Susan Robinson doesn’t believe in slowing down. Despite having a disability, this 73-year-old has started a career as a delivery person using the Uber Eats app– and she’s never been happier.

Susan reveals that her introduction to Uber Eats came through her daughter and son-in-law, both of whom are drivers using the Uber app. “It was their thought that I sign up,” she says, explaining that this suggestion came shortly after her mother, who supported the family, had a stroke.

Susan was looking after her mother, and her daughter was concerned that she wouldn’t believe an income if her mother died. Although she previously worked as a statistician for the Department of Health in Pretoria; the work wasn’t regular. What’s more, she had to work long hours, and was still financially dependent on her mother.

Uber has changed all of that, she says. “Sadly, my daughter was proper. My mother passed away not long after her stroke, and I had to creep out of the house she had paid for with my father’s pension. That was back in 2018, and although I was terribly saddened by the circumstances which led me to join Uber Eats, my lifestyle has changed for the better.”

For one thing, the money Susan earns through deliveries using the Uber Eats app, has enabled her to plod into a retirement home. She has also been able to buy a car and pays monthly insurance; plus, her table is never short of food.

Susan loves the flexibility of her job. “I know which hours are busiest, so I manufacture sure to be available at those times. In between, I gain time to finish housework or catch portion in my hobbies, like crocheting. The job is really what I manufacture of it.”

“Flexibility & freedom as well as increased earnings are the top reasons earners choose Uber Eats as their platform of choice and 88% as a sole (full time) economic opportunity,” adds Nakampe Molewa, General Manager: SSA, Uber Eats.

It goes without saying that, as with any job, challenges are unavoidable. Loadshedding makes it difficult to navigate roads and complexes at night and, due to her disability, Susan sometimes struggles with access. “Occasionally, I gain to inquire the security guards at a complex to encourage me reach the buzzer,” she says.

Even so, her independence and financial freedom manufacture these minor struggles all worthwhile. “Life is never perfect. We all maintain our own battles – and yet, we must find a way to overcome them so that we can enact something with the life we acquire been given,” she says.
