Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality health cover, is raising awareness about the dangers of sepsis and the importance of recognising early warning signs that could save lives.

Sepsis is a serious condition that occurs when the body’s response to an infection begins to damage its own tissues and organs. It can develop rapidly and become life-threatening without prompt treatment.

It can arise from almost any infection, including those affecting the lungs, urinary tract, skin, or abdomen. While anyone can be affected, the risk is higher for infants, older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems or chronic conditions.

“Sepsis is a medical emergency that can escalate quickly if left untreated,” says Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Health.

“Recognising the warning signs and seeking care early can significantly improve survival outcomes.”

Here are six warning signs of sepsis that should never be ignored.

  1. High Fever, Chills, or Unusually Low Temperature

A sudden shift in body temperature is often one of the first red flags. Many people develop a high fever with severe chills or shaking. In others, particularly older adults, the opposite can happen, with body temperature dropping below normal. Both can signal that the body is struggling to cope with a serious infection.

  1. Fast Heart Rate and Breathing

As the body fights infection, the heart and lungs may work harder. A racing pulse or quick, shallow breathing can be a warning sign that the body is under strain. Some people may also feel breathless, lightheaded, or unusually weak.

  1. Confusion or Changes in Awareness

Sepsis can affect brain function. A person may suddenly seem confused, disoriented, or excessively sleepy. They might struggle to focus, answer simple questions, or stay alert. These changes can be subtle at first, but should never be ignored.

  1. Severe Pain or Ongoing Discomfort

Unusual or intense pain is another common warning sign. Many people describe it as overwhelming or unlike anything they’ve felt before. The pain may not always match the original infection and can worsen quickly.

  1. Pale, Cold or Clammy Skin

Changes in skin appearance can point to poor circulation. The skin may feel cold or damp and look pale or blotchy. In more serious cases, lips or fingertips may take on a bluish tint, suggesting reduced oxygen levels in the blood.

  1. Passing Less Urine than Normal

A drop in urination can indicate that the kidneys are not getting enough blood flow. This is often a sign that the body is starting to struggle as the infection spreads and begins to affect organ function.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Sepsis can escalate rapidly, sometimes within hours, leading to septic shock, organ failure, and even death if not treated in time. Acting quickly gives the best chance of recovery.

Treatment usually involves antibiotics given through a drip, fluids to support blood pressure, oxygen, and close hospital monitoring. The earlier treatment starts, the better the outcome, as delays can significantly increase the risk of serious complications.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Although sepsis can affect anyone, some groups are more vulnerable than others. These include:

  • Infants and young children.
  • Older adults.
  • People with weakened immune systems.
  • Individuals with chronic illnesses such as diabetes or kidney disease.
  • Patients recovering from surgery or serious injuries.

Protecting Yourself and Your Family

Preventing infections is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of sepsis. Simple measures can make a significant difference.

Helpful prevention steps include:

  • Practising good hand hygiene.
  • Keeping wounds clean and covered.
  • Staying up to date with recommended vaccinations.
  • Seeking medical care for infections that worsen or do not improve.
  • Managing chronic health conditions properly.

When to Seek Immediate Help

If someone develops symptoms such as confusion, difficulty breathing, extreme pain, or a sudden change in temperature during an infection, it is important to seek emergency medical attention.

Prompt treatment can mean the difference between recovery and life-threatening complications.

Sepsis may start with symptoms that appear mild, but the condition can deteriorate rapidly. Trusting your instincts and acting quickly can save lives.

On the aspect of PR being more effective than a front page ad, the British business magnate and author, Richard Branson quotes, “Publicity is absolutely critical. A good PR story is infinitely more effective than a front-page ad.”
