Transnet sheds light on efforts to improve equipment failure: Component parts for 20 straddle carriers used at Durban Container Terminals (DCT) will be received by the end of November, Transnet has said in response to questions about nagging equipment inefficiencies at DCT Pier 2.
The questions were sent to the state-owned logistics utility to shed more light on the issue following Tuesday’s port update which said: “Despite our ongoing efforts, we are still experiencing low availability of straddle carriers, which is impacting our operations and your expectations.”
In addition to the parts it has ordered, Transnet said: “Four straddle carriers will be assembled and fully commissioned every month – with the first batch of four deployed in operations end of January 2025.”

Stolen R4m fireworks recovered at a Durban Hindu temple: Ahead of Diwali next week, the Hindu festival of lights, fireworks valued at R4m that were stolen from a business in Camperdown recently, were discovered at a Hindu temple in the Phoenix area of Durban on Tuesday.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Carmen Rhynes said three men between the ages of 34 and 42 were immediately placed under arrest for possession of stolen property.
Rhynes stated that the armed robbery occurred a few days ago at a business premises in Camperdown. The suspects entered the premises armed with firearms and tied up the security guards.

Manager jailed after medical supplies fraud ring bust – Juta MedicalBrief: A logistics manager at a company subcontracted to supply medical equipment to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban has been sentenced to eight years behind bars for fraud, corruption, and money laundering valued at more than R5.7m.
Rakesh Maharaj (44) pleaded guilty to the three charges and was sentenced by the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

Durban residents and visitors who are concerned about which beaches are safe for swimming will be pleased to hear that the eThekwini Municipality have released updated information regarding this.
According to the municipality, there are currently 20 Durban beaches that are open and regarded as safe for swimming, while three beaches have remained closed due to poor water quality.
These three beaches are Anstey’s Beach, Toti Main Beach, and Pipeline Beach.
“This status of beaches and pools will be updated as and when their status changes. You can still enjoy other recreational activities at closed beaches. You just can’t swim.” the municipality said.

Patient dies after setting herself on fire at Durban hospital: health department: Meanwhile, its emergency medical services (EMS) vehicles were involved in two crashes involving stray cows on Thursday, in which one patient died.
“In the first incident, a bus from our Nakekela hub from Manguzi overturned near Mbazwana in uMkhanyakude district while transporting 60 patients and two crew members. The bus had come across a stray cow which it hit before losing control.
“One patient trapped in the wrecked bus died while the rest of the passengers and two crew members sustained minor injuries and were transported to eMseleni Hospital.”
