Who Does John Back?

22 January 2026 by Guest

Hyundai Automotive South Africa has officially announced a strategic partnership with former Springboks Rugby World Cup-winning captain, John Smit.

The company made the announcement at their Hyundai Centurion dealership, attended by leading sporting, motoring and business media. The partnership marks a collaboration between two leadership-driven brands built on shared values of excellence and integrity.

Stanley Anderson, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa said the partnership reflects Hyundai’s commitment to working with individuals who embody the brand’s values.

“John Smit is not only one of South Africa’s most respected sporting figures, but also a proven leader whose journey from elite sport to business leadership resonates strongly with our brand. This is not a sponsorship. It is a strategic partnership built on shared principles, trust and a long-term vision.”

Smit, who captained the Springboks to Rugby World Cup victory in 2007 and is widely regarded as one of the country’s most influential rugby leaders, said the partnership with Hyundai Automotive South Africa is both natural and authentic.

“From our very first conversations, it was clear that Hyundai is a brand driven by quality, innovation and progress. The values that shaped my rugby career, which include discipline, teamwork, resilience and accountability, are the same values I see reflected in Hyundai Automotive South Africa’s approach to business. That is what makes this partnership so exciting.”

Since retiring from professional rugby, Smit has successfully transitioned into the business world, building a reputation as a strategic leader, entrepreneur and boardroom influencer. Smit will leverage his leadership experience and commercial insight to support Hyundai through participation in business engagements, dealer and stakeholder initiatives.

Smit will have usage of the all-new Hyundai SANTA FE in the execution of his duties. The Hyundai SANTA FE represents Hyundai’s focus on bold, innovation, premium comfort and reliability, qualities that mirror this new partnership.

When it was first mentioned in 1624, the cricket bat was not a bat but merely a stick, similar to the one used in hockey. In the 1770s after changes in the game’s laws, a swell was designed at the bottom. It was, however, very heavy. The oldest preserved cricket bat was made in 1729 and is kept in Oval’s Sandham Room in London.
