The Tshwane Metro’s negligent approach to routine maintenance of water infrastructure has resulted in the loss of millions of litres of water and the flooding of the Belgian college iTversity in Heatherdale over the weekend.

A faulty valve at the Main Street reservoir caused the flooding of the college.

It is unacceptable that the Metro’s Department of Water failed to repair the water leak at the Main Street reservoir when it was first reported on 17 June.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) feels that the Tshwane Metro should take responsibility for the incident and for the affected disabled students after staff had to evacuate furniture from hostel and classroom areas due to mud and water flooding large parts of the campus.

More than 20 workers had to dig drainage trenches and use sandbags to divert the water.

A Freedom Front Plus councillor was at the college during the flooding incident to pressure the City Council to intervene and repair the faulty valve at once.

Unfortunately, there is more than one reservoir in the Metro experiencing issues. At the Montana reservoir, a leaking water pipe is causing water to flow into a stormwater drain.

The party sent an official letter to the Municipal Manager, Johann Mettler, demanding immediate inspections and repairs to reservoirs to prevent further potential flooding.

Taxpayers are being penalised for this water wastage seeing as a Level 1 water restriction is in place in Tshwane.
