC across all correctional facilities concluded without significant issues.
“This is an important milestone for a democratic country, ensuring that eligible voters, including the incarcerated, participate in the electoral process. The synergy amongst correctional officials in preparing inmates and ushering them to the voting stations made it possible for the IEC to guarantee a seamless and secure voting experience for inmates.
“The Department of Home Affairs also ensured that all South Africans had identification documents for the purpose of casting their votes with extended operating hours and issuing of temporary ID documents to enable the public to have the necessary documents that enabled them to vote.
“Since the dawn of democracy, South Africa’s general elections have been viewed as free and fair by both domestic and international observers, and this serves as encouragement for the country to continue to uphold the integrity of the electoral processes,” GCIS said.
Government acknowledged the invaluable contributions of community leaders, elections officials, volunteers, and all who played various roles in facilitating successful elections.
“Working together, the teams were instrumental in ensuring voter education and accessibility for all eligible voters. All sectors of society are commended for making it possible for the elections to be held in such a peaceful, nonviolent, and safe manner,” GCIS said.
The election was also marked by a record number of political parties as well as independent candidates for the first time, which is a reflection of South Africa’s maturing multiparty democracy.
The cooperation by all political parties is a demonstration of the collective spirit of ensuring that all citizens exercise their democratic right to vote.
“The role of the various communication channels and platforms, as well as national and international media in ensuring comprehensive coverage of our elections confirms the crucial role of media in strengthening democracy and civic education. Throughout this elections period, the media played a critical role in reflecting on our advances, challenges and our developmental journey since 1994,” GCIS said.
Government has thanked the various partners from state entities but also various agencies, civil society and the non-government sector, as well as the media, who played an assertive role during the elections period, to curb disinformation and misinformation thus contributing to the integrity of information circulated during the electoral process.
Vote counting and establishing a new administration
“As the counting process unfolds, the public is urged to refrain from sharing information in the form of pictures and videos that seek to declare elections results or incite violence pertaining to elections results. Elections results will be announced officially by the IEC as the body that is legally mandated to announce elections results,” Mnukwa said.
Government has reiterated that there will be no vacuum as South Africa journey’s to the establishment of the seventh democratic administration and whilst the country awaits the outcomes of the elections.

IEC thanks voters for their patience in long queues
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to thank everyone who waited in long queues at voting stations across the country on Wednesday.
As millions of South Africans took to the polls to make their mark in the National and Provincial Elections, many faced long, snaking queues, reminiscent of the first democratic elections in 1994.
Addressing the media yesterday afternoon, IEC Deputy CEO Masego Sheburi said the commission attended to most of the reported incidents of voting stations not opening due to challenges with voter management devices.
While the polls closed at 9pm all citizens who were in the line were allowed to vote, and onsite security services ensured that all voting and counting processes were concluded safely.
“To everyone who waited in line to vote, thank you for your patience,” the IEC wrote on X.
The commission also expressed its gratitude to officials who worked hard and long hours to make sure Election Day was a success.
“A special thank you to the thousands of IEC officials and stakeholders who made #SAelections24 happen, we see you. We could not have done it without you. It’s your democracy, own it,” the IEC wrote.
The first results in the elections started trickling in around 2am on Thursday.
Vote counting was at 13.99% as of 10:19am today.

SA needs you to stand up and vote
All systems are in place to ensure that South Africans will have an opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote on Wednesday, 29 May 2024.
The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) said several measures have been put in place so that citizens can safely and securely cast their vote in the year that the country celebrates 30 years of freedom.
“The right to vote was fought for during our country’s liberation struggle and came at an extremely high price as many of our countrymen and women sacrificed their lives for us to have this right,” the statement read.
GCIS said voting is about the future and putting in place a government, which builds a better life for its people, a life materially better than in the years before democracy.
As a nation, government believes that every citizen should rightfully be proud of the democracy, which gives a voice to everyone.
The government agency also thanked all South Africans who cast their vote for their special votes.
Those who were approved for special votes but did not have the opportunity to cast their ballot can still do so on the official Election Day.
The GCIS called on all South Africans, especially young and first-time voters, to exercise their democratic right to vote.
In the run-up to the elections, there has also been a massive civil education drive by the Department of Basic Education in partnership with the Electoral Commission (IEC).
This has resulted in almost all 539 000 young people aged 18 and 19 years old registered to vote.
In collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs, all eligible youth in school have been provided with their identity documents (IDs) to ensure they can participate in this national milestone.
Meanwhile, the same department extended its operational hours and will be opened until open until 9pm tonight to allow eligible voters to collect their smart ID cards or green ID books.
“We thank all South Africans who have already taken up the opportunity at various Home Affairs branches across the country to collect their IDs.”
Temporary identification certificates can also be obtained for R70 and will be issued immediately for use.
Voters can call the Home Affairs toll-free number 0800 60 11 90 for more information.
Government said it was grateful to all its stakeholders, including the media and civil society organisations, who have played a crucial role in actively advocating for a free and fair campaigning process.
The GCIS thanked traditional and Khoi-San leaders for the role they have played in ensuring voters exercise their democratic rights.
“Since 1994, these leaders have been instrumental in our society and we call on them to continue to encourage all eligible voters to participate in the elections tomorrow.”
GCIS said the seventh democratic election was a turning point in the history of the country’s democracy due to the expansion of electoral participation, which broadened the pool of leadership choices for national and provincial elections.
“We believe that this is a testament to the vibrant and inclusive democracy the country has built over the past three decades.”
In addition to polling stations being opened throughout the country, voting will also take place in prisons. A total of 14 753 inmates at correctional facilities have registered to vote in the elections, and they will get a chance to cast their ballot.
Government said it was ready to combat and prevent any threats to the election such as intimidation, public violence, clashes, or community protests, and we remain convinced that citizens will be free to make their mark for democracy.
Law enforcement agencies have made the necessary plans to safeguard the election process. This includes securing voting stations through static deployments, along with escorting voter material and IEC staff.
Government strongly condemned the illegal demonstrations that sought to undermine the democratic process.
GCIS described the actions as unacceptable and assured citizens that necessary measures are in place to prevent such occurrences.
“Citizens with legitimate grievances are encouraged to constructively raise these within available channels.”
Meanwhile, the agency calls on communities to be vigilant and to avoid being manipulated by those bent on committing criminal acts under the guise of a legitimate protest.
South Africans were also encouraged to demonstrate tolerance by respecting each other’s right to vote and uphold the democratic principles that our country stands for.
The GCIS urged the public to conduct themselves peacefully and allow the IEC to do its work freely without any intimidation.
“We call on all eligible voters to go out in their numbers and vote to strengthen our democracy and determine their future.”
GCIS described elections as a collective voice that has immense power to build the South Africa we all want.
“As South Africa proudly celebrates 30 years of freedom and democracy, let us celebrate our democracy by exercising our right to vote and ensuring a better future for all.”
Acting GCIS Director-General, Nomonde Mnukwa said: “Voting is one of the most visible means to be an active citizen and to make your voice heard, let us therefore come out in our numbers and renew our democracy”. – SAnews.gov.za

Citizens make their mark in 2024 Elections
Voting stations have now officially closed and Election Day 2024 in South Africa has drawn to a close.
Citizens who were still in line at 9pm will be served by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), and will still be allowed to make their mark.
In some areas – particularly metropolitan hubs – long, snaking queues of voters could be seen, with millions of South Africans making their way to voting stations to exercise their hard won right to vote.
In a media briefing on Wednesday evening, Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo, said the commission had put in place plans to service those areas with more speed.
“Part of the measures that we implemented…was to call on the counting officers, who were due to join later. But we called them earlier to assist with dealing with the queues,” Mamabolo said.
He explained the process that will now unfold as counting commences.
“Ballots are counted at the voting station where they are cast. Party agents and independent candidate agents and observers will monitor the entire counting process as well as the results compilation.
“Sealed ballot boxes will be opened and emptied in front of everybody at the voting station, and each ballot is then unfolded face down and checked for the Electoral Commission’s security stamp. All valid ballot papers are grouped according to their colours representing the different tiers of the election.
“The ballots will then be sorted into piles according to votes for each party or candidate. They will [then] be packed into bundles of 100 until a count is confirmed in respect of a party or candidates. Then results slips are completed by the Presiding Officer and party agents as well as agents representing independents will be expected to counter sign the results slips to confirm the correctness of the count attributed to their party or to their candidate,” he said.
From there, the slip will be taken to the Commission’s local office.
“At the local office of the IEC where the local party structures will be present, it will first be scanned into the results system to create an image of that result. It will then be available for political parties that are [at the Results Operations Centre].
“After that, it will be captured… and after capturing then it will be audited. Once the captured result is audited and there are no exceptions related to that result, you will begin to see the votes reflecting on the leader board [at the Results Operations Centre],” he said.
Mamabolo explained that results may take longer to filter through than in the past because ballots papers are now three instead of two.

Election Day: IEC stays the course to ensure right to vote
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has assured voters, who arrive at voting stations before 9pm tonight, that they will be allowed to vote, even if the process stretches beyond the closing time.
Voting stations opened at 7am today for South Africans to cast their votes in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, with special votes (for those who applied for various reasons) and voting abroad already having taken place.
“We are pleased that our efforts are yielding results, with the length of the queues substantially reduced,” said IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo on Wednesday.
Addressing media at the National Results Operations Centre (ROC) in Midrand this evening, Mamabolo said voting stations are experiencing a late surge and are processing a large number of voters in certain areas, particularly the metropolitan areas in Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape.
“The Commission is pleased that most glitches reported earlier have been overcome, allowing electoral officials to service voters timeously,” Mamabolo said.
Mamabolo said every citizen who has made an effort to be at a voting station must be allowed to vote.
There are 23 292 voting stations, with over 27.79 million registered voters.
“We urge those who have not voted to use the remaining time to go and make their mark. Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) will remain deployed at the voting stations to ensure the safety of voters.
“The Commission is pleased with the high turnout at many voting stations across the country and thanks voters who have exercised patience in the queues while waiting for their turn to vote,” Mamabolo said.
Mamabolo explained that once the counting processes have been completed, the Commission will start a process to remove all voting materials, including ballot boxes and used ballots, to storage facilities.
“This process will be handled with the utmost care,” Mamabolo said, urging members of the public to report any irregularities to the authorities.
Mamabolo said to improve the quality of vote counting and the completion of results slips, the Commission has instituted a new category of staff, who will support the presiding officer with the counting effort.
“The recruitment criteria for this staff was slightly different from the rest, as high levels of numeracy are mandatory. Three such staff were appointed for each voting station and each sub-station where we operate a voting centre,” Mamabolo said.
Mamabolo said according to the Electoral Act, the Commission has seven days within which to announce the results.
“We have always been able to declare and announce the results well within this period and will endeavour to do so with these elections,” he said.
With regard to voting at Correctional Service centres, Mamabolo said voting has been completed at all correctional facilities across the country.
“We remain grateful to the Department of Correctional Services for its ongoing assistance in ensuring that inmates exercise their democratic rights,” Mamabolo said. – SAnews.gov.za

DP Mashatile makes his mark
Deputy President Paul Mashatile has cast his vote at the St Johannes Church in Kelvin, Johannesburg.
After casting his vote, the Deputy President called on all South Africans to exercise their right to make a mark.
“All I want to do is call on all South Africans to go out and exercise their right to vote. It’s a right that we all fought hard for as South Africans. [With] 30 years of democracy, we still remain a very strong democratic country and our votes will ensure that we sustain that,” he said.
Mashatile commended South Africans for observing peaceful elections thus far.
“I’m quite happy that in most parts of the country, the elections are proceeding peacefully and…we do hope that at the end of the voting process, everything would have gone well and South Africans would have exercised their rights,” Mashatile said.
Citizens doing their part
This year’s elections have seen a high number of young people registering to have their voices heard.
Some 78% of all new voter registrations were by people aged between 16 and 29.
First time voter, 27-year-old Keke Rahlao said she wants to see an improvement in the lives of South Africans.
“I went to vote because I want to see a change in the country. I want the living conditions and employment conditions to be different for the upcoming generations. I also want living conditions to be better for our mothers and fathers.
“I went to vote because I want to see a change in governance,” she said.
Another first time vote, Thuto Bodumelo, 27, said voting was an observation of his civic duty.
“As a citizen, I feel like it’s important to vote. It’s a constitutional right and it is my constitutional duty to exercise it. I feel like as someone who is clamouring for change, my vote would go a long way to improving governance and service delivery. So I just want to make that little change,” he said.

Right to vote is a key component of democracy
As voting continues, Parliament has reminded eligible voters that the right to vote is an important political right enshrined in the Bill of Rights.
“It is a key component of our democratic society as it allows citizens to participate in the political process and have a say in who governs them,” acting Speaker of the National Assembly, Lechesa Tsenoli and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Chairperson, Amos Masondo said.
Voting in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections started at 7am and is expected to close at 9pm.
The Presiding Officers encouraged South Africans who are eligible to vote, to cast their votes in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, noting this year’s elections comes as South Africa celebrates 30 years of democracy and a democratic Parliament.
“Over the last 30 years, Parliament has repealed apartheid laws and passed progressive laws to improve the lives of all South Africans. We encourage all registered voters to exercise their right to vote, as it is crucial for shaping the future of our nation.
“By participating in the electoral process, you ensure that our democracy continues to evolve and address the needs and aspirations of all citizens. Your vote is your voice—use it to secure a brighter future for yourself and generations to come. Your vote is your only opportunity to choose who will represent you. Do not let others decide your future for you. Be part of the decision," the Presiding Officers said.
As the legislative authority of a democratic republic, the Presiding Officers said Parliament must ensure a government by the people, under the Constitution.
Tsenoli and Masondo added that preparations are well underway to seamlessly integrate newly elected members, ensuring a smooth transition to the seventh parliamentary term.
Meanwhile, government has commended the inspiring smooth start to Wednesday’s 2024 National and Provincial Elections.

Call to vote ahead of end of Election Day
The Electoral Commission in KwaZulu-Natal has encouraged registered voters who have yet to cast their votes, to do so ahead of the closing of voting stations at 9pm.
The call comes as voters in various parts of the country continue to cast their votes in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) has assured citizens that no eligible voter will be turned away and that every voter in a queue by 9pm will be assisted.
Giving a progress report on voting in the province on Wednesday, the provincial electoral commission said 96% of the 4 974 voting stations in the province opened at 7am, while some stations opened late due to some incidents in some parts of the province.
Among the reasons behind the late opening included the non-availability of police to escort staff carrying sensitive materials, service delivery protests, the blocking of voting stations by some political parties, and voter management devices (VDMs) with Apps that were not updated, amongst others.
The commission has reassured the voters that any technical glitch encountered on the VMD should not delay the voting process in voting stations.
“Voting is a manual process. If the hard copy of the voters and a list of preapproved Section 24A cases is at the voting station, voting can proceed unhindered,” the Commission said.
On the approved special votes, which took place on Monday and Tuesday in the province, the commission reported that of the approved special votes a total of 110 280 out of the 238 235 voting station visits were administered, including 101 161 out of 128 053 approved home visits were administered.
“We got reports of area managers being followed into our storage sites where we kept materials overnight, by people claiming to be representing political parties and demanding to camp within the precinct of our storage facilities. Such situations were also diffused by the SAPS [South African Police Service],” the commission said.
Voting stations will close at 9pm tonight while Home Affairs Offices are also open for the processing of Temporary Identity Certificates and issuing of Identity Documents ready for collection. – SAnews.gov.za

Government commends smooth start to elections
Government has commended the inspiring smooth start to the 2024 National and Provincial Elections.
This as thousands of South Africans have already cast their votes in the elections, affirming the strength and vibrancy of our democracy.
Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) Acting Director-General (DG), Nomonde Mnukwa noted a conspicuous and palpable sense of jubilation at voting stations across the country as citizens exercise their constitutional right in the seminal seventh national election.
“The dignity and patience with which voters are conducting themselves is a sign of our maturing democracy and we are confident that these elections will build on our history of free and fair elections” Mnukwa said.

As the country celebrates 30 Years of Freedom, Mnukwa reiterated government’s call on all 27.7 million registered voters to heed the clarion call to vote so that democracy can be strengthened.
“This right to vote was never given for free and should never be taken for granted. Many women and men died and suffered for this right and the best way we can honour them is to show up and vote,” Mnukwa said.
She said the impressive early indication of a significant youth cohort turnout and their enthusiasm demonstrated on social media platforms, is a clear demonstration of a nation invested in a future which is underpinned by a collective sense of the civic responsibility and active participation that comes with democracy.
“Your vote is your power and allows you to choose who will represent the interests of your community. We should never forget that elections are our collective voice, and your vote has immense power to inspire a path that will lead to the growth of our country. This Election Day let your voice be heard and let your ‘X’ speak for you,” the Acting DG said.
Mnukwa reminded registered voters that voting stations and Home Affairs offices will remain open until 9pm and encouraged voters who have applied for IDs, or want to apply for Temporary Identification Certificates, to visit their local Home Affairs office to collect their documents, in order to cast their vote.
Mnukwa also urged South Africans to keep making their way to voting stations throughout the day to avoid bottlenecks near closing time.
“Elderly, pregnant, and sick voters are encouraged to approach electoral officers at their voting stations so that they can be ushered to the front of the queue. To avoid medical emergencies, voters joining queues are advised to take precautions such as drinking water to remain hydrated and should take their prescription medicines.
“Voters are advised to take extra precautionary measures to protect themselves as the country is currently experiencing the annual influenza (flu) season. Preventative measures such as wearing of masks, hand washing with an alcohol-based sanitiser or practising social distancing are recommended,” Mnukwa said.
Respecting the right to vote
She further reminded employers, especially in the services and retail sector to allow their employees to exercise their democratic right to cast their votes today.
“Government is committed to ensuring a peaceful, free and fair election. Government, through the NATJOINTS [National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure], will act swiftly and decisively against those who would seek to disrupt elections.
“We call on everyone to respect the right to vote and warn those who aim to disrupt elections or intimidate voters, that they will face the full might of the law,” Mnukwa said.
Voters who are registered to vote can send an SMS with their ID number to 32810 or WhatsApp to 0600 88 0000 to determine if they are on the IEC voter’s roll and locate the name of the voting station where they will cast their ballots. – SAnews.gov.za

Smooth and steady start to 2024 elections
Voting in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections got off to a steady start with 93% of voting stations reported to have opened at 7am on Wednesday.
The Electoral Commission’s Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Masego Sheburi said all IEC trained staff members reported for duty and started welcoming the first of the 26 million eligible voters at 7am at the 23 292 voting stations across the country.
“In most stations, queues had formed even before the stations opened. This is testament to the enthusiasm of South Africans to record their political choices,” Sheburi said at a media briefing held at the National Results Operational Centre (ROC) in Midrand.
Sheburi also noted that there was a delay in the opening some voting stations. This was mostly in Johannesburg due to the late delivery of materials, delayed escorts by security services, or protests by certain community members.
Five voting stations in the Eastern Cape also did not open on time due to community protests.
However, at midday, election operations around the country reported good progress with minimal incidents reported.
The Commission assured voters that adequate supplies of all materials, including more than 90 million ballot papers, are available, and every voter will be assisted to vote.
The Commission also urged voters in the queues to be patient, as traditionally, voting queues peak early as voters often seek to vote first thing in the day.
“Where there were difficulties with our voter management device, instructions were issued for voting to proceed on the manual voters’ roll. We also remind voters of the cardinal rule in the NPE2024 [National and Provincial Elections 2024], to vote where you are registered.
“Also, once in the voting station and presented with ballot papers, remember to make one mark on one ballot.”
Sheburi also reported that voting kicked off in the morning at correctional facilities across the country to allow inmates to cast their votes.
Indelible ink
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has advised those who have voted not to go on extra effort to remove the indelible ink mark on their thumbs.
“The indelible ink is one of several security checks and safeguards built into the election process, but the Commission wishes to remind all voters that any attempt to undermine the integrity of the election process, including attempting to remove the ink mark, constitutes electoral fraud and is punishable by up to 10 years in jail,” the Commission said.
Make your voice heard
The Electoral Commission has thanked voters who have already responded to the call to vote, and appealed to all remaining voters to make their way to a voting station before they close at 9pm tonight.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is among those who have already cast their vote.
The President cast his vote in Chiawelo, Soweto.
“I went into the voting station, greeted various party agents, and proceeded to cast my vote. This is a great day for democracy in South Africa. This is the day when South Africa decides on the future of our country…who should lead the government of South Africa,” the President said on Wednesday.

South Africans unite to vote for the country's future
There was excitement in the air as Pretoria residents cast their votes at the Pheasant Hill Boutique Hotel at Doornkloof East, Pretoria, this morning.
Clad in a warm jersey and a coffee in one hand, Zelda Meyer from Irene, joined millions of voters who are making their mark today.
Meyer believes that voting is important regardless of who you are voting for. She told SAnews she was of the view that South Africa needs to grow the economy to create much-needed jobs, especially for the youth.
“Whichever party will be in power, they need to make a change and grow the economy.”
The 60-year-old said she would also like to see a better working public health sector as the cost of living is skyrocketing and salaries shrink.
The Irene resident encouraged those who are still undecided about going to the voting station to do so, for their country.
“If you recycle one beer can, even that makes a difference. You might think it’s just one beer can, but it adds to the manufacturing process...”
She expressed her gratitude to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) staffers and party agents for running the voting station well.
“It’s efficient, it’s quick. We had a small hiccup with the network but that was sorted out within 10 minutes.”
Another resident, Sam Masha, from Pretoria East, said he was looking forward to exercising his democratic right to vote for his party of choice.
“We’re so privileged that we’re able to vote because so much blood was spilled for us to be here today. I would never just sit at home, complain, and not come to vote. This is my right,” he added.
Despite the challenges in the country, Masha was optimistic about the future.
“I’m happy about some of the progress, especially when it comes to corruption. Even though the wheels of justice are turning slow, there is progress that I see.”
The 49-year-old said he would like to see a future with a functioning Eskom and for the load shedding to end indefinitely.
Eighteen-year-old Nsizwa Ngcobo from Soweto said he found it difficult to decide which party to vote for as a first-time voter.
His biggest dream for whichever leader wins the elections is that they will do the right thing and think about the youth’s future.
“Every party has its pros and cons and I really hope my vote will count,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

President casts his vote
With voting in the seventh democratic elections underway across the country, President Cyril Ramaphosa has cast his vote in Chiawelo, Soweto, the township where he grew up.
“I went into the voting station, greeted various party agents, and proceeded to cast my vote. This is a great day for democracy in South Africa. This is the day when South Africa decides on the future of our country…who should lead the government of South Africa,” the President said on Wednesday.
Voting in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections started at 7am and is expected to close at 9pm.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) assured citizens that no eligible voter will be turned away and that every voter in a queue by 9pm will be assisted.
“It is wonderful to meet so many people who are here to vote for the stabilisation and the extension of our democracy. I heard that voting is going well throughout the country. We are heartened that we have so many observers. I have been told there are 190 observers and I am sure the IEC will run a good election,” the President said.
He expressed concern about incidents of people interfering with the work of the IEC.
“We are concerned about the incidents that have been reported, incidents where the IEC has raised its concern. There was one incident where the police had to intervene by arresting those who were interfering in the work of the IEC.
“The work of the IEC is sacrosanct; it should never be interfered with because when you interfere with the work of the IEC, you are interfering with our democracy. You are trying to subvert the will of the people. The people of South Africa should never be obstructed and interfered with in anyway what so ever,” President Ramaphosa said.
The President appealed to South Africans to abide by the prescripts of the electoral law and the Constitution during the election period.
South Africa’s constitution grants all citizens aged 18 and older the right to vote.
“I have full confidence in our security officers throughout the country that they are going to execute their work and will make sure that those who seek to embark on ways that will disrupt our elections will be dealt with,” he said.
The IEC has reiterated that voters must vote where they are registered.
“The general rule in elections is that a person votes at a voting station where they have registered. The only exception to the general rule is that a voter may vote outside of their registered voting district only after notifying the CEO. Notifications in this regard closed on May 17. Approximately 360 000 voters have been approved to vote outside their voting districts,” the Commission said.
The commission also wishes to remind all eligible voters of the following:

Voters talk about changes they want to see in SA
While government has made significant strides in improving the lives of South Africans since 1994, voters have expressed some of the changes that they would like to see in the country after the 2024 General Elections.
This is as eligible voters across the country are today exercising their right to vote in the country’s seventh democratic elections, which comes 30 years after South Africa held its first democratic election.
“We need to improve the quality of education. The country needs change the curriculum to be more skills based in order for the youth to have access to job opportunities or even start businesses. Creating more employment opportunities is key,” Sbongakonke Shelembe said.
The 41-year-old, who is voting in Pietermaritzburg today, called on government to focus on uprooting corruption in the public service.
“Focus should also be on running efficient municipalities to attract investment. The government also needs to control the influx of undocumented foreign nationals. Various town are run down because there is no proper zoning of businesses,” he said.
Kopano Moumakae, 22, expressed concern about inflation and high food prices.
“If we can control inflation [things would be better for citizens]. Food prices is something that I am very stressed about. I want to see investment into public infrastructure. I would like to see us using what we already have to create more opportunities for people that do not have jobs. Job creation and public infrastructure is something that speaks to me,” Kopano Moumakae said at a voting station in Montana, Pretoria.
Reflecting on the importance of voting, Moumakae said due to the history of the country, it was important for him to exercise his democratic right to vote.
Shelembe noted the myriad of challenges facing the country as his reason for voting.
“Voting is important because it presents an opportunity for one's voice to be heard,” he said.
Phumla Mugeri, a voter in Pretoria, spoke about the progress government has made to improve lives of ordinary South Africans.
“I have seen so many changes since 1994. I come from a rural area; we did not have roads, water and toilets but when you visit the area now you see significant improvements. I believe that in the 30 years of democracy many changes have occurred,” Mugeri said.
Voting is taking place from 7am until 9pm. The Electoral Commission (IEC) has assured citizens that no eligible voter will be turned away and that every voter in a queue by 9pm will be assisted.
Overall, 70 political parties are contesting the elections, 11 independent candidates, and the national contestants are 52. In total, there are over 14 903 candidates vying for 887 seats in the National and Provincial Legislatures. –SAnews.gov.za

Law enforcement agencies reminded of responsibility to execute their mandate
With their sights set on safety and security and maintaining law and order during and after the election period, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in various provinces have been deployed at voting stations to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for eligible voters.
The Provincial Commissioners have on Tuesday sent off the last contingents of police officers who will further increase the foot soldiers who are already on the ground to create a safe and secure environment for the 2024 elections on Wednesday.
In the Eastern Cape, SAPS Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Zolani Xawuka, and his management addressed members during a parade which took place in the early hours of Tuesday, ahead of deployment for elections duties.
“All members are operationally ready to apply fundamental policing principles, guided by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa,” Xawuka said.
Xakuwa reminded the members on parade of their responsibility and obligation to execute their mandate professionally, impartially and with integrity and to “do so within the confines of the laws of the country”.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, gave his marching orders during a parade ahead of the deployment of the members to various parts of the province for the elections.
In the North West, police members have been deployed at the voting stations to ensure that elections are conducted peacefully and in a free and safe environment for voters, IEC officials, as well as role-players and the general public.
In the Free State, SAPS Mangaung District Teams are maintaining heightened police visibility at the Independent Electoral Commission's warehouse to ensure safety and security during the transporting and delivery of voting materials to different places in the Mangaung area.
Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, visited Bainsvlei Clinic to cast her special vote as well as interact with SAPS operational members who are posted at the voting station to ensure safety during the elections.
Briefing the media on the state of readiness on Monday, the SAPS Provincial Commissioner in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe and the Provincial Electoral Officer, Nkaro Mateta, reassured citizens that the Electoral Commission and law enforcement agencies in the province are ready to ensure free and peaceful elections.
The police members at the various parades were reminded of their responsibility and obligation to execute their mandate professionally, impartially and with integrity, and to do so within the confines of the laws of the country.
Giving the marching orders during the sending off parade in Harrismith of police officers who have been deployed to ensure safety and security at KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces on Tuesday, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola emphasised the maintenance of public order.
“There can never be disorder because you must be there to maintain public order and prevent crime... and do all other what is required by the Constitution. Go and assist your colleagues, make sure the election goes smooth and wherever you are, make sure you create a peaceful situation to ensure that people go to vote in a very peaceful and stable environment, and allow people to do what they are supposed to do,” Masemola told the police. – SAnews.gov.za
