Youth called to seize job opportunities through Presidential initiatives

Location: News

Youth called to seize job opportunities through Presidential initiatives

The Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Nonceba Mhlauli, has urged young people to take advantage of job opportunities available through government initiatives aimed at tackling youth unemployment.

Mhlauli made this call during a site visit to Afrika Tikkun Services in Salt River, Cape Town, on Tuesday.

Afrika Tikkun Services is an organisation that is part of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI), through the Jobs Boost Programme.

Jobs Boost is a R300 million pay-for-performance model being piloted in South Africa. It is an outcomes fund that works with implementing partners to secure sustainable, quality jobs for unemployed, excluded youth.

The programme is the largest youth employment outcomes fund in the world, and a major innovation in the South African government’s effort to confront the chronic youth unemployment problem. Jobs Boost was initiated by the Presidency, as part of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention.

Mhlauli’s visit at Afrika Tikkun Service, aimed to assess the progress and impact of the initiative on young participants. She expressed satisfaction with the program’s implementation, particularly its focus on ensuring young people's transition into sustainable employment.

“This morning, we are at Afrika Tikkun, which is one of the partners through the Jobs Boost Program, which is part of the Presidential Employment Youth Intervention. We came to assess the progress of this particular program, as well as the impact on young people,” she said.

The Deputy Minister highlighted that the facility offers a structured approach to preparing young people for the job market, including a recruitment phase, job readiness training, and eventual job placement.

The Deputy Minister was particularly pleased to learn that the first cohort of participants has already been successfully placed in jobs.

“The facility is really, quite inspiring. We interacted with young people who are part of various phases of the program, including from recruitment phase, where they are taken into the program and the various levels, including job readiness programs as well, where you get them ready for job placement. And one of the reports we also received is that the first cohort has already been placed,” Mhlauli said.

The Deputy Minister highlighted that the young people are not just being trained, they are being placed in sustainable jobs for a period of at least six months.

“When we speak as government about addressing youth unemployment, we are speaking not just about training young people, but also speaking about how we get those young people into sustainable jobs for a period of a minimum of six months.

“So far, we are quite happy with this cohort, and one of the things that we have discussed with the team is that they will come back and discuss with the management of the facility on areas that they believe can be improved, as we go forward and upscale into the next cohort, going forward into 2026,” the Deputy Minister said.

Mhlauli also commended the enthusiasm of the participants and noted the high number of young women benefiting from the program. She added that this is encouraging as it addresses the gender disparities in youth unemployment.

“There's much excitement, much enthusiasm from the young people, and we are very happy to see that most of them actually are young women. In particular, most of the classes are filled with young women, which shows that we are also not just looking at youth unemployment, but particularly the unemployment rate of young women, which are obviously most adversely affected by the crises of unemployment.

“All in all, we are quite happy about the progress we have seen, and obviously the impact that is quite visible in the lives of young people,” she said.

Encouraging broader participation, she urged young people to explore opportunities on the SAYouth.mobi platform, a zero-rated government website that provides information on employment, training, CV writing, and business planning.

“We call on young people to make use of these opportunities, and the quickest way to do that is to go onto the SAYouth.mobi website. It is a zero-rated website where you'll find all of the information about the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative, as well as other initiatives such as the YES Program.

“It is one of the platforms that government has created for young people to be able to access these opportunities. So, we really do encourage young people to go onto that website its zero-rated meaning that you don't need any data to get onto the website,” the Deputy Minister said.

The Chief Operating Officer at Afrika Tikkun, Marian Claite, also reflected on the significance of the visit, emphasising the collaborative efforts between Afrika Tikkun and the Presidency.

“Today we met with the Deputy Minister Mhlauli from the President's office, and it was to discuss one of our projects that we are working on called Job Boost. And it was a very constructive conversation that we had. We discussed from the enrolment of our candidates to the training of our candidates, and where we are because we are now at the placement phase.

“We discussed our challenges and the collaboration of the relationship, how it would look as this was a pilot, how it would look next year, and what complexion we would like it to take,” she said.

Claite added that they have given some suggestions on their side on what they would like to see included in the program, as well as what is working well for them.

“At the end of the day, I think it is our mandate, and it's all of our wish that all 1,375 candidates that Afrika Tikkun Services has been tasked with training will be placed in meaningful employment opportunities,” Claite said. – SAnews.gov.za

Parole for Alison Botha’s attackers cancelled

The Minister of Correctional Services, Dr Pieter Groenewald, has cancelled parole for Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger, the convicted attackers of Alison Botha.

Botha survived an attack in 1994 by du Toit and Kruger, after they raped her and subsequently stabbed her multiple times.

“This decision follows thorough evaluation and consultation of legal opinions. This decision was made in accordance with the Correctional Services Act, which empowers the Minister to cancel parole for individuals sentenced to life imprisonment.

“The Minister's primary consideration is the imperative of protecting and securing the community, particularly in instances where acts of violence against women and children have been committed,” the Ministry of Correctional Services said on Tuesday.

Both individuals have been reincarcerated and will remain in custody. - SAnews.gov.za

Fallen SANDF soldiers are South African and African heroes: President Ramaphosa

Fallen SANDF soldiers are South African and African heroes: President Ramaphosa

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers, who were killed in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), are African heroes who laid their lives in defence of those who are not able to defend themselves.

This is according to President Cyril Ramaphosa, who addressed the nation through his weekly newsletter on Monday.

The SANDF lost 14 members in the DRC after coming under deadly attack allegedly from M23 fighters.

South African soldiers are in the DRC as part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) and the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).

“They were killed in violation of a ceasefire agreement between the DRC and Rwanda, facilitated by President João Lourenço of Angola. As a nation, we pay tribute to our fallen soldiers. They are South African and African heroes.

“They lost their lives in defence of the defenceless: the men, women and children who are the victims of one of the world’s most protracted conflicts,” President Ramaphosa said.

The names of the soldiers – as released by the SANDF – are:

  • Staff Sergeant William Eddie Cola.
  • Staff Sergeant Molahlehi Ishmael Molahlehi.
  • Staff Sergeant Shwahlane Theophilus Seepe.
  • Corporal Matome Justice Malesa.
  • Corporal Rinae Nemavhulani.
  • Lance Bombardier Itumeleng Macdonald Moreo.
  • Lance Corporal Tseke Moffat Molapo.
  • Lance Corporal Metse Stansly Raswiswi.
  • Rifleman Sebatane Richard Chokoe.
  • Rifleman Derrick Maluleke.
  • Rifleman Tshidiso Andries Mabele.
  • Rifleman Calvin Louis Moagi.
  • Rifleman Mokete Joseph Mobe
  • Private Peter Jacobus Strydom.

President Ramaphosa has assured that SANDF participation in the DRC is “subject to the SAMIDRC mission” and will wind down “in accordance with the implementation of various confidence-building measures and when the ceasefire we have called for takes root”.

“As this happens, securing the safety of our troops remains paramount. The situation in the areas where our troops are stationed remains highly volatile. We are making every effort to ensure that our soldiers are well-equipped and sufficiently supported during the mission,” he said.

SAnews on Friday, 31 January 2025, reported on the Extraordinary SADC Summit, which was held in Harare, Zimbabwe, on the situation in the DRC. President Ramaphosa and other leaders at the summit, strongly condemned the ongoing violence in the DRC, where clashes have displaced thousands of civilians.

Silencing the guns

President Ramaphosa explained that South Africa has been a “troop contributing country to MONUSCO since 1999 and we have lent our support to the SADC mission deployed to the region in 2023” – anchored in the commitment to “silencing the guns” on African soil.

“Supporting peacebuilding and the resolution of conflict in Africa has been a cornerstone of our country’s foreign policy since the advent of democracy, as we have sought to draw on our experience of political dialogue and national reconciliation.

“Since 1994, our country has contributed to UN peace operations in Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Liberia, Nepal and to the UN-AU Mission in Darfur. South Africa has been part of fostering peace in Lesotho, Burundi and South Sudan. In 2022, we hosted negotiations that brokered a ceasefire between the government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.

“Last year marked the end of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM), which SANDF troops formed part of. The mission was deployed for three years to combat extremist groups in the Cabo Delgado province. The government of Mozambique has praised SAMIM for its efforts to restore stability to the region and for contributing to a vastly improved security situation,” he said.

In our best interests

According to the President, since the attack on the SANDF soldiers, questions were raised on South Africa’s DRC presence, with some saying “we have no business being there.”.

“Violence and conflict in Africa is the business of all Africans. The humanitarian, economic and social effects of these conflicts are felt across borders and regions. Instability in any part of the continent affects the prospects for growth and development across the continent,” President Ramaphosa insisted.

He said for peace to be secured in the eastern DRC, “there must be an immediate end to hostilities and a ceasefire that must be respected by all”.

“A ceasefire is a necessary precondition for peace talks that must include all parties to the conflict, whether they are State or non-state actors, Congolese or non-Congolese.

"Diplomacy is the most sustainable pathway to achieving a lasting peace for the DRC and its people. We call on all parties to fully embrace the current diplomatic efforts that are aimed at finding a peaceful resolution, including honouring the Luanda Process.

“Strong political will and leadership will be required from all parties to the conflict, as well as respect for the territorial integrity of the DRC,” the President said.

Furthermore, for lasting peace and security to be achieved in the DRC, “the collective will of the community of nations” will be needed.

“As a country, we have a duty of support towards the nations of Africa, whose solidarity and material support helped secure our liberation.

“South Africa will not let up in its support to the people of the DRC, so that they may have the peace and security they rightfully deserve,” President Ramaphosa concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

SA celebrates first Black South African woman crowned Mrs World

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has congratulated Tshego Gaelae for making history as the first Black woman to be crowned Mrs World.

The 33-year-old admitted attorney from Centurion, in Tshwane, was crowned the 40th Mrs World at the prestigious Mrs World 2025 pageant held last week in Las Vegas, USA.

“As South Africa celebrates 30 years of democracy, Gaelae’s victory is a powerful symbol of resilience, excellence, and global recognition of South African women. Her crowning moment at the 40th anniversary of the Mrs World competition is not just a personal achievement but a moment of national pride that resonates with millions of women across the country and the African continent,” Chikunga said in a statement on Sunday.

Chikunga has commended Gaelae for using her platform to inspire, uplift, and advocate for women’s empowerment globally.

“Tshego Gaelae has shattered barriers and redefined what it means to be a queen. Her journey speaks to the power of perseverance, grace, and purpose. She carries with her the dreams of many women who dare to break boundaries and claim their space on the global stage,” Chikunga said.

The Minister acknowledged the importance of representation and visibility for Black women in global leadership and beauty spaces, highlighting that “Gaelae’s win is a win for every young girl who dares to dream beyond societal limitations”.

“This moment is a powerful reminder that South African women are unstoppable. Tshego Gaelae’s journey is an inspiration, and we know she will continue to use her reign to drive meaningful change,” Chikunga said.

She noted that Gaelae’s triumph comes at a time when South Africa continues to champion gender equality and women’s leadership in all sectors.

She emphasised the department remains committed to ensuring that women and young girls, especially those from historically marginalised communities, have access to opportunities that allow them to rise, lead, and inspire.

“South Africa looks forward to welcoming Mrs World 2025, Tshego Gaelae, back home and celebrating her historic victory. The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, encourages all South Africans to join in celebrating this monumental achievement, and to continue supporting women who break barriers and pave the way for future generations,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za

Khayelitsha pastor faces rape charges

A 51-year-old pastor has been arrested for allegedly raping and assaulting a 15-year-old girl, and two women, aged 22 and 23 at his church in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

“It is alleged that people would go to the pastor for healing and he would tell them healing is possible, but then the victims must stay at the church, and that is where he would convince them to have sexual intercourse with him to receive their healing,” the South African Police Service (SAPS) said on Sunday.

According to the reports, the suspect assaulted and raped the victims at his church between November 2022 and January 2025.

“The community became aware of his behaviour and had a community meeting, and it was then when victims came forward and made the claims. The victims 15, 22 and 23 are safe and are receiving treatment and counselling.

“The 51-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared at the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ court where the case was remanded until 04 February 2025,” the SAPS said. -SAnews.gov.za

SAPS nabs over 200 000 in festive season operations

SAPS nabs over 200 000 in festive season operations

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has made 244 951 arrests during the festive season, as part of heightened crime-fighting operations aimed at safeguarding communities, holidaymakers, and tourists across the country.

The safer festive season operations commenced on 11 October 2024, and ended on Friday, 31 January 2025.

“From the period 01 October 2024 to 31 December 2024 – a total of 9 908 accused were found guilty and convicted for various crimes, including murder, rape, armed robberies, house breaking and car hijacking,” National Commissioner for the South African Police Service, General Fannie Masemola, said on Sunday.

Masemola held a media briefing to provide an update on the SAPS Nationwide Safer Festive Season Operations.

Masemola announced that a total of 2 198 illegal, and unlicensed firearms were seized and confiscated during operations. These include 1 731 handguns, 154 homemade guns, 211 rifles, and 102 shotguns.

Masemola said the majority of firearms seized were confiscated in Kwazulu-Natal, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.

“Firearms remain a big problem in South Africa as most serious and violent crimes including murders were committed with the use of a firearm,” the National Commissioner said.

In this regard, 37 658 rounds of ammunition were also seized and 1 767 explosives that are mainly used in illegal mining activities and cash in transit armed robberies were also seized.

In addition, the police recovered R4 million in cash and seized 16 293 stolen cell phones, which were either taken during crimes or used in their commission, for further investigation and analysis.

Furthermore, a total of 960 stolen and hijacked vehicles were recovered.

During this period, more than two million patrols were conducted, with more than 4 600 roadblocks, 620 000 stop and searches, and more than two million persons were searched in the country.

“Further to that, over 78 000 licensed liquor premises compliance inspections were executed together with more than 12 000 compliance inspections at firearm dealers and private security premises. A total of 6 547 unlicensed liquor premises were shut down throughout the country during this period.

“Through our safer festive season operational concept, which is inclusive of Operation Shanela, we intensified our prevention and combatting strategies on nine focus areas with serious and violent crimes at the centre of attention.

“From combatting and putting perpetrators of Gender-Based-Violence-and Femicide (GBVF), Aggravated robberies, murders, rape and car hijacking in prison– we have been hard at work in asserting and reaffirming the authority of the state,” Masemola said.

The National Commissioner said the intelligence operatives, detectives, including visible policing members and forensic experts worked tirelessly in tracking, tracing and taking down wanted criminals.

“Through intelligence and collaboration with various units within the SAPS, identified crime threats were addressed through conventional methods to identify, neutralise, dislodge, dismantle and takedown organised crime syndicates.

“Crime intelligence continuously monitored various organised crime threats which include theft of motor vehicles, kidnappings for extortion, cash in transit armed robberies, critical infrastructure, illegal mining and stock theft – to mention but a few of other key crime categories,” the National Commissioner said.

Gender-based Violence and Femicide

Between October 2024 and December 2024, a total of 685 Gender-Based Violence and Femicide perpetrators, were convicted to time in prison.

Of these, 110 GBVF perpetrators were sentenced to life in prison, 71 GBVF perpetrators were sentenced to 20 years and above in prison, 174 GBVF perpetrators were sentenced to 10 years and up to 19 years in prison, while 330 GBVF perpetrators were sentenced to a year and up to nine years in prison.

“Our men and women in blue remain relentless in tracking, tracing, apprehending and prosecuting GBVF perpetrators,” Masemola said. -SAnews.gov.za

In a bid to strengthen its crime-fighting capabilities, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has successfully trained and deployed over 20 000 new constables in various units across the country in the past three years, aiming to boost policing efforts and enhance public safety.

Providing an update on the SAPS Nationwide Safer Festive Season Operations during a media briefing in Pretoria, on Sunday, National Commissioner for the South African Police Service, General Sehlahle Fannie Masemola, said in mid-December last year, 2 699 newly trained constables joined the ranks.

Masemola, said the police officers joined the service during a significantly busy period for the SAPS, and contributed to the crime combatting operations that were aimed at ensuring the safety and security of communities, holidaymakers, and tourists alike.

“We were able to heighten police visibility and boost our crime combatting efforts at areas identified as hotspots across the country, including malls, beaches and along our country’s key strategic routes,” Masemola said.

During the festive season, the police arrested 244 951 people for various crimes, including among others, murder, rape, assault, illegal possession of firearms, drug dealing, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and entering the country illegally.

The SAPS safer festive season operations commenced on 11 October 2024 and ended on Friday, 31 January 2025.

“In keeping with our promise to increase personnel and ensure more boots on the ground to keep our communities safe, I’m pleased to announce that this week, we will be welcoming an additional 5 500 new police trainees into our academies.

“These recruits will undergo the Basic Police Learning Development Programme and those who are in possession of a matric certificate or a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 5 qualification will undergo the nine-month training programme and those that are in possession of a NQF 6 qualification or higher will undergo the six-month training programme,” the National Commissioner said.

Police killings

Masemola also noted that nine on-duty police officers and 12 off-duty police officers, were killed, as of October last year to date.

“The ongoing attacks and killing of our men and women in blue cannot continue. This is a crime that requires all of us to stand against and prevent it from happening. What is encouraging to note is that we have categorised the killing of police officers as a national priority offence which is investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as HAWKS.

“It is thus reassuring to note that during the festive period, thirty police killers were arrested with seven convicted to 22 life and additional 725 years imprisonment sentences,” Masemola said.

He said government continue to ensure members are always operationally ready by taking them through relevant training and acquiring the necessary resources needed for them to fight crime.

They are provided with the necessary protective gear to shield themselves from criminals.

“We would ultimately like to see a situation where we don’t lose any member in the hands of criminals. We therefore request South Africans to work with us and not against us in this fight to rid of our country off callous criminals,” the National Commissioner said. -SAnews.gov.za

SADC Extraordinary Summit condemns escalating violence in DRC, calls for urgent action

By Dikeledi Molobela

Harare, Zimbabwe - The Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders have strongly condemned the ongoing violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where recent clashes have left soldiers dead and displaced thousands of civilians.

The Heads of State and Government also reaffirmed their commitment to restoring peace and stability in the region.

The SADC leaders convened an Extraordinary Summit in Harare, Zimbabwe, on Friday which was chaired by the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Chairperson of SADC, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.

The summit brought together regional leaders, including President Cyril Ramaphosa and Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The summit acknowledged that despite previous peacekeeping efforts, the security situation remains dire. SADC troops deployed under the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) have come under repeated attacks, undermining the 2024 Luanda ceasefire agreement.

“The summit expressed concern that the recent attacks continued to worsen the security and humanitarian situation in the DRC and called for the immediate restoration of essential utilities such as water, electricity, means of communication and supply lines for food and other essential commodities.

“The summit condemned in the strongest terms the attacks on the SAMIDRC troops by the M23 operating in the Eastern DRC, as such actions violated the ceasefire that was brokered through the Luanda Process on 30 July 2024 and undermined peace and security of the DRC and the SADC region,” the leaders said in a joint communique issued at the conclusion of the summit.

The latest wave of violence has led to casualties among SADC peacekeepers, including 13 from the South African National Defence Force.

In a solemn moment, leaders paid tribute to the fallen soldiers from Malawi, South Africa and Tanzania, vowing to ensure their sacrifices would not be in vain.

With growing frustration over continued external involvement in the DRC conflict, SADC leaders signalled a shift towards stronger diplomatic and security measures. The summit also emphasised the need for urgent diplomatic engagement.

In a significant move, leaders called for an immediate joint summit between SADC and the East African Community (EAC) to develop a unified approach to ending the crisis.

The summit also mandated the SADC Organ Troika on Politics, Defence and Security to engage both State and non-State actors in renewed ceasefire negotiations.

The meeting reinforced SADC’s unwavering support for the DRC’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Leaders praised the resilience of SAMIDRC troops and welcomed Madagascar’s pledge to provide medical support to the wounded and displaced.

“The summit expressed solidarity with the DRC and extended its appreciation to the men and women deployed in the SAMIDRC for their dedication, resilience and service to the preservation of peace and security in the region.”

The summit also welcomed Mozambique’s new President, Daniel Francisco Chapo, to the regional fold, while commending Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her leadership in peace and security matters.

While diplomatic efforts will continue through the Luanda and Nairobi processes, SADC made it clear that regional security forces remain on high alert.

Ministers of defence and military chiefs from SADC countries will be dispatched to the DRC to assess the situation on the ground and ensure the safety of troops.

“The summit called for the immediate dispatch of ministers of defence, chiefs of defence and troop contributing countries to the DRC to ensure that the SAMIDRC troops are safe, and facilitate the immediate repatriation of the deceased troops and those who are injured,” the communique said. – SAnews.gov.za

Fellow South Africans,

Following the recent intensification of fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Africa has lost 13 brave soldiers who were dedicated to their mission and committed to peace. The fighting is the result of an escalation by the rebel group, M23 and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) militia engaging the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and attacking peacekeepers from the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC).

On behalf of the Government and the people of our country, I express our sincerest condolences to their families, their loved ones and colleagues. We bow our heads in honor of their heroic and gallant fight for peace.

We honour and mourn them.

All necessary support is being provided to the families of the deceased and the families of the injured. The process to repatriate the remains of the deceased is underway.

The attacks on peacekeepers resulted in the deaths of SAMIDRC members from other troop contributing countries, namely; Malawi and Tanzania, as well members of the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) brigade. We honour all the lives that were lost and pass our condolences to their families, governments and citizens. The situation in Goma and Sake, where our troops and their counterparts are stationed, remains very tense, volatile and unpredictable.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga and the Chief of the SANDF, Gen Rudzani Maphwanya and SAMIDRC Force Commander, Maj Gen Monwabisi Dyakopu are working to ensure that the SAMIDRC forces remain well equipped and sufficiently supported during this critical mission.

We are concerned about the speculation about the state of our troops and the battle conditions. All South Africans must rally behind our brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to bringing peace in our continent.

South Africa's military presence in the eastern DRC is not a declaration of war against any country or state. The members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) that are in the DRC are part of both SADC and United Nations (UN) efforts to bring peace and protect thousands of lives that are constantly threatened by the conflict in the DRC. The presence of the SAMIDRC forces demonstrates a commitment of SADC member states to supporting the DRC in its efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability and ultimately, create an enabling environment for sustainable development and prosperity.

We welcome the position that was recently adopted by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) during its special sitting on the situation in the DRC, which calls for an immediate end to hostilities, the reversal of territorial expansion by the M23, the exit of external forces from the DRC and the resumption of peace talks under the Nairobi Process.

The territorial integrity of the DRC must be respected in accordance with the United Nations Charter on the respect of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of other states.

We call on all parties to this conflict to fully embrace the current diplomatic efforts that are aimed at finding a peaceful resolution, including honoring the Luanda Process agreements. We must silence the guns on our continent for the attainment of inclusive development and prosperity.

I thank you.

Defeating Cervical Cancer: Improving Access to Testing to Save Lives

Location: News
FIND

Although cervical cancer is now a vaccine-preventable disease, 1 woman dies every 2 minutes globally of cervical cancer. Women in low- and middle-income countries are disproportionately affected.

In South Africa (SA), over 10,700 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year, with over 5,800 deaths. Cervical cancer is a preventable tragedy, and South Africa has the tools and knowledge to turn the tide.

We can eliminate cervical cancer by addressing the principal cause: the human papillomavirus or HPV. This is done by 1) vaccinating both boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 15; and 2) expanding access to HPV screening for all women. Screening for early diagnosis is critical because when diagnosed early, cervical cancer is considered treatable/curable.

SA is making significant strides in expanding access to both vaccination and screening, but significant barriers remain. Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, CEO of FIND (https://apo-opa.co/4jMkyJA), whose mission is #DiagnosisForAll says, “The fight to eliminate cervical cancer is far from over, but there is hope on the horizon. FIND is working with the public and private sectors in South Africa to find innovative and scalable solutions to test for HPV”.

Recent research by FIND and partners provides critical insights that could transform how we approach cervical cancer prevention and management. The project explored the acceptability and demand for HPV self-collection testing among South African women as a means of increasing access to HPV screening.

Key findings from the client surveys include

1. Low Awareness of Cervical Cancer and HPV:

  • 58% of women surveyed had little or no knowledge about cervical cancer or its link to HPV.
  • 46% cited nurses and doctors as their primary sources of information, showing the critical role healthcare providers play in education.

2. HPV DNA Testing: The Preferred Choice:

  • 77% of respondents chose HPV DNA testing as their preferred method, valuing its reliability and less invasive nature.
  • Among these, 71% preferred self-collection, citing privacy and convenience as the main reasons for their choice.

3. Pharmacy Accessibility:

  • 74% of women who preferred self-collection indicated they would purchase kits from pharmacies.

4. Affordability and Willingness to Pay:

  • Most respondents indicated that a price point between $18 and $36 would make the test more accessible.

5. Home vs Clinic Preferences:

  • 59% preferred collecting samples in clinics or hospitals, 28% preferred to self-collect at home, and 14% at a laboratory.

A Promising Solution: HPV Self-Collection Testing

One of the standout findings from the research is the high level of interest in HPV self-collection testing. This innovative approach empowers women to take control of their health by collecting samples in the privacy of their homes or at a convenient location. The research further revealed that many women are willing to pay up to $36 (approximately R680) for this service if made available at pharmacies.

Self-collection testing eliminates the need for invasive pelvic exams in clinical settings which many women find uncomfortable or stigmatising. It reduces the logistical challenges of accessing clinics, particularly for women in rural or underserved areas where healthcare facilities are not readily available. Making self-collection kits available in pharmacies could significantly increase screening rates and achieve early diagnosis.

The Knowledge Gap Among Healthcare Practitioners

While self-collection testing presents an exciting opportunity, its success depends on a well-informed and capable healthcare system. Unfortunately, the research revealed a concerning lack of understanding among healthcare practitioners regarding the national cervical cancer management protocols.

Without proper guidance, healthcare providers may fail to offer appropriate counselling, follow-up, or referrals for women with abnormal screening results.  Addressing this issue requires targeted training and capacity-building initiatives. FIND, in partnership with the National Department of Health (NDOH), trained over 700 health practitioners between September and October 2024,

The Public Awareness Deficit

Equally troubling is the lack of available information for the public about cervical cancer, its causes, and prevention methods. Many women remain unaware of the importance of regular screening.  Through its community arm, the African Cervical Health Alliance (ACHA), FIND, NDOH, and private sector partners engaged community health partners to develop, adapt and distribute over 10,000 copies of materials to communities about prevention and treatment of cervical cancer.

A Vision for the Future

To reduce the burden of cervical cancer in South Africa, we need a multi-pronged approach that combines education, innovation, and systemic reform. This includes:

  1. Policy Support: Advocating for policy changes to integrate self-collection testing into the national screening program and subsidize costs for low-income populations.
  2. Expanding Access to Self-Collection Testing: Making HPV self-collection kits widely available at affordable prices.
  3. Enhancing Practitioner Training: Ensuring healthcare providers are well-versed in national cervical cancer management protocols.
  4. Strengthening Public Awareness Campaigns: Launching nationwide initiatives to educate women and communities about cervical cancer prevention and the availability of new screening options.

When women have access to convenient, affordable options like HPV DNA self-testing, we're not just improving health outcomes – we're giving women control over their health decisions.” Says Dr Ntombi Sigwebela, Regional Director of FIND (https://apo-opa.co/4jMkyJA)

The South African G20 Presidency is prioritizing health equity, solidarity and universal health coverage. Addressing the diagnostics gap for women's health is crucial to achieving this agenda and building an equitable and inclusive global health architecture.

South Africans called to rally behind SANDF troops in the DRC

President Cyril Ramaphosa has addressed growing speculation about the conditions faced by South African troops deployed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), calling on the nation to stand behind its soldiers.

In a statement on Wednesday, the President emphasised government's concern over misleading reports and reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to peacekeeping efforts.

“We are concerned about the speculation about the state of our troops and the battle conditions. All South Africans must rally behind our brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to bringing peace in our continent.

“South Africa’s military presence in the eastern DRC is not a declaration of war against any country or state. The members of the South African National Defence Force that are in the DRC are part of both SADC and United Nations efforts to bring peace and protect thousands of lives that are constantly threatened by the conflict in the DRC,” the President said.

The President added that the presence of the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC)  demonstrates a commitment of SADC member states in supporting the DRC in its efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability, and ultimately, create an enabling environment for sustainable development and prosperity.

The President’s remarks follow the recent intensification of fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where South Africa lost 13 brave soldiers who were dedicated to their mission and committed to peace.

The fighting is the result of an escalation by the rebel group M23 and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) militia engaging the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and attacking peacekeepers from the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

President Ramaphosa welcomed the United Nations Security Council's recent position on the situation in the DRC, which calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the reversal of territorial expansion by the M23, the withdrawal of external forces from the DRC, and the resumption of peace talks under the Nairobi Process.

“The territorial integrity of the DRC must be respected in accordance with the United Nations Charter on the respect of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of other states,” he said.

He urged all parties involved in the conflict to fully embrace diplomatic efforts, including honoring the Luanda Process agreements.

“We call on all parties to this conflict to fully embrace the current diplomatic efforts that are aimed at finding a peaceful resolution, including honoring the Luanda Process agreements.

“We must silence the guns on our continent for the attainment of inclusive development and prosperity,” he said.

On Tuesday, the SANDF also issued a statement clarifying the misrepresentation of events circulating in a video clip claiming that SANDF forces surrendered to M23 rebels.

The SANDF clarified that the footage in question depicts a white flag raised, which is an outcome of discussions between the opposing fighting forces to agree on a truce to allow M23 to recover their dead and injured in the vicinity of the South African base.

It explained that this will also open the route for South African troops to access medical facilities. The SANDF said this is common practice in any war and members of the public should not be alarmed by the video clip and its meaning.

The SANDF also reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to its peacekeeping mission under the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), and SAMIDRC.

It further emphasised that its troops continue to operate with resolve, courage, and discipline to bring peace and stability to the region.

Remaining silent on GBVF ‘not an option’ – Justice Minister

Remaining silent on GBVF 'not an option' - Justice Minister

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has reiterated government’s commitment to fighting the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in South Africa.

The Minister delivered remarks at the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation’s Women Empowerment 365 Days Against Gender-Based Violence dialogue held in Soweto on Tuesday.

“As part of [the] criminal justice system, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is working tirelessly to ensure that legal and law enforcement services work on enforcing domestic violence laws and strengthening legal frameworks,” the Minister said.

The department, she said, is working closely with civil society to see the “realisation of the aspirations of the National Strategic Plan to End Gender-based Violence and Femicide”.

“In line with the GBVF Strategic Plan, the department therefore intends to increase the national footprint of sexual offences courts, particularly in rural communities.

“In line with the newly developed National Strategy on Support Services for Domestic Violence Survivors, the department intends to upgrade 100 district courts to offer services that are custom-made for survivors of domestic violence,” she said.

The National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide was adopted in 2020 as a society-wide programme to end GBVF. It is organised around six pillars, which are aimed at prevention of GBV, strengthening the criminal justice response to GBV, and providing support, care and healing to survivors of gender-based violence.

Femicide Watch and addressing backlogs

Kubayi said the department will publish the very first Femicide Watch in Africa repository.

“This is a national repository of GBV-related femicide cases designed to provide the numerical analysis, the profile and the severity of the pandemic of femicide in our country, so as to assist government and our partners in establishing informed programmatic interventions,” Kubayi added.

In the courts, the department has initiated a 100-day challenge to “reduce and ultimately eliminate backlog cases of domestic violence, sexual offences, maintenance and divorce matters”.

“In 100 Days, selected courts with high volume of backlog GBV cases will be challenged to come up with creative and sustainable innovations to reduce the turnaround times in the finalisation of these cases and also to address the existing case backlogs,” the Minister explained.

Whole of society approach

Kubayi highlighted that GBVF is deeply rooted in societal structures and patriarchal practices that perpetuate toxic masculinity and gender inequalities.

“As a woman or a girl child in this country, you can be directly affected by GBV and femicide regardless of your socio-economic class in society or the position you hold.

“Our social and family constructions are largely engrained in patriarchal practices, toxic masculinities, and gendered power inequalities, which often result in family dysfunctions, solo parenting, gender-based violence and killings,” she said.

Referencing a study by the Human Sciences Research Council, which found that at least three out of 10 women have experienced GBV, the Minister urged society not to become desensitised to these acts.

“This is not acceptable, and we should not accept [it] as a society. The stories of women getting killed by their partners have become so prevalent on social media platforms to the extent that when we read them, we no longer get shocked or outraged, we just read and move on.

“It is for this reason that I welcome this dialogue because it serves as a reminder to all of us that gender-based violence is unacceptable and that remaining silent is not an option.

“We all have a responsibility to speak out, to report it wherever it rears its ugly head in our homes, our neighboursand even in the homes of our beloved relatives,” Kubayi said.

The Minister called for a united front, urging all sectors of society to join the fight against GBVF.

“We believe that working together as a society, we can defeat the scourge of gender-based violence.

“We believe that we can a achieve a South Africa free from gender-based violence directed at women, children and LGBTQIA+ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, asexual] persons,” Kubayi said. – SAnews.gov.za
