Western Cape’s Response to Healthcare Funding Crisis

The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the swift and proactive response from the Western Cape Government to the sudden and devastating halt of USAID funding to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the province, particularly those working on HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) prevention and care.

We applaud the commitment to safeguarding healthcare services, especially for the most vulnerable residents.

This crisis has grave implications for the healthcare system, not just in the Western Cape but across the entire country.

It is important to note that the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness already funds all the antiretroviral therapy (ART) medicines needed for people living with HIV in the province. However, the USAID funding was directed to NGOs whose primary task is to ensure that people are consistently taking their ART medicines, providing critical support such as counselling, monitoring, and other adherence programs.

The halt in funding has left these vital services at risk, threatening to undermine the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS and TB in the province.

According to UNAids, in South Africa, approximately 222 000 people living with HIV, including 7 445 children under the age of 15, now face severe disruptions in their daily ART supplies and support services. This disruption threatens not only the health of individuals but also the progress made in combating HIV/AIDS in South Africa over the past decades.

We urge all provinces to support the Western Cape Government’s call for coordinated action. Immediate, coordinated action is required across South Africa to protect the lives of millions of people living with HIV and to ensure the continuity of critical healthcare services.

Now more than ever, it is vital that provincial governments act swiftly to mitigate the impact of these funding cuts and ensure that essential healthcare services remain uninterrupted.

The DA will seek to engage with the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) on any possible further shields for South Africans from the damaging consequences of these budget cuts. On this matter, the DA aligns with TAC and all those who have dedicated their lives to fighting HIV/AIDS and TB.

Together, we must work tirelessly to ensure that our most vulnerable populations receive the care and support they need during this critical time.
