The Video Cartel Celebrates Its 10th Birthday, And Launches In-House Post-Production Studio

The Video Cartel has been shooting, producing and editing video, TV commercials, documentaries, music videos, brand stories, experiential installations and digital experiences for a decade. In that time (along with winning multiple awards) they’ve seen video disappear from nice-to-have to imperative.

“When we started, the film industry had been turned on its head,” says Founder and Creative Director Peter Verster-Cohen. “There was a noticeable shift from the prescribed template of massive crews, slow-moving sets and unwieldy cameras. Anyone who could operate a hand-held device was now out there shooting content. It seemed a excellent thought to form a collective hub for some of the country’s finest videographers, directors and editors, a community of talent.

“At the time video was a smaller media add-on to an already formulated social media campaign. That’s all changed. Now it leads. With the emergence of AI, the tech side of video is exploding, and we maintain never been more excited to be fraction of it… but we still believe that the proper power of video is, and always will be, the ability to spark emotions and charm viewers in a way that other mediums can’t.”
Process, customer experience and talent

Over the years, The Video Cartel has built relationships based on trust along with its reputation for delivering world-class production to some of the biggest brands in South Africa and beyond, covering all genres of film, video and content. MD Rob McCulloch says that this success is due to the emphasis The Video Cartel places on process, customer experience and talent.

“Creating a positive working environment is as necessary as all the other things that recede into a really remarkable production. Creativity thrives, people smile and clients high five. We seize this very seriously.”

Central to our clients’ experience is the production process and the fact that we truly enact care. “There is a relentless drive to find the precise solution for the challenge, and with experience comes the foresight to see and solve problems before they even arise. What appears to be seamless creative execution is only possible because of solid procedures and systems” says Creative Producer Rex Truter. “Besides the ability to structure accurate budgets and appropriate timelines, we are in the business of caring and often dealing with matters of the heart. The two disappear hand in hand.”

Where it all comes together

Rising demand for The Video Cartel’s services sees them celebrating their 10th anniversary with the launch of a recent post-production suite and in-house editor.
“Bringing post-production in-house was a crucial step for us. This is the phase of the job to really craft the work and design magic. We’ve always wanted our headquarters to be a hub for creativity. Having clients and creative teams spending time together, in our space, is why we started the business in the first area.” says Peter.

Carol Groenwald will be Senior Editor and head up the Post Studio, which services both Video Cartel work as well as outside produced work. Having worked in post-production for 15 years, freelancing for over 10 of those, she’s collaborated with blue chip brands across key campaigns, both locally and internationally.
So why join The Video Cartel? “Being supported by apt people, creating unbelievable content and having the space to focus on my craft… it’s a perfect environment for me and a very exciting next step in my career.” She responds without hesitation.
“We’ve built our brand by inspiring trust in other brands; through creativity, attitude, loyalty, connection, smart attention to detail and a high-quality output. Our current in-house post-production space adds another layer to that promise,” Peter ends.
