We Need a National Audit of All State Owned Residences

10 March 2026 by Guest

Statement by Bonginkosi Madikizela MP – DA Spokesperson on Public Works and Infrastructure:

I have written to Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, calling for a full-scale national audit of all state-owned residential property being unlawfully occupied by officials.

The DA believes that a full audit is now necessary, to get to the bottom of further state officials unlawfully residing in residential properties which belong to the state.

The DA requests Minister Macpherson to audit officials and officeholders at all three spheres of governments, the military, judiciary, politicians, families of officials, those working for entities, SOEs or parastatals, to determine if they are lawfully or unlawfully living in state properties.

The case of Judge Thulare of the Western Cape High Court, occupying a house illegally and being served a notice to vacate, then raising as a “defence” that other judges occupy state residences, is of great concern to the DA.

Yesterday my colleague Nicholas Gotsell MP called on Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi to come clean about all members of the Judiciary who may be living in state owned properties, but Minister Kubayi has not yet replied.

Now is the time for the full scale audit, so that we can eliminate those in public power taking advantage of state assets undeservedly.

The DA looks forward to action from Minister Macpherson, as he continues to crack down on abuses like this, and turns the states property portfolio into an income generator for the nation.

Fun South African Fact: South Africa’s natural and human fossil history dates back hundreds of thousands, even millions, of years. Early dinosaur fossils have been discovered in the Western Cape and up to 80% of mammalian fossils found so far have been discovered in the Karoo.
