Summer seating season is about to begin across Gauteng, and Unica Plastics is getting ready for it. The Pretoria West manufacturer, which has made injection moulded plastic products since 1998, is putting a selection of chairs and stools from its catalogue forward for patios, lawns, pool decks, café pavements and the outdoor spaces of restaurants, guesthouses and lodges. Each piece is made to handle sun, rain and heavy use through the year’s busiest months outdoors. The announcement comes from Pretoria in October 2026, with spring well established and the long South African summer only weeks away.

This is the time of year when families start carrying furniture back into the garden and hospitality operators gear up for sunny weekends, school holidays and year-end functions. Chairs that sat stacked in a storeroom all winter get counted and inspected, and many get replaced. Unica Plastics wants buyers to know that tough, practical outdoor seating is manufactured locally in Gauteng.

Built for sun, storms and heavy handling

In South Africa, furniture left outdoors faces harsh sunlight, sudden summer thunderstorms and a lot of moving around. Homes and businesses both benefit from a plastic chair that is light to carry, quick to wipe down and easy to stack away when a storm arrives. Unica designs its range around that kind of daily use, and a number of its products fit the coming season well.

The clearest example is the Lawn Chair, which Unica pitches for gardens, patios and poolside use. It has a generous seat and hand rests for comfort. Its perforated back rest, offered in two patterns, is practical as well as attractive, because the openings allow air to flow and help keep the person sitting in it cool on hot days. Drainage holes in the seat let rain water run off instead of pooling, a real advantage in a region where afternoon storms are part of summer. The chair has a 150 kg load bearing capacity and stacks up to 20 high. It comes in a senior size with a choice of two back rest patterns and in a junior size for children, in a range of colours, with special colours made on order.

Sturdier seating for hospitality

Restaurants, coffee shops and canteens that need tougher seating can turn to the Rocky Chair, which is built for heavier everyday use. Unica calls it a heavy duty chair that works in settings ranging from formal to a trendy cafeteria, with a soft, curved design that fits its surroundings. The ergonomic seat and back rest support the lumbar spine and give a pressure relieving surface to sit on, while a reinforcing rib structure gives it the strength for use on slick surfaces. It is rated for 200 kg, has a handle built into the back rest for easy carrying and stacks up to 20 high. It comes in black, maroon, dark green and dark blue as standard, with special colours made on order. Venue owners shopping for plastic chairs for sale before summer trading starts can find every specification on the product page.

For outdoor bars, braai areas and kitchens there is the Revo Stool. Unica built it to address a familiar weakness in plastic stools, which is legs snapping under twisting forces. Its top rotates independently, taking torsional strain off the legs, something Unica identifies as a frequent cause of breakage in many plastic stools. The stool is lightweight, has a reinforcing rib structure, stacks up to 20 high and supports 130 kg. It suits both domestic and commercial settings.

Seating for parties, weddings and catered events

Summer also brings outdoor celebrations, from family get-togethers and garden parties to end-of-year functions. For decades, the Unica Party Chair has been part of gatherings like these. It was among the first products Unica developed in 1998, back when, in the company’s words, many South African consumers would not consider furniture made from anything other than steel or wood. It went on to become a common sight throughout South Africa and the broader Southern African region. The Party Chair comes in senior and junior sizes, has a reinforcing rib structure and stacks up to 20 high for storage and transport.

The Best Chair is designed specifically for the events and catering industry. Its light weight makes storage and transport easy, and its contoured seat reduces pressure on the hips and upper legs when guests sit for long periods. Non-slip pads beneath the rear legs improve grip on slippery floors, and its compact footprint lets planners fit more seats into a venue. It supports 150 kg and is offered in three patterns.

For weddings and more formal outdoor occasions, Unica makes the Tiffany Chair locally, describing it as a local take on a design that has become popular worldwide and is used widely at weddings and events. A powder coated paint finish on its steel frame prevents rust, which helps when the chairs are set up outdoors. It stacks up to 10 high, supports 200 kg and comes in gold, silver, white, red and black. Event companies and venues sourcing Tiffany chairs for the upcoming function season can see the details online.

A Pretoria West manufacturer since 1998

Founded in 1998, Unica Plastic Moulders was the first manufacturing business in what grew into the Unica Group, and it is still the group’s central research and development base. Its factory on Edison Road in Pretoria West Industrial can manufacture 400 tons a month. According to Unica, strict quality assurance and quality control measures are applied at all times so that only top quality products reach retailers’ floors.

Beyond seating, the company makes stadium seating, plastic desks, the Desk in a Box all-purpose desk, fold-up tables, a 240 litre wheelie bin and homeware including laundry baskets, basins and buckets. Brands Unica has created and launched into local and cross border markets include the Party Chair, Desk in a Box and Genie, The Better Bed.

Recycling at the core

Sustainability through innovation is Unica’s stated mission, and the company says it continually looks for ways to improve its products and to become more sustainable financially, environmentally and socially. It reports using close to 4000 tons of recycled polymer every year. Unica says this saves 26 000 cubic yards of landfill space and conserves around 25 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually, enough to power 2000 average households for a year. For buyers seeking durable, locally made outdoor furniture, that commitment to recycling is one more reason to buy closer to home.

The case for local this summer

Buying furniture made in South Africa keeps manufacturing, skills and jobs in the country and shortens the trip from factory to buyer. A hospitality business replacing a few dozen chairs before December, or a family adding seats for a summer of swims and braais, may find planning easier with a nearby manufacturer that holds stock in standard colours and offers special colours on order. Every chair in this outdoor group stacks for storage, so seating can be cleared away fast when a storm moves in and set out again once the sun is back.
