Tender Corruption Accused Lashed With Hefty Sentence

13 October 2024 by Guest

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit has secured a significant conviction against 38-year-old Makako Godfrey Mashiloane, after found guilty of tender corruption in Thabazimbi.

An employee of Anglo American mine reported that Mashiloane offered him R10 000 to secure tenders without adhering to proper bidding processes. Following this report, the Anti-Corruption Unit initiated an investigation. On the 06th July 2022, an operation was carried out and observed closely, resulting in Mashiloane handing over the cash to the mine employee, leading to his arrest and the seizure of the money. The case was later transferred to the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

On the 11th October 2024, Mashiloane was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment or a R20 000 fine, with half of the fine suspended for five years. The R10 000 seized during the operation was forfeited to the state.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the sentence, emphasizing that it serves as a strong deterrent to others involved in similar criminal activities.
