2 Children Rescued

2 young female children were rescued from the surf zone while swimming with friends at Diaz Beach 2, Mossel Bay.

Brian Cloete, NSRI Mossel Bay duty controller, said: At 13h57, Sunday, 15 June, NSRI Mossel Bay duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of a drowning in progress at Diaz Beach.

It was reported that 2 children appeared to struggling to swim and appeared to may be caught in rip currents at Diaz Beach 2.

NSRI Mossel Bay duty crew responded to our NSRI Mossel Bay station 15 rescue base while NSRI rescue swimmers, Mossel Bay Fire and Rescue Services, WC Government Health EMS and the SA Police Services responded. Our NSRI rescue craft JetRib was prepared to be launched and our NSRI rescue vehicle was dispatched.

On arrival on the scene a man, a Good Samaritan, was found rescuing one of the children, a local female, age 6, from the water. He was assisted to get the girl out of the water by Fire and Rescue Services officers.

The second local female child, believed to be age 9, a friend of the 6 year old, was also assisted from the water.

The 6 year old was treated by EMS paramedics for non-fatal drowning symptoms and she was transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition accompanied by her friend.

They were kept in hospital overnight for observation for non-fatal drowning symptoms and discharged in good health on Monday.

The Good Samaritan, Nicolas Vermeulen, from Vredefort, is commended for his efforts that contributed to saving the girls lives.

We are appealing to parents to ensure children have responsible adult supervision in and around water.
