G20 Finance Ministers set to meet in US

The Group of Twenty (G20) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors are set to convene a two-day meeting on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Spring Meetings, taking place in the United States, later this month.

The G20 is an international forum of both developing and developed countries, which seeks to find solutions to global economic and financial issues.

This meeting is part of the Finance Track under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, which will gather Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of G20 member countries, invited countries, and international organisations to discuss global economic challenges, financial stability, and policies aimed at fostering economic growth.

South Africa’s G20 Presidency commenced on 1 December 2024 and will run until 30 November 2025. It is taking place under the theme: “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.”

The Finance Track is co-chaired by Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, and South African Reserve Bank Governor, Lesetja Kganyago.

G20 members include the world’s major economies, representing 85% of global GDP, 75% of international trade, and two-thirds of the world’s population.

The G20 comprises 19 countries (including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and the United States), the European Union, and since 2023, the African Union.

The two-day meeting will take place from 23-24 April 2025, in Washington, D.C.

14% Increase in Spyware Attacks on Businesses in Africa

Location: News
Kaspersky

As part of the company's participation at the GITEX Africa conference, taking place in Morocco on 14-16 April 2025, Kaspersky (www.Kaspersky.co.za) will address the dynamics for cyberthreats in the African region as per the latest anonymised data from the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN)[1]. From 2023 to 2024 businesses in Africa were targeted by web threats, on-device threats, and attacks aiming to steal data, including spyware and password stealers. Phishing and ransomware continue to be significant threats in the region, with 66 million phishing link clicks seen by Kaspersky in the African region in 2024, including over 14.8 million phishing link clicks by corporate users.

Web-based threats, or online threats, are a category of cybersecurity risks that may cause an undesirable event or action affecting users browsing the Internet. According to Kaspersky data, there were 131 580 587 web threats detected in 2024 in the African region, including almost 20 million attack attempts in Kenya, almost 17 million in South Africa, and 12.6 million in Morocco. Businesses were targeted by web threats more often in 2024 than in 2023, with threat detections increasing by 1.2%.

Local (on device) threats include malware that is spread via removable USB drives, CDs and DVDs, or that initially makes way onto the computer in non-open form (for example, programs in complex installers, encrypted files, etc.). According to Kaspersky telemetry, local (on device) threat detections in organisations in the African region in 2024 increased by 4% compared to 2023. Among the countries that saw growth in local threats detected in organisations were Nigeria (169% increase), Ethiopia (86%), South Africa (32%), Senegal (11%), and Morocco (9%).

There has been a spike of threats related to data theft. According to Kaspersky data, there was a 14% growth in spyware attack detections on businesses in the African region from 2023 to 2024. Spyware is secretly installed on a user's computer to monitor their actions and collect their data. Apart from that, there has been a 26% increase in password stealer detections. Password stealers are a type of malware designed to harvest login credentials and other sensitive data.

“Our statistics show an increase in attack detections for several types of cyberthreats, and the factors driving these increases are multifaceted. In the B2B sector, the continuing shift toward hybrid work models and the rush to digitise operations — often outpacing cybersecurity investments — may leave businesses in Africa exposed to advanced persistent threats. In the B2C space, the explosion of digital financial services, coupled with low digital literacy rates, makes individuals prime targets for opportunistic attacks,” comments Maher Yamout, Lead Cybersecurity Researcher with Kaspersky Global Research and Analysis Team. “Organisations in Africa should prioritise a unified approach by enhancing collaboration, investing in specialised cybersecurity training, and promoting digital literacy to effectively combat the rising tide of cybercrime. Initiatives like the African Cyber Surge operation and targeted educational programs can serve as blueprints for building a resilient digital ecosystem across the continent.”

To stay protected, Kaspersky suggests following the recommendations below.

Individual users:

  • Do not download and install applications from untrusted sources.
  • Do not click on any links from unknown sources or suspicious online advertisements.
  • Always use two-factor authentication when available. Create strong and unique passwords, using a mix of lower-case and upper-case letters, numbers, and punctuation. Use a reliable password manager to help to remember them.
  • Always install updates when they become available; they contain fixes for critical security issues.
  • Ignore messages asking to disable security systems for office or cybersecurity software.
  • Use a robust security solution appropriate to your system type and devices, such as Kaspersky Premium (apo-opa.co/3G2yjUZ).

Organisations:

  • Always keep software updated on all the devices you use to prevent attackers from infiltrating your network by exploiting vulnerabilities.
  • Do not expose remote desktop services (such as RDP) to public networks unless absolutely necessary and always use strong passwords for them.
  • Use solutions such as Kaspersky NEXT EDR Expert (apo-opa.co/4ifQ8NV) for comprehensive visibility across all endpoints on a company's corporate network to get superior defense, automate routine EDR tasks, enable analysts to speedily hunt out, prioritise, investigate, and neutralise complex threats and APT-like attacks.
  • Use the latest Threat Intelligence (apo-opa.co/3XVFTa3) information to stay aware of actual TTPs used by threat actors.
  • Back up corporate data regularly. Backups should be isolated from the network. Make sure you can quickly access the backups in an emergency if needed.

The Kaspersky stand at GITEX Africa (https://GITEXAfrica.com) in Morocco will be located in Hall 13, 13C-20, while a keynote titled “When AI/ML fails in cybersecurity, humans are the last line of defense” will take place at the Dark Stage on April 15 at 2:10 PM.

Pigs in Pants: Researching Human Decomposition

Pigs in pants: Researching human decomposition | Carte Blanche | M-Net

The Western Cape saw the highest provincial increase in murders last year, and stabbing is a leading cause of death. But forensic science knows surprisingly little about the effect of sharp force trauma on how a body decomposes. For investigators, knowing the time and cause of death can be crucial to identifying a victim and solving a crime. Erin joined these researchers to find out how they are pushing the boundaries of forensic knowledge.

Disappearing sharks: A tale of two species

Location: News
Disappearing sharks: A tale of two species | Carte Blanche | M-Net

Since 1950, over 33 000 sharks, as well as turtles, rays and dolphins, have died in shark nets and drumlines on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. And these “shark control” measures are just one of the human threats to fragile marine ecosystems the length of our coastline. In the ocean’s vast ecosystem, the dynamics of predator and prey – humans and wildlife – are incredibly complex. But what is all too clear is that great white sharks are vanishing from South African waters.

In this story, we visit Ireland, a favoured destination for our departing doctors, and a country - despite being relatively wealthy - grappling with its own public health issues.

Basketball Africa League Announces Collaboration With Wave Senegal and Wave Cote D’Ivoire

Location: Sport
Basketball Africa League (BAL)

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) (https://BAL.NBA.com/) and Wave, Africa's fastest-growing mobile money platform, have joined forces to elevate the fan experience and make basketball more accessible in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire.  The collaboration will introduce a series of engaging initiatives designed to bring communities closer to the game in conjunction with the 2025 BAL season.

Leading up to the BAL's Sahara Conference group phase that will take place from Saturday, April 26 – Sunday, May 4, at the Dakar Arena in Senegal, the BAL and Wave will host a 5-on-5 streetball basketball tournament in Dakar for eight teams of male players.  The tournament will tip off on Saturday, March 22 and culminate with a championship game in early May.  The eight teams will be comprised of four teams selected by the Senegalese Basketball Federation and four open spots.  Registration for the open spots is open now here (https://apo-opa.co/4hrTNru), after which a selection committee will review the applications and determine the four participating teams.

In addition to promoting local competition, Wave is dedicated to enhancing the BAL experience by making it more accessible and rewarding for fans.  Wave users will have the opportunity to earn exclusive rewards, gifts, and other exciting perks through the Wave App rewards program, allowing more people to engage with the excitement of the BAL.  Wave users can take advantage of exclusive offers on tickets for the BAL games in Dakar, which are available for purchase now at BAL.NBA.com and Bal-teewtickets.com.

The marketing partnership extends beyond Senegal and will also bring impactful initiatives to Côte d'Ivoire.  In September 2025, Wave and the BAL will unveil a newly refurbished basketball court in Abidjan, offering young athletes a modern and inspiring space to develop their skills.  In addition to the unveiling, the BAL and Wave will organize a training camp at the court for local youth.  Additionally, one lucky Wave user from Côte d'Ivoire will win an all-expenses-paid trip to South Africa to attend the 2025 BAL Finals in Pretoria on June 14, where they will have the opportunity to experience the culmination of the BAL season.

“Our collaboration with Wave is part of our commitment to make the BAL and basketball more accessible across the continent,” said BAL President Amadou Gallo Fall.  “We look forward to working together to provide more opportunities for youth, players and fans in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire to engage with the game and our league.”

Echoing this sentiment, Wave Senegal General Director El Hadji Malick Guèye highlighted the synergy between basketball and financial inclusion, stating, “This marketing partnership with the BAL aligns perfectly with Wave's ambition to expand access to essential services, both in finance and culture.  As we revolutionized digital payments in the transport sector, we believe that supporting basketball can be a powerful driver of change.  By making the BAL more accessible and launching community-driven initiatives, we reinforce our commitment to a cashless, inclusive, and connected Africa.”

Katier Bamba, Wave Côte d'Ivoire General Director, emphasized the collaboration's local significance: “Basketball is a growing passion in Côte d'Ivoire, and we are thrilled to work with the BAL to provide opportunities that will leave a lasting impact on the community.  The court refurbishment in Abidjan will not only give young athletes a professional-grade space to develop their skills but also serve as a hub for local engagement and youth empowerment.  Our commitment to financial inclusion extends beyond digital payments; it's about creating experiences and opportunities that uplift entire communities.”

The Sahara Conference group phase will feature home team ASC Ville de Dakar (Senegal), defending BAL champion Petro de Luanda (Angola), first-time BAL participant Kriol Star (Cape Verde) and 2022 BAL champion US Monastir (Tunisia).

But with the development phase yet to get off the ground, community members and environmentalists are raising the alarm. They’re warning that the project threatens one of the most bio-diverse parts of our country, including thousands of hectares of indigenous trees. Not only that, but millions have already been spent with apparently little to show for it.

e-Hailing Hell

Location: News
e-Hailing hell | Carte Blanche | M-Net

In February this year, an unregistered driver on the e-hailing platform inDrive was arrested after allegedly causing an accident that claimed the lives of three people in the Western Cape. The passenger and two pedestrians were killed when the driver sped through a red light and rolled the car. The company inDrive confirmed the ride was ordered through its platform but said the driver’s details did not match the driver registered on the system. It was a startling revelation that spurred an investigation into the rental and sale of e-hailing accounts. Carte Blanche has uncovered a thriving illicit economy in which people without proper documentation can buy their way onto e-hailing platforms and accounts are openly sold or rented on social media. For ordinary South Africans who rely on e-hailing for transport, it’s a game of Russian roulette: your driver may not be who you think he is – and the consequences are potentially deadly.
