Why Multi-Generational Living Is Reshaping South Africa’s Estate Market

As families look for more security and support, multi-generational estates are emerging as an attractive option in South Africa with diverse housing options and shared facilities for all ages. On the KZN Mid-South Coast, the 1 300-hectare Renishaw Coastal Precinct is supporting this on-trend model with the launch of its residential offering, Restilridge Farm Estate.

“This growing interest in multi-generational living reflects a broader shift in what people expect from their homes and communities,” Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments, which includes the newly launched Restilridge Farm Estate.

“Families increasingly want grandparents to be close to their grandchildren, while older residents also want to remain connected to family rather than moving into communities that separate them from younger generations. The estate model is particularly well suited to this because it can provide different types of homes within one secure environment, alongside shared recreational facilities that encourage generations to interact naturally.”

The benefits of multi-generational estate living

1. Stronger family connections
Living within the same estate allows grandparents, parents and children to spend more regular time together without necessarily sharing the same home. Everyday interactions – from afternoon visits to shared meals, walks, and community activities – can strengthen family relationships.

2. A support network for parents
For parents balancing work and family responsibilities, having grandparents nearby can provide that additional support network. Whether it’s help with school runs, childcare, family meals, or simply having another trusted adult close by, proximity can make everyday family life easier.

3. More connection for older generations
For grandparents, living close to younger family members can provide a greater sense of purpose. Retirement can become an opportunity to remain actively involved in family life rather than a period of social isolation.

4. Shared amenities for every generation
The modern estate is increasingly designed around more than the individual home. Walking and cycling trails, clubhouses, sports facilities, playgrounds, community gardens, and social spaces can provide activities that appeal across generations.

5. Independent living with family nearby
Importantly, multi-generational living does not necessarily mean generations living under one roof. Different home types allow family members to retain their own space and independence while remaining close enough to share everyday life.

A multi-generational future on the KZN South Coast

In Scottburgh, the Renishaw Coastal Precinct is responding to this approach to residential living with Restilridge Farm Estate, a family-focused coastal farm estate designed to accommodate different generations. Restilridge complements the existing Renishaw Hills within the precinct – a mature lifestyle estate – that has become a popular retirement destination since it was established in 2016.

Residents enjoy secure estate living, community facilities, recreational amenities, and extensive natural spaces, with the wider precinct accommodating different stages of life. The planned development of a private school catering from primary through high school, together with a high-end shopping centre and additional commercial, healthcare and lifestyle amenities, will further strengthen the precinct’s multi-generational appeal.

“What’s exciting about the Renishaw Coastal Precinct is that we’re not looking at residential development in isolation,” says van der Merwe. “We’re creating an environment where different generations can live, work, learn, shop, socialise and enjoy the outdoors within the same broader community.”

Restilridge Farm Estate will comprise 67 freehold sites and 30 sectional-title homes, with three residential collections for different approaches to farm-style living. Beyond the homes, residents can access more than 40km of walking, running and mountain-biking trails, an extensive equestrian facility, The Anvil clubhouse, swimming pool, pickleball courts, an open-air yoga and Pilates studio, children’s play area, braai facilities, community markets, a restaurant, and venue facilities.

“We believe Restilridge offers something increasingly valuable – a place where families can grow together, where children have space to explore, parents have room to build a life, and older generations can remain an active part of the family story,” concludes Van der Merwe.
