15 Year-Old Rapist Sentenced to 17 Years Imprisonment

2 October 2024 by Guest

POTCHEFSTROOM – The Tlhabane Magistrates’ Court handed down 15 years’ imprisonment sentence to a 15-year-old teenager this week for four cases reported over the last three years.

Evidence led in court indicated that in the first incident, reported on Monday, 5 September 2022, a 12-year-old girl was walking home after school. She was approached by the convict, who was her classmate. He grabbed her water bottle and ran away. The victim chased after him into a secluded area, where she was overpowered and raped.

In the second incident, reported on Friday, 16 June 2023 (Youth Day), an 11-year-old girl was riding her bicycle in the street when the convict offered to repair the damages on it. After fixing the bicycle, he drove with it to test it into nearby bushes, and the girl followed him. He then attempted to rape the girl, but a man who was a passer-by made the boy stop and flee from the scene.

A third incident was reported on Tuesday, 3 October 2023, where an 11-year-old boy was driving home on his bicycle. The convict forcefully took his bicycle and drove off. The victim followed him and pleaded with him to give his bicycle back. Furthermore, he drove into nearby bushes, where he overpowered the boy and raped him.

The fourth and last incident was reported on Thursday, 1 February 2024. A 5-year-old girl was playing in the neighbour’s yard when the convict joined her and called her behind a shack, where he raped her.

In another unrelated incident reported on Sunday, 13 November 2022, a 23-year-old lady was at her friend’s house in Itsoseng. At about 01:00 in the morning, she wanted to return home and a 34-year-old man, Otsile Joel Boinamo, offered to accompany her home. On their way to her house, he threatened her with a knife and raped her. Boinamo was arrested one day after the incident, and he pleaded guilty during his trial. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on Wednesday, 25 September 2024, by the Itsoseng Regional Court.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, welcomed the sentences and applauded the Investigating Officers, Sgt Mamotse Moshe of the Provincial Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations Unit and Constable Tsekiso Tau of Lichtenburg Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit and the Prosecution for their teamwork and being equal to the task of ensuring that the accused were convicted.
