The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) is justifiably concerned about the extremely vulnerable state of the Witbank and Doornpoort electricity network.

Even though it is a critical situation and the Municipal Manager of the Emalahleni Local Municipality, Sizwe Mayisela, has repeatedly been contacted for clarity and urgent action, no satisfactory feedback or plan of action has been received to date.

The electricity network is currently operating without a safety buffer due to the following factors:

Single supply: The Vulcan substation is currently the only source of power. Rand Carbide and Doornpoort are served by a single supply line, creating a dangerous single point of failure.

• No backup: Due to faulty lines between Rand Carbide and Churchill, as well as between KwaGuqa and Churchill, the ring supply has been interrupted. Churchill can, therefore, not serve as a backup should the main line fail.

These technical risks have already been brought to the attention of the Municipal Manager in great detail.

Serious concerns regarding the stability of the network and the repair of the Churchill lines have been raised, but did not elicit a constructive response.

It is unacceptable to expose the community to this serious risk while top management is not lifting a finger to intervene.

With the current weather conditions and thunderstorms, the risk of lightning damage to the Vulcan line is extremely high.

Should this single supply line fail, the entire area (Witbank and Doornpoort) will be without electricity, with no possibility of restoring supply via Churchill.

The network is extremely vulnerable at the moment. Repairing the Churchill lines is crucial and should be urgently addressed before the onset of stormy weather.

The lack of communication from the Municipal Manager only exacerbates the uncertainty and frustration of residents, who are constantly faced with unreliable power supply.
