4 young men were assisted after their boat suffered suspected fuel contamination that may have contributed to causing their boat to suffer complete motor and electrical power failure – Hermanus.
Jean le Roux, NSRI Hermanus duty coxswain, said: On Saturday, 14 June, at 14h37, NSRI Hermanus duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from 4 local males on a 17 foot ski-boat reporting motor mechanical and electrical failure approximately 500 meters offshore, between Sandbaai and Onrus.
Our NSRI duty crew responded to our NSRI Hermanus station 17 rescue base where the NSRI rescue craft The Legacy was launched.
Telkom Maritime Radio Services were alerted.
On arrival on the scene, in calm sea conditions, half a nautical mile offshore of Vermont we found all 4 young men safe but with no motor or electrical power to their craft.
An NSRI rescue swimmer was transferred onto the casualty vessel to assist with Marine VHF radio communications.
A towline was established and we towed the casualty craft to Hermanus Harbour where the casualty craft was recovered without incident.
The casualties expressed their deep appreciation for the assistance.
The operation was completed at 16h30.
