A new WhatsApp-based loyalty programme is set to launch, offering small businesses and retailers an easy-to-use system to reward repeat customers without the need for a dedicated app, loyalty card or additional software.

Developed by ET Artificial Intelligence Systems, uses WhatsApp, the messaging app that South Africans already rely on daily, to track purchases, issue points, announce specials and deliver instant rewards, targeting coffee shops, hairdressers, service centers, independent retailers, and any business with frequent repeat trade.

Keith Levenstein, MD of ET Artificial Intelligence Systems, says many small operators have avoided formal loyalty schemes due to setup costs, complexity, ongoing admin and customer resistance to downloading yet another app.

“Traditional loyalty cards that get stamped are common, but these manual systems are limited. The ET Customer Loyalty Programme removes those barriers by operating entirely within WhatsApp, where usage costs are minimal and notifications are rarely disabled.”

Levenstein adds: “Small businesses know that loyal customers can drive revenue and referrals, but most lack the tools to build meaningful programmes. By using WhatsApp, which their customers are checking constantly, it is the ideal platform for a loyalty programme, making it simple, instant and mobile-first. Customers can easily view the loyalty points earned and retailers are able to send targeted offers in seconds.”

ET Customer Loyalty will reward customers for repeat visits and referrals or on spending with redemption handled via a quick message or code shown at the till. “Businesses can also broadcast time-sensitive promotions. For example, alerting loyal customers to limited-stock items at a discount, turning idle inventory into immediate sales. Because payments are increasingly done via mobile, the entire experience stays on one device.”

Levenstein says the programme is designed for ease of use. “There is no new app installation, no complex onboarding and minimal staff training. “It suits businesses that rely on convenience and personal relationships to compete with larger chain loyalty programmes with no initial outlay.”

ET Systems has begun rolling out the programme with the initial focus on Gauteng retailers. Interested businesses can contact ET Systems directly.

Even my novels offer passages in which the major character is imagined as a writer. In Joss and Gold, Li An is a business writer who edits her company\’s weekly Public Relations magazine. And in Sister Swing, Suyin writes human interest stories for a free, local community paper, The Asian Time. – Shirley Geok-lin Lim

“It’s PR that needs to be creative. It’s PR that needs to be new and different. It’s PR that needs to be original. The best way to establish a brand is to create a new category, and creating a new category requires creative thinking of the highest order.” – Al & Laura Ries
