University official must pay back R18m after taking student housing bribes

The Labour Court has found that Andries Helani, an axed senior director of student affairs at the University of Johannesburg accepted more than R3.2-million in payments linked to private student accommodation providers. Illustration: Bronwyn Webb

The Labour Court has found that axed senior director of student affairs at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Andries Helani accepted millions in payments linked to private student accommodation providers.
The case was brought under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act for “breach of contract” for failing to disclose his relationships with the providers.
Helani helped secure accreditation for two Braamfontein properties that were supposed to provide 1,441 beds but only had 299.
The court found that he received 366 payments totalling more than R3.2-million…
