US officials are warning that the activity of Mexican cartels could be growing across the Continent, including here in South Africa.
Investigative reporter and author of Clash of the Cartels Caryn Dolley says the concerns follow comments from US Africa Command head General Dagvin Anderson.
He recently told US lawmakers that cartel-linked drug production in Africa is becoming more sophisticated and could escalate into a wider security threat if not dealt with.
“He explained there is an emerging trend of these cartels in Africa partnering with terrorist organisations, for example, they will give money to a terrorist organisation to move drugs for them.”
